UFC 276 video: Julija Stoliarenko snaps Jessica-Rose Clark’s arm in 42 seconds

Julija Stoliarenko opened the UFC 276 mega-card with a gruesome submission of Jessica-Rose Clark.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Julija Stoliarenko[/autotag] opened the UFC 276 mega-card with a gruesome submission of [autotag]Jessica-Rose Clark[/autotag].

Stoliarenko (10-6-2 MMA, 1-4 UFC) avoided a fifth consecutive octagon defeat Saturday when she secured a nasty armbar that snapped Clark’s (10-8 MMA, 1-4 UFC) arm a mere 42 seconds into the women’s bantamweight bout.

It was the second-fastest submission in divisional history behind Ronda Rousey’s 14-second win over Cat Zingano in 2015, and it was a much-needed one for Stoliarenko.

Check out the replay of the gnarly finish below (via Twitter):

After the win, Stoliarenko told UFC commentator Joe Rogan that she was not aggressive enough with her submissions earlier in her career, so when she isolated Clark’s arm, she twisted until her foe feverishly tapped.

Julija Stoliarenko attributes fainting at UFC on ESPN 21 weigh-ins to mismanaged weight cut

Julija Stoliarenko says it wasn’t a “bad” weight cut that caused her to collapse twice on the scale and explains the difference.

[mm-video type=video id=01f15pv3qzsshvp9v0 playlist_id=01eqvpne7c1q486dvv player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f15pv3qzsshvp9v0/01f15pv3qzsshvp9v0-a5433b7e4c6961dc89a0c2252f20ce80.jpg]

UFC bantamweight [autotag]Julija Stoliarenko[/autotag] said she did not have a “bad” weight cut, but she did mismanage it.

It was a scary scene Friday at UFC on ESPN 21 weigh-ins as Stoliarenko collapsed twice while on the scale. The first time, Soliarenko stumbled backward and crashed to the floor hard, only being held upright by the signage behind her. After roughly two-and-a-half minutes of being tended to, UFC and Nevada Athletic Commission officials allowed her to weigh in again.

Stoliarenko made weight at 135.5 pounds, but she fainted a second time. She was held by an official as she dropped to the floor, and briefly lost consciousness and started convulsing. She regathered her senses moments later and eventually was taken off on a stretcher.

In an Instagram video posted Friday, Stoliarenko explained what she believes was the root cause of her body shutting down.

“The problem wasn’t my weight cut, and actually I want to say it was one of the easiest cuts in my career and weight was dropping too fast,” Stoliarenko said. “The main issue, I think, was that I made weight too early.”

According to Stoliarenko, she was on weight at 5 a.m., four hours before the weigh-ins start time, which was too long for her to be dehydrated.

“I just was too long time on weight,” she said. “As everybody knows, when you cut weight you cannot be on this weight for too long, because you’re already on the limits of your dehydration and so on. That was an issue why it all happened.”

At the time of her video, Stoliarenko (9-4-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) said she was fully recovered and would have been OK to fight, but she understands why her fight with Julia Avila was canceled. Stoliarenko apologized to Avila and said she hopes they can rebook the fight at a later date.

The handling of Julija Stoliarenko’s UFC on ESPN 21 weigh-in was all wrong | Opinion

After collapsing, Julija Stoliarenko never should’ve been allowed back on the scale, but she was – and she fainted again.

[autotag]Julija Stoliarenko[/autotag] entered the weigh-in room Friday morning at the UFC Apex, and everything seemed normal at first.

She walked to the end of the stage, sat down, and took off her pants and shoes. She got up, walked toward the scale, and stepped on. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Twenty seconds later, Stoliarenko was on the floor after she stumbled backwards off the scale and collapsed. The only thing that kept her sitting upright was the backdrop signage behind her. You couldn’t have watched this without gasping. It was that bad.

Somehow, the worst was still to come.

For the next two-and-half minutes, Stoliarenko was tended to by Nevada Athletic Commission and UFC officials. Was her collapse the result of a bad weight cut? Likely, but we don’t know for sure. Regardless, the phrase “protect fighters from themselves” sprang to mind as she was being examined.

Just cancel her fight. Just cancel her fight.

For some reason, they didn’t just cancel her fight. Stoliarenko was permitted to get up off her chair and step back on the scale. She weighed in at 135.5, meaning she hit her mark for her UFC on ESPN 21 bantamweight fight with Julia Avila – as if that mattered.

Seconds later, Stoliarenko fainted again, and her body went limp as she fell. This time she appeared to briefly lose consciousness and convulse before she got her senses back. Frightening stuff, to say the least.

Just watch:

[mm-video type=video id=01f15pv3qzsshvp9v0 playlist_id=01eqvpne7c1q486dvv player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f15pv3qzsshvp9v0/01f15pv3qzsshvp9v0-a5433b7e4c6961dc89a0c2252f20ce80.jpg]

Stoliarenko was taken off on a stretcher, and her fight was eventually canceled.

Now questions must be answered: Why did Stoliarenko step on the scale a second time? Were officials seriously considering that she might still fight after the first collapse? What about fighter safety?

The NAC declined to comment when requested by MMA Junkie’s John Morgan. UFC president Dana White, who regularly speaks with reporters after weigh-ins, didn’t on Friday. And so, we’re just left to wonder.

But that’s not good enough. It can’t be. So often, people in power are unwilling to protect fighters first.

Illegal knee to the head? The referee asks, “Are you good?”

Nasty eye poke? The ringside doctor asks, “Can you see?”

There was hesitation again Friday with Julija Stoliarenko. There shouldn’t have been.

LAS VEGAS – A frightening scene occurred Friday during [autotag]Julija Stoliarenko[/autotag]’s weigh-in for UFC on ESPN 21.

Stoliarenko (9-4-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) collapsed twice off the scale as she tried to make weight for her women’s bantamweight bout with Julia Avila, and as a result was taken out on a stretcher.

Less than 15 minutes into the official weigh-in window at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Stoliarenko got up on stage to take her turn. She first sat down on the ledge of the set to take her shoes, socks and pants off, then walked over toward the scale.

As Stoliarenko stepped on, she stumbled backward and fell on her butt, held up only by the signage behind her. UFC staff and medical personnel immediately rushed to tend to her.

It seemed like Stoliarenko regathered her wits after a few seconds. She got back up and stepped on the scale a second time, officially hitting her mark at 135.5 pounds.

Just moments later, though, Stoliarenko fainted again and fell to the floor. She appeared to briefly lose consciousness and looked dazed afterward as she was crowded by medical staff. A stretcher was brought up to the stage, and Stoliarenko was loaded on and taken out of the room.

The UFC later announced that Stoliarenko’s fight with Avila was canceled. The Nevada Athletic Commission declined a request for comment, per UFC officials.

Avila took to social media and sent positive wishes toward Stoliarenko.

“Speedy recovery fellow Julia,” Avila wrote on Twitter. “Your health comes first, hopefully we see each other at another date. Prayers sister.”
