Jalin Turner: Renato Moicano might be tough at UFC 300, but he won’t be Dan Hooker tough

Jalin Turner needed to snap out of a rough patch a few months ago, and he did so with authority.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] needed to snap out of a rough patch a few months ago, and he did so with authority.

After a pair of heartbreaking back-to-back split decision losses to Mateusz Gamrot and Dan Hooker in 2023 – his first skid in more than seven years and an end to five straight UFC finishes – Turner knocked out Bobby Green for a $50,000 bonus.

Saturday on the prelims at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena for the monumental UFC 300 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) prelims, Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) has another tough ask on his hands: Renato Moicano (18-5-1 MMA, 10-5 UFC).

But because Turner was in the cage with Hooker for one of his split decision setbacks, he said he knows tough opponents – and thinks that will have him more than prepared for Moicano.

“I’m pretty sure there’s other people that I’ve fought that have the same accolades. I don’t know how durable he is,” Turner said at Wednesday’s media day. “Dan Hooker was definitely the toughest fighter I’ve ever fought in my life. I don’t know if Moicano is that durable. I won’t know until I fight him. But body-wise, (Moicano’s) style is kind of similar to Dan a little bit, but not as well-versed in the striking, I would say. We’ll see.”

Renato Moicano vs. Jalin Turner completes lineup for historic UFC 300 event

UFC CEO Dana White promised one more fight was coming for UFC 300, and now it’s official with Renato Moicano vs. Jalin Turner.

UFC CEO Dana White promised one more fight was coming for UFC 300, and now it’s official.

Ranked lightweights [autotag]Renato Moicano[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] will meet in the final addition for the monumental event, which takes place April 13 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with a main card that airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN.

The promotion announced the matchup between Moicano (18-5-1 MMA, 10-5 UFC) and Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) during Saturday’s UFC 299 broadcast.

Moicano, 34, is an honorable mention in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie lightweight rankings and is coming off a largely one-sided decision win over Drew Dober at UFC Fight Night 235 in February in what was his return to competition from a 15-month layoff. The Brazilian is 4-1 in his past five fights, with the lone blemish coming to former UFC champ Rafael dos Anjos.

He’ll look to extend that run against fellow honorable mention Turner, who will attempt to build off a brutal knockout finish of Bobby Green at UFC on ESPN 52 in December. The result snapped Turner’s two-fight losing skid, both of which were split decision results against Dan Hooker and Mateusz Gamrot.

The latest UFC 300 lineup now includes:

  • Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill – for light heavyweight title
  • Zhang Weili vs. Yan Xiaonan – for strawweight title
  • Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway – for BMF title
  • Cody Brundage vs. Bo Nickal
  • Charles Oliveira vs. Arman Tsarukyan
  • Jiri Prochazka vs. Aleksandar Rakic
  • Calvin Kattar vs. Aljamain Sterling
  • Kayla Harrison vs. Holly Holm
  • Diego Lopes vs. Sodiq Yusuff
  • Renato Moicano vs. Jalin Turner
  • Jessica Andrade vs. Marina Rodriguez
  • Bobby Green vs. Jim Miller
  • Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Cody Garbrandt

Video: Who was the biggest non-headlining mover and shaker at UFC on ESPN 52?

Our “Spinning Back Clique” discusses which non-headlining act stole the show at Moody Center in Austin, Texas.

UFC on ESPN 52 was a spectacular event in the Lone Star State.

While lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan closed the show with an emphatic first-round stoppage of Beneil Dariush, there were eight other stoppages on the 12-fight card.

Rising lightweight contender [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] throttled Bobby Green in the first round, welterweight standout [autotag]Sean Brady[/autotag] tapped Kelvin Gastelum, and former champ [autotag]Miesha Tate[/autotag] made a successful return to bantamweight by submitting Julia Avila, among other exciting finishes.

Former flyweight champion [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] made the move to bantamweight, and looked great in a clear unanimous decision win against longtime contender Rob Font.

But which performance was the most impressive of the bunch?

Video: Dissecting Kerry Hatley’s universally derided late stoppage at UFC Austin

Our “Spinning Back Clique” discusses referee Kerry Hatley’s late stoppage in Jalin Turner vs. Bobby Green in Austin, Texas.

Late stoppages are one of the worst things that can happen in MMA.

