Report: Chargers request interview with Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Robinson

The Chargers are looking to bring Zac Robinson to interview for their offensive coordinator position.

As the Chargers look to find their next offensive coordinator, they requested to interview Rams quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Zac Robinson for the position, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero.

Robinson started as an Oklahoma State star quarterback in 2007-09. After that, he bounced around the NFL for four years, mainly as a practice-squad quarterback, and never appeared in a game. Robinson then became a quarterback trainer in the Dallas area and an analyst for Pro Football Focus.

Rams head coach Sean McVay, who has hired various young, inexperienced coaches, brought in Robinson as assistant quarterbacks coach. Robinson moved to assistant wide receivers coach in 2020, then back to assistant quarterbacks coach in 2021. When Kevin O’Connell got the Vikings head coaching job, McVay hired Robinson as quarterback coach and pass-game coordinator, where he elevated Matt Stafford and helped Baker Mayfield find success in L.A upon becoming the starter.

Chargers HC Brandon Staley is familiar with Robinson, having been on the Rams’ staff in 2020 when he was their defensive coordinator.

Baker Mayfield claimed by Rams after requesting release from Panthers

The Browns’ former first overall pick has found a new home on the west coast

Former first overall pick of the Cleveland Browns is now off to his third stop in six months as quarterback Baker Mayfield has been claimed off of the waiver wire by the Los Angeles Rams. Los Angeles was listed as one of his top landing spots at Browns Wire yesterday, and now that has come to fruition. Just yesterday, Mayfield requested his release from the Carolina Panthers as he had been phased out by Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker.

With Matthew Stafford’s season likely over, Mayfield may find himself starting again this season as the Rams have had to endure through John Wolford and Bryce Perkins under center in recent weeks. Mayfield is set for free agency after this season, so he has a chance to rebuild his image before hitting the open market once again.

What’s new with the Rams in 2022?

What’s new with the Los Angeles Rams since the Cardinals last faced them in the playoffs in January?

This Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals will take on their division rival Los Angeles Rams at State Farm Stadium.

The Cardinals look to be completely dead at halftime of Week 2’s contest in Las Vegas, but rallied in one of the more improbable comebacks in recent memory.

They suddenly find themselves with an opportunity to possibly take first place in the NFC West. So, what has changed since the Rams hoisted the Lombardi trophy a season ago?

The Rams made a few splash moves this offseason, as they typically do. The biggest two were the addition of former Chicago Bears receiver Allen Robinson and longtime Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Robinson did not have any impact on their Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills but found the endzone last week against the Falcons.

Wagner has looked solid to this point. Wagner was always dominant in games against the Rams, therefore they decided to bring him on their side.

Despite these additions, the Rams have not looked quite the part of the team that won the Super Bowl last season. That is mostly due to two major losses in linebacker Von Miller, who signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason, and receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who remains unsigned after he tore his ACL in the Super Bowl.

Prior to the Rams’ midseason acquisitions of Miller and Beckham, the Rams were a good, not great team. Without them, they may end up struggling.

The Rams did lose a few other starters of note. Cornerback Darious Williams signed a lucrative deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars and longtime punter Johnny Hekker is now punting for the Carolina Panthers.

The retirement of left tackle Andrew Whitworth, who was an anchor for Sean McVay since being hired, is worth noting. His loss has shown, as the Rams offensive line play has declined (partly due to injuries).

Here’s a full list of the Rams’ primary offseason moves:

Rams’ key offseason additions

  • WR Allen Robinson
  • ILB Bobby Wagner

Rams’ key offseason losses

  • OLB Von Miller
  • WR Odell Beckham Jr.
  • CB Darious Williams
  • LT Andrew Whitworth
  • WR Robert Woods

Falcons’ Todd Gurley hopes to mentor LA Rams rookie RB Cam Akers

Georgia football great Todd Gurley, now of the Atlanta Falcons, hopes to mentor to Los Angeles Rams rookie RB Cam Akers out of FSU.

The Los Angeles Rams turned to the NFL Draft to find their replacement for former NFL Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley, who now plays for the Atlanta Falcons.

The Rams, who released Gurley in March, selected Florida State running back Cam Akers with the 52nd overall pick.

The Rams and Gurley might not on the best terms right now due to Los Angeles still owing the former superstar a multi-million dollar payment, but Gurley said that he hopes to be able to mentor Akers as he begins his NFL career.

“Just because whatever I have going on with the Rams, (that) don’t make me upset or want to bash or downplay another man,” Gurley said on Friday’s episode of the UNINTERRUPTED: We Run This Station podcast.

