Portal News: Quarterback Will Rogers renews his commitment to Washington

Will Rogers won’t leave the Washington Huskies after all.

Following Kalen DeBoer’s departure for Alabama, the Washington Huskies were left with an uncertain quarterback situation. Will Rogers, who ranks second only to Aaron Murray in SEC history for passing yards, had transferred to play for DeBoer and chose to re-enter the transfer portal after the coaching change.

New Huskies coach Jedd Fisch then witnessed four-star quarterback Austin Mack, who was ranked 73rd overall by 247Sports, join Rogers in the portal. Late last week, Mack committed to Alabama, which paved the way for Rogers’ return.

Rogers told ESPN that Fisch’s NFL pedigree sold him. “That’s the plan. Coach Fisch told me today, ‘I want to treat you like a professional football player.’ I told him that’s what I want, and that’s what I’m looking to do.”

With over 13 years of experience in the NFL, Fisch primarily served as an offensive coordinator and quarterback coach. His two most recent coaching positions were with the Rams, where he worked as the assistant offensive coordinator under Sean McVay, and with the Patriots, where he held the role of quarterbacks coach.

Is Will Rogers a perfect fit for Auburn?

On3’s Pete Nakos believes that one season of Will Rogers could benefit the future of Auburn’s quarterback room.

An eventful week in Seattle has led to one of the nation’s top college quarterbacks to return to the transfer portal.

Following the departure of head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama, former Mississippi State quarterback [autotag]Will Rogers[/autotag] has decided to back off his pledge to Washington and has re-entered the transfer portal. Ryan Haley of College Sports Wire lists Auburn as a potential landing spot for Rogers, and Pete Nakos of On3 has similar sentiments.

In a recent interview with On3’s Andy Staples, Nakos mentioned that he has spoken with Rogers since his re-entry into the transfer portal. Rogers tells Nakos that he is open to every option on the table, including a return to Washington.

If he elects not to play for new Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch, could Auburn be the best suitor? Rogers has one season of eligibility remaining, which could benefit Auburn’s quarterback room while true freshman [autotag]Walker White[/autotag] develops Nakos says.

“[Auburn] is going to try to add a quarterback one way or the other.. They’re not going to take a quarterback with like three years of eligibility left. There’s Walker White, the freshman, coming in, who’s really highly-touted and really highly thought of. They want him to be the guy in the years to come.”

In four seasons as the primary starter at Mississippi State, Rogers passed for 12,315 yards and 94 touchdowns while holding a 69.3 completion percentage. Auburn returns three scholarship quarterbacks, including incumbent starter [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], for the 2024 season.

College Sports Wire evaluates USC as a Will Rogers landing spot after Washington flip-flop

It is highly unlikely USC will pursue another starting QB after landing Jayden Maiava to back up Miller Moss.

With Kalen DeBoer going from Washington to Alabama after Nick Saban’s retirement, there are a lot of moves which will soon be made, reshaping the Huskies’ roster.

One player who has re-thought his choice is quarterback Will Rogers, who transferred from Mississippi State and was expected to take over the starting role at Washington. With Michael Penix Jr. going to the NFL, it looked like Rogers would start.

However, after DeBoer went to Alabama, Rogers re-entered the transfer portal. He should have a good number of suitors, and Ryan Haley of College Sports Wire listed USC as an option:

“This would admittedly be a bit of a surprise since Miller Moss and new transfer Jayden Maiava are expected to battle for the USC starting spot, but not a big one. Both of those quarterbacks have multiple years of eligibility remaining and Rogers has just one. Moss has thrown 92 collegiate passes, and Maiava has one year of starting in the Mountain West under his belt. After USC lost five of its last six games in the regular season, head coach Lincoln Riley might want a little more experience as the Trojans make the jump to the Big Ten.”

Sure, USC just landed UNLV transfer and former Georgia commit Jayden Maiava. Miller Moss looked unreal in the Holiday Bowl.

That said, Rogers could bridge the gap for one year. Other teams Haley lists include Auburn, Houston, and Alabama, among others.

Will Rogers re-enters transfer portal, Auburn named a potential landing spot

The former Mississippi State QB transferred to Washington but is on the move again following the departure of head coach Kalen DeBoer.

After Auburn’s loss to Maryland in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl last December, head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] said that the quarterback competition for the 2024 season is “wide open.”

Following the departure of Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama, one of the best quarterbacks in the nation is back on the market.

