Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean has been ruled out of Tampa Bay’s Wild Card playoff matchup against the Washington Commanders with a knee injury. The veteran corner appeared to suffer the injury during a tackle attempt on Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

Dean had been covering McLaurin most of the game, surrendering two catches for 52 yards and recording a pass break up according to Pro Football Focus. Dean had missed the Bucs’ regular season finale with injuries to both knees and was questionable coming into Sunday’s matchup.

Dean was spelled by Josh Hayes, who struggled when called to play outside corner when Dean was out in Week 18. The Bucs also have undrafted rookie Tyrek Funderburk, who had similar problems playing outside cornerback this season.

Jamel Dean injury vs. Panthers: Latest news on Bucs CB

The Bucs lose starting cornerback Jamel Dean against the Carolina Panthers with injuries to his knees.

Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean has been ruled out of the Bucs’ Week 17 matchup against the Carolina Panthers with injuries to his knees. Dean was limited in practice when coming into the game, with both knees appearing on the injury report.

Dean has battled injuries all season, spending most of November on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. When he is on the field, Dean is the the Bucs’ most experienced and most consistent cornerback.

Tampa Bay’s secondary overall has been beset by injuries, both throughout the season and coming into today. The Bucs are still without All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and just lost Christian Izien to injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

The Bucs lost their primary reserve cornerback Bryce Hall to a leg injury in Week 1 and have relied on second-year cornerback Josh Hayes and undrafted rookie Tyrek Funderburk. Hayes will likely fill in for Dean, but the Bucs’ pass rush will need to step up its game to prevent Panthers quarterback Bryce Young from exploiting the depleted secondary.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are beaten up and filling their injury report through the first week of the NFL season. The secondary, especially, is digging deep into its depth chart as so many of its members are already down for the count.

On Tuesday, we got an update from the organization when they released they mid-week injury report.

Several names on their from last week include Logan Hall, who missed the Commanders game and was limited in practice with a foot injury. Another notable player on the report is Calijah Kancey, who popped up on the injury report last Friday and missed Sunday’s game, did not practice at all on Wednesday due to an ankle injury.

Getting both players back would be a significant boost for the Bucs’ defense as they face the Lions’ running back duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. The team will already have a tall task against Jared Goff and their passing attack without Josh Hayes and Antoine Winfield Jr.

The Bucs’ only remaining healthy cornerbacks are Jamel Dean, Tykee Smith, and Tavierre Thomas. Rookie Tyrek Funderburk was not activated for this game. Tampa Bay may have to call on Christian Izien, who was their starting nickel corner last year but is listed as a safety this season.

The Bucs defense has played well today against rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Commanders offense. They have been held to just seven points through almost three quarters while the Bucs offense has looked better than ever under new coordinator Liam Coen.
