Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned

Heading into the month of July, these are the Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned.

Training camp is right around the corner, and there are still impactful Minnesota Vikings free agents that have yet to be picked up by a team.

There have been some updates since we last checked in a month ago, most notably with wide receiver Chad Beebe finding a home with the Houston Texans, and Dede Westbrook receiving a contract offer to return to Minnesota.

Beebe fell through the cracks when he was still with the Vikings due to the rapidly growing talent at the receiver position. The arrival of players like K.J. Osborn and Ihmir Smith-Marsette pretty much ensured that he’d never see the field.

He’s hopeful that’ll change as a veteran for a Texans team seeking new direction.

Meanwhile, Westbrook still remains a free agent, despite receiving a contract offer from the Vikings after a spring workout. However, he turned down that offer, and the team signed Albert Wilson to a one-year deal instead.

Keep in mind, more opportunities will obviously open up when teams get into camp, and rosters are impacted by performance and injuries. Here’s the list of Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned in July.

List of remaining unsigned Vikings free agents

There are some surprising names on this list

With OTAs wrapping up and veteran mandatory minicamp right around the corner, there are still some noteworthy names on the list of Minnesota Vikings free agents that remain unsigned.

The biggest name on that list is obviously former four-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro outside linebacker Anthony Barr.

After spending eight seasons with the Vikings, Barr’s contract was allowed to expire in the offseason ahead of the regime shift in Minnesota.

Not only did the team replace him with Za’Darius Smith, but they also gave away the No. 55 jersey he wore during his time with the franchise.

It’s a bit shocking that he’s still one of the players on this list considering he’s more than capable of helping a team in need at the linebacker position. The same could be said about other names on this list as well, assuming they end up in the right situation.

Here are the Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned to this point.

Report: Vikings not re-signing CB Mackensie Alexander

Alexander won’t be returning to Minnesota

Cornerback Mackensie Alexander reportedly won’t be returning to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Pioneer Press’ Chris Tomasson reported on Thursday the team had informed Alexander they wouldn’t be re-signing him. However, several other teams have reportedly shown interest.

Alexander, a former second-round draft pick for the Vikings, started in five games in 2021 and finished the season with 51 tackles and five pass deflections.

5 biggest EPA, WPA plays of Cowboys Week 8 win required skill, perserverance, luck

The Cowboys won nail-biter against the Vikings in a game that defied the odds as they picked up victory No. 6. A look at the EPA gains and WPA shifts of the biggest plays in the comeback. | From @ProfessorO_NFL

The Dallas Cowboys travelled to the land of 10,000 lakes to face the Minnesota Vikings on Halloween.  With the contest competing head to head with Game 5 of the World Series, the NFL matchup drew a larger audience with 12.82 million viewers.  Prior to the start of the game, the then 5-1 Cowboys reported quarterback Dak Prescott would be inactive leading the way for backup QB Cooper Rush to get his first NFL start.

Rush was ready for his big moment and overcame an up and down first half to throw for over 300 yards and lead a scoring drive with less than a minute left in the game to hand the then 3-3 Vikings their fourth loss of the season.

In a game with a backup quarterback making his first NFL start, the Cowboys lost the turnover battle for the first time this season, were called for over 10 penalties and trailed the majority of the game. As the saying goes, “good football teams find ways to win” and the Cowboys did just that.

Here are the five biggest plays of the game using Expected Points Added (EPA) and Win Probability models from rbsdm.com. EPA is a formula that takes historical data and applies it to every play to determine if it increases or decreases a team’s expected points given the outcome of that play.  Every down and distance has a level of expected points; the likelihood a team will score on that particular drive based on that situation. Therefore EPA measures the shift in expected points as a result of a specific play.

Vikings PFF grades: Worst defensive scores from the loss to the Cowboys

Here are the lowest-graded members of the Vikings defense from the game against the Cowboys, per PFF.

Minnesota’s defense gave up too many big plays against a Dallas offense that was missing its most important player. The Vikings defense needs to recalibrate and prepare for the tough slate ahead.

Coincidentally, the three players Vikings Wire named to their unsung defensive players list were the lowest-graded by PFF this week. These three have stepped up for the team at times. The game against the Cowboys was not one of those times.

Three unsung heroes of the Vikings defense so far

Here are some unsung heroes of the Vikings defense:

Minnesota revamped its defense this offseason by landing some big-ticket free agents.

The Vikings signed players like DT Dalvin Tomlinson and CB Patrick Peterson. Those two grabbed the headlines in the offseason. Both have shown why at various points this season.

But what about the lesser-praised members of the Vikings defense? Here are some unsung heroes from that side of the ball:

Panthers vs. Vikings: 4 key matchups to watch in Week 6

There will be quite a few LSU Tigers in the building when the Panthers host the Vikings. That contingent includes CB Donte Jackson and WR Justin Jefferson, who should see plenty of one another in Week 6.

The Carolina Panthers may be facing a turning point already here in Week 6.

With so many less-than-optimal signs suddenly popping up—a regressed performance from their quarterback, a still-on-the-mend superstar, and an offensive line still searching for answers—a third straight loss on Sunday would send the once 3-0 hopefuls to .500.

For that not to happen, the Panthers must come out on the better side of these four key matchups with the Minnesota Vikings.
