Jaguars sign S Latavious Brini, waive rookie DL Jayson Ademilola

Former Arkansas and Georgia safety Latavious Brini earned a roster spot after a tryout at the Jaguars’ rookie minicamp.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced the additions of safety Latavious Brini and wide receiver Jacob Harris on Monday. To make room on the roster, the Jaguars cut ties with rookie defensive lineman Jayson Ademilola, who signed with the team shortly after the 2023 NFL draft.

Both Brini and Harris participated in the Jaguars’ rookie minicamp over the weekend on a tryout basis. News broke earlier in the day Monday that Harris, who previously spent two years with the Los Angeles Rams, was signing with the Jaguars.

Brini spent the 2022 season with Arkansas after transferring from Georgia. The 6’2, 215-pound defensive back recorded four tackles for loss, one interception, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble in his only season with the Razorbacks.

Ademilola, a former Notre Dame defensive tackle, was one of 10 undrafted players signed by the Jaguars earlier this month.

Following the moves, the Jaguars are at the 90-player roster limit and have a 91st player with Ayo Oyelola earning an exemption as part NFL’s International Pathway Program.

Jaguars announce 10 undrafted free agent additions

The Jaguars’ list of 10 undrafted signings includes three receivers, two players named Jackson, and two players from UCF.

Update: After announcing Eastern Kentucky linebacker Matthew Jackson as one of their signings, the Jaguars have since removed him from the list. He is reportedly set to join the Tennessee Titans instead.

The Jacksonville Jaguars added 13 players during the 2023 NFL draft and rounded out the roster with 10 more rookies signed in undrafted free agency.

The list, which was mostly reported immediately after the draft ended Saturday, includes three wide receivers, three linebackers, two players named Jackson, and two from UCF:

  • Jayson Ademilola, DT, Notre Dame — 6’3, 285
  • D.J. Coleman, OLB, Missouri — 6’5, 263
  • Elijah Cooks, WR, San Jose State — 6’4, 215
  • Kaleb Hayes, CB, BYU — 6’0, 195
  • Dequan Jackson, LB, Colorado State — 6’1, 225
  • Samuel Jackson, OL, UCF — 6’6, 325
  • Jaray Jenkins, WR, LSU — 6’2, 200
  • Oliver Martin, WR, Nebraska — 6’1, 200
  • Leonard Taylor, TE, Cincinnati — 6’5, 255
  • Divaad Wilson, CB, UCF — 6’0, 195

To make room for the 10 additions, the Jaguars released safety Tyree Gillespie and offensive lineman Jimmy Murray. Gillespie was on the field for 28 special teams snaps with the Jaguars during the 2022 season. Murray spent the year on the practice squad.

Notre Dame sees just 4 players invited to NFL combine

Surprised there weren’t more?

When the NFL scouting combine takes place in Indianapolis in February, Notre Dame will be represented.  It won’t be particularly loaded with Golden Domers but it will be represented.

Offensive lineman [autotag]Jarrett Patterson[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag], safety [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag], and edge rusher [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag] were all invited.  None of those players are particularly surprising to hear be invited but perhaps the ones that weren’t come as at least a little bit of surprise.

Both [autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Ademilola[/autotag] didn’t get an invitation after having solid careers on Notre Dame’s defensive line.  Offensive lineman Josh Lugg was also left of the list of invitees.  Perhaps none of the three on their own are that surprising to see get invited but if given those three names I would have guessed at least one would have gotten an invite based simply on what Notre Dame has put in the NFL from their positions in recent years.

Notre Dame defensive lineman Justin Ademilola declares for NFL draft

Good luck, Justin (and Jayson).

One of the unsung heroes of Notre Dame’s defense the past few years has been lineman [autotag]Justin Ademilola[/autotag]. More attention has gone to twin brother [autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag]. Still, he is just as fierce a defender, and he’s ready to test his abilities at the next level. Just as Jayson did Wednesday, Justin is declaring for the NFL draft, an announcement he made on social media:

In five seasons with the Irish, Justin recorded 108 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He also recovered three fumbles, forced another one and deflected one pass. He reached his career high of six tackles twice this past season, ironically in the Irish’s two home losses to Marshall and Stanford. His lone 1.5-sack game was in 2021 at Virginia.

Best of luck to both Justin and Jayson as they prepare themselves for the professional game. Irish fans should be grateful that they both stayed with the program for as long as they could. That’s something that never can be repaid.

Notre Dame defensive end declares for the NFL Draft

The Irish see another end off to the NFL

The time has come to an end for Irish defensive lineman [autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag]. The fifth-year senior has made up his mind about where he will play his football next year.

With the COVID-19 super senior extra year available to Ademilola, this afternoon he decided to not take advantage of the rule and has declared for the [autotag]NFL Draft[/autotag].

