Panthers waive/injure OL Matt Kaskey

OL Matt Kaskey was the sixth player to be taken off the Panthers’ roster on Tuesday.

If you thought the Carolina Panthers were done cleaning up the roster on Tuesday after maneuvering around the required five players, well, you were wrong. There was, unfortunately, a sixth—offensive lineman Matt Kaskey.

Carolina has announced they have waived/injured Kaskey, who sustained a foot injury in Sunday’s preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. He did not return to the game and, according to head coach Matt Rhule, was likely not ready to hit the field again for this week’s activities leading to Saturday’s matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

Kaskey spent much of 2020 on Carolina’s practice squad. He was called up to the active roster during the season’s final weeks and appeared in just one game.

He joins fellow offensive linemen Greg Little (traded) and Mike Panasiuk (waived/injured), linebacker Nate Hall (waived/injured), cornerback Troy Pride Jr. (injured reserve) and fullback Rod Smith (released) as the players removed from the team’s roster on Tuesday.

Panthers injury update: G Deonte Brown leaves game vs. Colts with ankle injury

Panthers sixth-round rookie G Deonte Brown is questionable to return to action today after sustaining an ankle injury.

While some rookies are showing out for the Carolina Panthers—with Terrace Marshall Jr., Chuba Hubbard and Tommy Tremble particularly of note—some probably aren’t having the debuts they had hoped for.

Sixth-round pick Deonte Brown left this afternoon’s game with an ankle injury. The guard’s status to return, at least by the time of the break, is questionable.

Fellow offensive lineman Matt Kaskey (foot) has also been hit with the questionable designation.

Aaron Monteiro and Mike Horton took over for the injured pair.

Panthers rule out rookie CB Troy Pride, elevate 2 from practice squad

The Carolina Panthers have announced a few moves ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Washington Football Team.

The Carolina Panthers have announced a few moves ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Washington Football Team.

CB Troy Pride Jr. ruled out

According to Will Bryan, rookie cornerback Troy Pride Jr. has been downgraded from doubtful to out for this week’s matchup due to the hip injury he suffered last Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers. He will not be traveling with the team. Pride has started in eight games this year and played in 14, totaling 42 tackles and two pass deflections. He has allowed a 118.3 passer rating in coverage, though. Look for seventh-round pick Stantley Thomas-Oliver to get more snaps as a result.

OT Matt Kasey elevated from practice squad

Also, Bryan says offensive tackle Matt Kaskey has been given the standard practice squad elevation for Sunday’s game. If he’s active, it will be the first time he’s played during his NFL career.

LB Clay Johnson also elevated

Finally, rookie linebacker Clay Johnson has also been elevated from the practice squad. He played for coach Matt Rhule at Baylor, posting 4.5 sacks and 26.5 tackles for a loss in his college career.

Panthers re-sign DE Efe Obada, place CB on injured reserve

Carolina Panthers re-sign DE Efe Obada, place CB Eli Apple on IR.

Efe Obada is back. Just a day after waiving the popular defensive end, the Carolina Panthers have re-signed him to the active 53-man roster. Obada rounds out a relatively strong but young edge rotation.

To make room for Obada, the team placed cornerback Eli Apple on the injured reserve list. Under the new rules, he will be allowed to return to the roster in three weeks. We had projected Apple would start at outside cornerback. With him sidelined, that job will go to either rookie Troy Pride Jr. or Rasul Douglas, who was just picked up off waivers.

The team also announced that they have added fifth-round pick Kenny Robinson and offensive tackle Matt Kaskey to the practice squad, who were both waived along with Obada on Sunday. They still have one spot on the practice squad left, which is expected to be filled by former Rams linebacker Clay Johnston.

Panthers injury updates: 2 more players come down with illness

A bug going around the Panthers locker room has forced Carolina to make a couple of more changes going into Sunday’s matchup with the Colts.

A bug going around the Panthers locker room has forced Carolina to make a couple of more changes going into Sunday’s matchup with the Colts.

According to team reporter Max Henson, defensive tackle Woodrow Hamilton has been ruled out due to an illness. Offensive lineman Matt Kaskey is getting promoted from the practice squad to take his place on the active roster. In a corresponding move, linebacker Ramik Wilson was waived.

Center Matt Paradis has also come down sick, but he has no official status as of yet. Paradis has disappointed this season, especially in pass protection. If he can’t go, expect Tyler Larsen to take his place in the lineup.

Defensive tackle Vernon Butler also has the bug. He is listed as questionable, as is wide receiver Curtis Samuel (knee). Both are expected to play, though.
