Top Notre Dame target to visit campus Sunday

The biggest remaining fish in the 2024 pond for Notre Dame. Will he end up in South Bend?

Notre Dame hasn’t had a whole lot of bigger defensive targets in recent years than 2024 defensive lineman [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag], both figuratively and literally.  The five-star defensive tackle from St. Ignatius in Chicago checks in at 6-5, 310 pounds and requires a bulldozer to move.

Scott is one of the top recruits regardless of position in the ’24 class and has been in the news a good amount of late.  Earlier in the month, Scott announced his top-eight schools that included Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, USC, Michigan, Alabama, Miami, and Colorado.  Shortly after he announced he’d be making his commitment to a college program on his birthday, January 31.

To top things off, two-time reigning national champion Georgia offered Scott a scholarship shortly after he announced his commitment date.  Will that matter in regards to where he winds up committing to?

Time will tell but Notre Dame has to still like their chances with the mountain of a young man.  We’re just nine days out from his commitment and according to news broken by Tom Loy of 247Sports on Saturday, Scott will be making a visit to Notre Dame on Sunday.

2024 quarterback commitment [autotag]C.J. Carr[/autotag] has remained vocal on social media about getting Scott to South Bend.

With Scott’s commitment date not shifting following the Georgia offer I’m starting to let myself get excited about it happening, even if Loy already predicted it to earlier this week.

Notre Dame’s biggest 2024 target lands massive offer

Does this impact what might have been a really good feeling just a day ago?

There arguably isn’t a bigger target for Notre Dame in the 2024 recruiting cycle than [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag] of St. Ignatius in Chicago. Scott is big enough to come with his own zip code at 6 feet, 5 inches and 310 pounds, and he has a five-star grade in the 247Sports composite.

Scott recently released is top eight schools and soon after announced he planned to make a commitment on Jan. 31, which happens to be his birthday.  Based on the news Tuesday, one would assume Scott has a lot of thinking to do between now and the end of the month.

Scott had previously listed Notre Dame among his top eight that also included Alabama, USC, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Miami and Colorado. Arguably his biggest offer to date came in on Tuesday, however.

The way Georgia has turned out star talent on the defensive line in recent years you have to think they’ll at least have a shot here, even if they weren’t a part of Scott’s original top eight. If Notre Dame were to ultimately land him, he’d be the highest-rated defensive tackle signee since Eddie Vanderdoes in the 2013 recruiting cycle. Vanderdoes was a star recruit who never played a down for the Irish. He was released from his national letter of intent and transferred to UCLA.

The offer is hardly a surprise as Georgia recruits as well as anyone and develops defensive line talent as well as anyone in recent years. Yesterday, Tom Loy made a crystal ball projection that favored Notre Dame for Scott but if certainly feels like there is a marathon to go in this recruitment, regardless of how soon the star defensive tackle’s commitment date approaches.

Recruiting expert ‘crystal balls’ 8 prospects to Notre Dame

Who will be the next to commit to Notre Dame?

There is no such thing as the off-season when it comes to college football.  Although games won’t be played until late August, plenty is still occurring.  The second signing period for the 2023 recruiting cycle opens in just a couple of weeks, the transfer portal seemingly never lets things sleep, and coaching changes can happen at any time.

Furthermore, recruiting for the 2024 class is all systems go.  Notre Dame started this past weekend by blitzing the locals in Indiana and Chicagoland before hosting a huge recruiting weekend on campus.  Now predictions for who the next Fighting Irish commitments might be are rolling in.

Tom Loy of Irish Illustrated and 247Sports is as respected of recruiting reporter/analyst as there is in Notre Dame football.  He made nine crystal ball predictions for 2024 recruits on Monday (Jan. 16, 2023), eight of which he pegged to Notre Dame.  Here is a little info on those eight Irish targets.

5-star DL Justin Scott announces commitment date; Oregon among finalists

5-star DL Justin Scott, the No. 18 player in the 2024 class, will announce his commitment later this month. The Ducks are in his group of final schools.

One of the top recruits in the 2024 class will be coming off the board in the coming weeks, and the Oregon Ducks are in contention to potentially land him.

5-star defensive lineman Justin Scott released his top 8 schools earlier in the week, and he announced on Friday that he would be making his commitment on January 31. Scott is ranked as the No. 4 DL and No. 18 overall player in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite.

Alongside the Ducks, Scott also has teams like Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, USC, and Notre Dame in his group of final schools. He has yet to take a visit to Eugene, but that could change before now and his commitment date.

College football recruiting: Five-star Justin Scott sets commitment date

Perhaps the biggest target on Notre Dame’s list for 2024 has set a commitment date.

One of the top prospects in the entire 2024 recruiting class has set his commitment date.  Just days after releasing his top eight, five-star defensive lineman Justin Scott appears set to make a commitment.  He’ll be spending his birthday at the end of January making his commitment to a college football program.

Scott is rated as a five-star prospect by 247Sports and the 18th overall player in the class.  The human road block stands at a towering 6-5 and checks in at 310 pounds.  Wherever he ends up choosing to play college football, chances are strong it won’t take long for him to find the field and make an impact.

