Michigan State football: Where every coach on the old staff is employed now

Tracking where MSU’s former coaching staff has landed:

Michigan State went under a major overhaul, obviously, when they hired Jonathan Smith to take over the Spartan football program. With the new changes to the Spartan football program, came a full overhaul within the MSU coaching staff.

While we know what the new staff looks like, it is time to look at the old staff, and where members of the old staff ended up in their new coaching positions.

Former Michigan State football DB coach gets defensive coordinator job

A former MSU DB coach has accepted a defensive coordinator position at Louisiana

Jim Salgado was a member of the Michigan State coaching staff during the 2023 football season, coming in as a cornerback’s coach. Previous to MSU, Salgado was a longtime assistant with the Buffalo Bills. Salgado joined the Washington Commanders staff following MSU’s season last year.

Now, according to a report from ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, Salgado is being hired as the new defensive coordinator at the University of Louisiana.

Commanders hire veteran assistant for remainder of the season

Ron Rivera adding some help for the secondary for the remainder of the season.

The Washington Commanders fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and secondary coach Brent Vieselmeyer Friday — one day after a 45-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. The loss dropped Washington to 4-8.

Head coach Ron Rivera announced he’d take over Del Rio’s responsibilities as the defensive play-caller. Additionally, Rivera said assistant secondary coach Cristian Garcia would be elevated on an interim basis to replace Vieselmeyer, while senior defensive assistant Richard Rodgers would assist Garcia and help Rivera with game planning.

On Tuesday, the Commanders surprisingly announced an outside hire. Washington hired Jim Salgago for the remainder of the season to help Garcia with the defensive backs. Salgado spent the 2023 season as the cornerbacks coach for Michigan State but had spent the previous six years with the Buffalo Bills.

Rivera spoke about Salgado’s addition on Wednesday.

“Jimmy’s a guy that did internships with us before in the past,” Rivera said. “He’s a coach I’ve known for quite some time, and a couple of times, I’ve tried to hire him. He ended up in Buffalo. He was with [Buffalo Bills Head Coach] Sean [McDermott] and [Former Buffalo Bills Coach] Leslie [Frazier] and that system, which is similar to some of the things that we do. And so, when he was at Michigan State most recently, and when the season was over, the word was they were going to change their head coach, so I reached out to him after the season was over to find out what his status was. He was available, so we got him [and] brought him in. He’s going to come in, he’s going to work with the defensive backs, and he’s just going to finish the year out for us, and then we’ll go from there.”

It’s unusual to see a team bring in a coach from the outside this late in the season, but the move is a short-term one to help the Commanders finish the season.

Former Michigan State defensive backs coach Jim Salgado going to back to NFL with the Washington Commanders.

Now, with the coaching changes in East Lansing, Salgado has officially found his new spot in the NFL, getting a job with the Washington Commanders.

Michigan State football: 2024 DB class appears to be complete

MSU’s DB coach Harlon Barnett and CB coach Jim Salgado did a very good job with MSU’s DB class in 2024:

Michigan State saw some change in their defensive back coaching this offseason, adding Jim Salgado as cornerbacks coach to assist with Harlon Barnett. With that change came a new spark in defensive back recruiting, along with new prospects showing up on the board, and no matter how you look at it, Salgado and Barnett hit a home run this June.

The Spartans were able to secure commitments from 4 defensive backs, while solidifying the commitment of Tennessee 4-star Jaylen Thompson.

Ultimately, it can be said that the defensive backfield recruiting has been outstanding for MSU and the Spartans may be finished with that position group in 2024.

Check out who the five members are, and who could be added as a 6th member:

Reaction: 3 reasons Michigan State football will bounce back from Jamari Howard decommitment

While Jamari Howard’s decommitment was unfortunate, the Spartans are still in a good spot when it comes to DB recruiting in 2024:

Michigan State lost the commitment of Jamari Howard this past weekend. Howard had been committed to the Spartans since September, but has now backed off heading into the summer.

This decommitment comes as little surprise to the fans that heavily follow recruiting, and is something the Spartan coaching staff has expected to come.

Since the staff had a feeling, and saw the writing on the wall, they have prepared themselves for this to happen and thus, Spartan fans should not be concerned about what’s to come next.

Michigan State football announces Jim Salgado as new cornerbacks coach

Michigan State has a named a new Cornerbacks Coach

Michigan State football had an open spot on its coaching staff with the recent departure of pass rush specialist coach Brandon Jordan to the NFL. Mel Tucker filled that spot on Thursday as the program announced the addition of Jim Salgado as the cornerbacks coach.

Harlon Barnett will still coach the defensive backs as a unit, and Salgado will work directly with the cornerbacks, a position group that struggled last year. Salgado comes to the Spartans with great experience. He coached with the Buffalo Bills for the last six seasons on a great defense.
