In aftermath of fight, NBA suspends Houston’s Jabari Smith Jr. for Monday’s game vs. Portland

In the aftermath of Saturday’s physical altercation, the NBA suspended Utah’s Kris Dunn for two games and Houston’s Jabari Smith Jr. for one.

The NBA suspended Utah Jazz guard Kris Dunn for two games and Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. for one, citing their roles in an on-court altercation during Saturday’s game in Houston.

Smith will miss Monday’s home game versus Portland. Veteran Jeff Green is his likely replacement in Houston’s starting lineup.

From the league’s announcement:

Dunn was suspended two games without pay for initiating an altercation and throwing a punch at Smith Jr., who was suspended one game for fighting with Dunn, it was announced by Joe Dumars, executive vice president and head of basketball operations (for the NBA).

The incident, for which both were assessed technical fouls and ejected, occurred with 11:55 remaining in the second quarter of the Rockets’ 147-119 win over Utah.

Dunn will begin to serve his suspension on Monday, when the Jazz host Dallas. Smith Jr. will serve his suspension that night when the Rockets host Portland.

Extended video of the exchange can be viewed below, along with postgame comments by Dunn (audio) on his perspective. Smith was not made available to reporters by the Rockets, though he did react with “Lol” on social media shortly after Sunday’s announcement.

Could Danny Ainge do the Boston Celtics a solid with a late Kris Dunn deal?

What do we know about the possibility of a last-minute Dunn deal being a done deal (pun intended)?

Could Utah Jazz President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge do his former ball club a last-minute favor and help the Boston Celtics fortify their backcourt rotation? There have been conflicting reports on whether the Celtics are actually going to make any more moves ahead of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline, but if Boston did make a trade for Jazz guard Kris Dunn, they’d have among the best defensive squads in the league.

And they already have that, which ought to tell you all you know about how tough of an out they would become on that end of the court. But as with all things Trader Danny, would the ask be too high for the Celtics to pay?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” and ” Talkin’ Cs” podcasts linked up to talk about the possibility of a last-minute Dunn deal being a done deal (pun intended).

Boston rumored to be interested in trading for Utah Jazz floor general

As with Kelly Olynyk, a trade for Dunn would be a reunion of sorts, if only technically.

It seems the Boston Celtics have a lot of interest in players on the Utah Jazz as potential trade targets. MassLive’s Brian Robb reports that in addition to former Boston big man Kelly Olynyk and Italian forward Simone Fontecchio, that the Celtics might want to trade for defensive-minded point guard Kris Dunn as well.

“The Jazz have two players that could fit the bill on that front as the team has kicked the tires on 6-foot-7 Italian forward Simone Fontecchio and former lottery pick Kris Dunn,” writes Robb. As with Olynyk, a trade for Dunn would be a reunion of sorts. But only of the technical variety, as the Providence alum was dealt to Boston in the move to ship Tristan Thompson to the Sacramento Kings in the 2021 offseason.

But Dunn was then dealt to the Memphis Grizzlies before the start of the 2021-22 season, who waived him.

After a stint with the Portland Trail Blazers, Dunn latched onto the Jazz and elevated his game to where it is now, with the Connecticut native putting up 5.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game with Utah in a high-use reserve role.

A dogged defender who can move the ball and score a bit with a career-high 40.9% of his treys going in this season, we think a Dunn addition could compliment Payton Pritchard’s offensively-oriented game.

See every angle of this Malik Monk dunk, which was borderline disrespectful to Kris Dunn

Malik Monk was HYPED after throwing this down on Kris Dunn.

Sacramento Kings guard De’Aaron Fox forced a steal and found Malik Monk streaking down the court in transition before dropping a dime.

Monk took the pass from Fox and he immediately took flight to throw down an absolutely vicious dunk on Jazz defender Kris Dunn. It was a highlight so nice, you want to see it twice.

Fortunately, the NBA’s official Twitter account posted every single angle of this slam so that you can watch the mesmerizing feat of athleticism from all perspectives.

