Oklahoma returned 16 players from its depth chart from Missouri State game for Kansas State

Oklahoma’s depth appears to be in much better shape for their conference opener against Kansas State, returning 16 different players

After trotting out on the field with a depth chart that was missing about 20 different players two weeks ago in the season opener, Oklahoma appears to be in much better shape for their conference opener against Kansas State.

Sixteen players have returned to action this weekend. The only players missing from Saturday’s game unexpectedly are red-shirt senior wide receiver Obi Obialo and true freshman quarterback Kendall Dennis. Obialo was also out during OU’s season opener against Missouri State.

Among the players that are returning this week: running back T.J. Pledger, kicker Gabe Brkic, tackle Anton Harrison, guard Andrew Raym, nose guard Kori Roberson, free safety Justin Broiles.

While OU likely wasn’t exactly rushing guys to get back for this game, it’s certainly a good sign to see some semblance of normalcy from anything these days, even if it’s just a college football depth chart.

OU was never going to make a run at a sixth-straight Big 12 title unless they were at full strength. Well here they are.

Oklahoma to wear black stripe on helmet for Sooners ‘Unity’ game

Oklahoma will be taking the field with a slightly different look on Saturday.

Oklahoma will be taking the field with a slightly different look on Saturday.

For the first time ever, a black stripe will run down the Sooners’ helmets, and a “Unity” decal will be featured on the back of each players lid. The modifications will be made to OU’s Bring the Wood jerseys.

“Proud of this game because this is really something that was born from a lot of our players and other student-athletes, having one game to really celebrate unity,” Riley told the Norman Transcript. “So that was a way for us, something on our jersey, something on a helmet that we won’t always have, that we won’t have any other games, but we felt like was very cool and appropriate.

“And this is one that our players have really been looking forward to, the opportunity to really express how important unity is to us. It’s just kind of a small, kind of a token, kind of an emblem of what this team has kind of been through and something that’s very, very important to us.”

The Sooners will kick off against Kansas State at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Oklahoma’s season started off easily with a 48-0 win over FCS Missouri State. Spencer Rattler had a strong debut, throwing for 290 yards and four touchdowns and Alex Grinch’s defense looked improved after another full offseason.

In Kansas State, OU faces its first real test of the season, and even then, the market has made it clear that this likely won’t be the game where we truly learn who these Sooners are.

Instead, it will likely serve as a much-needed tune-up game before OU goes on the road next weekend for a real test at Iowa State. And with OU-Texas right around the corner, expect Lincoln Riley to spend plenty of time breaking his guys in on Saturday.

Oklahoma owns lopsided history with Kansas State

Oklahoma owns lopsided history with Kansas State

Third-ranked Oklahoma is looking to avoid another disaster against Kansas State this year.

The Sooners take on KSU on Saturday to kick off conference play, hoping to avoid the same result as last year; a Wildcat win.

Despite a 2019 win from Kansas State, the series history doesn’t dare well for the Wildcats.

The Sooners are on the winning end of a lopsided series with the Wildcats, holding 76 wins over the head of KSU’s 20. The series includes four ties.

OU had beaten Kansas State four straight times before the Wildcats took down No. 5 Oklahoma 48-41 in last year’s contest, the biggest setback for coach Lincoln Riley’s 2019 campaign.

The largest margin of victory in the series came in 1942, when OU’s squad beat the Wildcats 76-0. In 1995, Kansas State beat OU 49-10 for their biggest win in the series long history.

OU beat KSU 32 consecutive times from 1937-68. The Wildcats longest win streaks stands at five.

Despite Kansas State’s win in 2019, this year’s squad has struggled already, losing to Arkansas State 35-31 in their first 2020 game.

Oklahoma will kickoff versus the Wildcats at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Big 12 Football: Greg McElroy thinks the American conference is deeper

ESPN analyst and former Alabama quarterback doesn’t think too highly of the Big 12 Conference. He would put the AAC up there with them.

The Texas Longhorns don’t have fond memories of former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy. The last time many saw him on a football field came in the 2009-10 BCS National Championship game. Colt McCoy was injured and McElroy would lead the Crimson Tide to the National Championship. Now McElroy is talking about the Big 12, just not in a very positive manner.

