NBA hardship contracts: Top performances by 10-day signees

Rookie Wire took a look at the top performances by players on 10-day hardship contracts.

The month of December proved to be a rather difficult time for teams and players alike in the NBA after dealing with the latest outbreak of the coronavirus.

Over 200 players entered the health and safety protocol in December and 11 games were postponed as a result of the outbreak. Teams have called up nearly 100 players from the NBA G League to replace those in the protocol, creating opportunities for under-the-radar guys.

With several roster players sidelined in the protocol, teams relied on those call-ups to field teams and avoid further postponements. Several players signed via hardship exception took advantage of the opportunity and made a name for themselves.

The performances by those players will go a long way in securing long-term contracts in the NBA. The latest obstacle surrounding the coronavirus certainly proved to be difficult but one uplifting consequence is seeing several players realizing the opportunity of a lifetime.

With most teams through the worst of the latest coronavirus outbreak, Rookie Wire took a look at some of the top performances by players signed via hardship contracts. We will continue to update this list with each notable outing.

Jimmy Butler leads Heat past Jaeā€™Sean Tate, Rockets on New Yearā€™s Eve

Jaeā€™Sean Tate led the Rockets 22 points (60% FG) and 7 rebounds in his return from a health and safety protocols stint, but Houston couldnā€™t fully overcome an early 25-point deficit versus Miami.

Jimmy Butler was questionable going into Friday with a right ankle sprain, but the five-time All-Star played through the pain and lifted his Miami Heat to a 120-110 road victory (box score) at Houstonā€™s Toyota Center to spoil the New Yearā€™s Eve home game for the Rockets.

Butler scored a game-high 37 points on 12-of-21 shooting (57.1%), including 11-of-11 on free throws and 2-of-3 on 3-pointers (66.7%). Reserve guard Kyle Guy added 17 points and 4 assists on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range (66.7%) ā€” with nearly all coming in the first half.

That helped Miami (23-13) build a 25-point buffer in the second quarter, and while Houston (10-26) cut the lead to as little as 5 in the fourth, getting completely over the hump proved too much to ask.

In his first game since returning from a stint in the NBAā€™s health and safety protocols, Jaeā€™Sean Tate led the Rockets with 22 points and 7 rebounds, shooting 9-of-15 from the field (60.0%) and 2-of-3 on 3-pointers (66.7%). Big man Christian Wood added 18 points (8-of-14 shooting, 57.1%), 8 rebounds, and 4 assists for Houston, while rookie Jalen Green scored 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting (45.5%) in 28 minutes.

Fellow rookie Alperen Sengun left the game early with a right ankle sprain, though head coach Stephen Silas said postgame that he did not yet have an update about whether he would miss games moving forward.

The Rockets, who now enter 2022 looking to snap a six-game losing streak, will play the second end of a home New Yearā€™s back-to-back on Saturday ā€” with tipoff versus Denver set for 7:00 p.m. CST at Toyota Center. Until then, scroll on for Fridayā€™s highlights and postgame reaction.

Ty Jerome named his top 3 Virginia teammates based on skillset

The Suns rookie recently answered questions on Twitter and recounted some of his best teammates from over the years.

[jwplayer A1TsVfxI]

Ty Jerome experienced the ultimate ups and downs over his three years at Virginia and managed to play with some talented players during that timeframe.

Of course, Jerome was a member of the 2019 national championship team that defeated Texas Tech but was also on the same team that lost to No. 16 seed UMBC the previous year in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Jerome recently held a Q&A on Twitter and answered a variety of questions from fans, including the top teammates he has played with by skillset in high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, De’Andre Hunter and Kyle Guy each made the cut.

Led by Jerome, Hunter and Guy, the Cavaliers had a stacked roster that probably should have competed for at least another championship. In any case, the Virginia basketball program has become one of the best in the nation in recent years as Tony Bennett has helped produce several NBA players during his tenure as head coach.

LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow became the No. 1 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday night.

Burrow was widely expected to be the top pick after an incredible senior year at LSU in which he passed for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns en route to the national championship.

With Burrow in tow now, one noted Bengals fan offered his services on offense.

The Sacramento Kings mocked up each of their players in a football uniform on Twitter ahead of the NFL Draft and rookie Kyle Guy proceeded to volunteer himself as an option at wide receiver next season.

Guy was born in Indianapolis but spent a part of his childhood in Cincinnati and grew fond of the Bengals. He even played quarterback growing up but is apparently ready to switch to wide receiver.

For Guy, and Bengals fans alike, Thursday proved to be a pivotal moment for the franchise as Burrow projects to give the team stability at the quarterback position for years to come.

Kyle Guy hilariously noticed his verified check was removed on Twitter

The Kings rookie noticed his verified, blue check was removed from his Twitter account on Thursday afternoon.

Sacramento Kings rookie Kyle Guy may not be coping all that well during the indefinite suspension of the NBA regular season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The former Virginia product updated his Twitter followers on Thursday afternoon that he noticed his verified, blue check was removed from his account.

Verified users on Twitter can lose their blue check for a variety of reasons, most commonly after changing their username, which appears to be the case with Guy.