A referee is tasked with the responsibility of protecting the fighters by recognizing the appropriate time to stop a contest when a competitor is no longer intelligently defending themself. When a referee fails at that duty, a competitor could be seriously hurt due to unnecessary damage.

That’s exactly what happened when referee Kerry Hatley was late to stop the onslaught of offense by [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] on Bobby Green at UFC on ESPN 52.

Turner badly rocked Green on the feet, and then unloaded a number of unanswered strikes on Green as he followed him to the ground. Green was out and facedown on the canvas, still receiving stikes while Hatley watched on.

The stoppage eventually came, but the timing immediately drew criticism. Hatley himself recognized the error while still inside the cage, but the damage was done.

How should Hatley be held accountable for the late stoppage?

Michael Bisping recalls ‘madness’ of watching ref allow Bobby Green to get unnecessarily pummeled at UFC Austin

Michael Bisping was says he was “in shock” by what he saw from referee Kerry Hatley in the Jalin Turner-Bobby Green fight at UFC Austin.

UFC Hall of Famer [autotag]Michael Bisping[/autotag] believes [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] took too much unnecessary damage in his loss to [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag].

Green (31-15-1 MMA, 12-10-1 UFC) was knocked out by Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) in this past Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 52 co-headliner in which where he took plenty of unanswered strikes. Turner floored Green with a one-two combination then had to rain down plenty of follow-up shots before referee Kerry Hatley finally stepped in.

Hatley has taken a lot of heat for letting Green absorb too much damage. Bisping, who was on commentary duty, wants to give Hatley the benefit of the doubt but believes he needed to do a much better job of assessing the fight-ending sequence.

“He is pretty much out, unconscious right there, but of course the referee didn’t stop the fight,” Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “Jalin Turner follows him down, boom, boom, a few more punches, gets on top of him, Bobby Green is face down on the canvas, and Jalin Turner has no choice but to continue to rain down potentially – well very, very bloody traumatic blows. Not potentially, they were heavy punches. They were knockout power punches, one after the other after the other and the whole arena, all of the commentators, everyone around the octagon was in shock.

“The referee, I don’t know his name and he is a good referee, he is OK, but that was madness. That was insane. Bobby Green was unconscious, and he took about nine or 10 unnecessary blows. The commission have got to have a word with that guy. Maybe from his angle he couldn’t quite see it right. Maybe he couldn’t see that Bobby Green was unconscious, but he did go unconscious a couple of times, and some of the punches brought him back around.”

Like fellow commentator Daniel Cormier, Bisping called the stoppage one of the worst he’s ever seen.

“Fighter safety is supposed to be paramount,” Bisping continued. “That was not good. That was an awful stoppage. One of the worst, if not the worst that I can remember in recent memory. It might not be the worst, but from what I can remember and maybe it’s recency bias, that was the worst stoppage I’ve ever seen, man.”

Jalin Turner fires back at Renato Moicano’s ‘corny’ callout: ‘You’re not Conor McGregor’

Jalin Turner slams Renato Moicano for calling him out.

AUSTIN, Texas – [autotag]Jalin Turner[/autotag] has slammed [autotag]Renato Moicano[/autotag] for calling him out.

Turner (14-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) scored a first-round knockout of Bobby Green (31-15-1 MMA, 12-10-1 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 52 co-headliner at Moody Center. Moments after the fight, Moicano posted on social media to issue Turner a challenge.

Hey @danawhite I saw that co main event Renato Moicano vs @JalinTurner let’s keep this fight… first round KO… no injuries… congrats turner see you Feb…. #UFCAustin @ufc.”

Turner wasn’t amused by Moicano’s (17-5-1 MMA, 9-5 UFC) callout.

“That fool’s been calling everybody out,” Turner told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. “It’s all he do – call everybody out. Anybody that wins, he wants to call out. That’s annoying, bro. Stop doing that. I don’t know why these fighters keep doing that. It’s corny, bro. You’re not Conor McGregor. Stop trying to have everybody’s name in your mouth. That’s weird.”

Moicano was referring to a leaked image of the UFC’s “War Room” that showed the promotion’s plans to book Moicano vs. Turner at a Feb. 10 UFC Fight Night event. But after Dan Hooker was forced out of his bout against Green in this past Saturday’s event, Turner received the short-notice call.

Moicano hasn’t competed since submitting Brad Riddell in the first round in November 2022. The 34-year-old has won three of his past four, all by submission.
