Just days after having to withdraw from her upcoming bout, [autotag]Cheyanne Buys[/autotag] already has her next fight booked.

[autotag]Montserrat Ruiz[/autotag] has been forced out of UFC on ESPN 31 and Buys (6-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will step in to face [autotag]Mallory Martin[/autotag] (7-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on Dec. 4.

A person with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie on Tuesday but asked to remain anonymous because the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. MMA Fighting was first to report the news.

UFC on ESPN 31 takes place Dec. 4 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

After dropping her UFC debut to Ruiz, Dana White’s Contender Series graduate Buys picked up a “Performance of the Night” head kick finish of Gloria de Paula at UFC on ESPN 28 in July. The 26-year-old was scheduled to face Loma Lookboonmee at UFC Fight Night 198 on Saturday, but withdrew due to a positive COVID-19 test.

An Invicta FC and LFA veteran, Martin will look to get back to the win column. After picking up a “Performance of the Night” submission over Hannah Cifers in August 2020, Martin was submitted by Polyana Viana at UFC 258 in February.

The latest UFC on ESPN 31 lineup now includes:

  • Rob Font vs. Jose Aldo

In a women’s strawweight fight between promotional newcomers, [autotag]Cheyanne Buys[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is a big favorite at -350 against [autotag]Montserrat Ruiz[/autotag] (9-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), and she’s got a hefty 12-1 lead in the picks.

Montserrat Ruiz: Cheyanne Buys must accept the fate that was awaiting training partner Emily Ducote

Montserrat Ruiz would have been happy fight anyone that got her in to the UFC, but facing Cheyanne Buys makes it even more special.

[mm-video type=video id=01f113cy5kh7epz0c9 playlist_id=01eqvpne7c1q486dvv player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f113cy5kh7epz0c9/01f113cy5kh7epz0c9-5be48326d803438ae016f26225a86ece.jpg]

LAS VEGAS – Truth be told, [autotag]Montserrat Ruiz[/autotag] would have been happy fight anyone that got her in to the UFC, but the fact that she’s facing [autotag]Cheyanne Buys[/autotag] made it even more special.

“As soon as I heard she was my opponent, I was thinking, ‘You know what, the one that I was reserving for Emily Ducote, she’s going to get it because they’re training together,'” Ruiz told reporters, including MMA Junkie, through an interpreter at a Wednesday media day at the UFC Apex.

Ruiz (9-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and fellow strawweight Buys (5-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) kick off the ESPN-broadcast main card of Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 21 event at the UFC Apex, which airs following prelims on ESPN2.

Ahead of her UFC debut, Ruiz said she’s more excited than nervous and can’t wait to show that she belongs at the sport’s highest level.

“More than fear, I feel anxious to step into the cage and start fighting,” Ruiz said. “Probably at the moment I step into the cage, I’ll start feeling a little nervous, but so far I just feel more anxious to be competing and fighting.”

Hailing from Mexico, Ruiz has been tagged as a potential prospect for quite some time, fighting first in her native country and then traveling to the U.S. to compete twice under the Invicta FC banner. However, her debut for Invicta didn’t go exactly as planned, losing a decision to five-time UFC veteran Danielle Taylor.

[lawrence-related id=596264,596226,596224]

Despite the loss – which remains the lone setback of her career to date – Ruiz earned a call to the UFC after a first-round submission win over Janaisa Morandin this past July.

“I think the loss was one of the best things that could happen in my career because it made me touch the bottom, and I realized how much I want this,” Ruiz said. “I knew that UFC wasn’t that far away, but I knew that I had to work on some things, so that loss wasn’t something really, really bad in my career because I know that everybody has some bad days and bad nights, especially the fighters, so it was one of those for me, but it helped me a lot to improve and to keep focusing on my main goal.”

Prior getting the fight, Ruiz was set to face Emily Ducote at Invicta FC 43 this past November in a bout that was ultimately scrapped. Ducote’s camp included Buys as a primary training partner, tasked with mimicking Ruiz in sparring sessions.

Ruiz said she’s not worried about any added familiarity her opponent may have and is simply expecting a solid scrap.

“I think it’s a perfect matchup,” Ruiz said. “I know she’s a black belt in taekwondo and likes to go forward, but so do I. I like to go forward, I have a wrestling background, and I know this is going to be a good fight and a good war.”

It’s an opportunity to make an immediate impact for “Conejo,” as well. Making a UFC debut on the big stage of ESPN doesn’t happen all that often, and Ruiz believes it’s going to be her time to shine.

“I can’t wait to show what I’ve been waiting for here all this time,” Ruiz said. “I’m so happy to have this opportunity.”

To see the full availability with Ruiz, check out the video above.

Invicta FC 41 results: Montserrat Ruiz submits Janaisa Morandin in first round

After a year and a half away due to injury, Montserrat Ruiz wasted little time getting down to business at Invicta FC 41.

[autotag]Montserrat Ruiz[/autotag] waited 18 months to return from injury, but a win like the one she had Thursday night proved to be well worth the wait.

The Kings MMA competitor from Los Angeles by way of Mexico headlined an Invicta show for the first time and made it count, with an impressive first-round finish of former strawweight title challenger [autotag]Janaisa Morandin[/autotag] in the main event of Invicta FC 41 at the Police Athletic League in Kansas City, Kansas.

