Twitter reacts to Audric Estime’s fourth-quarter touchdown

The way this touchdown was set up was just as impressive.

Notre Dame was living dangerously against Syracuse, allowing its lead to be whittled down to a single touchdown. Many Irish fans hesitantly waited for the other shoe to drop and the game to be tied. Then, [autotag]Howard Cross[/autotag] and [autotag]Marist Liufau[/autotag] teamed up to do this:

With just a little over half the field to work with, [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] began the drive by calling [autotag]Chris Tyree[/autotag]’s number five straight times. Then, [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] completed an 11-yard pass to [autotag]Deion Colzie[/autotag]. A pass interference then put the Irish in the red zone, and [autotag]Audric Estime[/autotag] covered the rest of the field on the next play:

A 31-17 fourth-quarter lead put the Irish on the verge of upsetting the ranked Orange at home. The Estime touchdown was seen by many as the moment  the Irish might have put this game out of reach. Here’s how some happy folks reacted to this touchdown on Twitter:

Two Notre Dame players make first Comeback Player of the Year list

Nice honor for both players.

Not only has Notre Dame come back to win three in a row after an 0-2 start, but two of its players are being recognized for comebacks. The first watch list for the Comeback Player of the Year has been released, and two of the 61 players on the list play for the Irish. Specifically, right tackle [autotag]Blake Fisher[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Marist Liufau[/autotag] do.

Both players have yet to miss a game this season, and that’s a big deal for them. Fisher was injured early in last year’s season opener at Florida State and didn’t play against until the Fiesta Bowl. Liufau was expected to start in 2021, but he broke his ankle in practice before the season even began and didn’t play at all.

Although neither player deserved what happened to them, it appears those experiences only made them stronger, and they’re showing that on the field this season. Here’s hoping their efforts continue to pay off.

Notre Dame-Ohio State Preview: Irish injury update

Will Patterson be able to go?

Notre Dame started fall camp a bit behind the eight ball as injuries came on what felt like a daily basis. However, we are just four days until the season opener at Ohio State, and it appears the Fighting Irish will enter the game in relatively good shape health-wise.

Linebacker [autotag]Marist Liufau[/autotag] missed some reps in fall camp but when asked about injuries on Monday, [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] was quick to promise Liufau will be good to go.

“Marist is probable; Marist is ready to go,” Freeman said, “He’ll be ready. I don’t expect any limitations out of Marist Liufau.”

The path to being able to play Saturday night unfortunately was not as clear for veteran offensive lineman [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag]. Patterson, who moved from center to left guard this season, sprained his foot two weeks ago and was last seen in a hard cast on Friday.

“Jarrett, to me, is still questionable. I expect him to come out this week and practice. We’ll see as we get closer to game time where he’ll be, but I’d say he’s questionable right now.”

Know the Opponent: No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes

Both are big, but given Notre Dame’s plan likely includes pounding the ball and shortening the game, the absence of Patterson would be significant. Stay tuned as we’ll update you with any details that emerge.

Notre Dame releases depth chart ahead of Ohio State showdown

Anything surprise you?

Injuries have unfortunately been a significant story for Notre Dame this preseason as we’re now into game week for the Fighting Irish opener at No. 2 Ohio State this Saturday.  How many of those injuries are still a concern in terms of players being able to go on Saturday night?

If you’re to believe Notre Dame’s depth chart that was released on Monday morning then you’re to believe that the Irish received a bit of good fortune in terms of health as a few of their key offensive cogs appear they’ll be ready to go.

Check out the entire depth chart for Notre Dame ahead of Marcus Freeman’s first regular season contest as head coach below.

Watch: Drew Pyne throws second interception of first half

How are you feeling about this?

With an ankle injury forcing Tyler Buchner to the sidelines for the Blue Gold Game, all eyes turned to Drew Pyne. If he was going to have any chance of making Buchner feel his starting job was threatened, this was the time to for it to happen. Instead, Pyne has made it easier for Notre Dame fans to believe that Buchner isn’t moving from his top spot om the depth chart. In the first half, he threw two interceptions, the latter of which came on this play:

No disrespect to Marist Liufau for making a heck of a play. However, Irish fans would sleep easier knowing their team has a solid backup in case Buchner gets hurt when the actual games start. The Irish are on their way to another great season, but how great exactly could depend on how many blows they’re able to absorb to their best players. Pyne’s line of completing nine of 17 passes for 82 yards after that interception won’t exactly inspire confidence.

Four Notre Dame commits to play in Polynesian Bowl

Want to watch the future of the football program?

Want to catch a glimpse at some of the Notre Dame stars of tomorrow? Was the All-American Bowl not enough for you? You’re in luck if you’re able to stay up late. The Polynesian Bowl will be played at 11:30 p.m. EST Saturday on the CBS Sports Network, and four recruits who have committed to Notre Dame are on the roster.

The four players to look out for are as follows:

  • Receiver Tobias Merriweather of Camas, Washington
  • Tight end Holden Staes of Atlanta
  • Linebacker Niuafe Tuihalamaka of Mission Hills, California
  • Offensive tackle Aamil Wagner of Dayton, Ohio

Notre Dame commits who previously have played in this game include Chris Tyree, Marist Liufau, Jayson Ademilola, Braden Lenzy and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa. While making this game obviously is not a reflection of how they’ll play in college, it does make people excited about what the future of the program could be. If you’re curious about that or you simply want to watch more football, this is the game to tune into.

