Report: Lions initially asked Rams for Aaron Donald in Matthew Stafford trade

The Lions asked for Aaron Donald in the Rams’ trade for Matthew Stafford, but LA said no.

With no first-round pick in 2021, the Los Angeles Rams had less to offer the Detroit Lions than some other teams for Matthew Stafford, including the Carolina Panthers. And because of that, they had to give Detroit two first-rounders in 2022 and 2023, along with Jared Goff.

But initially, the Lions wanted a much more valuable asset: Aaron Donald.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions initially asked the Rams for Donald in their trade for Stafford. Of course, the Rams said no, and the teams decided on another package to get the deal done.

There was absolutely no chance the Rams would trade Donald, who just won his third Defensive Player of the Year award. He’s arguably the best defender in the NFL and the most valuable player on the Rams’ roster.

The Rams still gave up a lot to get Stafford, but not as much as giving away Donald would have cost them.

Watch: UGA great Matthew Stafford’s legendary mic’d up moment

Watch Georgia great Matthew Stafford in one of the best mic’d up moments ever here.

Former Georgia Bulldog All-American Matthew Stafford is widely considered as one of the toughest quarterbacks in the NFL.

After 12 seasons with the Detroit Lions, Stafford will be bringing his toughness to the L.A. Rams next season after a blockbuster trade involving draft picks and Rams quarterback Jared Goff was finalized on Saturday.

Here’s a little preview of what to expect Rams fans:

Just incredible commitment and competitiveness from Stafford there. He dislocates his shoulder and then lines up and throws a game-winning touchdown against the Browns in his rookie season.

Twitter reacts to Matt Stafford news

Twitter reacts as former Georgia football QB Matt Stafford has been traded from the Lions to the Rams for Jared Goff and picks.

On Saturday, news broke that former Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford had been traded from the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff.

Adam Schefter was the first to report the news, and added that the Lions will receive a third-round pick in 2021, a first-round pick in 2022 and a first-round pick in 2023.

The deal, however, cannot be made official until the start of the new league year on March 17.

Twitter went wild for the news of the two No. 1 picks being swapped.

Why the Rams won the Stafford-Goff trade in an absolute landslide

Sometimes, trades are close in their competition. Not in this case. The Rams just fleeced the Lions in the Jared Goff-Matthew Stafford trade.

Yes, the Rams now have no first-round picks through at least the 2024 season. They may have thrown their first-rounders out of the equation through an entire Presidential administration that just started if they get a little frisky down the road. But in today’s NFL, when you believe that you have a team that is all the way there outside of the most important position on the field, you have to do whatever it takes to get yourself out of that.

Look. The Rams were nuts in the first place for giving Jared Goff the kind of contract extension they gave him back in September, 2019 — a contract which revealed the franchise’s belief that Goff was a quarterback on the rise. As I wrote at the time, the tape and stats showed very different stories. So, the Rams made a really big, bad mistake — they overbet on a quarterback they believed to be better than he ever will be.

But even with offloading their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 for Matthew Stafford, the Rams have now done the smart thing a franchise does when it’s that most important position away from actual greatness. They went out and got a quarterback who is absolutely better than the guy they got in every possible way… and they got another franchise to accept the debt of the terrible extension they signed him to in the first place.

Because let’s be clear about this. If you want to talk about Matthew Stafford in terms of QUARTERBACK WINZ, just sit outside while the adults are talking. Jared Goff has benefited through his NFL career with his relationship with Sean McVay. Matthew Stafford has had to navigate through a series of dumpster fires through most of his NFL career, and as I posited in a Stafford tape piece last week, Stafford lives on an entirely different plane.

Why Matthew Stafford will be a franchise-defining bargain for his new NFL team

Everything McVay wants to do — passing out of run-heavy sets, play- and run-action, the ability to hit total route concepts all over the field — Stafford is far better at all of this than Goff will ever be. Period, full stop. And the Rams have a $33 million cap hit for Stafford in 2021, and a $26 million cap hit in 2022. Stafford will turn 33 on February 7. There’s a lot of meat on the bone.

As for the Lions? They have all kinds of draft picks, but they’ve married themselves to one of the league’s more limited quarterbacks through the next couple of years, and the debt is frightening.

Sometimes, you have to look beyond the obvious to see how things work in the future. The Rams got a much, much, better quarterback at a time when they have everything else they need to contend. The Lions just hamstrung themselves with a supremely limited quarterback at a time when they’re going through a massive rebuild. Draft picks or not, the Rams won this trade in a landslide, and that’s why.

Lions trade Matthew Stafford in blockbuster deal with Rams

The Detroit Lions are trading starting quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff and several first round picks

The Detroit Lions are trading starting quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams for Jared Goff, two future first-round picks, and a third-round pick. Matthew Stafford, a former No. 1 overall pick out of the University of Georgia, requested a trade from the organization this offseason and was receiving significant interest on the market.

