Giants signing safeties Raheem Layne, Jonathan Sutherland

The New York Giants are signing safeties Raheem Layne and Jonathan Sutherland following Wednesday’s workouts.

The New York Giants are adding free agent safeties Raheem Layne, formerly the Los Angeles Chargers, and Jonathan Sutherland after working out the duo on Wednesday morning.

Patricia Traina of Sports Illustrated was among the first to report on the signings.

The New York Giants, who have the day off from training camp, hosted another workout session for street free agents on Wednesday, a group that included safeties Jonathan Sutherland and Raheem Layne, both of whom signed contracts with the Giants.

Layne, 25, made the Chargers practice squad after going undrafted out of Indiana back in 2022. He was elevated to the active roster during that season playing in six games and another five games in 2023, basically on special teams.

Layne was placed on season-ending IR last October with a torn ACL but has since been cleared by doctors to resume his playing career.

Sutherland signed with the Seahawks as a rookie free agent following the 2023 NFL draft but never appeared in a regular season game for the team. He was released in late July of this year.

The 5-foot-11, 202-pound Sutherland had a solid college career at Penn State, recording 137 tackles, 1.5 sacks, five passes defensed, and one interception.

Earlier this week, the Giants also worked out linebackers Shaun Bradley, K.J. Cloyd, Trey Kiser, and Chapelle Russell with Cloyd ultimately being signed.

Giants working out safeties Jonathan Sutherland, Raheem Layne

The New York Giants will work out safety Jonathan Sutherland on Wednesday in East Rutherford.

The New York Giants are dealing with several injuries at a multitude of positions, so they’ve held numerous player workouts this week.

That trend will continue on Wednesday when they host former Seattle Seahawks safety Jonathan Sutherland in East Rutherford, as reported by NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

NFL draft analyst Lance Zierlein had this to say about Sutherland coming out of PSU:

Sutherland played a hybrid safety/linebacker spot for Penn State, with duties ranging from slot coverage to run fits. He posted impressive numbers at his pro day and has above-average special teams production during his career. While he was asked to handle a versatile role, the tape doesn’t show him shining in any one area. Sutherland will need to find a positional home — possibly as a nickel/dime linebacker — to complement his special teams potential at the next level.

Art Stapleton of USA TODAY reports that former Los Angeles Chargers safety Raheem Layne will also be in for a workout.

Earlier this week, the Giants also worked out linebackers Shaun Bradley, K.J. Cloyd, Trey Kiser, and Chapelle Russell with Cloyd ultimately being signed.

Seahawks 2023 practice squad tracker: DE Hamilcar Rashed signs

Our practice squad tracker is updated.

The Seattle Seahawks lost their second-year outside linebacker Tyreke Smith this week when he was signed by the Arizona Cardinals off their practice squad. The team has just announced that they’ve signed former Oregon State defensive end Hamilcar Rashed to take Smith’s place.

Our practice squad tracker is updated (Dec. 15).

Seahawks reach injury settlements with two safeties

The NFL can be a cutthroat business, especially when it comes to injury.

The NFL can be a cutthroat business, especially when it comes to injury. With limited roster space, injured players on the roster bubble often find themselves looking for new NFL homes. Such is the case for a pair of safeties from the Seattle Seahawks: Joey Blount and undrafted free agent Jonathan Sutherland.

The safety room was crowded in Seattle with players like Quandre Diggs, Julian Love, and the return of Jamal Adams. With the cutting down to the final 53-man roster, the Seahawks moved on from Blount and Sutherland.

Blount played in 11 games for the Seahawks last season, but he did not make much of an impact. In those 11 games the only statistic Blount recorded was one fumble recovery. However, NFL teams are always looking for depth, so I’m sure Blount will land on his feet somewhere else in the league.

4 potential surprise roster cuts for the Seattle Seahawks

Today is probably the least-favorite day on the calendar for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider.

Today is probably the least-favorite day on the calendar for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider. Yesterday they announced seven players have been waived and they’ll need to cut 30 more before tomorrow afternoon to trim their roster down to 53 players.

Here are four potential surprise cuts.

