Dolphins host RB J.K. Dobbins ahead of NFL’s draft visit shutdown

Dolphins host RB J.K. Dobbins ahead of NFL’s draft visit shutdown

The NFL has axed any future top-30 visits for 2020 NFL Draft prospects as a precaution to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak across the country. But the Miami Dolphins, to their credit, were able to fast track a few visits right before the buzzer — getting some valuable face time just before the NFL’s mandate on visits was passed down.

One of Miami’s critical visits came yesterday by a running back that has been commonly linked to the Dolphins over the course of the last few weeks: Ohio State’s JK Dobbins.

Dobbins is a 2020 standout and holds a legitimate claim to the title of the top running back in this year’s NFL Draft. Depending on team preference, the pecking order is likely to be some combination of Dobbins, Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor and Georgia’s D’Andre Swift. For Miami, this marks just the latest link between the parties.

The dilemma with drafting Dobbins comes back to positional value for the Dolphins. For a team with so many needs on their roster, would it really be beneficial to add on a running back inside the first three or four selections? A back in the first round would be a hard pill to swallow — not because Dobbins isn’t a blue chip prospect, he is. But rather because the comparable return the Dolphins could get if they were investing the 56th or 70th overall pick to a runner in the backfield.

That is, in part, the beauty of Miami’s upcoming offseason. There’s no shortage of combinations — and only the Dolphins will know what the perfect puzzle look like until the time comes to make the picks. For now, keep an eye on Dobbins, Dolphins fans. Fast-tracking his top-30 meeting in addition to all of the other smoke that exists between Dobbins and Miami is a hard signal to ignore.

8 NFL draft prospects 49ers could target in trade back

The 49ers need to get creative with their use of picks in the 2020 draft.

The 2020 draft will be a new experience for 49ers general manager John Lynch. For the first time since he took over in 2017, the team won’t have a top 10 pick. They pick No. 31, and then they’re off the clock until early in the fifth round. Lynch and the 49ers are slated to go another 108 picks without a selection.

While Lynch has been aggressive moving up in drafts, including a trade up into the back end of the first round to select linebacker Reuben Foster in 2017, it stands to reason they’ll be aggressive in the opposite direction this year.

Scooping up additional draft capital is going to be essential, which likely means a move backward instead of picking 31st overall.

Moving back in the draft doesn’t necessarily mean the 49ers won’t find a quality player with their first selection, especially if their first pick is in the second round. Here are eight players who may be available early on Day 2 of the draft that San Francisco might target.

RB JK Dobbins, Ohio State

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers under head coach Kyle Shanahan have had a lot of success finding running backs late in free agency and in the undrafted free agent pool. With other needs lingering, it’s easy to see them passing on a running back until later in the draft, but a trade back into the middle of the second round where Dobbins falls to them might be too good of a value to pass up. Dobbins was a monster for all three years with the Buckeyes. He racked up 4,459 yards and 38 touchdowns on the ground to go along with 645 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. He also has the athleticism, vision and versatility to be effective in Shanahan’s scheme. Running backs are losing value in the NFL, and the 49ers could take advantage with a very good player falling to them.

Ohio State vs. Clemson Buckeye Battle Cry: What advantage can the Buckeyes exploit?

What one area does Ohio State have over Clemson that it can exploit to win the 2019 Fiesta Bowl? Members of our staff discuss in our BBC.

Okay, it’s almost time for the biggest of the big ones. Ohio State and Clemson are finishing up their preparations for one of the College Football Playoff national semifinals, and doing it all in the desert at the Playstation Fiesta Bowl. And it’s Friday, so it’s time for our weekly roundtable we like to call the Buckeye Battle Cry.

So far there’s been a lot of build up and a lot of talk, but it’s almost time to put the pads on, strap up the helmets and settle it all on the field. Oh but wait. Seems like nobody is giving Ohio State a shot in this one because last time the two met, the Buckeyes got taken behind the woodshed to the tune of a 31-0 drubbing.

But it’s a completely different team on both sidelines so that should mean little in this one. In fact, Ohio State has some advantages over this Clemson team. On that note, we decided to ask our contributors the one thing about this Buckeye squad that could mean all the difference in beating the defending champions and moving on to New Orleans for a national championship.

Have at it Mark.

Todd McShay for some reason has 49ers taking RB in mock draft

The 49ers probably aren’t selecting a running back with their first pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

A running back in the first round seems like a farfetched idea for the 49ers in next year’s draft. Despite evidence that San Francisco wouldn’t go that route, ESPN’s Todd McShay has them selecting Ohio State running back JK Dobbins with the 31st overall pick in his latest mock draft.

