Giants officially release Kenny Golladay

The New York Giants have officially released wide receiver Kenny Golladay, saving them $6.7 million against the cap.

Kenny Golladay, who was signed to perhaps the worst free agent contract in the history of the New York Giants two years ago, has been mercifully waived, opening up approximately $6.7 million in available cap space as the team heads into free agency.

The team made the move official as the new league year began on Wednesday afternoon.

In March of 2021, Golladay, who was a former Pro Bower with the Detroit Lions, was inked to an egregious four-year, $72 million deal which he failed miserably trying to live up to.

In two years with Big Blue, Golladay appeared in 26 games, starting 18, and caught 43 of 93 targets for 602 yards and just one touchdown, which came in the 2022 season finale versus the Philadelphia Eagles.

Golladay ultimately fell out of favor with two different regimes and lacked any sort of explosiveness, seemingly due to a hip injury that previous general manager Dave Gettleman deliberately overlooked.

Despite Golladay’s struggles and injuries, he largely remained professional and didn’t make any waves or cause any issues in the locker room.

The highlight of Golladay’s Giants career is a crushing block against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC wildcard playoff game.

Robert Griffin III believes the Rams are an ideal fit for Kenny Golladay

Robert Griffin III thinks the Rams would be the best fit for Kenny Golladay after the Giants release him

The New York Giants are releasing Kenny Golladay after two disappointing seasons with the organization. After that news was reported, Robert Griffin III took to Twitter to say that the Los Angeles Rams would be an ideal fit for Golladay thanks to his previous experience with Matthew Stafford.

Before signing an expensive multi-year deal with the Giants in 2021, Golladay had a couple of productive years with the Lions in 2018 and 2019. Golladay registered 1,063-plus receiving yards in each season and 16 combined touchdowns in those two seasons with Stafford passing him the ball.

In his final year with the Lions in 2020, Golladay was limited to five games due to injuries and he’s since struggled to remain on the field. Even when he’s available now, the Giants made him a healthy scratch most weeks and he finished with only six catches for 81 yards and a touchdown in 2022.

Even though it was fun to watch Golladay early in his career with the Lions, he’s become an oft-injured wideout that will be turning 30 years old during the 2023 season. While the Rams could add depth at the wide receiver position this offseason, they’d be wise to avoid reuniting Stafford and Golladay.

The Giants will release former Lions WR Kenny Golladay

The Giants will release former Lions WR Kenny Golladay after two expensive, disappointing seasons in New York

One of the very first decisions Lions GM Brad Holmes had to make when he took over in Detroit following the 2020 season was what to do with wideout Kenny Golladay.

Holmes made the right decision.

Instead of keeping the big wideout, the Lions let Golladay leave in free agency. Golladay signed with the New York Giants for four years and $72 million. That deal quickly proved to be one of the worst in free agent history.

After two seasons that produced a total of 43 receptions for 602 yards and one TD–on his final catch in 2022–the Giants have decided to end the failed Kenny Golladay experiment. The team will release Golladay on March 15, the first day of the new NFL league year.

Golladay will become a free agent once released. He will still cost the Giants a $4.5 million roster bonus.

It’s a successful bullet dodging by Holmes right off the bat. The Lions used the compensatory draft pick earned for letting Golladay go on safety Kerby Joseph in 2022.

No word on if the Lions will have any interest in bringing back Golladay, who played for the Lions from 2017-2020.

Giants are releasing WR Kenny Golladay

The New York Giants will release wide receiver Kenny Golladay on the first day of the new league year, March 15.

The Kenny Golladay era in East Rutherford will officially come to an end on the first day of the new league year — March 15.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the New York Giants will save $6.7 million against the salary cap by waiting until that date.

Despite the release, Golladay will still earn a $4.5 million cash roster bonus.

The Giants signed Golladay to a four-year, $72 million contract prior to the 2021 season. He was expected to come in and serve as the WR1 for quarterback Daniel Jones, but those plans never came to fruition.

Due to lingering hip issues that plagued him in Detroit, which were overlooked by former general manager Dave Gettleman, and other injuries, Golladay drastically under-performed in New York. He hauled in just 43 receptions for 602 yards and one touchdown in two seasons.

Golladay’s sole touchdown came on the last pass he saw in 2022 — a late score off the arm of backup quarterback Davis Webb.

The Giants could save more money against the cap if they designate Golladay a post-June 1 cut but that would push some dead money into 2024. Multiple reports suggest the Giants haven’t made a final decision on the timing of Golladay’s cut just yet.

Golladay was informed of his pending release on Tuesday morning.

Giants’ Kenny Golladay named a potential cut candidate

Pro Football Focus names New York Giants WR Kenny Golladay a potential cut candidate — a move that seems inevitable at this point.

With free agency and the new league year starting exactly one month from today, NFL teams will begin the painstaking task of trimming the fat off their rosters in preparation for the 2023 season.

Brad Spieberger of Pro Football Focus identified the top candidate for release for each NFL team heading into this process.

For the New York Giants, the choice was an easy one:

Wide receiver Kenny Golladay

Salary Cap Details: $14,700,000 dead money, $6,700,000 cap savings

Golladay’s tenure with the Giants has been an unmitigated disaster to the point where fans sarcastically applauded when he recorded a catch at MetLife Stadium this season, which happened twice in all of 2022. Golladay hardly played all year and logged just six snaps over two playoff games despite a bevy of injuries to the team’s wide receiver group. After two seasons, Golladay will end up earning just under $1 million per reception.

Cutting Golladay is a must for the Giants. There is no way that will carry his $21.4 million cap hit and with Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley heading for free agency, they’ll need every penny they can get.

Purging themselves of Golladay isn’t simply a cut-and-run as there are downstream financial ramifications past this season. The Giants will incur a $6.8 million dead cap hit in 2024 and a $3.8 million hit in 2025.

Other initiatives they will pursue are the reworking of Leonard Williams’ $32.2 million cap hit for this season and Adoree’ Jackson’s $19 million hit. They want to keep both players and Williams has already stated publicly that he’s amenable to a pay cut.