Penn State awards coveted No. 0 jersey to special teams standout

Penn State continues tradition of awarding the No. 0 jersey to special teams standout for 2023 season.

The No. 0 jersey has officially been handed out to a special teams standout at Penn State. It’s a recent tradition of Penn State under [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] for a player on special teams to wear that jersey number.

For three years it was worn by safety [autotag]Jonathan Sutherland[/autotag]. After his graduation, some wondered if the tradition would continue and who would wear the jersey.

Linebacker [autotag]Dominic DeLuca[/autotag] will be the one wearing No. 0 for the 2023 season. The redshirt sophomore has played a huge role on special teams throughout his career. He joined the program as a walk-on in 2021 and redshirted after appearing in three games.

In 2022, DeLuca appeared in all 13 games on special teams and defense, racking up 29 total tackles. He earned the coaching staff’s Special Teams Player of the Week after he blocked a punt in the game.

Franklin and Penn State awarded him a scholarship before the Rose Bowl game against Utah this past season after sharing the team’s Outstanding Run-On Award with [autotag]Tank Smith[/autotag].

It was previously announced that DeLuca would be one of the six captains for the Nittany Lions this season. He’s joined by wide receiver [autotag]Malick Meiga[/autotag] as special teams captains.

The Pennsylvania native has worked his way into a backup linebacker role and will be on the field at that position in certain spots going forward. But his main contributions to the team will be leading the special teams unit that Franklin has put a lot of emphasis on.

The No. 0 jersey tradition lives on for another season with DeLuca wearing the honor.

4 most impressive Seahawks rookies through 2 preseason games

Some of them are doing better than others.

The Seattle Seahawks have only one more preseason game to play before they have to cut their roster down ahead of the regular season. Going into Saturday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, there may be as many as 40 players on the roster bubble, many of them rookies.

Some are already guaranteed roster spots thanks to their position in the NFL draft, but there are a lot of first-years who are battling for a job. Some of them are doing better than others. Here are four rookies for the Seahawks who have stood out the most through two preseason games.

Penn State’s Jonathan Sutherland drafted by CFL team

Penn State linebacker drafted by CFL’s Montreal Alouettes

If you thought we were done with football draft coverage, think again! Days after the conclusion of the 2023 NFL draft, another Penn State player has now been drafted in the CFL draft.

Linebacker [autotag]Jonathan Sutherland[/autotag] was the fifth overall pick of the 2023 CFL draft by the Montreal Alouettes on Tuesday evening. Sutherland, a native of Ottawa, Ontario in Canada, is the second Penn State player to be drafted in the CFL draft in as many years, joining Jesse Luketa in last year’s CFL draft.

Sutherland has signed on as an undrafted free agent with the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL, but that does not block a CFL team from drafting him. This merely gives the Alouettes the CFL rights to Sutherland should he choose to play in the league instead of the NFL for whatever reason. If nothing else, playing in the CFL is a nice fallback option if things do not work out in the NFL as an undrafted free agent.

Seattle Seahawks add two former Penn State players as undrafted free agents

The Seattle Seahawks added these two Penn State special teams standouts as undrafted free agents following the NFL draft.

The Seattle Seahawks passed on Penn State players during the NFL draft, but the franchise still went with a little Nittany Lion flavor in the post-draft undrafted free agent signing frenzy. The Seahawks added long snapper [autotag]Chris Stoll[/autotag] and safety/linebacker [autotag]Jonathan Sutherland[/autotag] as undrafted free agents following the conclusion of the 2023 NFL draft.

One report on the signing of Sutherland referred to him as a special teams ace, which could suggest he may be viewed as a contributor on special teams for the Seahawks in their mind. Of course, Stoll is also one to consider as a special teams ace as last year’s recipient of the Patrick Mannelly Award as the nation’s top long snapper.

Sutherland played multiple positions for the Penn State defense the past couple of seasons by filling a role at safety and helping to fulfill a need at linebacker. Sutherland’s versatility and commitment to doing whatever was needed to help the team led to him being viewed as one of the most respected players in the program. He was a four-time team captain, joining quarterback Sean Clifford in that unique distinction.