During a telecast, he had some interesting comments about the American Athletic Conference over the Big 12 Conference. The Big 12 has come under criticism following the performances of Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Iowa State and Kansas the last two weeks. While he makes the case about the middle of the pack, it is all about the top of the conference. That is where the group is judged but he thinks there is an argument.

“Tell me the American, right now, isn’t deeper than the Big 12, perhaps,” McElroy said during the UCF/Georgia Tech game. “I think the American — you could make a case, based on the first couple of weeks here out in the 2020 season — it’s early but I’ve been far more impressed with the quality of play at the top right now. Of course, Oklahoma, Texas, they’re excellent. But those next teams, three, four, five — Oklahoma State struggled today, Iowa State lost to Louisiana, we know Kansas State struggled last week against Arkansas State, losing that game.”

One could point out that the Big 12 Conference is an easy target at this point. It is for good reason, as a Power Five conference, you don’t expect that a Group of Five conference to give you so much trouble, but here we are.

Navy 1-1
SMU 2-0
Cincinnati 1-0
Memphis 1-0
Central Florida 1-0
South Florida 1-1
East Carolina 0-0
Houston 0-0
Temple 0-0
Tulsa 0-1
Tulane 1-1

It is really a silly argument to try and make after just three weeks of the season. Sure has the Big 12 Conference looked bad through the first couple weeks of the season? Sure. Given how the season has come together with so many concerns about the health and safety of those involved, many should have known it would be slow going.

Wednesday Big 12 Morning Rush: Another game postponed

In this edition of the Big 12 morning rush, another conference game postponed due to COVID-19. Plus a player gets put on scholarship.

It is now just three days away from the Texas Longhorns season opening game against the UTEP Miners. As of right now, Texas is one of seven Big 12 games that are set to take place. As the team prepares for the game against UTEP, one player got the best news that a walk-on could receive.

Watch Tom Herman deliver scholarship news to a player’s parents

Longhorns linebacker Jett Bush found out that he was going to be placed on scholarship from his dad. Head coach Tom Herman enlisted the help of his parents to deliver the news to the team. Before you watch this video make sure you have tissues nearby, because someone is cutting onions.

Baylor-Louisiana Tech game postponed over COVID-19 outbreak

Following in the footsteps of SMU-TCU and Tulsa-Oklahoma State, the Baylor game has been postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak. The timing of the Hurricane Laura during a pandemic did not help matters. It is unclear if and when this game will be played. Louisiana Tech doesn’t have a vacant spot on Sept. 19 to allow the game to be pushed back one week. Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports was the first to report the news.

Kansas State kickoff time moved to 11:00 am

In light of the Louisiana Tech-Baylor game being postponed, it left a vacancy at 11 am for Fox. The Arkansas State-Kansas State game will now be moved up to take it’s place. It was originally set for 2:30 pm..

Big 12: Exploring Conference, College Football Playoff expansion

Ivan Maisel of ESPN thinks now is the best time for conference expansion. Longhorns Wire explores how to expand the Big 12, playoffs.

Is there a better time than right now to explore the idea of conference expansion? ESPN’s Ivan Maisel doesn’t think so. In a recent post on ESPN Maisel stated now may be the best time to have that conversation. After all it wasn’t that long ago that Nebraska was looking to play football despite the Big Ten’s stance on a postponement of the season.

Hey, here’s a great idea during a pandemic: Let’s have West Virginia fly 1,400 miles to play a Big 12 game at Texas Tech on Oct. 24, but let’s not allow West Virginia to play Pittsburgh. After all, the Panthers, 75 miles away, are in the ACC.

Before the Pac-12 broke the emergency glass on its 2020 season, the conference approved of Colorado flying 1,300 miles to play at Washington but thought it too risky for the Buffaloes to drive 100 miles to play at Colorado State.

And there’s Nebraska, which a decade ago sued for divorce from the Big 12 (née Big Eight), dissolving a marriage consummated in 1928 to grab the money and security and money and money offered by the Big Ten. Last week the Big Ten told Nebraska it couldn’t play football this fall, which went over in the Cornhusker State like, oh, I don’t know, stalk rot.

Maisel brings up a good point about traveling during a pandemic. Teams can’t play those who are reasonably close but yet are expected to fly across the country to participate in a conference game that is deemed safer. For instance any Big 12 team traveling to Morgantown, West Virginia doesn’t seem like the best move. So in the interest of shaking things up, we look at how the Big 12 could expand.

First is the new North Division.
