Mock draft watch: Draft Wire throws major curveballs to the Lions in its latest 2022 projection

Mock draft watch: Draft Wire throws major curveballs to the Lions in its latest 2022 projection

If you’re looking for a different set of projections than normal for the 2022 NFL draft, the latest offering from Draft Wire is right up your alley. Luke Easterling of Draft Wire throws a big curveball to the Detroit Lions with the No. 2 pick in the latest set of projections leading into Week 18.

After the Jacksonville Jaguars take Michigan EDGE Aidan Hutchinson at No. 1 overall, the Lions don’t go with Kayvon Thibodeaux, Derek Stingley Jr., Kyle Hamilton or any defensive players. The projection here is Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett to Detroit at No. 2 overall.

It’s an interesting thought exercise and does anticipate the seemingly inevitable rise of the quarterbacks in the class,

Start getting comfortable with the idea of Pickett going higher than you might expect. He’s got many of the same traits that sent Joe Burrow flying up the board not too long ago, and a strong predraft process could easily convince a QB-needy team like the Lions that he can have the same kind of impact Burrow is having right now in Cincinnati.

The other Lions first-rounder, currently the No. 30 pick, is also dedicated to fixing the team’s anemic passing attack. Purdue WR David Bell gets the nod with the pick acquired from the Rams in the Matthew Stafford deal. Bell is often projected into the second round but it’s not out of range to see him go in the first.

In the second round, Draft Wire projects Michigan safety Daxton Hill to Detroit. The third round pick doubles up on secondary help with Alabama CB Josh Jobe.

Who will step up for Alabama with Josh Jobe out for the CFP

With Josh Jobe out for the CFP, who will step up and take his spot?

Injuries just continue to pile up for No. 1 Alabama. Yesterday it was announced that starting cornerback Josh Jobe would be missing the College Football Playoffs after undergoing surgery.

Jobe is a veteran player with a ton of experience that could have been vital in Alabama’s quest for another national championship.

Alabama has played its last two contests without Jayln Armour-Davis, the corner who starts opposite Jobe. There hasn’t been any clarification on whether Armour-Davis will be healthy for the CFP or not.

But we know for certain that Jobe is out, so let’s take a look at who could possibly replace him in the secondary.

Kool-Aid Mckinstry

Kool-Aid McKinstry is the obvious choice, but as I mentioned earlier, ever since Armour-Davis has been out, Kool-Aid has received the starts at his spot. Even if Kool-Aid does get the start, it may not be at Jobe’s spot. It could be in Armour-Davis’.

Kyree Jackson

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Jackson is a talented junior college prospect with elite length and athleticism. Standing at 6’3″, 197 pounds, Jackson checks all of the boxes physically. While he hasn’t seen a ton of playing time this season at cornerback, he has flashed his potential on special teams.

If I had to make an educated guess, I would say that both Kool-Aid and Kyree will be starting when Alabama takes on Cincinnati in the semifinals of the College Football Playoffs. It’s probably just a matter of time before an announcement is made about Armour-Davis.

Alabama DB Josh Jobe out for College Football Playoff after undergoing surgery

Josh Jobe will miss Alabama’s College Football Playoff run.

Alabama defensive back Josh Jobe will be out for the entire College Football Playoff after undergoing foot surgery “to repair a foot injury,” according to Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports.

Jobe has been a key member of the Crimson Tide secondary. The senior has had a productive season, recording 38 total tackles, four pass deflections and two interceptions.

Zenitz reports that Alabama may now turn to two stars to fill Jobe’s role: Jalyn Armour-Davis and true freshman Kool-Aid McKinstry.

Alabama will face off against Cincinnati in the 2021 Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31 for the chance to compete for National Championship No. 19.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Crimson Tide as they participate in the College Football Playoffs, and the health of Josh Jobe as he recovers.

5 Tide players who could impact Alabama-Arkansas

These 5 players could play a pivotal role for the Tide as they take on the Arkansas Razorbacks!

Saturday’s contest between Alabama and Arkansas should be a fun matchup of SEC West foes.