McShay joins the Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling in sending a running back to San Francisco in the first round of their mocks. Easterling has Clemson’s Travis Etienne going at that spot.

McShay points to the 49ers’ long-term future at the position as the reason for the pick:

The Niners are No. 2 in the NFL in rushing and have used a plethora of backs to get there. But considering Matt Breida will be a free agent after San Francisco’s playoff bid, Tevin Coleman’s $0 in guaranteed money after this season and the high value Dobbins presents here, I like the idea of bringing in another versatile offensive weapon for Jimmy Garoppolo and padding a strength for this team. But don’t be surprised to see the 49ers trade out of the spot altogether with just six picks in the entire draft and only one before Day 3.

Dobbins could undoubtedly help the 49ers’ offense. He’s a sensational playmaker who’s done nothing but produce for very good Buckeyes teams the last three seasons. Dobbins is an extremely fluid mover who frequently makes defenders miss in space, but his 5-10, 217-pound frame gives him enough size to run them as well.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of his game for the 49ers and head coach Kyle Shanahan is his versatility. Dobbins has 4,285 yards and 37 touchdowns on 707 carries over the last three seasons. He’s averaging over 6.0 yards per attempt. Ohio State also utilizes him a lot as a receiver,  too. The junior running back has 65 receptions for 598 yards and five touchdowns through the air in his three years.

There are a couple things McShay highlights though that run counter to the idea of the 49ers taking a running back with their top pick.

First, if San Francisco does hang on to their first-round pick and they don’t trade back, it’s hard to fathom they use that selection on a running back. They have too many other needs to address to use their only pick in the first four rounds on a running back.

The second thing ties into the first.  Shanahan and running backs coach Bobby Turner have a history of getting top-end production at that position without spending premium draft capital.

San Francisco has four running backs on their roster. Three of them, Breida, Coleman and Raheem Mostert, have rushed for over 500 yards this season. The fourth, Jeff Wilson Jr., has five touchdowns on just 30 touches.

Of that group, Coleman is the only one who got drafted, and he was a third-round pick of the Falcons in 2015 – the year before Shanahan arrived in Atlanta.

While it’s true the 49ers may have a dramatically different group of running backs next season, the idea that they begin replenishing that group with a first-round pick seems counter to everything Shanahan has done in his three years in Santa Clara. In fact, the only draft pick they’ve used on a running back was a fourth-round selection on Utah’s Joe Williams. He never even made the practice squad and was waived after training camp in 2018.

The more likely scenario, in the event that the 49ers part ways with Breida and Coleman, is San Francisco addresses larger needs early in the draft, whether its in the first round or in a trade back. They may add a running back in the later rounds, but that will almost certainly be accompanied by multiple undrafted rookies at that spot. Given what we’ve seen out of Shanahan and the coaching staff – that should do just fine if the 49ers do need to replenish their running back depth.

It’s finally playoff time Buckeye fans! After the committee decided that LSU was more deserving of the No. 1 ranking, Clemson will be waiting in the desert.

This will be the biggest test Ohio State has faced all year. Yes, Clemson has not looked great, played in a weak ACC, and almost lost to North Carolina, but it has something the Buckeye players and coaching staff doesn’t have… playoff experience.

Having experience in these types of situations is huge. But there are also a lot of other factors. When the spotlight is brightest, who will be able to stay composed and make the necessary plays?

Ohio State stars discuss not being No. 1 in the College Football Playoff

Ohio State stars discuss not being No. 1 in the College Football Playoff and having to play Clemson

ATLANTA-

Sunday, it was announced that the undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes would not be the No. 1 seed in this year’s College Football Playoff.

Despite rallying to beat Wisconsin 34-21 in Indianapolis after big-time wins over Penn State and Michigan, the Buckeyes fell behind LSU in the final bracket list and now face No. 3 Clemson.

As impressive as LSU’s resume is right now, many felt Ohio State deserved the top seed in the playoff with its full-season portfolio.

On Wednesday, Buckeyes Wire was able to speak with running back JK Dobbins, defensive end Chase Young and cornerback Jeff Okudah before the Home Depot College Football Awards in Atlanta.

Did being ranked No. 2 put a chip on the players’ shoulders? Was there any added motivation to make a statement to the committee? How about the task of facing the reigning national champions in Phoenix?

Here’s what the first team All-Big Ten cornerback had to say.

“I think it’s really exciting to be number two, it’s really the matchup against Clemson and I’m excited to see how it plays out,” said Okudah.

The junior cornerback projected to go in the first round of the NFL Draft is excited to play the defending champs, as are the rest of the Buckeyes.

