Free-agent CB Bashaud Breeland wants another chance with Panthers

Bashaud Breeland, whose three-year deal with the Panthers was voided back in 2018, still wants the chance to play for his hometown team.

Can we call Bashuad Breeland a former Carolina Panther? Well, whatever your preference is, he’d like to be called a current Carolina Panther pretty soon.

The free-agent cornerback was recently interviewed on an episode of All Burgundy and Gold Errrything, a podcast devoted to the Washington Commanders. And Breeland—formerly of Washington, Green Bay, Kansas City, Minnesota and Arizona—told hosts Ray and Wole that he wants to add a familiar city to that list.

“The team that I feel like would fit me right now—in my career, what I got goin’ on as far as my personal thing—it would be the Panthers,” he said while motioning at the window displaying his hometown skyline. “I feel like that’ll fit me more. I lost a deal with them during a rocky time in my career, and it’s back home. So it’ll be a lot of hurdles that I’d jump just by playing for that one team.”

The Allendale, S.C. native, reached a three-year, $24 million deal with the Panthers way back in March of 2018. That pact, however, was quickly nullified—as Breeland failed his physical due to a foot infection.

Since then, the Clemson University product picked up four more NFL stops—including one in Kansas City that netted him a Super Bowl ring just a season later. The now 31-year-old Breeland, who was last a member of the Cardinals’ practice squad late in the 2021 campaign, did not play in 2022.

Cardinals protect 3 on practice squad for playoff game vs. Rams

They protected Bashaud Breeland, Kevin Peterson and Tavien Feaster on Tuesday.

The Arizona Cardinals will begin practicing on Thursday in preparation for their first-round playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams. On Tuesday, they took care of a procedural matter for the practice squad.

Teams are able to protect up to four players from being signed by another team. According to the league transaction report from Tuesday, the Cardinals, at least so far, have elected to protect only three.

They protected cornerbacks Bashaud Breeland and Kevin Peterson and also running back Tavien Feaster.

The three protections make sense. Peterson has been starting with cornerbacks Robert Alford and Marco Wilson injured. While Wilson is likely going to be able to play at least some, protecting both Peterson and Breeland, signed last week to the practice squad, makes sense.

The protection of Feaster suggests that the Cardinals are unsure of the status of running backs Chase Edmonds and James Conner. Edmonds missed the game with rib and toe injuries, while Conner injured his ribs in the second half of the team’s 38-30 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

It is possible we will see another protected decided on Wednesday, as they can do so because they don’t play until Monday night.

But as we get practice reports for injuries, we need to watch Wilson, Conner and Edmonds.

CB Bashaud Breeland is among 4 Cardinals’ protected practice squad players in Week 18

Preparing for their Week 18 game against the Seahawks, the Cardinals protected Bashaud Breeland, Kevin Peterson, Danny Isidora and Tahir Whitehead.

The Arizona Cardinals were expected to sign veteran cornerback Bashaud Breeland to their practice squad a week ago after rookie corner Marco Wilson suffered a shoulder injury. He contracted COVID-19 so that signing did not happen until Tuesday.

Now on the practice squad, the Cardinals included him among the four practice squad players they protected from being signed by any other team.

They once again included two cornerbacks. Here are their four protected players, according to the NFL transaction report on Tuesday.

  • CB Bashaud Breeland
  • G Danny Isidora
  • CB Kevin Peterson
  • LB Tahir Whitehead

Peterson has had to play on defense the last two weeks for the Cardinals. Whitehead is likely protected because Tanner Vallejo, who came back from injured reserve last week, was placed on the COVID list on Tuesday. Whitehead has been elevated to play special teams this season.

Isidora is protected, likely because the Cardinals don’t want to lose him. They don’t seem to have any injuries on the offensive line.

Breeland probably won’t get elevated this week to play but he could be for the playoffs.

A former Clemson standout has reportedly inked with a new NFL team.