“He’s making his dream come true, just like I made my dream come true in 2015. And they went and got this kid in the second round, so I just want to be able to just tell him or show him early too, just as far as like the way to move. And then everything that comes with LA is so much opportunity out here. It’s like even though I’m going to be playing in Atlanta, I’m going to still be out here during the offseason because I know the amount of opportunities and the relationships that I had and grew out here. So I want to be able to do the same thing for him, man.”

Coming out of high school, Akers was rated as the nation’s No. 3 overall prospect, playing for Clinton High School in his hometown of Clinton, Mississippi. Similar to Gurley, both came from a small-town and both played at a high level in college. Additionally, both had to learn how to adjust to playing in Los Angeles, one of America’s biggest markets, at a young age.

“He’s going to be a running back in the LA market. He’s going to be scoring touchdowns. He’s going to be making plays. So I want him to be able to be on the same type of thing I was on, but even more and at an earlier stage. So it’s just like everyone’s always talking a big game and saying they’re going to do this, they’re going to do that. It’s just about helping the youth. Whether they made it or not, just like when people go back in the communities and do community work, how about reach out to the young guy that’s coming up, that’s getting drafted or the young guy that don’t know anything and tell him.”

Gurley was taken with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. For four years, he was one of the best running backs in the NFL, if not the best. But after his knee began to bother him more and more, Gurley’s touches declined and the Rams would not say why. Gurley was criticized immensely, but never complained. He tuned out the noise and continued doing his thing. In five seasons, Gurley racked up 7, 494 total yards and 70 total touchdowns. His 5,404 rushing yards ranks sixth all-time in Rams history.

“He just made his dream come true, so why not make this guy even better? And obviously, he’s got to focus on the field and stuff like that,” Gurley said, still speaking of Akers. “And that’s going to take care of itself. He’s going to be with a great offense. He’s going to be making plays. He got (quarterback Jared Goff). He got (wide receiver) Robert Woods. He got (wide receiver) Cooper Kupp. He got the opportunity right there in front of him. So I just want to maximize it and take off.”

TEAM NEEDS

Linebacker

The Rams lost a key play-maker in Cory Littleton, who signed with the Raiders earlier this offseason. Micah Kiser, Kenny Young and Travin Howard will all be fighting for a starting job, but adding a premiere linebacker who has proven to do it all should be a priority.

Offensive Line

The interior part of the line is made up of David Edwards, Austin Blythe, Austin Corbett, Joseph Noteboom and Brian Allen. While they will all be fighting for starting jobs, the Rams could benefit from a surefire starter. A tackle could be prioritized, as well. Rather than hanging up the cleats, 38-year old Andrew Whitworth signed a three-year deal. There’s still the possibility of Whitworth retiring after this upcoming season, so planning to find his successor could be near the top of the to-do list.

Edge Rusher

In 2019, the Rams only had two players in double-figures for sacks, and three players over five sacks for the season. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald led the team in sacks by no surprise, and edge rushers Dante Fowler and Clay Matthews were the next two in the category. The Rams added Leonard Floyd, and they also have Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Samson Ebukam on the roster, but it’ll be hard to replicate Fowler and Matthews’ production from last season.

Wide Receiver

With the loss of Brandin Cooks, who was traded to the Texans, the Rams could use another wide receiver to stretch the field and draw defenders away from the box to join Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods.

TOP TARGETS

Terrell Lewis | EDGE | Alabama

Julian Okwara | EDGE | Notre Dame

Lloyd Cushenberry | OL | LSU

Matt Peart | OT | UConn

Hakeem Adeniji | OT | Kansas

Jordyn Brooks | LB | Texas Tech

Akeem Davis-Gaither | LB | Appalachian State

Video: Georgia Bulldog Todd Gurley is coming home

Georgia Bulldog legend Todd Gurley signed with the Atlanta Falcons and is returning home. He released a video to celebrate.

Georgia Bulldog legend Todd Gurley is returning to the Peach State. Gurley signed a one-year deal to join the Atlanta Falcons. With Gurley and a couple of other free agent additions the Falcons could become the first team in NFL history to start 11 first-round picks on offense.

It didn’t take Todd Gurley much time to pick a free agent destination following his surprise release from the Los Angeles Rams. Gurley knew he wanted to return to Georgia.

To commemorate his return to Georgia, Todd Gurley and Roc Nation Sports released an awesome video celebrating his career and his exciting return to the state of the Georgia:

What an amazing video. It’s worth a couple of views. Todd Gurley was a joy to watch at the University of Georgia and has been outstanding in the NFL. Despite some injury concerns, Gurley still has a lot left in the tank.

Gurley will be fun to watch on the Atlanta Falcons, who are coming off a disappointing 7-9 season. The Falcons are in a stacked division with Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints and Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Atlanta is going to need an epic season from Gurley to make the expanded NFL Postseason.
