Four former Tigers win XFL Championship

Sal Canella, Javaris Davis, Mike Horton, and Davonte Lambert are all champions.

The Arlington Renegades won the XFL Championship 35-26 over the D.C. Defenders Saturday night and former Auburn Tigers [autotag]Sal Canella[/autotag], [autotag]Javaris Davis[/autotag], [autotag]Mike Horton[/autotag], and [autotag]Davonte Lambert[/autotag] helped them do so.

Canella, who played for Auburn from 2017-19, caught a 41-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and give the Renegades an early lead over the Defenders. The tight end finished the game with four catches for 71 yards and the score.

Despite being one of their top receivers throughout the season that was his first touchdown of the season.

Horton started at left guard for the Renegades and helped hold the Defenders to just one sack in the game.

Lambert and Davis did not record any stats in the game.

It wasn’t all positive news as former Auburn defensive tackle [autotag]Gabe Wright[/autotag] was on the Defenders. While his team lost the game he had a solid performance, making three tackles.

Panthers who could be cut during 80-man roster trim

Here are our most likely cut candidates as the Panthers inch closer to their final roster.

With two preseason games in the books, it’s just about time for the Carolina Panthers to trim their roster down to 80 players.

Before 4 p.m. ET on Aug. 23, every NFL team must cut five guys to meet the 80-player requirement—and the Panthers reportedly have gotten started by waiving linebacker Khalan Tolson early this morning.

So, here are our most likely cut candidates as the Panthers inch closer to their final roster.

Panthers officially place rookie CB Jaycee Horn on IR

The Panthers will now officially be without rookie CB Jaycee Horn for at least much of what remains in the 2021 season.

It was all over but the move itself for Jaycee Horn and the Carolina Panthers. And now, the move has come.

On early Monday evening, the team announced they have placed the rookie cornerback on the injured reserve. This affirms the statements made just hours prior by head coach Matt Rhule, who said he did expect Horn to miss an extended amount of time following surgery.

The 2021 eighth overall pick exited the Panthers’ 24-9 win in Week 3 after a backpedal floored him early in the second half. He was later diagnosed with multiple breaks in the metatarsal area of his right foot.

While the injury is not necessarily a season-ending one just yet, Rhule did state that the team will not rush Horn’s return and allow him the proper time and care to recover fully.

As a result, along with the trade for 2020’s ninth overall pick and second-year cornerback C.J. Henderson, the Panthers signed veteran Raashan Melvin to the active roster. Melvin, who had been elevated off the practice squad over the past two weeks, played a total of 62 defensive snaps between the victories over the New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans.

Offensive lineman Mike Horton, as also announced by the team, has been brought back to take Melvin’s spot on the practice squad.

Panthers add WR Alex Erickson, two others to practice squad

The Panthers rounded out their practice squad on Monday with WR/KR Alex Erickson and two familiar faces.

The Carolina Panthers rounded out their 16-man practice squad on Monday, according to multiple reports.

Wideout Alex Erickson, the most notable presence of the three newbies, may be in line to take over return duties as soon as Sunday. As first reported by Joseph Person of The Athletic, the sixth-year veteran was added following a visit with the team this past Friday.

Erickson specializes in, well, special teams—specifically in a spot where the Panthers particularly lack. The former Cincinnati Bengal has fielded 135 punts and 108 kickoffs in his career, with averages of 8.0 yards and 24.7 yards per attempt, respectively.

As also noted by Person, another special teamer in Dominik Eberle will join in on the squad as well. The second-year kicker was initially taken in by Carolina two weeks ago as competition for the now-departed Joey Slye. He and Syle would, obviously, lose out to current starter Ryan Santoso.

Guard Mike Horton, who was also brought back after being recently cut, makes for 16. The 2020 undrafted free agent played in two games for the Panthers last season.

Panthers injury update: G Deonte Brown leaves game vs. Colts with ankle injury

Panthers sixth-round rookie G Deonte Brown is questionable to return to action today after sustaining an ankle injury.

While some rookies are showing out for the Carolina Panthers—with Terrace Marshall Jr., Chuba Hubbard and Tommy Tremble particularly of note—some probably aren’t having the debuts they had hoped for.

