Panthers injury update: S Kenny Robinson ruled out vs. Ravens

S Kenny Robinson (knee) is the latest Panthers defensive back to go down with a preseason injury.

Soon after cornerback Keith Taylor sustained an apparent shoulder injury, the Carolina Panthers were forced to deal with yet another health scare from the secondary. This time, it was with safety Kenny Robinson.

Early in the third quarter of Saturday night’s game, Robinson remained on the turf following an assisted tackle of Baltimore Ravens running back Nate McCrary. He was helped off the field and later ruled out.

Robinson was brought to the blue tent upon being aided off and had his knee subsequently wrapped in ice. He joins Taylor and cornerback Troy Pride Jr., who will not return at all in 2021, as defensive backs on the injury list.

4 takeaways from the Panthers’ 21-18 preseason loss to Colts

If you were looking for some excitement from the Carolina Panthers rookies, then you couldn’t have been disappointed this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers (well, some of them, anyway) finally cracked an actual field of play here in 2021. And even in an exhibition matchup with every one of their projected starters not even dressing, there were a handful of developments to shed a light on.

Here are four takeaways from the Panthers’ 21-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Panthers re-sign DE Efe Obada, place CB on injured reserve

Carolina Panthers re-sign DE Efe Obada, place CB Eli Apple on IR.

Efe Obada is back. Just a day after waiving the popular defensive end, the Carolina Panthers have re-signed him to the active 53-man roster. Obada rounds out a relatively strong but young edge rotation.

To make room for Obada, the team placed cornerback Eli Apple on the injured reserve list. Under the new rules, he will be allowed to return to the roster in three weeks. We had projected Apple would start at outside cornerback. With him sidelined, that job will go to either rookie Troy Pride Jr. or Rasul Douglas, who was just picked up off waivers.

The team also announced that they have added fifth-round pick Kenny Robinson and offensive tackle Matt Kaskey to the practice squad, who were both waived along with Obada on Sunday. They still have one spot on the practice squad left, which is expected to be filled by former Rams linebacker Clay Johnston.

The 7 biggest surprises about the Panthers’ initial 2020 roster

Here are the seven biggest surprises about this group.

The Carolina Panthers revealed their initial 53-man roster for the 2020 season yesterday after Saturday’s cut-downs. As is the case every year, it looks a little bit different than we were anticipating.

Here are the seven biggest surprises about this group.

No room for DE Efe Obada

On Sunday morning, Obada tweeted about how grateful he was to make the 53-man roster again. Hours later he was waived, giving Carolina fans another low-key shock at the end of an offseason that seemed to be defined by popular players suddenly and unceremoniously being shown the door. Obada hasn’t played much. However, he has flashed enough to warrant a spot, even winning NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors once. It’s possible the Panthers are hoping Obada he clears waivers so they can add him to their practice squad, which still has a few open spots.

Kenny Robinson, Stantley Thomas-Oliver III share photos in Panthers uniforms

Two Panthers rookies shared photos on Twitter today of themselves in their new blue Carolina uniforms.

Two Panthers rookies shared photos on Twitter today of themselves in their new blue Carolina uniforms.

Here is a look at fifth-round pick Kenny Robinson, a safety who played with Will Grier at West Virginia and then in the XFL in his new profile pic.

In the seventh round, general manager Marty Hurney came back to the secondary again and selected FIU cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver. He shared a tribute to his mother in his post.

Wholesome.

Day 3 picks don’t normally see a lot of playing time their first year in the league. These two may have a chance, though. After losing so many veterans, this secondary will have no choice but to rely on rookies and reclamation projects.

As far as the depth chart goes, Robinson is a natural free safety, so he should be considered the No. 2 option behind Tre Boston there. Thomas-Oliver is likely the No. 4 outside cornerback behind Donte Jackson, Eli Apple and fourth-round pick Troy Pride Jr.

The Panthers may decide to bring in another corner, though. They recently put in a claim for Ryan Lewis, who was awarded to Washington.

PFF: Panthers fifth-round pick Kenny Robinson one of draft’s biggest steals

Panthers fifth-round pick Kenny Robinson named one of the 2020 NFL draft’s biggest steals by Pro Football Focus.

The Carolina Panthers got one of the biggest steals in the 2020 NFL draft when they picked West Virginia safety Kenny Robinson in the fifth round at No. 152 overall, according to Pro Football Focus.

PFF had Robinson ranked as their No. 90 best prospect in the draft, so getting him as late as Carolina did represents great value.

Here’s what they said about Robinson’s game.

“While watching Kenny Robinson at West Virginia and in the XFL, one thing was apparent: he is a playmaker with sharp instincts. He made 14 plays on the ball at West Virginia and added two interceptions in the XFL. His range and angles playing deep safety are just beautiful.”

