Intriguing Jackson State WR with ties to Oregon enters transfer portal

Former Jackson State WR with strong ties to the Ducks has entered the transfer portal.

The Oregon Ducks already grabbed a readymade wide receiver from the transfer portal this offseason, but that doesn’t mean they’re done adding players to that position on the roster.

If they do wish to add another pass-catcher to the mix, an intriguing option just became available, with former Jackson State wide receiver Kevin Coleman entering the transfer portal.

Coleman, a former 4-star recruit in the 2022 cycle, was heavily pursued by Oregon and had the Ducks in his final 5 schools and took an official visit to Eugene last November before making a surprise commitment to Jackson State, joining Deion Sanders. Now that Sanders has moved on to Colorado, Coleman is another one of the many former Tigers’ players who is looking for a new school.

Might Dan Lanning and the Ducks choose to pursue Coleman in the portal, trying to convince him to join Alabama WR Traeshon Holden in his transfer to Eugene?

It’s certainly an option.

Full list of commitments made at 2022 All-American Bowl

See all 10 commitments at the All-American Bowl, including Kevin Coleman picking Jackson State, Trevor Etienne going Florida and Hero Kanu choosing Ohio State.

Ten elite players announced their universities of the future at the 2022 All-American Bowl.

Kevin Coleman, Trevor Etienne, Earnest Greene, Davison Igbinosun, Hero Kanu, Rayshon Luke, Daniel Martin, Cyrus Moss, Larry Turner-Gooden and C.J. Williams all committed to schools during the bowl.

The big surprise was Coleman choosing Jackson State, a Historically Black College & University that already had the commitment of Travis Hunter.

Etienne, meanwhile, chose Florida while Williams joined a pair of his high school teammates at USC to play under Lincoln Riley.

The West won the game 33-14, but just as exciting as the action on the field was what took place off. See a list of all 10 commitments below.

Deion Sanders and Jackson State land another blue chip 2022 recruit

Top 50 wide receiver Kevin Coleman committed to Jackson State on Saturday.

Deion Sanders and Jackson State sent shockwaves through the college football landscape during the early signing period, flipping five-star athlete Travis Hunter from Florida State.

Jackson State made headlines once again at Saturday’s All-American Bowl. Four-star St. Mary’s (Mo.) wide receiver Kevin Coleman committed to the Tigers over Florida State, Miami, Oregon and USC, giving Sanders another top 50 class of 2022 signee.

“I really stamped my final decision [Friday],” Coleman said. “Really just talked to my parents, told them the decision I was making was to be different to make my own legacy, to make change.”

Coleman cited Sanders as a major factor in his decision — much like Hunter after his shocking commitment to play for the Hall of Famer.

“Primetime,” Coleman said. “Why not play with the best?”

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Coleman has drawn comparisons to Miami Dolphins rookie wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and will now have the chance to thrive among the HBCU ranks.

“Very quick, sudden prospect who creates a lot of separation with his explosiveness out of his breaks,” 247Sports’ Allen Trieu said in his scouting report of Coleman. “Makes cuts at full speed. Excellent in the open field. Has good timed speed and accelerates quickly. Very good hands and ball skills. Catches the ball comfortably away from his body and in traffic over the middle.”

Report: Oregon’s 5-star OT Kelvin Banks skipped Texas A&M trip, could still visit Texas

Oregon’s 5-star OT commit Kelvin Banks canceled his visit to Texas A&M last week, which feels like a big win for the Ducks.

A week ago, there were a lot of concerns when it came to the Oregon Ducks recruiting trail, especially after a pair of blue-chip wide receivers announced that they were de-committing from the Ducks and choosing new schools to sign with.

On top of that, there was news that Oregon’s 5-star OT commit Kelvin Banks was taking an official visit to Texas A&M, despite remaining solid in his commitment to the Ducks.

[lawrence-related id=11981]

The Oregonian’s Andrew Nemec reports on Wednesday that Banks didn’t end up taking that trip to College Station, which is a nice little win for some understandably troubled Duck fans.

As it turns out, Oregon five-star offensive line pledge Kelvin Banks not only didn’t visit Texas A&M last weekend as planned, he also isn’t sure if he’ll ever take a trip there.

“I didn’t make it,” he told me Tuesday evening. “That’s probably done.”

The Ducks aren’t entirely out of the woods yet, though, as Banks still may visit Texas.

“I might go to Texas, but not for sure yet,” he said.
Oregon fans have the right to be a little bit gun-shy after the loss of both 4-star WR Isaiah Santegna and 4-star WR Nicholas Anderson, but it feels like Banks is pretty solid in the camp of the Ducks. The loss of those two receivers may not end up being a death sentence in the end, either, with Oregon looking more and more likely to sign a pair of blue-chip WRs in the coming months, with Portland 4-star Darrius Clemons leaning heavily towards the Ducks, and 5-star WR Kevin Coleman making a visit to Eugene this weekend and reportedly calling Oregon his “dream school.”
A lot can change on a daily basis in the recruiting world, so none of this is a sure thing, but the mood seems to be leveling out for the Ducks after a tough past week on the recruiting trail.

