Eagles awarded three international markets; First NFL team to enter Africa

Philadelphia Eagles awarded three international markets, and they’ll now be the first NFL team to have a presence in Africa

The Eagles are among the gold standards in the NFL and on Tuesday, they were rewarded for constant innovation and out-of-the-box thinking.

The NFL announced today that four new International Home Marketing Areas (IHMA) have been approved with the Philadelphia Eagles granted access to Australia, New Zealand, and Ghana – the first NFL club to enter a market in Africa.

The expanded program now includes 19 teams granted access to 30 International Home Marketing Areas across 10 different countries.

The organization is now allowed to market and hold engagement/commercialization efforts in those countries, with the hopes of organically growing fan bases in those areas.

In June, the NFL will host its first events in Africa with a developmental camp and fan event in Ghana. Full details to be announced at a later date.

The Eagles currently have two Australian-based players on the roster in Jordan Mailata and Matt Leo.

While Leo is still working to learn the NFL game, Mailata has developed into one of the top left tackles in the NFL.

The Philadelphia Eagles practice squad will compose of 17 players after the franchise signed Matt Leo.

A former Iowa State defensive end, Leo is on the practice squad as an international exemption and won’t technically count against the 16 player limit.

Philadelphia Eagles part ways with five more players as they work to get roster down to 53

Matt Leo among 5 Philadelphia Eagles players waived

The Philadelphia Eagles just announced five more roster moves as the team works to get the roster down to 53 players by Saturday.

Among the cuts was an international holdover, Matt Leo along with cornerback Trevor Williams, tight end Caleb Wilson, defensive tackle T.Y. McGill, and defensive back Michael Jacquet.

The roster currently stands at 63 players and the Eagles must get to the 53-player limit by Saturday at 4 PM.

Leo is an international practice squad exemption for the 2020 season and will not count against the 16-player limit.

Philadelphia Eagles 2020 UDFA class graded one of the NFL’s strongest

The Philadelphia Eagles found a few gems in the undrafted free agent process and Rotoworld’s Thor Nystrom believes Howie Roseman put together one of the NFL’s strongest classes.

Using a system that places a 1-10 point value on each team’s UDFA, Nystrom based 90-percent of each team’s ranking on the average of its top-five UDFA signings.

Thanks to some big names at running back and on the offensive line, the Eagles classes ranked fifth in the NFL.

The Eagles landed behind the Browns, Saints, Chiefs, and Cowboys.

The Eagles graded out well in my system by combining high-quality signings with a bunch of calculated dart-throws, including the signing of former Arizona dual-threat quarterback Khalil Tate to give a receiver transition a spin in camp.

The headliners are Cincy RB Michael Warren, Michigan State DL Raequan Williams, Montana LB Dante Olson and Baylor DB Grayland Arnold, all borderline draftable guys. Warren runs like a sock of rocks but has cement shoes… it’ll be interesting to see if he can carve out a Fat Robb career. I like Raequan’s shot of sticking around. He doesn’t rush the passer, but he’s long, he’s versatile, and he brings his lunch pail against the run. Feels like a long-term swing backup type.

The Eagles have had prior success with undrafted free agents and during the 2019 offseason, T.J. Edwards signed with the team and after a productive rookie season, he’s pegged to be a likely starter at middle linebacker this season.

Eagles acquire Iowa State DE Matt Leo as part of the International Player Pathway Program

Eagles acquire DE Matt Leo as part of the International Player Pathway Program

The NFL is always looking to acquire international talent in their league and the brass has figured out a way with the International Player Pathway Program.

The International Player Pathway (IPP) is a program run by the National Football League (NFL) to increase the number of non-American and non-Canadian players in the NFL. The program is an important part of the NFL’s overall strategy to grow internationally because it provides international athletes with the opportunity to play in the league which will increase the pool of talent.

The idea is a brainchild of former New York Giants pass rusher, Osi Umenyiora, and will benefit the Eagles after they acquired former Iowa State pass rusher, Matt Leo.

The Eagles are familiar with the program and used it to land Jordan Mailata a few years back.

Leo, an Adelaide, Australia native, transferred to Iowa State from Arizona Western Community College.

In 2029, Leo was a key reserve at defensive end for the Cyclones, playing in all 13 games … posting 14 tackles, 5.5 TFL, and one sack.