The Arizona Cardinals added cornerback Bashaud Breeland to their practice squad on Monday, according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero.

“Breeland originally was supposed to sign a week ago, but tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival,” Pelissero reported. “Now cleared and Arizona gets some experienced depth.”

Breeland was waived by the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 18 following a reported altercation with Vikings staff and teammates. He later revealed his side of the story that led to him being cut.

It was Breeland’s first season with the Vikings after signing a one-year deal with the franchise this past offseason. He played in 13 games with the team this season, tallying 63 total tackles, five passes defended, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Before his stint in Minnesota, the 29-year-old Breeland played the past two seasons in Kansas City, helping the Chiefs to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Kansas City won Super Bowl LIV, during which Breeland recorded a key second-quarter interception.

Drafted out of Clemson by the Washington Football Team in the 2014 NFL Draft, Breeland spent the first four seasons of his career (2014-17) with Washington before playing with the Green Bay Packers in 2018.

Josina Anderson of CBS Sports and USA Today reported Monday that the Arizona Cardinals plan to sign cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who played for the Tigers from 2010-13 and was an All-ACC selection in 2013.

NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday that Breeland flew to Arizona to sign with the Cardinals on Monday, but tested positive for COVID-19 upon his arrival, though Pelissero noted it “sounds like they’ll still sign Breeland once he’s cleared.”

Breeland was waived by the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 18 following a reported altercation with Vikings staff and teammates. He later revealed his side of the story that led to him being cut.

CB Bashaud Breeland tested positive for COVID-19, will sign with Cardinals after he is cleared

The Cardinals were going to sign the veteran CB but now will wait until after he is cleared from COVID protocols.

The Arizona Cardinals brought in veteran cornerback Bashaud Breeland with the intent of signing him, as they have dealt with injuries at the position. Robert Alford is on injured reserve with a pectoral injury and Marco Wilson went down with a shoulder injury in the team’s 22-16 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

But Breeland did not sign.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, he tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival and entered protocols. Now he must wait until he is cleared and the plan is he will sign at that time.

Of course, that does mean he is losing practice time.

Breeland played 13 games for the Minnesota Vikings before being released. He had two interceptions, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles and 63 tackles on the season.

He will be an able addition to the Cardinals’ secondary once he is signed. He was the No. 1 cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs the last two seasons when they went to the Super Bowl both years.

Cardinals to sign veteran CB Bashaud Breeland

With Robert Alford on IR and Marco Wilson nursing a shoulder injury, the Cardinals need some help at cornerback.

The Arizona Cardinals have taken a hit at cornerback in recent weeks with injuries. Robert Alford was placed on injured reserve with a pectoral injury. Rookie Marco Wilson suffered a shoulder injury on Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts and is day-to-day for now.

To address their depth at the position, according to Josina Anderson, they are signing veteran cornerback Bashaud Breeland.

Breeland was released by the Minnesota Vikings earlier in the month after playing and starting 13 games this season. In those 13 games, he had 63 tackles, two interceptions, five pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

He spent the two previous years as the No. 1 cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs and as been in the league since 2014. He played four season with the Washington Football Team and one with the Green Bay Packers before the Chiefs.

The team did not announce the move Monday and it could be a practice squad signing initially. The NFL transaction report showed that Breeland visited the team Monday.

His addition would suggest the possibility of Wilson missing a game or more.

This past weekend, a former Clemson defensive back was waived by an NFL team following a reported verbal altercation at practice.

On Saturday, the Minnesota Vikings waived cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who played for the Tigers from 2010-13 and was an All-ACC selection in 2013.

NFL Network reported that Breeland had a verbal altercation with coaches and teammates at practice on Saturday, and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Vikings viewed the situation as “too much to come back from.”

Breeland gave his side of the story to Josina Anderson of USA Today Sports+ during an exclusive interview Saturday, saying the events that resulted in him getting waived were “blown out of proportion.”