Each time you watch a replay of this fantastic dunk from Monk, it becomes more and more impressive:

This was a wonderful first game of the season for the Kings, who defeated the Jazz, 130-114. It was exactly the return to form their offense needed after recording the best offensive rating in the league last season.

Meanwhile, although Dunn was on the wrong end of this poster dunk, he was surprisingly one of the best players in the preseason for the Jazz.

Six Boston Celtics alumni ink new deals with G League teams

No longer seen as the land of outcasts it once was but as more of a viable path into — or back into — the NBA, players are also much better compensated for their play.

A number of former Boston Celtics training camp invitees and other alumni officially found new homes for the season in the NBA’s G League on various different ball clubs within it, per HoopsHype’s Alberto De Roa.

No longer seen as the land of outcasts it once was but as more of a viable path into — or back into — the NBA, players are also much better compensated for their play at the G League level than they once were, adding to the attraction while putting themselves in the developmental pipelines of Association ball clubs in ways playing overseas in Europe, China, or Australia can’t match.

Let’s take a look at who went where.

Boston Celtics make Juancho Hernangomez trade official

The team was able to complete the deal reported on earlier this month once all players became eligible for inclusion.

The Boston Celtics have officially announced the trade for 6-foot-7 Spanish forward Juancho Hernangomez via press release.

The deal, which sent guards Kris Dunn and Carsen Edwards to the Memphis Grizzlies along with a future second-round pick swap, was made clearer with the revelation about the pick involved in the deal bringing the Madrid native to the Celtics. “Hernangómez, 25, holds career averages of 5.7 points on 43.0% shooting (35.1% 3-PT, 69.3% FT), 3.5 rebounds, and 16.4 minutes in 257 games (57 starts) with [the] Denver [Nuggets] and Minnesota [Timberwolves],” notes the release.

“The five-year pro was originally selected by the Nuggets with the 15th overall selection in the 2016 NBA draft.”

Woj: Celtics trade Kris Dunn, Carsen Edwards, 2016 2nd swap for Juancho Hernangomez

The move would have Boston at 15 players for the 2021-22 season.

The Boston Celtics have traded recently acquired point guard Kris Dunn and reserve guard Carsen Edwards and a 2026 pick swap to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for forward Juancho Hernangomez per ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

The move would get the Celtics to the regular season roster limit of 15 players and save the Celtics $612,000 of cap space as they potentially inch towards potentially dodging the tax for a second straight season. The 6-foot-9 swingman is a career 35.1% 3-point shot who struggled a bit from beyond the arc last season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, hitting only 32.7% from 3 while scoring 7.2 points and pulling down 3.9 rebounds per game.

The deal won’t be official until September 15 according to Woj due to rules preventing Dunn from being aggregated in a trade with Edwards.

With 16 guaranteed contracts, a Celtics player needs to go before opening night – but who?

One way or another, the Celtics need to shed a contract before opening night – but whose?

The Boston Celtics are making use of the league’s expanded roster limits in the offseason, which the NBA allows clubs to roster as many as 20 players until the regular season rolls around and roster size shrink to 15. Currently at 16 guaranteed players, the Celtics will need to get at least one player off their books before the 2021-22 season starts in earnest.

But who to move, and how to do it? There are at least five likely subjects on the roster at present, and there are several ways it could come together depending on how other teams view Boston’s players and what the Celtics are willing to do to make a roster spot free up.

Let’s review who might be off the team come opening night, and the more likely ways it could happen for each.

Interesting NBA teams you should add to your League Pass watch list

With the start of the 2020-21 NBA season upon us, there are several teams that look quite a bit different than when we last saw them.

Especially while watching the teams that were good last season, it can be an overwhelming experience to track the year-over-year roster changes for teams that restructured. Of course, most fans are going to pay close attention to the teams that are favored to win the championship.

But as you decide what games to watch if you subscribe to NBA League Pass, you should seriously consider tuning in to these teams that may not have been on your radar last season.
