9 things to know about new Bills DT Linval Joseph

From his dream job without football to history with snow, get to know new #Bills DT Linval Joseph:

The Buffalo Bills made multiple additions during the week of the 2023 NFL trade deadline. Capping them off was the addition of defensive tackle Linval Joseph.

The 35-year-old has been around the block in the NFL. The Bills (5-3) will be his fifth stop in the league after signing with the club as a free agent.

As a veteran, Joseph will have a chance to feature in Buffalo’s long-standing rotation along the defensive line. How quickly he gets settled in will now be the question–But in the meantime, get to know him a bit more before he takes the field.

Here are nine things to know about the new Bills defensive lineman:

Bills’ Rasul Douglas, Leonard Fournette, Linval Joseph pick new numbers

#Bills’ Rasul Douglas, Leonard Fournette, Linval Joseph pick new numbers:

The Buffalo Bills decided to bring in a trio of new players on this week as the 2023 NFL trade deadline went down.

The Bills (5-3) landed cornerback Rasul Douglas in a deal with the Green Bay Packers. Then via the free agency route, running back Leonard Fournette and defensive lineman Linval Joseph were signed.

Days later, they took in their first ever practice in Buffalo. But before even doing that, Douglas, Fournette and Joseph had another mission to accomplish: Picking a new number that they will wear as members of the Bills.

Check out all the new numbers that will be on the field for the Bills moving forward:

Bills sign Linval Joseph: Highlights from his first practice

#Bills sign Linval Joseph: Highlights from his first practice:

The Buffalo Bills have welcomed Linval Joseph to Orchard Park.

Joseph, 35, signed with the team this week and quickly got on the field for his first practice at One Bills Drive.

Joseph is expected to have a role in Buffalo’s defensive line rotation the team has long run. He’s known as a space-eating player, similar to the type of defender the Bills lost when D-lineman DaQuan Jones went down due to a pectoral injury.

To check out Joseph getting after it during his first workout with his new team, see the attached video clips shared by local media members in the list below:

Buffalo Bills sign Linval Joseph

A new defender for the #Bills:

The Buffalo Bills have signed defensive tackle Linval Joseph, adding him to their D-line rotation.

The team announced the transaction on Wednesday.

Joseph, 35, takes cornerback Kaiir Elam’s place on the roster. The former 2022 first-round pick of the Bills (5-3) was placed on injured reserve.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Joseph has signed a contract worth up to $3.72 million for the remainder of the year. The wording appears to point toward his contract being incentive based.

Joseph is known as the type of defensive tackle the Bills had recently lost. Buffalo’s DaQuan Jones ended up on injured reserve due to a pectoral injury. Jones and Joseph both provide an ability to take up space in the middle of a defensive line, eating up blockers so others can produce.

Joseph was originally a second-round pick of the New York Giants back in 2010. He won Super Bowl XLVI with the franchise.

In addition to the Giants, Joseph has played for the Minnesota Vikings (2014-2019), Los Angeles Chargers (2020-2021) and Philadelphia Eagles.

His tenure with the Eagles was in 2022 and similar to his upcoming one in Buffalo. He signed with the Eagles midway through last season and eventually suited up for the team in last year’s Super Bowl.

Bills Wire will continue to provide all updates regarding the team’s roster throughout the 2023 season.

Bills sign former Eagles’ DT Linval Joseph to a deal

10 free agent defensive linemen Broncos should consider signing

The Broncos’ defensive line depth was thin even before Eyioma Uwazurike was suspended. Here’s a quick list of 10 free agents available.

The Denver Broncos’ defensive line depth chart took another hit on Monday.

The league announced that Broncos second-year defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike has been suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games in 2022. Even before losing Uwazurike for at least the 2023 season, Denver’s defensive line depth was already thin.

The Broncos lost both Dre’Mont Jones and DeShawn Williams — their starting defensive ends in 2022 — during free agency this spring. Zach Allen was signed to replace Jones, but the team did not sign a direct replacement for Williams, who started 15 games last season.

With Uwazurike suspended, the team’s remaining defensive linemen are Allen, D.J. Jones, Mike Purcell, Matt Henningsen, Jonathan Harris, Tyler Lancaster, Jordan Jackson, Elijah Garcia, PJ Mustipher and Haggai Ndubuisi.

Purcell will begin training camp this week on the non-football injury list after undergoing surgery this offseason. With Purcell sidelined, Henningsen (a second-year player with no starts on his resume) is currently the team’s No. 3 defensive lineman behind Allen and Jones.

It seems fair to say Denver could use some more depth at the position. Here’s a quick list of 10 free agent defensive linemen the Broncos should consider signing following Uwazurike’s suspension.

98 days until Vikings season opener: Every player to wear No. 98

D.J. Wonnum currently wears the number, but who else has worn No. 98 for the Vikings?

It’s the final countdown…

Well, sort of.

The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2023 regular season in 98 days at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

From now until then, we will take a trip down memory lane and count each day by revisiting the players that have worn that specific jersey number.

Edge rusher D.J. Wonnum currently wears the number for the Vikings and has worn it since 2020. Players like defensive tackle Linval Joseph and Letroy Guion have also claimed the number.

With 98 days until kickoff, here’s a look at every player to wear No. 98 with the Vikings (via Pro Football Reference):

The best NFL free agents remaining, pre-minicamp edition

As workouts and mandatory minicamps get underway in June, here are the best free agents left on the open market.

The end of May presents NFL teams with a brief respite in the action before offseason workouts begin at the start of June, and mandatory minicamps get underway in mid-June. From there, it’s a mad dash to the preseason, and all that comes after.

As teams prepare for minicamps and training camps, they’re also looking at the remaining holes in their rosters that they were unable to fill through the first wave of free agency and the draft. Even as summer comes, there’s still a fairly long list of players available as free agents who can help those teams fill those holes. Surprise releases can add to that talent, as the Arizona Cardinals’ release of receiver DeAndre Hopkins did last week.

The All-22: What DeAndre Hopkins has to offer his next NFL team

So here are the best remaining free agents left on the open market.

The best available NFL free agents (post-compensatory pick edition)

Now that the draft is over, and compensatory picks are out of the free agency formula, here are the best free agents left on the open market.

On May 2, a contractual change happened in the NFL that will affect how (and how many) free agents still left on the boards are signed. On that date, free agent signings no longer add to the league’s formula for compensatory picks, meaning that NL teams can sign free agents without future picks going to the NFL teams those players previously played for.

That, along with the incoming minicamps, will have teams looking with a new eye at the league’s remaining free agents with a focus on which ones remaining will best fit their rosters, and best fill the remaining craters in those rosters. At this point in this process, none of these players are necessarily franchise-defining pieces, but you know how it goes. In the NFL, at some point, the bottom third of your roster will be just as important at the top third, and here are the guys who can fill that bottom third quite estimably.

With all that in mind, here are the best remaining free agents in the NFL — at least, for now.