“I don’t care what they say, I’m back,” Ruiz said through an interpreter.

Both competitors came out gunslinging. Morandin (10-4) scored with knees in the clinch, but that only seemed to rile Ruiz (9-1) up. She moved forward and backed Morandin to the fence with a flurry of hard-charging power shots, then grabbed a headlock and bulldogged Morandin to the mat.

Ruiz maintained the headlock with her right hand, and isolated Morandin’s arm with her legs while raining punches down with her left hand. Eventually, that led to the opening for Ruiz to squeeze the arm with her legs and earn the key lock tapout from that position at the 3:28 mark.

[lawrence-related id=539667,540098,539653]

Ruiz rebounded from her first career loss with her fifth career finish. Morandin lost her third straight fight, all via finish.

The evening’s co-feature bout turned into a showcase for rising young flyweight [autotag]Erin Blanchfield[/autotag].

The 21-year old out of New York’s Renzo Gracie academy dominated [autotag]Brogan Sanchez[/autotag] in all aspects of the fight en route to a 30-26 across the board unanimous decision victory.

Blanchfield (6-1 MMA) took some time finding her stride in the opening round, but by the time she hit a takedown with about a minute left, she had things well under control. In the second, Blanchfield’s high-level grappling took center stage, as she worked in side control, nearly getting a key lock at one point, and then delivering elbows in the late seconds until the final horn.

Thanks to Invicta’s open scoring system, we knew Blanchfield was up 20-18 on all scorecards entering the final round, but she never took her foot off the gas pedal, earning 10-8 scores after nearly finishing Sanchez (6-2) toward round’s end.

“I do want the finish but she was super tough,” Blanchfield said. “Three-round fights show all your skill sets, striking and grappling and ground and pound, and I think I showed it all off.”

Blanchfield won her third straight fight and is 4-1 in Invicta. Sanchez has dropped two in a row.

Complete Invicta FC 41 results:

  • Montserrat Ruiz def. Janaisa Morandin via submission (key lock) — Round 1, 3:28
  • Erin Blanchfield def. Brogan Sanchez via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-26)
  • Kaitlin Young def. Latoya Walker via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)
  • Caitlin Sammons def. Claire Guthrie via split decision (29-28. 28-29, 29-28)
  • Alexa Culp def. Natalya Speece via submission (rear-naked choke) — Round 2, 3:59

Invicta FC 41 gets date and location; Janaisa Morandin vs. Montserrat Ruiz to headline

Invicta FC will be holding two events this July.

Returning from a pandemic-induced hiatus, Invicta FC has gotten the ball rolling on its upcoming schedule.

The promotion recently announced Invicta FC 40 for July 2 – and now has now finalized Invicta FC 41 for later in the same month.

Invicta FC will be held on Thursday, July 30 in Kansas City, Kan., according to a press release issued by the promotion on Tuesday. The event will stream on UFC Fight Pass.

The event will be held behind closed doors, without fans or media. Fighters will be tested for COVID-19 prior to the event.

In the main event, former Invicta FC strawweight title contender [autotag]Janaisa Morandin[/autotag] returns to action to take on Mexico’s [autotag]Montserrat Ruiz[/autotag].

Morandin (10-3 MMA) looks to snap a two-fight losing skid after finish losses to Virna Jandiroba and Emily Ducote. The 24-year-old strawweight has dropped three of her most recent four fights.

Mexico’s Ruiz (8-1 MMA) hasn’t competed since her promotional debut at Invicta FC 33 in December 2018. On that card, she lost to former UFC fighter Danielle Taylor by unanimous decision.

[lawrence-related id=530743,530881,530862]

The co-headliner features rising flyweight star [autotag]Erin Blanchfield[/autotag] as she’ll look to continue her winning ways against [autotag]Stephanie Geltmacher[/autotag].

Blanchfield (5-1 MMA) aims to keep up her recent success by picking up her third straight victory. Geltmacher (4-1 MMA) looks to get back in the win column after suffering her first career defeat to Victoria Leonardo at Invicta FC 36 in August 2019.

Also on the card, longtime MMA veteran [autotag]Kaitlin Young[/autotag] (10-10 MMA) fights [autotag]Latoya Walker[/autotag] (5-1 MMA); [autotag]Cynthia Arceo[/autotag] (5-2-1 MMA) battles [autotag]Itzel Esquivel[/autotag] (4-2 MMA); [autotag]Caitlin Sammons[/autotag] (2-0 MMA) fights [autotag]Claire Guthrie[/autotag] (1-0 MMA), and [autotag]Natalya Speece[/autotag] (0-0 MMA) takes on [autotag]Alexa Culp[/autotag] (0-0 MMA).

In summary, the current Invicta FC 41 lineup below:

  • Janaisa Morandin vs. Montserrat Ruiz
  • Erin Blanchfield vs. Stephanie Geltmacher
  • Kaitlin Young vs. Latoya Walker
  • Cynthia Arceo vs. Itzel Esquivel
  • Caitlin Sammons vs. Claire Guthrie
  • Natalya Speece vs. Alexa Culp