[autotag]Will Rogers[/autotag], who passed for 12,315 yards in four seasons at Mississippi State, committed to Washington following the 2023 regular season. He was also spotted at the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on the sidelines wearing a Washington jersey. However, Huskies head coach Kalen Deboer fled to Tuscaloosa to become Nick Saban’s replacement at Alabama. Because of this, Rogers has elected to dip back into the transfer portal.

Following the announcement, Ryan Haley of College Sports Wire revealed the top six transfer destinations for Rogers and included Auburn on the list. Haley cites [autotag]Payton Thorn[/autotag]e’s 2023 struggles as a reason for Auburn to pursue the gunslinger.

If Rogers is going to circle back to the south, he’s going to team up with head coach Hugh Freeze in Auburn. The Tigers finished 6-7 last year and finished one play from beating Alabama, but former Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne was not a high point for the offense. Auburn finished with 162.2 yards per game through the air, almost 20 yards behind any other SEC offense, and PFF credited Thorne with the third-most turnover-worthy plays in the conference despite him ranking 11th in total dropbacks. Only Kentucky’s Devin Leary threw more interceptions than Thorne’s 10. Rogers, despite reaching 600 attempts as a sophomore and a junior, has never thrown more than nine interceptions in a single campaign.

As it stands, Rogers is second all-time in SEC career passing yards behind former Georgia star Aaron Murray. If he were to join Auburn’s roster, or any other roster in the SEC, he would have a chance to break Murray’s record of 13,166 yards.

Auburn’s revamped wide receiver room would also benefit from having a quarterback like Rogers, who is known as a great passer. Haley also suggested a possible reunion with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa, but with Jalen Milroe expected to return, Rogers may have a better shot at earning adequate playing time on the Plains in Freeze’s offense.

Quarterback Will Rogers leaves Washington, re-enters transfer portal

Washington loses its 2024 QB right after Kalen DeBoer’s departure.

Former Mississppi State senior quarterback Will Rogers, who had transferred to Washington to join Kalen DeBoer, has dedcided to re-enter the transfer portal.

Rogers first entered his name in the database Nov. 27, transferring from Mississippi State. His coach, Zach Arnett, was fired Nov. 13, and replaced by Oklahoma offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby, which prompted Rogers to enter the portal the first time.

He announced he would transfer to Washington on Dec. 15, and looked as though he would be Kalen DeBoer’s replacement at quarterback for Michael Penix Jr.

Rogers spent four seasons at Mississippi State and played in 43 games. The QB threw for 12,315 yards, 94 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions during his time in Starkville. The QB had his best season in 2021 when he threw for 4,739 yards, 36 TDs, and 9 INTs. Rogers was originally rated as a three-star prospect out of high school, per the 247Sports Composite ranking.

All Washington players now have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal due to DeBoer leaving for Alabama.

Rogers could have USC, Washington State, Tulane, UNLV, Auburn and Alabama in play, but as of now it’s too early to tell.

Washington quarterback Will Rogers re-enters Transfer Portal

Washington veteran quarterback Will Rogers re-enters the NCAA Transfer Portal following Kalen DeBoer’s announcement as the next Alabama head coach.

Washington quarterback Will Rogers entered the NCAA Transfer Portal Friday, according to On3 reporter Pete Nakos.

Rogers’ decision to enter the portal comes on the same day former Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer was officially announced as the successor to Nick Saban as the next head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The veteran quarterback spent his first four seasons with the Mississippi State Bulldogs, where he set several SEC passing records. Rogers holds the conference record for most passing attempts and completions. He’s also second all-time in the SEC in passing yards with 12,315.

He originally entered the transfer portal on Nov. 24 and committed to Washington on Dec. 15.

Rogers played in eight games in the 2023 season. He threw for 1,612 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions on a 60% completion percentage. Despite the down year statistically, Rogers had consecutive seasons with the Bulldogs where he threw more than 30 touchdown passes.

Rogers joins starting cornerbacks Jabbar Muhammed, Mishael Powell and backup quarterback William Haskell as the latest Huskies to enter the portal following the departure of DeBoer.

Most intriguing transfer portal quarterbacks for Ohio State

Who are the most interesting quarterbacks in the transfer portal that fit what Ohio State is looking for?

We’re all watching and waiting on what the Ohio State football team will do with the transfer portal this time around. Before all of that, it makes sense to examine where things stand with the quarterback position.