After some intense research, Guy was previously listed by the Kings on the team’s official game notes as @kylejguy5 but the rookie tweeted on Thursday from @kylejguy.

Guy, like most around the United States, has likely spent a bit more time on social media with the NBA on hiatus from the regular season, which could last until June.

To sum up: Guy will have plenty of time to get his check back before the season resumes.

Ranking the 30 best players of the 2019-20 NBA G League season

With the NBA G League season likely to be canceled soon, Rookie Wire took a look at the best players to suit up this year.

As the NBA braces for a lengthy hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the growing belief around the league is that the G League season will soon be canceled.

The G League regular season was set to conclude on March 28 and the decision to end play is likely an easy one to make given the financial burden it places on organizations. While the season will soon be canceled, all G League players will be paid through the end of the year.

The NBA itself is preparing for the possibility of returning to play in mid-to-late June as the best-case scenario after the CDC recommended on Sunday that all events with 50 or more people be canceled for two months to help slow the spread of the virus.

With the G League likely set to be canceled, Rookie Wire decided to take a look at the best players to suit up this season as there have been some spectacular performances from around the league.

Players must have appeared in at least 20 games to be considered. Stats were used from the NBA G League, Basketball-Reference and RealGM.

30. Donta Hall, Grand Rapids Drive

Hall, who finished second in double-doubles among all players with 22, emerged as a strong post player with the Drive this season. He was named to theĀ 2019-20 Midseason All-NBA G League Team and was solid all season long in his first year as a professional.

29. Christ Koumadje, Delaware Blue Coats

The 7-foot-4 center led the G League in blocks with four per game and was seventh in rebounding. He recorded two triple-doubles this season with points, rebounds and blocks and tied the mark for most rebounds in a game by an individual player at 24.

28. Kyle Alexander, Sioux Falls Skyforce

Alexander quickly became one of the best big men in the league this season and his play resulted in a two-way contract from the Miami Heat. He finished fifth in blocks and 14th in rebounding with the Skyforce to cap a productive first year.

27. Eric Mika, Stockton Kings

The former BYU product placed 29th in scoring among all players and second in rebounding. Mika recorded 16 double-doubles and tied the G League season-high of 24 rebounds by an individual player. He eventually earned a 10-day contract from the Kings in February but was not signed to a second one.

26. Paul Watson, Raptors 905

Watson was named to the 2019-20 Midseason All-NBA G League Team and continued his strong play for the rest of the season. Watson scored in double figures in each of his 30 games played in the G League and eventually earned a two-way contract from the Toronto Raptors.

Kings’ Kyle Guy dropped 37 points in the G League on Friday night

The former Virginia guard drained seven 3-pointers with the Stockton Kings in the loss to the Oklahoma City Blue.

Sacramento Kings two-way rookie Kyle Guy recorded 37 points Friday night in the G League with the Stockton Kings in a 147-117 loss to the Oklahoma City Blue.

The former Virginia guard drained seven 3-pointers in the loss and finished by shooting 15-of-29 from the field in 38 minutes of work. Guy also added two rebounds, two steals and one assist.

The performance by Guy came just one week after he made his official NBA debut with the Kings. Guy went scoreless in three minutes off of the bench as head coach Luke Walton emptied the bench in a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Guy has emerged as one of the top scorers so far in the G League this season. He is averaging 20.9 points, 4.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 23 games played. In addition to scoring 37 points on Friday, Guy recorded a season-high 42 points on Nov. 30. His 42-point performance still ranks as theĀ third-highest individual performance this season.

Kyle Guy made his official NBA debut with the Kings on Friday night

After spending much of the season in the G League, Kyle Guy saw his first minutes in the NBA on Friday night against the Bucks.

After spending much of the season in the G League, Sacramento Kings two-way rookie Kyle Guy made his official NBA debut on Friday night during a 127-106 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The former Virginia guard logged just under three minutes in the contest as head coach Luke Walton emptied his bench with the Kings trailing by 16 points to the Bucks. Guy became the eighth Virginia player to appear in an NBA game this season.

Rookie players are taking over the NBA G League in 2019-20

Among the top scorers in the G League this season, five players in the top 10 are first-year players.

As the NBA G League approaches the one-month mark of the season, several players have performed well and are off to great starts with many of those outings coming from the 2019 NBA Draft class.

Among the top scorers in the G League, five players in the top 10 are rookies and two first-year players, Kyle Guy and Marial Shayok, hold the top individual scoring performances of the season with 42 points each.

With most players having suited up in around 8-10 games, Rookie Wire took a look at those rookies that are making an impact with their respective clubs this season.

Jeremiah Martin, Sioux Falls Skyforce

The former Memphis forward is currently second in total scoring (242) this season and leads all rookies to this point. Martin is averaging 22 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 11 games for the Skyforce.

Martin has shown no problems transitioning to the G League as he has seven games scoring at least 20 points, including three 30-plus games. He is converting on 52.8% of his shots, including 33.3% from 3-point range.

NBA teams previously had a wealth of free-agent talent available in the G League player pool but the addition of two-way contracts has made a dent in the number of available players to sign.

Martin could be one of those players to target this season.