Pair of 5-star recruits set to visit Eugene for Oregon’s game vs. Washington State

The Oregon Ducks will be hosting some massive recruits against Washington State this week, with a pair of 5-stars coming to Eugene.

It’s not often that the Oregon Ducks have a game inside Autzen Stadium, and Nike co-founder Phil Knight isn’t regarded as the most important person on the sidelines.

That may be a bit of an overstatement, but you could argue that a pair of recruits visiting Oregon’s game against the Washington State Cougars on Saturday night will carry some massive weight, and the program will likely be doing anything they can to make sure they have everything they need.

Both 5-star WR Kevin Coleman and 5-star DL Jayden Wayne announced that they are set to visit Eugene this weekend for the game against the Cougars.

Coleman is ranked as the No. 3 WR prospect in the nation, and he recently called Oregon his “dream school.” Adding Coleman to the 2022 recruiting class would be massive for the Ducks, especially after two blue-chip receivers in Isaiah Sategna and Nicholas Anderson recently flipped their commitments.

Wayne is rated as the No. 29 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to 247 Sports. Standing at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, Wayne would be a huge addition to Oregon’s defensive line in the future, and undoubtedly be one of their biggest “gets” on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class.

After a successful road trip to Seattle a week ago, the Ducks have a lot of momentum as they continue on their path towards the College Football Playoff. Earlier in the week, Mario Cristobal remarked that based on games over the past few years, it is Washington State that may stand as Oregon’s biggest rivals in the conference.

We’ll see if they can show up like they did against the Huskies for this one and put on a show for some of the top recruits in the nation.

Texas among top five schools for five-star WR Kevin Coleman

Even with subpar play on the field this season, Texas is in solid position to land one of the top 2022 recruiting classes in the country.

Should we be worried about Oregon’s pair of de-commitments from 4-star WRs?

Should we be worried about 4-star WRs Isaiah Sategna and Nicholas Anderson flipping? What could it mean about Oregon’s recruiting down the road?

[mm-video type=playlist id=01f27mq9z7hjgk6vc6 player_id=none image=https://duckswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

While the wins keep rolling for the Oregon Ducks on the field, a trio of tough blows on the recruiting front has come over the past week that might cause some unrest in the fanbase, and force questions to be asked.

While the news that 5-star offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia was entering the transfer portal stung last week, more recent developments on the recruiting front might be a bit more concerning. On Monday, 4-star WR Nicholas Anderson announced that he was de-committing from Oregon and flipping to the Oklahoma Sooners, and Wednesday night brought the de-commitment from 4-star WR Isaiah Sategna, who is flipping to his home state Arkansas Razorbacks.

Recruiting prowess has been a hot topic for the Ducks as of late, and with another top-rated class in the Pac-12 taking shape, seeing blue-chip prospects decide to go elsewhere is concerning, to say the least. With the loss of Anderson and Sategna, Oregon’s 2022 recruiting class dropped from No. 7 nationally to No. 8. They still stand at No. 1 in the conference.

[lawrence-related id=11936]

So is there an explanation for it all?

Definitely, and it’s likely an explanation that can be seen as a positive for the Ducks.

First off, you have to look at the young talent on the roster and consider the fact that any recruit coming into the program knows that they will have to be competing with last year’s recruiting class for playing time. At Oregon, that means any WR coming to Eugene next year will be battling with the likes of Troy Franklin, Donte Thornton, Kris Hutson, and Isaiah Brevard, all of whom are considered “blue-chip” prospects (4- or 5-star player). On top of that, there’s always the chance that some additional players stick around for another year in order to improve their NFL draft stock. Might Mycah Pittman or Devon Williams choose to stay for one more year? You can’t rule it out at this point.

So the quick answer is that when you consider the players on the roster, anyone coming in might think twice about how quickly they can get onto the field in their freshman season, choosing to go elsewhere instead. Now also add in the fact that the 2022 recruiting class is not yet finalized, and the Ducks already have 4-star WR Tetairoa McMillan and 3-star WR Stephon Johnson verbally committed. On top of that, Oregon is still targeting multiple WRs to bring in. Specifically, look at 4-star WR Darrius Clemons, and 5-star WR Kevin Coleman.

[lawrence-related id=11917]

Clemons is a 6-foot-3 WR from Westview High School in Portland, Ore. He is a home-state kid who is currently “warm” on Oregon according to 247 Sports, and his Crystal Ball is pointed heavily in the Ducks’ favor.

Coleman, on the other hand, is considered the No. 3 WR in the nation, and he is also reportedly “warm” on Oregon. Of course, Coleman is also “warm” on Florida State, Alabama, Arizona State, and USC. The Crystal Ball has him currently favoring Florida State.