Notre Dame was named among Scott’s top eight just days ago.  It was a list that was full of college football’s biggest powers in recent years.  The list also included Colorado and Miami.

Stay tuned as we’re under three weeks away from that announcement from the St. Ignatius star.

Friday Night Notes: Florida’s Jaden Rashada drama, Justin Scott’s top 8 schools and more

High School recruiting notebook as 2023 kicks into high gear in the sports world.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

Absolute chaos! That’s been the state of the transfer portal for several weeks now, as college players and high school recruits all over the country explore their options in a brave new world of long overdue compensation for student-athletes. Unfortunately, verifiable details about NIL deals can be hard to come by and reporting on them has presented unprecedented challenges for the industry.

This week the level of intrigue reached a new peak, embodied by the still-unfolding recruitment between one of the top QB prospects in the class of 2023 and the Power 5 school he’s (maybe) committed to.

Jaden Rashada
Andrew Ivins, 247 Sports

Specifically, the ongoing drama between Pittsburg (Calif.) four-star quarterback Jaden Rashada and Florida is about as confusing as recruiting news gets. It’s also a highly-fluid situation. For the complete story of Rashada’s recruitment, we recommend G. Allan Taylor’s thoroughly detailed timeline this morning in an excellent piece for The Athletic.

Here’s the shorter version:

On June 26, Rashada announced his commitment to Miami even though Florida was considered his favorite. Things changed on November 10, when Rashada and the Gator Collective agreed to terms on a $13 million NIL deal to get him to flip. There’s understandably been a great deal of resistance to that figure being accurate, but that’s what Taylor’s source says. In any case, after signing his deal, Rashada officially flipped to Florida.

This is where things got really weird…

On December 7, Eddie Rojas, the CEO of the Gator Collective sent a termination letter regarding the contract. According to The Athletic, there are conflicting reports as to why.

Earlier this week, the Athletic got a report that said Rashada would not be enrolling at Florida. Then on Thursday, Pete Nakos of On3 reported that Rashada requested a release from his letter of intent with Florida. However, Rashada’s father Harlen has refuted that report.

In a statement, Rashada’s father also said they’re in constant talks with Florida but admitted things would get challenging if he’s not enrolled by the end of today, which is the final deadline for students to start the spring semester.

Rashada is ranked No. 7 among quarterbacks and No. 56 overall in his class. For now, the Gators’ class of 2023 is ranked No. 13 in the country.

If there is an update on Rashada’s status later today, we’ll share it here.

College Football Recruiting: Notre Dame blitzing Chicago and Indiana this weekend

Notre Dame is looking to try and keep their local talent home this weekend…

If you spent any time on Twitter on Friday morning and you happen to follow almost any of Notre Dame’s assistant coaches, you were made clearly aware of what their weekend plans entailed.  They’ll be traveling but not all that far as it appears their weekend targets will be of the local variety.

Running backs coach Deland McCullough, safeties coach Chris O’Leary, tight ends coach Gerad Parker, and special teams coordinator Brian Mason were just a few of Marcus Freeman’s assistants to tweet out their plans to go on a recruiting blitz of both Chicago and Indiana (see below).

Earlier this week, five-star defensive tackle [autotag]Justin Scott [/autotag]of Chicago named Notre Dame among his top-eight programs so we assume he’ll get a visit from the staff.

Check back here to see what develops from this in terms of visits, scholarship offers, and heck, it’s unlikely but maybe even a commitment if we’re lucky.

2024 DL Justin Scott lists Alabama as a finalist in his recruitment

2024 defensive lineman Justin Scott released his top-eight schools on Sunday evening. Alabama made the cut to land the elite, Illinois native.

Alabama’s coaching staff has made it clear that they want to land 2024 defensive lineman Justin Scott. The Illinois native listed the Tide as one of his top eight schools on Sunday evening.

Scott was offered by the Tide back in October. He has a monstrous frame at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds. That is arguably the ideal stature to compete early at the next level. Considering that he is currently a junior, he still has time to grow and develop.

Interestingly enough, 247Sports’ Alan Trieu compared Scott to former Alabama defensive lineman Christian Barmore. That is quite the compliment considering Barmore was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. If he is reminiscent of Barmore, they could explain why Alabama is so high on him.

As of right now, the presumed leader to land Scott is Notre Dame at 66.8% likelihood, according to On3’s RPM.

5-star 2024 DL Justin Scott lists Oregon Ducks in top 8

5-star DL Justin Scott, the No. 18 player in the 2024 class, has the Ducks among his final schools at this stage in his recruitment.

The Oregon Ducks are picking up steam in the 2024 recruiting class, landing in the top 8 for one of the best defenders in the nation for next year’s cycle.

5-star defensive lineman Justin Scott, a 6-foot-5, 310-pounder out of Chicago, announced his final 8 schools on Sunday afternoon, keeping the Ducks in the mix with the likes of USC, Notre Dame, Alabama, Ohio State, and others.

Scott is rated as the No. 18 overall player in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite, and the No. 4 DL in the nation.

Scott hasn’t taken a visit to Eugene yet, but we will likely see that change over the coming months as his recruitment ramps up.