While Robinson does look best suited to play deep safety, the Panthers just gave Tre Boston a three-year contract extension and that’s a role he thrived in last year.

Figuring out where to play Robinson is a good problem for defensive coordinator Phil Snow to have. Robinson could see snaps at strong safety if the team decides to use their No. 64 overall pick Jeremy Chinn in the slot. We may see a lot of mixing and matching given the versaility of the defensive backs the team picked up.

Panthers No. 152 pick: Scouting report for S Kenny Robinson

Robinson is a pro-ready safety who brings some interesting traits to the team.

The Panthers addressed the secondary yet again and took the first XFL player in the draft, selecting former West Virginia safety Kenny Robinson with the No. 152 pick.

Robinson is a pro-ready safety who brings some interesting traits to the team. Let’s dive into his evaluation a little deeper.

Strengths:

Robinson is a physically imposing safety who stands at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. It is important to note that he did not receive a combine invite because he played professional football in the XFL with the St. Louis Battlehawks.

However, his strong athletic traits clearly show up on his tape. Robinson is essentially a cornerback in a safety’s body, as he has tremendous hip fluidity and very strong footwork. He covers well in both man and zone and has excellent ball skills at the catch point. Robinson is very aggressive – almost too aggressive – in his anticipation of jumping routes and flying to the ball. He also displays a super quick trigger to close on the ball. The best thing about his game is he will be able to play single high, up in the box as a strong safety and even contribute at nickel. Single high will probably be his best projection, though.

Weaknesses:

Robinson has some pop, but is not a great tackler. He needs to get better at wrapping up to be an effective tackler at the next level. He will also need to work on his discipline, as Robinson often shoots for interceptions and big hits too often instead of just playing the ball.

It is also worth noting that Robinson was kicked out of West Virginia for academic fraud. Some coaches completely removed him from their board, but he certainly has a ton of talent.

Fit with the Panthers:

It is a bit questionable why the Panthers picked another safety. However, Robinson is one heck of a value at this point in the draft. He is a Week 1 starter at safety and he can play single high, up in the box, or even at nickel for defensive coordinator Phil Snow. With this pick, it looks like the defense will be mixing it up in their sub packages with Jeremy Chinn at linebacker and Robinson at safety. It also allows them to play more cover 3, as they now have three strong zone coverage safeties on their roster. This means Juston Burris will most likely be transitioning back to outside corner.

Carolina Panthers draft XFL DB Kenny Robinson

The Carolina Panthers dipped into the bankrupt XFL to pick DB Kenny Robinson.

Kenny Robinson will be a unique selection. Barring a return of the XFL, the former West Virginia and St. Louis BattleHawks DB will become the only player from the reincarnated and deflated league to become an NFL draft pick.

The Carolina Panthers selected Robinson in the fifth round Saturday.

The former West Virginia Mountaineer found his way to the fledgling league and did a solid job in the St. Louis secondary.

Robinson wrote a letter to NFL GMs for The Players’ Tribune April 21.

I consider myself a ball hawk. Somebody who knows how to find the football, whether it’s in the air or on the ground. A guy who relies on his preparation — his understanding of defenses and what offenses are trying to do — so he can play fast and free without thinking. Someone who’s not afraid to put a lick on somebody, or get down in the box and make plays at the line of scrimmage.

In five games in the XFL, I had 21 tackles, two picks and a sack.

… And I know the XFL is not the NFL. I know that. But I could tell the difference in the speed of the game the second I stepped on the field in a BattleHawks uniform. There was definitely an adjustment, but I believe I made it pretty easily. And I know the NFL game is even faster than the XFL. And I believe I can make that transition just as easily.

Panthers pick West Virginia S Kenny Robinson at No. 152 overall

The Panthers have selected West Virginia safety Kenny Robinson with the No. 152 overall pick.

The fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft has arrived. The Panthers have selected West Virginia safety Kenny Robinson with the No. 152 overall pick.

Robinson is the latest addition to Carolina’s secondary, joining Southern Illinois’ Jeremy Chinn and Notre Dame’s Troy Pride Jr. on what will be a much different-looking back end of the defense.

Robinson checks in at 6-foot-1 and 202 pounds. He was very productive the last two years in college, totaling seven interceptions, seven pass breakups and two defensive touchdowns. He played in the XFL this season for the St. Louis Battlehawks, posting 21 tackles and two interceptions.

Whereas Chinn projects to replace Eric Reid in the strong safety roll, Robinson is better suited to play the middle of the field, so he will likely serve as free safety Tre Boston’s backup to start.

Landing Robinson this late may be considered a steal. At one point, Pro Football Focus had him projected as a first-round pick.