Regardless of whether or not the Ducks end up landing Clemons or Coleman, or both, it’s clear that there is a chance, and that has to factor into the current commit’s decisions. In the case of Anderson and Sategna, it appears they made a business decision and decided to play elsewhere.

So at face value, yes — Oregon losing blue-chip players to other schools is something to worry about, but once you decipher what the actual reasons might be, it’s understandable. None of this is to say that competition is 100% the reason why both prospects flipped their commitment, but logic would lead you to believe it played a part in it all.

Over the next several months, we will find out how solid Oregon’s 2021 class ends up being, and we can judge their recruiting prowess from there. Until then, I don’t think there should be a lot to worry about on that front.

5-star WR Kevin Coleman: USC back in top-5 after promotion of Donte Williams

5-star WR Kevin Coleman scored touchdowns on two punt returns and then explained why Donte Williams’ promotion to USC interim HC makes him higher on the Trojans.

Even with the upheaval in the USC football program following the firing of head coach Clay Helton, there is at least one recruit who is more interested in the program than he was before.

Five-star wide receiver Kevin Coleman announced on Sept. 16 that USC will be his final official visit. He plans to take the trip on Nov. 20.

His relationship with new interim head coach Donte Williams gave him the push to put the Trojans back into consideration.

“As soon as he got the head coaching job, it was a no-brainer,” Coleman said to WeAreSC.com’s Scott Schrader. “I had to put them back in the top-5.”

Williams has been recruiting Coleman since the receiver was a freshman and the coach was part of the Oregon staff. Coleman said that Williams got him an offer at Oregon and got him an offer at USC on Williams’ first day on the Trojans’ staff.

“He always looked out for me, so I had to pay him back,” Coleman said.

He did this interview with Schrader following a game in which he showed an example of why he is the No. 22 player in the 247Sports composite.

On Friday, the senior returned two punts for touchdowns to lead St. Mary’s (Saint Louis, Mo.) to a 54-12 victory.

The first touchdown was a 47-yard return in the second quarter and the second was a 50-yard return in the third quarter, according to STL Today.

“The first one, I had to hit (the hole). It was all or nothing. I had to believe in myself,” Coleman said to STL Today after the game. “My teammates gave me great blocks, so I had to do them a favor and score.”

In February, Coleman said his top eight schools were Alabama, Arizona State, Florida State, Georgia, Oregon, Texas, Penn State and USC. Saying that he added USC “back” into the mix would imply that he has since trimmed the list.

247Sports reports that Coleman is warm on Alabama, Arizona State, Florida State, Oregon, Texas and USC.

Texas Football Recruiting: Evaluating remaining 2022 wide receiver targets

Wide receiver recruiting is exciting to think about for Texas fans right now. Here are the remaining targets at the position.

Wide receiver recruiting is exciting to think about for Texas fans right now. Even from the outside perspective, it is easy to understand why.

Over the past two NFL drafts, Steve Sarkisian is expected to have been the offensive coordinator for four first-round draft picks plus the Heisman Trophy winner in DeVonta Smith. High school recruits will naturally follow that kind of reputation.

Four-star prospects Evan Stewart and Armani Winfield have already cemented their place in Texas’ 2022 recruiting class. The latter gave his commitment in the middle of Alabama‘s national championship performance, while Stewart’s pledge still stands as the biggest win in Sarkisian’s early days as a recruiter in Austin.

Texas is expected to take at least two more wide receivers before the 2022 class is all said and done. Even a fifth could be added if the fit is right. Sarkisian and Andre Coleman want to revitalize the position room, making it one of the best in the country. Hopefully, Casey Thompson/Hudson Card/Maalik Murphy will be thanking them for years to come.

Here is an in-depth look at the remaining targets at wide receiver for the 2022 class.

Texas Football Recruiting: Five-star WR Kevin Coleman announces top schools

Five-star Kevin Coleman has released his top seven schools and Texas made the cut. Alabama and Georgia are the top remaining challengers.

Five-star prospect Kevin Coleman released his top seven schools on Thursday and Texas made the short list. Alabama, Arizona State, Florida State, Georgia, Oregon and Penn State are still in contention for the wide receiver.

Coleman is the No. 3 wide receiver in the country out of the 2022 recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite. He’s listed as the No. 18 overall player and is the top recruit in his home state of Missouri.

Coleman released a top 13 list back in late October. Programs such as Auburn, LSU, Notre Dame and USC are now cut from that list.

With Steve Sarkisian now taking over as the head coach, recruiting at the wide receiver position is expected to take a significant leap. It helps that DeVonta Smith became the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Desmond Howard did it in 1991.

Texas has found itself in favorable positions with some of the top receivers in the country and Coleman is one of the main targets. The Longhorns have not landed a five-star wide receiver (Mike Davis) on 247Sports since 2010.

Armani Winfield’s commitment was the first receiver to lock down their spot in Texas’ 2022 class. With a major quarterback expected to join as well, the top receivers in the country should be flocking to Austin to play under coach Sarkisian.