Per Breeland, the incidents began with a verbal exchange with an unnamed coach during a meeting prior to practice.

“I feel like what happened in the meeting room with the coach was not serious enough to be an issue on the practice field,” Breeland told USA Today Sports+.

While Pelissero reported that Breeland “took off his cleats and got into it with multiple teammates who were trying to calm the situation,” Breeland gave a different version of the events that transpired, telling Anderson he took the field and intended to practice before being pulled off the field.

Breeland said he then sat down for a while, removed his cleats and put his workout shoes on while staying attentive to practice and listening to the coach’s corrections.

According to Breeland, via Anderson’s story, this is what went down after that:

Later, while switching fields, he said a player came up to him and said, “What’s up Breezy?” Breeland said he nodded his head in response and the player asked, “That’s all I get?”

“I was like, ‘Bro’ I’m not trying to be a distraction. Just let me get on the move. I’m good,'” Breeland said. “Then, it escalated out of nowhere.”

The player charged, “like he wanted to fight,” Breeland said. Others intervened. Breeland declined to share the names of those involved.

“The whole time I had my hands in my hoodie,” he said. “You can see my demeanor was like, ‘I’m not on that, but if you want to be on that we can be on that.’

“That’s when the general manager stepped in on the field. I feel like (Vikings head coach Mike) Zimmer came over there, saw confusion and just kicked me out. I feel like Zimmer was already feeling some kind of way because I wasn’t practicing. I said, ‘If I’m not being cut or released I shouldn’t have to leave practice.’”

Breeland said he spoke after the practice with Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, a “player personnel staff member” and two of the players involved to talk about what happened, and then Spielman later called Breeland to tell him he would not travel for Monday’s game against the Chicago Bears. Breeland’s agent later told him he was being cut.

This was Breeland’s first season with the Vikings after signing a one-year deal with the franchise this past offseason. He has played in 13 games with the team this season, tallying 63 total tackles, five passes defended, two interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Former Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland waived by Vikings following altercation

Former #Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland was released by the #Vikings. A reunion with Kansas City could depend on a number of factors. | from @TheJohnDillon

After a scuffle with coaches and players during a Minnesota Vikings practice this week, former Kansas City Chiefs standout Bashaud Breeland was waived on Saturday afternoon. It ends his time in Minnesota after signing with the team this past offseason. Once an impact player on a championship-contending roster, Breeland sought greener pastures following the Chiefs’ loss in Super Bowl LV, inking a one-year 3-million dollar contract with the Vikings to enter 2021.

Amid a series of struggles this season, especially given certain situations with their quarterback and a stagnant defense in the middle of a rebuild, the signing seems to have been a major miscalculation on both ends. The details surrounding the alleged fight in practice are bizarre, including mention of his cleats being removed after which a physical altercation took place. Either way, Breeland seems to have worn out his welcome in record time.

Despite this incident, Breeland is likely to be a waiver wire target when he becomes available and could become a key contributor on a playoff team that lacks depth in their secondary to compete with top offenses. Each franchise will make its own evaluation about what unfolded this week at Vikings practice, and decide for themselves if Breeland is worth whatever risk they may take in claiming him, but the prospect of adding a veteran playmaker at this point in the season has to be enticing for general managers.

Kansas City’s interest in a reunion could revolve around a number of factors, especially as COVID-19 concerns have gripped the NFL in recent weeks. If they’re in a position to make a claim on Breeland, it’ll mean about 25 other teams passed on his services for one reason or another. He could also clear waivers entirely and be signed to the practice squad instead. There is definitely a cost-benefit analysis to be made by Brett Veach should he see a need or feel a desire to make something work.

L’Jarius Sneed should make his return to the Chiefs’ secondary in Week 16, and as players make their way through COVID-19 protocols, the defense should start looking like its old self on paper again. The Chiefs’ 53-man roster currently stands at 49 players, so they have space to spare, even with those who are set to return from the COVID list.