“We always want to be a number one seed seed and I feel like we earned it, but we’ve gotta roll with the punches thrown, so we’ll play Clemson and it’ll be a good game.”

How did the most feared defender in college football view the decision?

“We’re just blessed, happy to have the opportunity to be in the College Football Playoff. Regardless if you are one, two, three or four, you’re going to have to play a great team regardless, so we’re just thankful for the opportunity,” said Young.

You’ve heard from two of Ohio State’s best defensive players, but what about JK Dobbins? The junior running back mentioned motivation, but noted the Buckeyes are always out for blood.

“We always have a chip on our shoulder because we always feel like we have something to prove to people, so we’re going to go in with a chip on our shoulder.”

Ohio State will collect a plethora of awards over the next few nights before turning its attention to Clemson and the College Football Playoff. As for now, it’s time to regroup and recharge, then get back on the gridiron.

The Home Depot College Football Awards will air live on ESPN at 7:00 pm Thursday. Make sure to tune in to see your favorite Buckeyes.

Boom! There’s nothing quite like owning your arch rival. The Buckeyes took care of business in impressive fashion with a dominating win over the Wolverines in Ann Arbor this past Saturday.

The regular season is done and now it’s time to focus on bigger prizes, namely a Big Ten Championship and College Football Playoff birth.

The Buckeyes will  face the Badgers of Wisconsin in a rematch of a crossover game from earlier in the season in which Ohio State cruised to a 38-7 victory in less than ideal weather conditions.

Weather won’t be a factor under the cover of Lucas Oil Stadium as Ohio State looks for its third straight Big Ten Championship.

In a season that was supposed to finally be the year for Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines to get over the hump, it’s been more of the same. Unfulfilled expectations.

On the other side, Ohio State was picked as low as fourth in the Big Ten with new coach Ryan Day taking over for Urban Meyer. However, the Bucks have just kept rolling with a high powered offense and a new look defense.

Michigan has been steadily improving as the regular season winds down. This isn’t the same team that squeaked by Army and got trucked by Wisconsin and TTUN would like nothing more than to knock the Buckeyes down a notch and give Harbaugh his first win over Ohio State.

This one is setting up to be an epic battle in the Big House. Throw the records out the window for The Game – it’s officially Michigan week!

Buckeyes uses tough defense, key running plays to lead 14-0 over Penn State at half

Ohio State and Penn State are in a slugfest, with Ohio State leading 14-0 at half thanks to a nasty defense and key rushing plays.

Ohio State looked like it was going to run away with things early on against Penn State, marching 91 yards on the opening drive for a touchdown. After a defensive stop, the Buckeyes drove down the field with ease looking to go up two touchdowns with what looked like a Justin Fields scamper into the end zone. However, after further review, the call was overturned as Fields fumbled before crossing the goal line.

After that the Buckeyes looked a sluggish and didn’t get the offense going again until late in the half, when JK Dobbins scored his second touchdown of the game putting the Bucks up 14-0.

The defense has looked stout thus far keeping the Nittany Lions on their heels, and held Penn State to 64 total yards and only four first downs.

Chase Young was credited with half a sack, which ties him with Vernon Gholston for the single season sack record.

Statistically Ohio State is dominating and feels like the lead should be larger than 14 points, out gaining Penn State by 191 yards.

JK Dobbins is leading the way with 94 rushing yards, while Justin Fields has added 74 of his own. Fields has also thrown for 108 yards on 10 of 14 completions.

Now it’s time to clamp things up in the second half. The history of this game says comebacks are — and almost will — happen.

Watch: J.K. Dobbins pounds it in, putting Ohio State up 7-0

The Ohio State Buckeyes, although they didn’t start off with the ball, were the first to put points on the board, up 7-0 after one drive.

The Ohio State Buckeyes, although they didn’t start off with the ball, were the first to put points on the board, up 7-0 after one drive.

It was all thanks to J.K. Dobbins. After being pinned with their own 20, Justin Fields completed two third-and-longs with his legs to allow Dobbins a chance to leave his mark on the game.

That was after a first play explosive run by Dobbins to get things out to close to midfield.

Dobbins and Fields totaled over 85 combined rushing yards on the Buckeyes opening drive, over 50 of which Dobbins was responsible for. He’s well on his way to making this game a blowout in the fourth quarter.

That said, here’s a video of Dobbins’ touchdown run to kick off the scoring.

If Dobbins is able to crack 100 yards, it’ll be his seventh 100-yard game. He could’ve easily had three digits in all ten had the Buckeyes not been so dominant in just about every outing this season.