Alabama currently sits atop the SEC West standings with a 9-1 overall record (5-1 SEC), while Arkansas is having a much improved second season under Sam Pittman as they are 7-3 overall (3-3 SEC).

Any time two SEC schools clash there will be plenty of talent on each side of the ball. Today we will look at five players who could have a big impact on the contest for the Crimson Tide!

Alabama’s defensive stats heading into the BYE week

Here is a closer look at Alabama’s defensive stats as the Tide heads into the BYE week.

Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide currently sit ranked at No. 3 with a 7-1 overall record and a 4-1 record in the SEC.

Now that the Tide has entered into its BYE week, I thought it was a good time to take a closer look at some of the team and individual stats on both sides of the football.

Today we look at the defensive side of the football!

First …team stats…

WATCH: Josh Jobe baits Will Rogers for an early interception!

After Mississippi State marched into field goal position on its opening drive, the Alabama defense was able to force a third and ten. Josh Jobe baited Will Rogers to come up with a big interception for the Tide.

This is Jobe’s first interception of the season.

The senior Jobe has been a steady part of the Alabama defense for the past two seasons. It is nice to see the corner get his first pick of the season.

Jobe’s pick set up Alabama’s first score of the game.

Seahawks pick Washington State OT Abraham Lucas in 3-round 2022 mock draft

Aside from the rare hit like landing D.K. Metcalf at the end of the second round, the results have for the most part been a wasteland of busts and missed opportunities in the post-Scot McCloughan era.

The Seattle Seahawks haven’t had much luck in the NFL draft over the last several years. Aside from the rare hit like landing D.K. Metcalf at the end of the second round, the results have for the most part been a wasteland of busts and missed opportunities in the post-Scot McCloughan era. Seattle once again won’t have a first-round pick next year. Wherever it falls, that selection will go to the Jets as part of the Jamal Adams trade.

At the moment, that would be the No. 12 overall pick. Fortunately, our friends at Draft Wire have cooked up a three-round 2022 NFL mock draft this week, so the Seahawks are involved.

In the second round of the mock, Seattle gets to work fixing its defense, selecting Alabama cornerback Josh Jobe with the No. 43 overall pick. Jobe (6-foot-1, 192 pounds) certainly has the look of a prototypical Pete Carroll cornerback. He’s posted one interception and 16 pass breakups so far in 31 games under Nick Saban.

With their next pick in the mock (No. 74 overall) the Seahawks take Washington State offensive tackle Abraham Lucas.

Lucas (6-foot-7, 324 pounds) has been starting at right tackle for the Cougars since 2018. In his sophomore year (2019) he was rated as the best pass-blocking OT in the nation and last season he graded out as the fourth-best offensive tackle in the Pac-12 by PFF. This year, he’s played the most pass-blocking snaps without allowing a sack.

Lucas has performed well against good competition, too. Watch Lucas put in some solid work against Oregon EDGE Kayvon Thibodeaux, expected to be the first overall pick next year.

Seattle’s current starting right tackle Brandon Shell will become a free agent next year. If the Seahawks don’t re-sign him, Lucas could make for an upgrade.

Grading Alabama’s defensive position groups at the halfway point

Let’s look at how the Alabama defensive position units have graded out at the halfway point of the season!

Unfortunately, we are already at the halfway point of the college football season. After last week’s loss to Texas A&M, Alabama sits at No. 5 in the country with a 5-1 record.

Since we have made it to the halfway point, it is time to give a midseason grade to each of the position groups. Yesterday we looked at the offensive position groups. Today we will look at the defensive position groups! Let’s get started!

Defensive Line B-

This group has been a little disappointing this season, but they have not been bad by any stretch of the imagination. Only one guy has been a consistent force on the defensive line for Alabama and that is Phidarian Mathis.

Mathis has racked up 3.5 sacks through the halfway point, which is a very solid number for an interior defensive lineman.

Some of the players such as Justin Eboigbe, DJ Dale, Byron Young, and even Tim Smith need to become more consistent players for the Tide.

Outside Linebackers A

Will Anderson has been an absolute animal for the Alabama defense. Anderon has three sacks on the season but is also third in the country in tackles for loss with 11.