Sixth-round pick Deonte Brown left this afternoon’s game with an ankle injury. The guard’s status to return, at least by the time of the break, is questionable.

Fellow offensive lineman Matt Kaskey (foot) has also been hit with the questionable designation.

Aaron Monteiro and Mike Horton took over for the injured pair.

Panthers activate 3 as COVID-19 replacements ahead of Falcons game

The Carolina Panthers have activated three players designated as COVID-19 replacements ahead of tonight’s matchup with the Atlanta Falcons:

The Carolina Panthers have activated three players designated as COVID-19 replacements ahead of tonight’s matchup with the Atlanta Falcons: guard Mike Horton, defensive back Natrell Jamerson and wide receiver Marken Michel.

Horton is an undrafted rookie who played his college ball with Derrick Brown at Auburn. He was promoted last week in a similar fashion but wound up as an inactive against the New Orleans Saints.

Jamerson is one of a handful of surprise holdovers from the Ron Rivera era. He played five games for Carolina last year, with the vast majority of his playing time coming on special teams.

Michel is one of several former Eagles players on the roster. He hasn’t seen any action in a live NFL game as of yet.

All three were among the practice squad players who the Panthers protected from being signed by other teams this week. We’ll find out if they’re in the lineup when inactives come out in about three hours.

Panthers activate 2 from practice squad with COVID-19 designations

The Panthers have made a few moves in preparation for tomorrow’s matchup with the Saints.

The Panthers have made a few moves in preparation for tomorrow’s matchup with the Saints. Former Jets kicker Taylor Bertolet has been added to the practice squad to provide some extra depth behind Joey Slye, who is expected to play after being activated from the team’s reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday. In a pair of corresponding moves, the team activated two other players from the practice squad to the roster as COVID-19 replacements.

Rookie guard Mike Horton and former Eagles wide receiver Marken Michel are the two names that got called up. Neither will count against the active roster though, so the team can still promote two others for tomorrow’s game if they choose.

It’s not hard to see why Horton and Michel were the picks. Carolina is extremely thin at both positions.

The interior of the offensive line is missing backup center/guard Tyler Larsen and guard Michael Schofield, who are on the COVID-19 list. Starting right guard John Miller is also questionable to play with an ankle injury. Miller did not practice on Thursday or Friday, so it’s likely he won’t be in the lineup.

The wide receiver room is also a bit thin right now. Keith Kirkwood is back on the injured reserve list after reinjuring the broken clavicle that kept him out the first five games of the year. No. 3 receiver Curtis Samuel is dinged up, as well. He did not play last week against the Bears and has been limited at practice. Samuel is also questionable.

We probably won’t see either Horton or Michel on the field unless somebody else goes down, but the way things are going that’s a distinct possibility.

Panthers position battles: Is there room for a rookie on the offensive line?

Here are the three remaining undrafted free agents who are competing for a spot the rest of the month.

After quite the eventful offseason, things finally seem to have settled down for Carolina’s revamped offense. Not only do the Panthers now have a new starting quarterback and another weapon at wide receiver, but there was also a major overhaul of the offensive line.

To recap, the unit has lost three starters from last year and the franchise brought in new offensive line coach Pat Meyer. They also traded for veteran left tackle Russell Okung, landed two notable free-agents in John Miller and Michael Schofield and signed four undrafted free agent linemen – now down to three after Fred Mauigoa was cut. After all those changes, Pro Football Focus ranked Carolina’s offensive line No. 17 in the league going into 2020.

Whatever happens during training camp, the five starters up front are all-but-decided. Is there any room for a rookie on this roster, though? Here are the three remaining undrafted free agents who are competing for a spot the rest of the month.

The Panthers signed a few undrafted offensive linemen as part of their 2020 class of 17 college free agents. One of the headliners of that group is Mike Horton from Auburn, who might have a chance to make the 53-man roster given the team’s lack of proven options at guard outside of projected starters Michael Schofield and John Miller.

Let’s take a look at some of his college tape. (Horton is the right guard, No. 64).
