Here’s why the Cowboys traded with division rival Giants for NT help

The Cowboys still need more help at the nose tackle position and stayed within the division to acquire it. | From @KDDrummondNFL

There’s a hunt in Dallas for more nose tackle help and it’s taken them to interesting corners of the NFL world; their own backyard. Well not literally, but the Cowboys are set to acquire DT Jordan Phillips in a trade with division rival New York, after the Giants signed him earlier in the offseason.

Josina Anderson was the first to report.

Phillips, entering his ninth year in the league, spent his last two seasons with the Buffalo Bills after being a 2015 second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins and spending time there, in Buffalo for a prior stint, and with Arizona.

The 6-foot-6, 341 pounder apparently didn’t impress Brian Daboll and his staff in their first preseason action as he’s making his way to Dallas to see if he can stick in Texas.

The Cowboys will absorb Phillips’ one-year contract worth $1.26 million in base and roster bonus, none of it guaranteed. The compensation going back to New York has not yet been confirmed.

Per ESPN’s Todd Archer, Phillips and a 2026 seventh rounder are coming to Dallas in exchange for the Cowboys’ 2026 sixth rounder. Clearly he was going to be released by the Giants and they probably called Dallas to see if they were willing to swap picks in order to jump to the front of the line for his services.

Phillips once had 9.5 sacks in a season, but that was back in 2019. The hope is that he can be a rotational nose tackle as it seemed clear in Sunday’s preseason opener that while Mazi Smith has shown improvement, he fades the more snaps he sees and at least for now needs to be in a rotation. Yes, even for limited run snaps.

The Cowboys and Giants reportedly pulled off a very rare interdivisional trade, which is hard to process

The Cowboys … and Giants … just pulled off a trade??!??!!

Two NFC East rivals have reportedly just completed a very rare interdivisional trade, which is a very strange thing to type.

Per multiple reports, the New York Giants are sending defensive tackle Jordan Phillips to the Dallas Cowboys for a late-round 2026 pick swap.

On its face, that’s a solid move for Dallas, a team that was thin at the defensive tackle position and needed veteran depth like Phillips on the roster as it tries to make a playoff push in the NFC.

Outside of the strange fact that New York just signed Phillips in the offseason, it’s just not often you see teams that absolutely despise each other like the Giants and Cowboys play nice and help each other out.

New York really did Dallas a solid here, which is something we’re sure that Giants fans don’t want to read. On the other hand, Cowboys fans might not want to tell the Giants “thank you” for sending them an answer at defensive tackle.

You tell me if this is really a win-win with that context.

Giants signing ex-Bills DT Jordan Phillips, per report

The Giants are reportedly signing former Bills DT Jordan Phillips.

The New York Giants are reportedly signing veteran free-agent defensive tackle Jordan Phillips as per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Giants have been in the market for defensive line depth this offseason and many have New York selecting one early on in the upcoming NFL draft.

The Giants do not have much experience behind starters Dexter Lawrence and Rakeem Nunez-Roches. Phillips will join a rotation along with Jordon Riley and D.J. Davidson.

Phillips, 31, is a massive presence on the line at 6-foot-6 and 342 pounds. He began his career as a second-round pick out of Oklahoma by the Miami Dolphins in 2015.

He left Miami for Buffalo in 2019 and had two stints in Orchard Park from 2018-19 and 2022-23. Phillips played for the Arizona Cardinals from 2020-21.

6 under-the-radar free agents Saints could target

6 under-the-radar free agents the New Orleans Saints could target on offense and defense:

The New Orleans Saints will have largely the same roster next year as they did last season, but will need to look around for some role players to replace those that are on the way out.

The Saints likely won’t be in on the big name targets such as defensive linemen Chris Jones, Justin Madubike or Josh Allen but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t options at more available price points.

Last year, they signed players like veteran safeties Jonathan Abram and Ugo Amadi that flew under the radar during free agency, but ended up making a bit of an impact and will likely stick around for another year.

Here are some under-the-radar options in this free agency class at some positions of need:

8 Bills players who could have played their last game with the team

8 #Bills players who could have played their last game with the team:

The 2023 NFL season has concluded as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58.

Unfortunately, the same Chiefs ended the Buffalo Bills’ run to the Big Game a few weeks prior. In that outing, Buffalo lost 27-24 to Kansas City.

As it always goes at this time of the year, changes are en route. Multiple players, even featured ones, might have put on the blue and red for the final time in their careers against the Chiefs… or even some that were injured and unable to play could’ve done so even longer ago.

With that, here are eight Bills players who could have played their final game for the team:

Full list of Bills players who will be free agents this offseason

Who will stay and who will go?

As another season of Buffalo Bills football has come to an end, so have another series of contracts that have been signed.

Whether it be grizzled veterans or players seeing the end of their rookie contracts, there are plenty of faces who will not long be under contract in Buffalo in March when free agency opens.

The Bills have plenty of time until then to sign players to extensions, but it’s never so cut-and-dry. According to Over The Cap, Buffalo is estimated to be $49 million over the 2024 NFL salary cap.

Moves must be made and general manager Brandon Beane will earn his own salary with the decisions ahead.

Bills’ Jordan Phillips hints at possible retirement

#Bills’ Jordan Phillips hints at possible retirement:

Jordan Phillips might have played his final snap with the Buffalo Bills and in the NFL.

Phillips, 31, has had a history of injuries during his career. His season ended in December after he was placed on injured reserve following wrist surgery.

During locker cleanout day, Phillips told reporters including the Buffalo News that he’s considering retiring from football:

Phillips has played 10 NFL seasons. He only played the entire year in three of those. The last time was during the 2019 season, the final year of his first tenure with the Bills. Phillips previously left Buffalo and signed as a free agent with the Arizona Cardinals.

In 14 games in 2023, including nine starts. He totaled 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Phillips signed a new one-year contract with the Bills last offseason and will become a free agent in March without an extension. Bills Wire will bring updates throughout the offseason.