Injured Notre Dame linebacker Marist Liufau out for season

Tough loss for the Irish.

If Notre Dame is going to uphold its defensive reputation, it will have to do so without one of its returning linebackers. Last week, junior Marist Liufau was dealt a major injury in practice. It turned out to be a broken ankle, and he ended up needing surgery, which took place Monday morning. However, Brian Kelly said during a news conference later in the day that Liufau will miss the entire season.

Liufau was expected to start at Will linebacker this season. With that possibility out the window, the depth chart for the Irish’s season opener against Florida State lists junior JD Bertand as the new starter. Backing up Bertrand is senior Shayne Simon.

After seeing limited action as a freshman in 2019, Liufau played 10 games in 2020 while recording 22 tackles, six apiece coming in the ACC Championship Game and the Rose Bowl.

Bertrand played in seven games in 2020 and recorded seven tackles, while Simon had 14 tackles while starting eight of 11 games.

Breaking: Notre Dame loses significant defender for undisclosed time

No good news

Reports have surfaced this morning that the Irish have lost one of their linebackers in Marist Liufau. Apparently the presumed starter suffered a major injury to his lower body in practice yesterday and the reports aren’t very encouraging. The injury has yet to be confirmed but Liufau will be out for a good amount of time.

It’s a big loss for Marcus Freeman’s defense, as Liufau has just started to scratch the surface of how good he could be. It can’t be stressed enough that defenses depth at linebacker will now be tested.

It seems like either Shayne Simon or JD Bertrand will move into the starting spot, and there isn’t much time at all left in camp. Will someone else step up? Keep an eye out here on Fighting Irish Wire for more information about this developing story.

Notre Dame spring game: Five questions that could be answered

Who steps up this afternoon?

The final taste of football is upon us, this weekend is the culmination of Notre Dame’s spring practice ending with the Blue and Gold game.

Heading into the season, there will be plenty of question surrounding the program, the biggest is undoubtably the quarterback position. Find out five question that could be answered during Saturday’s controlled scrimmage.

Reload or rebuild for Notre Dame in 2021?

Will Notre Dame have a season where they struggle like in 2016 or will it be a prosperous season like this past season?

The list keeps growing with Notre Dame players making their intentions for next year known, many of them opting to move on instead of come back. Quarterback Ian Book, tackles Liam Eichenberg and Robert Hainsey, guards Tommy Kraemer and Aaron Banks, linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, tight end Tommy Tremble, defensive lineman Ade Ogundeji, cornerback Houston Griffith transferring are just a few of the players on the move.

Recently, ESPN took a look at which schools have recruited the best (insider) to have success in 2021 due to their recruiting. Although Brian Kelly’s efforts have been great, they didn’t make the main portion of the article, the Irish were mentioned in the second group of teams.

Being on the list alone is a good omen for Notre Dame, as the list of players moving on that were major contributors from this past season is significant. Luckily, Kelly has done a great job accumulating talent in South Bend, giving hope that 2021 won’t have a similar result as the 2016 season did.

Per the ESPN article, the Irish will have 38 players returning to the 2021 roster at the current moment that were ranked inside their top 300. So what does that mean for the ‘21 season?

There will be some bumps in the road with many of the younger players getting their first significant amount of playing time, but that doesn’t mean it will be all bad. This past year saw multiple freshman (cornerback Clarence Lewis, tight end Michael Mayer, running back Chris Tyree, defensive end Rylie Mills and linebacker Jordan Botelho) each show flashes of their futures. The first three really shined and you can add Jordan Johnson to the list as well.

Second-year players like safety Kyle Hamilton, interior lineman Zeke Correll, defensive lineman Isaiah Foskey, running back Kyren Williams, linebacker Marist Liufau, and punter Jay Bramblett were major contributors. This group will need to continue to grow.

As for the 2018 class which was ranked in as the 10th best class nationally, they have struggled to make a significant mark. Griffith transferring along with quarterback Phil Jurkovec already leaving and wide receiver Kevin Austin unable to stay healthy has hurt the classes outlook. Those three were the top ranked players in the class. There, however, have been contributors from that class, with include linebacker Jack Lamb, wide receiver Braden Lenzy and tight end George Takacs, linebacker Bo Bauer and center Jarrett Patterson. This class needs to step up in a big way for the Irish to be successful this coming season.

I haven’t even touched on the potential incoming-freshman contributors, which include tackle Blake Fisher, wide receiver Deion Colzie, guard Rocco Spindler, quarterback Tyler Buchner, linebacker Prince Kollie and other talented players.

The schedule isn’t quite daunting, the first three games should give Kelly plenty of time to get the pups feet wet before their big contest against Wisconsin in Chicago.

In my opinion the Irish are not rebuilding, but they aren’t quite reloading. Having a regular spring schedule will be extremely important for this team. The reps and practice time will further develop the players who don’t have as much experience. We should not see another year like 2016.