Ademilola finished his [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] career strong, totaling 6.5 sacks and 75 tackles over the last two years. Injuries have slowed down Jayson, and moving on to the NFL makes plenty of sense when you think about how short the life-span is. The six-foot-three-inch and 285-pound defender will need to test well and show NFL teams that he is healthy as he prepares for April.

The Irish defense will surely miss his energy next season and we all look forward to what Ademilola can accomplish at the next level. We wish him the best of luck.

Notre Dame loses key defender for Gator Bowl

Tough way to go for a graduate senior.

When Notre Dame puts a bow on the 2022 football season in Friday’s Gator Bowl they’ll do so without one of their mainstays on defense. Defensive lineman Jayson Ademilola will miss the contest due to an injury.

Marcus Freeman announced the news Thursday in his last media availability before the game. Freeman also added that safety Brandon Joseph is questionable with an ankle injury.

For Ademilola it makes the end of the road for his time in blue and gold. The graduate is out of eligibility after opting to return to school this past season. His absence Friday will be a small gateway to the holes that need filled on the defensive line by the start of 2023 for Notre Dame.

Despite the tough news, it seems Ademilola was still able to enjoy his time in Jacksonville.

The Athletic suggesting that Notre Dame is going after a MAC portal defensive end

A very interesting development

When Irish defensive end [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag] decided to forgo his senior season and also the [autotag]TaxSlayer Gator Bowl[/autotag], it came as no surprise. Brother’s Justin and[autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag] are seniors who could stay another year, the only returning significant contributor for sure returning is[autotag]Rylie Mills[/autotag].

There is a big hole that needs to be filled on the defensive line, even if the Ademilola brother’s return. With that in mind, The Athletic’s Max Olson went over what he’s hearing on transfer portal (subscription required) prospects and he mentioned Notre Dame going after Western Michigan’s [autotag]Braden Fiske[/autotag]. Olson has heard that [autotag]Florida State[/autotag], [autotag]USC[/autotag], and [autotag]Oklahoma[/autotag] are going after the defensive end, so the competition is fierce for the transfer.

Fiske has already visited Florida State and it is unsure of where his next visit could be. If [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] was able to get him to South Bend, it would surely be a very interesting development.

Watch: Chris Fowler calls first down that’s nowhere near marker

How could this call be so wrong?

Being ESPN’s top college football announcer, Chris Fowler is expected to prove that on every broadcast he does. Sure, he makes mistakes from time to time, just like every announcer does. It happens. But good grief, could he have been anymore incorrect on this call?

After Notre Dame’s Jayson Ademilola and Isaiah Foskey sacked USC’s Caleb Williams for a 10-yard loss, the Trojans were looking at third-and-20. On the next play, Williams escaped trouble a couple of times and made a 12-yard completion to Mario Williams. Do the math, and that’s fourth down. Somehow though, Fowler thought the play resulted in a conversion:

Look, we don’t expect our announcers to be absolutely perfect. But whatever caused Fowler to make this call is inexcusable. We get that it’s exciting to watch a Heisman Trophy candidate in Williams, but in the end, this still is only a football game, not a showcase. Fowler needs to check himself before his next broadcast so he doesn’t do this again.

Marcus Freeman updates Notre Dame injuries ahead of USC showdown

Relatively small list which is good news heading into a huge game

Notre Dame will be in fairly good shape healthwise when they enter the Los Angeles Coliseum in hopes of wrecking USC’s College Football Playoff dreams on Saturday night.  Marcus Freeman held his weekly press conference on Monday and gave the following updates in regard to player health.

“[autotag]Cam Hart[/autotag] will probably be questionable for this one. He had a shoulder injury that he had previously, but he had a shoulder injury. [autotag]Isaiah Foskey[/autotag] is probable. Mitch Evans I would say is probable with the ankle sprain. Probable for [autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag], probable for [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag], still questionable for [autotag]Tobias Merriweather[/autotag]. Still trying to see his recovery of the concussion.” -Marcus Freeman on Nov. 21, 2022

Obviously with USC’s talent at wide receiver the Hart status is a bit concerning.  Getting Joseph back, which it sounds like is going to happen, should go a long way as well after he’s missed the last two contests.

Notre Dame-Boston College: Irish injury update before kickoff

Hate to see players unable to play on their senior day

Notre Dame will take the field on their senior day a hair shorthanded.  We already knew that a good amount of players were going through various ailments as Marcus Freeman updated the masses earlier in the week.  We now have official word as three Notre Dame players won’t be able to play today.

Officially out for today are:

  • Wide receiver [autotag]Tobias Merriweather[/autotag]
  • Safety [autotag]Brandon Joseph[/autotag]
  • Defensive lineman [autotag]Jayson Ademilola[/autotag]

Merriweather and Joseph were expected but the Ademilola one is new as he wasn’t even mentioned by Freeman earlier in the week.  This official word comes straight from Notre Dame football’s public relations department.  Although I don’t think these will have much of an impact on what should be an easy Irish victory, it stinks to see Joseph and Ademilola not being able to play on their special days.