The Los Angeles Rams and head coach Sean McVay quickly acted and now they have a new franchise quarterback. Jared Goff, another former No. 1 overall pick, is presumed to be the starter in Detroit.

Matthew Stafford joins a Rams team who had the top defense in the league last season. Los Angeles finished the season 10-6, but was reliant on their elite defense. The Rams struggled at times offensively, especially when compared to previous years.

Jared Goff and the Rams lost in the Division Round of the postseason to the Green Bay Packers. That defeat ending up being Goff’s final game with Los Angeles.

Now, Goff will join former Rams executive Brad Holmes in Detroit. Holmes in now the Lions’ general manager and is looking to rebuild following a 5-11 season. Goff has decent weapons in Detroit like D’Andre Swift, T.J. Hockenson, but new head coach Dan Campbell is looking to re-sign Lions No. 1 wide receiver Kenny Golladay.

The Untouchables: 5 players Washington couldn’t part with in a trade for QB ‘X’

There are a lot of ways that Washington could potentially get a trade for a QB done, but these five players might be off-limits.

I know it’s the offseason, but if you were keeping tabs on Washington Football Twitter on Wednesday, then you were in for quite a treat. An asinine suggestion brought on a disagreement and argument between several notable beat reporters, all stemming from the thought that Washington might part ways with a player like Chase Young in a trade for Matthew Stafford.

As is usually the case when it comes to arguing on Twitter, nothing much was settled, and no winner was declared. However, it got us thinking about the real question at hand: Who is on Washington’s No-Trade List?

Depending on the player that they’re trading for, that answer will change, but for the sake of the argument, we are going to keep someone like Deshaun Watson off the board — there’s almost nobody you wouldn’t involve in a trade for him. Bur for someone like Stafford, or Matt Ryan? Is there a handful of guys that Washington would for sure protect? Here’s our list of guys that are off-limits in a trade of such caliber.

Why Matthew Stafford will be a franchise-defining bargain for his new NFL team

We’ve forgotten how great Matthew Stafford still is, but quarterback-needy teams should remember right about now.

The Saturday news that Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has agreed with the team to part ways probably shocked the football world.

But when you consider it from this perspective, perhaps it’s not such a surprise.

Stafford’s Lions teams have made the playoffs just three times, and he’s been the franchise quarterback since 2009. In that timespan, Stafford ranks fifth in passing attempts (6,224), sixth in completions (3,898), seventh in passing yards (45,109), seventh in passing touchdowns (282), and fifth in interceptions (144), tied with Drew Brees. Stafford has been a high-volume quarterback in several different offensive systems that didn’t always play to his strengths.

Over the last two seasons, Stafford has become a bit of a forgotten man when it comes time to discuss the league’s better quarterbacks. He was rolling at a near-MVP clip in the 2009 season before he missed half the season with a back injury, completing 64.3% of his passes for 19 touchdowns, just five interceptions, and a passer rating of 106.0. In the 2020 season, Stafford completed 64.2% of his passes for 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions and a passer rating of 96.3, which was completely obstructed by the Matt Patricia-led circus the franchise had become. When people are too busy making fun of your team’s defense, they tend to overlook your attributes as a quarterback.

But it could easily be argued that Stafford’s last two seasons have been among his best, and this is why any team in need of a quarterback over the next 3-5 years should be more interested in offing their first-round pick to the Lions as opposed to rolling the dice on any draft-ready quarterback not named Trevor Lawrence. Unless, of course, you can grab Deshaun Watson for a bag of Big League Chew and a couple of fifth-round picks in one of the Texans’ weirder moments.

Outside of that, we’re talking about a guy who can still define a franchise — now and in the future. Stafford will turn 33 next month, and the way things are going in the NFL today, that could give him a full decade left in the league, playing at a high level. Let’s dig into the stats and the tape, and investigate just how good Stafford still is.

Twitter, Lions GM refute Matthew Stafford trade rumors

The Detroit Lions and members across sports media are denying the report of Matthew Stafford trade talks.

The recent trade rumors regarding Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford appear to not be true. According to the Lions General Manager, Detroit is not looking to move on from the former Georgia Bulldog QB.

Stafford, who ended the 2019 season on IR, is unlikely to be traded because the Lions coaching staff is in win-now mode and will likely lose their jobs if they have another underwhelming season.

Still, some outlets in Detroit and across the nation are reporting that the Lions have had ‘talks’ regarding their star QB:

The rest of Twitter and the Lions organization shot down these reports:

Stafford is additionally unlikely to be traded due to this contract situation. His contract is far more tradable next off-season:

Stafford was fantastic in 2019, so that makes this rumor even less likely. Stafford threw 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions in eight games. He posted a career high 106.0 quarterback rating.

I do think it is possible for the Lions to be involved in a first round draft day trade. With the third overall pick and NFL teams desperate to find a suitable QB, expect teams to be calling to move up and select Tua Tagovailoa, assuming Tagovailoa has good medicals at the NFL Combine. The Miami Dolphins, who pick fifth, and have loads of picks are a candidate to select Tua. Will they trade up to do so?
