New York Jets protect former UGA WR on their practice squad

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Lawrence Cager signed to the New York Jets practice squad to start the season

Former Georgia wide receiver Lawrence Cager signed to the New York Jets practice squad to start the season. Now, the Jets are designating Cager as one of four players who they’re protecting on their practice squad.

Cager played one season for the Georgia Bulldogs after transferring from Miami.  Cager was plagued with injuries during his collegiate career and endured multiple ankle injuries in 2019 with Georgia.

Despite the injuries, Cager helped the Bulldogs make their third straight SEC Championship Game.  He was second on the team in receptions (33) and receiving yards (476). Cager also caught four touchdowns for the Dawgs and won countless jump balls.

His ability to win contested catches should translate to the NFL. The biggest challenge for Cager will be gaining separation from NFL defensive backs.

The Jets signed Cager as an undrafted free agent this offseason but waived prior to the season.  The following day, New York signed Cager to their practice squad.

Cager is trending towards making his first appearance in the NFL this week. The Jets have mounting injuries at the wide receiver position. Jamison Crowder (hamstring), Breshad Perriman (ankle), and Denzel Mims (IR with hamstring injury) are all expected to miss this week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. This opens the door for Lawrence Cager.

Report: Bengals held pre-NFL Draft FaceTime meeting with Georgia football WR

Per a report, the Cincinnati Bengals held an NFL Draft meeting with Georgia football WR Lawrence Cager.

If you’re a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, you’re hopeful that the franchise uses one of its picks in this week’s NFL Draft to add some depth to the wide receiver position.

Against the wishes of the former Georgia Bulldog, the Bengals placed a franchise tag on A.J. Green, meaning he has to stay in Cincinnati for one more season before hitting free agency.

The Bengals could use some help at the position regardless of what Green decides to do next offseason, and that’s why SBNation’s CincyJungle is trilled about the fact that the team finally met with a wide receiver ahead of the draft.

Per Justin Melo of USA TODAY Sports Media Groups’ Draft Wire, the Bengals held a FaceTime meeting with Georgia wide receiver Lawrence Cager.

Per the report, Cager also remotely met with the the New York Jets.

But the Jets don’t currently have A.J. Green on their roster, so for right now let’s focus on Cager and the Bengals, a much more exciting pairing for Georgia fans.

From CincyJungle:

If you’re looking for size at a discount, Cager is your pass catcher. The 22-year old measured in at 6-5 and 220 pounds with over 33” arms at the NFL Combine. With all that length, it was a bit surprising to see his hands measure in at under 9” (8 7/8”).

Playing with a better quarterback in Jake Fromm did help Cager’s production in just nine games (33 receptions, 476 yards, four touchdowns), but it wasn’t anything earth-shattering.

Similar to Green, Cager is a tall, possession receiver. Neither will blow past you with their speed, but both have the body control, route running skills and the hands to come down with highly contested catches.

Don’t expect to hear Cager’s name called before the fifth or sixth round, but he’s a guy who possesses all the tools to have a long and successful NFL career.

Had it not been for a series of injuries, Cager would likely be viewed as a third round draft choice. Before going down with a season ending ankle injury, he had 33 catches for 476 yards and four touchdowns. He did that while battling through a shoulder and rib injury as well.

The Bengals will likely use their first overall pick to select LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. Expect a spike in Green’s numbers next season, and if Cager is added to the roster, look for some promising rookie numbers for the one-year Bulldog.

Green missed the entire 2019 season after he suffered torn ligaments in his ankle.

Tim Tebow: Lawrence Cager injury is ‘drastic’ loss for UGA football

Tim Tebow thinks that Georgia football will suffer from the loss of Lawrence Cager.

Georgia wide receiver Lawrence Cager will miss UGA’s next two games after suffering an ankle injury in practice this week.

Not exactly what a team with a struggling offense needs. College football analyst Tim Tebow believes this is a huge loss for the Dawgs, who will need to score points vs LSU.

“I think it’s drastic,” Tebow said on SportsCenter. “The number one problem this year is they haven’t had receivers that can separate. They haven’t been able to do it in big-time games, and I think that’s really hurt the offense. They have a great offensive line. They have a great quarterback and running game, but they don’t have receivers who can win man-to-man coverage. And now, you’ve lost by far your best receiver in Cager. So, this is where someone is going to have to step up. If Georgia is going to win an SEC Championship and contend for a national championship, George Pickens, (Dominick) Blaylock and (Demetris) Robertson have to step up and be that guy. There’s still a chance for them because their defense is also one of the best in the country.”

It is a significant loss indeed, and as Tebow said, the Dawgs’ younger receivers will have to step up to the challenge in order to replace Cager’s production.

Georgia football’s Lawrence Cager likely out for SEC Championship

Georgia football’s Lawrence Cager is likely out for 2019 SEC Championship against the LSU Tigers. Cager suffered an ankle injury.

Georgia Bulldog star wide receiver Lawrence Cager is likely out for the SEC Championship Game against the LSU Tigers. Cager suffered an ankle injury this past week in practice. Cager, a transfer from Miami, has made a big impact on UGA’s passing attack and is one of the best players in the nation at the jump ball.

Georgia will need Jake Fromm, George Pickens, and more to step up. It’ll be Georgia’s only hope of making the College Football Playoff. Cager posted an emotional message to his Instagram account:

Georgia wouldn’t be 10-1 without Cager, who score clutch second half touchdowns in the Florida and Notre Dame games. It remains to be seen if Cager could suit up for the Playoffs, but let’s be honest, the SEC Championship Game is a de facto playoff game.

Cager has 476 receiving yards and four touchdowns on the season. He was dealing with a shoulder and rib injury before suffering the most recent ankle issue. Best of luck to Cager in his recovery!