I want to make sure that it is very clear this list is not the top transfer portal quarterbacks, but the most intriguing. I am also glad I waited to write this piece, despite some of the guys on the list committing to other schools, because we do have a much clearer idea of what this coaching staff is looking for if they were to add a gunslinger in the portal.

Ryan Day didn’t make any insane decisions immediately, because it appears he has a ton of faith in the current quarterback room of Devin Brown and Lincoln Kienholz. There are no doubt some potential recruits the staff is excited about as well. I respect that.

It looks like Day isn’t going to make a move unless the guy is older with starting experience and is a clear and obvious upgrade over what is in the room, but the five quarterbacks below are guys in the portal I thought would be an interesting addition and where things stand.

Iowa opponent favored to land former SEC star in transfer portal

Iowa’s 2024 opponent, Washington, is now the heavy favorite to bring in former Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers.

The 2024 season will bring forth a lot of change for the Big Ten Conference and college football as a whole. It will be the West Coast expansion for the Big Ten, with the addition of Oregon, Washington, USC, and UCLA joining the fold. The unfortunate demise of the Pac-12 has been the Big Ten’s gain, and the West Coast teams are looking to make an impact right away.

Washington has been one of the biggest success stories of the season. Two years ago, the Huskies floundered under former coach Jimmy Lake. Now, they have finished in the top 10 two years in a row. New coach Kalen DeBoer has turned Washington into a national contender, and the undefeated Huskies are headed to the College Football Playoff as the No. 2 seed.

A huge reason for this success has been the fantastic play of quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Since his transfer from Indiana, the Tampa, Fla., native has been a superstar with two consecutive 30-plus touchdown seasons. He’s been one of the driving forces of Washington’s Pac-12 championship-winning season and has been named a Heisman Trophy finalist for his efforts.

Even as they seek national championship glory this year, the Huskies aren’t keen on being a one-year wonder. They don’t want to fade into the background with their move into the Big Ten. They want to become one of the featured players.

With a need at quarterback forming for next season, Kalen DeBoer is looking back into the transfer portal. According to 247Sports national recruiting analyst Chris Hummer, Washington is a “heavy favorite” to earn the services of former Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers.

The heavy favorite for Will Rogers is Washington,” Hummer said, via Transfer Portal Palooza. “He would be an excellent bridge quarterback after Michael Penix Jr. exits the program. He’s a plug-and-play starter and someone who has thrown for a ton of yards during his career. He would be great for that system.”

It’s a pretty beneficial situation for both sides. Washington gains an experienced passer who has put up gaudy numbers in the SEC. His 12,315 career passing yards ranks second-most in SEC history, his 94 career passing touchdowns good for fourth. For Rogers, he gets to bounce back after a rough 2023 season, joining DeBoer and Huskies team with championship aspirations.

If Rogers does transfer to Washington, he will be on the Hawkeyes’ schedule for 2024. Iowa hosts the Huskies on Oct. 12 next season.

A potential quarterback transfer for Notre Dame football is expect to enter the market

Should the Irish pursue this SEC quarterback?

Notre Dame football head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has let it be known that he will be looking for quarterback help via the transfer portal.

At this point not many names have popped up, but one did on Friday afternoon. Mississippi State starting quarterback [autotag]Will Rogers[/autotag] entered the portal, and fits the mold that the Irish are looking for.

Every transfer quarterback Notre Dame has taken has been a graduate transfer, Rogers fits that mold. He’s also put up some extremely impressive stats, throwing for 12,315 yards and 94 touchdowns during his 4 seasons at Mississippi State. Naturally, the Irish and Rogers seem to be a good match, but it remains to be seen if Freeman will pursue.

It’s extremely early into the portal season, but Rogers should be on the Irish’s list of players to pursue.

Mississippi State’s Will Rogers releases statement about entering transfer portal

The Bulldogs quarterback thanked Mississippi State staff, fans, and teammates as he reflected on his time in Starkville.

Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers released a statement through social media on his decision to enter the transfer portal on Monday.

The senior thanked Mississippi State staff, teammates, and fans for their support during his four years in Starkville.

“I will carry my time at MSU forever, no matter where my path may lead,” his statement read.

Rogers also honored the late Mike Leach, his coach for the first few years in Starkville who passed away due to heart complications last December.

“I am thankful to have had the privilege of playing for Coach Leach, a legend and a friend,” Rogers wrote.

The Bulldogs quarterback, who was reported to enter the transfer portal earlier that same day, is second in SEC history with 12,135 career passing yards.