Unfortunately, injuries have plagued the outside linebacker position opposite of Anderson. Christopher Allen’s season was cut short in the opener against Miami so Drew Sanders replaced the talented Allen. Then against Ole Miss, Sanders suffered a hand injury and is now week-to-week so to speak.

True freshman Dallas Turner has stepped up in the absence of Sanders and is doing a pretty good job.

The outside linebackers have been the most positive group along the defense this season.

Inside Linebackers C+

The lofty expectations for the Alabama defense heading into the 2021 season had a lot to do with the pair of inside linebackers that Alabama would have in Christian Harris and Henry To’oT’o.

Now that we are at the halfway point, it is safe to say those two players have not lived up to expectations. Now don’t get me wrong, they have flashed how great they can, but they both have also missed tackles and missed assignments. And they are both better than what they played so far.

Let’s see if they can turn this around in the second half of the season.

Cornerbacks B+

This group, much like the outside linebacker group, has really played pretty consistently all season. Josh Jobe has had the occasional penalty, but if we are being honest, in the pass and flag happy world in which college football is played, some penalties are to be expected.

Jalyn Armour-Davis has maybe been the surprise player of the season for the Tide. He is always in position and if he doesn’t make a play on the ball, he brings the receiver down quickly with no yards after the catch.

We have also seen the backups get a start this season in Kool-Aid McKinstry and Marcs Banks and they have proven to be valuable depth at the cornerback position.

Safeties / Stars C+

It is a common theme among the Alabama defense this season, the word inconsistent. Alabama returned plenty of experience in the back end of the defense and for whatever reason, they have simply not performed to their capabilities.

Jordan Battle isn’t an elite safety, he’s just steady. DeMarcco Hellams is constantly caught out of position and displays poor open-field tackling. Then you have Malachi Moore and Brian Branch who have yet to make a splash play from the star position.

The season is only half over, so that means there is plenty of time for each position group to correct its mistakes and get back to the Alabama defensive standard.

Injury update ahead of Alabama-Florida collision

The latest injury update before the SEC clash between Alabama and Florida!

Injuries are a part of the game of football, unfortunately. With that being said, both Alabama and Florida are still relatively healthy overall. But there are a few injury updates that need to be addressed before the two teams collide in Gainesville.

For Florida, it was reported earlier by Gators Wire that quarterback Anthony Richardson’s availability is pending the results of an MRI from earlier Saturday morning.

Richardson’s availability will play a critical role in the outcome of today’s contest between the Tide and the Gators.

It should also be noted that starting linebacker Ventrell Miller is out for the remainder of the season for the Gators with torn biceps.

On Alabama’s end, the Tide is mostly healthy aside from Christopher Allen. Last weekend starting corners Josh Jobe and Jayln Armour-Davis missed the contest against Mercer with injuries. All indications are that both players will be available today.

The biggest question heading into today’s matchup for Alabama is the status of super sophomore Will Anderson. Anderson limped off the field against Mercer early in the second half last week, but according to Coach Saban, Anderson practiced Thursday.

During his weekly radio program on Thursday night, Saban said, “he did more today than he has done all week”.

It hasn’t officially been announced that Anderson will play, but it seems he is very likely to compete today against the Gators.

Nick Saban gives update on several injured defenders

Injury updates on Will Anderson, Josh Jobe, and Jayln Armour-Davis

No. 1 Alabama will travel to Gainseville this weekend to take on No. 9 Florida. The Tide was able to take care of FCS opponent Mercer without several of the key starting defenders this past Saturday, but the Alabama defense will need to be as close to full force as possible before making the trip to face the Gators.

Head coach Nick Saban spoke to the media on Monday and provided the following injury updates.

  • Will Anderson is currently day-to-day, but the staff is more “encouraged” than they were after the game on Saturday.
  • Starting corners Josh Jobe and Jayln Armour-Davis, who missed Saturday’s contest against Mercer, will be back at practice today (Monday) and the staff will see how they progress throughout the week.

Having Anderson, Jobe, and Armour-Davis available for Alabama’s trip to Gainesville will be huge for Pete Golding and the defense.
