UFC Fight Night 201 video: Chad Anheliger floors Jesse Strader for late TKO

Chad Anheliger’s first octagon triumph came in highlight-reel fashion against Jesse Strader at UFC Fight Night 201.

[autotag]Chad Anheliger[/autotag]’s first trip to the octagon paid off with the biggest win of his career against [autotag]Jesse Strader[/autotag] at UFC Fight Night 201.

Anheliger (12-5 MMA, 1-0 UFC) overcame a knockdown in the first round and rallied to drop Strader (5-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) in the third round en route to the TKO finish in the featherweight bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The Canadian landed a brilliant counter-left hand that dropped Strader in the midst of an exchange. Anheliger pounced and threw a flurry of ground strikes that forced referee Herb Dean to stop it at the 3:33 mark of Round 3.

Check out the replay below (via Twitter):

After the fight, Anheliger revealed there was nothing easy about getting his hand raised. He said sickness and injuries plagued his camp, but he was able to get through it all.

“I’m so happy with the win,” Anheliger said in his post-fight interview with Paul Felder. “I did not have a great camp. The last few weeks did not go well at all, but we got through it.”

UFC targets Jesse Strader vs. Chad Anheliger for Feb. 19 event

A bantamweight matchup between Jesse Strader and Chad Anheliger is in the works for February.

A bantamweight matchup between [autotag]Jesse Strader[/autotag] and [autotag]Chad Anheliger[/autotag] is in the works for February.

Strader (5-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) is expected to face Anheliger (11-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 19 in an event that doesn’t yet have a publicly known venue or location. Two people with knowledge of the situation informed MMA Junkie on Thursday that verbal agreements are in place.

Strader fell short in his UFC debut when he was stopped by Montel Jackson in March. Prior to that, the 30-year-old scored back-to-back knockouts under the Combate Americas banner. He was scheduled to face Mana Martinez at UFC on ESPN 29 in August but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Anheliger earned a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series 38 last month after he edged out Muin Gafurov. The Canadian, who holds a win over Season 29 “Ultimate Fighter” finalist Brady Hiestand, cashed in as a betting underdog for his ninth win in a row.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Martinez (8-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) enters with seven wins in his most recent eight fights. His lone loss in the stretch came against Drako Rodriguez on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2020.

Strader (5-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) made his promotional debut in March and was finished in Round 1 with strikes by Montel Jackson. The fight was Strader’s first since August 2019 and snapped a two-fight winning streak.

The UFC continued its busy March run on Saturday with UFC on ESPN 21, which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas with a main card that aired on ESPN following prelims on ESPN2.

[autotag]Derek Brunson[/autotag]’s (22-7 MMA, 13-5 UFC) resurgence as a middleweight contender continued in the main event when he largely dominated [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] (21-6 MMA, 7-3 UFC) en route to a unanimous decision, moving him into a tie for the third most wins in 185-pound history.

For more on the numbers behind Brunson’s win, as well as the rest of the card, check below for 30 post-event facts to come out of UFC on ESPN 21.

UFC on ESPN 21 video: Montel Jackson lives up to odds, TKOs Jesse Strader early

Montel Jackson was pegged as the biggest betting favorite on the UFC on ESPN 21. He showed why in his fight with Jesse Strader.

[autotag]Montel Jackson[/autotag] was pegged as the biggest betting favorite at UFC on ESPN 21. He showed why in his fight with [autotag]Jesse Strader[/autotag].

Jackson (10-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) wasted no time going to work and getting the TKO victory in his bantamweight fight with Strader (5-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

After Jackson scored a knockdown early in the first round, he remained composed and picked his shots until he dropped Strader again. From there, he jumped on top Strader and connected with a couple more that forced referee Keith Peterson to step in at the 1:58 mark of Round 1.

Check out the replay of Jackson’s win below (via Twitter):

For Jackson, the win was a solid way to rebound from his decision loss to Brett Jones in July. It was a disaster for Strader, though. He not only lost in less than two minutes in his UFC debut, but did so after missing weight by 1.5 pounds Friday.

“I feel great,” Jackson told Paul Felder during his post-fight interview. “I’m going to get with my coaches; talk to (Jason) House, my manager; and see what they want next. I’m going to take a traditional week off, then get right back to it.”
