Michigan State football: Where every coach on the old staff is employed now

Tracking where MSU’s former coaching staff has landed:

Michigan State went under a major overhaul, obviously, when they hired Jonathan Smith to take over the Spartan football program. With the new changes to the Spartan football program, came a full overhaul within the MSU coaching staff.

While we know what the new staff looks like, it is time to look at the old staff, and where members of the old staff ended up in their new coaching positions.

Michigan State football officially retains Courtney Hawkins as WR coach

Courtney Hawkins is being retained as MSU’s WR coach.

Michigan State has officially announced that Courtney Hawkins will be retained onto Jonathan Smith’s staff as the team’s wide receiver coach. Hawkins has been Michigan State’s wide receiver coach since 2020, prior to that, Hawkins was the head coach of Flint Beecher High School from 2006-2019.

Hawkins, a former Spartan player in his own right, has produced two NFL draft picks and has been a solid recruiter during his four years with the program.

Jonathan Smith to reportedly retain Harlon Barnett, Courtney Hawkins on new staff

A pair of Spartan coaches from this past season will be retained by new head coach Jonathan Smith

A pair of staffers from this past year’s staff will reportedly be retained by new Michigan State football head coach Jonathan Smith.

Tim Staudt of WILX is reporting that Michigan State will keep Harlon Barnett and Courtney Hawkins from this past year’s staff. These are the only two that will be retained from previous head coach Mel Tucker’s staff, according to Staudt.

It’s unclear at this time what roles either player will hold on Smith’s new staff.

Barnett served as the Spartans’ defensive backs coach before being promoted to interim head coach after Tucker was suspended and then fired. Hawkins served as the Spartans’ wide receivers coach. Both Barnett and Hawkins played for Michigan State before becoming Spartan coaches.

Report: Michigan State football expected to retain WR coach Courtney Hawkins

Report: Michigan State football expected to retain WR coach Courtney Hawkins

One of the most beloved and respected members of the Michigan State football is reportedly going to hang around with the Jonathan Smith staff. According to a report from SpartanMag.com, Smith will be keeping Hawkins on the staff moving forward.

This makes a lot of sense in multiple ways, and was one of the main moves we said Smith needs to make in our article recently, as Hawkins is a great coach, beloved by the players, and a strong recruiter who knows the Midwest.

Report: Michigan State football 4-star WR Nick Marsh appears to be ‘locked in’

According to a report, MSU’s top rated commit, 4-star WR Nick Marsh is locked in with the Spartans after Jonathan Smith hire

Michigan State landed a home run commitment, not once, but twice earning the pledge from River Rouge (MI) wide receiver Nick Marsh. Marsh is the highest rated recruit in the MSU recruiting class, ranking as a high 4-star at No. 109 in the nation according to 247Sports.

247Sports reporter Corey Robinson spoke to Marsh, and his mom, and is reporting that it appears that Marsh is locked in with Michigan State, liking the hire of Jonathan Smith regardless if WR coach Courtney Hawkins is retained or not:

Report: Michigan State relieves assistant football coaches of their duties

MSU has reportedly fired all of its assistant coaches

Michigan State’s 2023 football season ended last night inside of Ford Field with a historically horrific offensive performance against Penn State, losing 42-0. Now, with the season over, Athletic Director Alan Haller has made the decision to remove the rest of the Spartans coaching staff.

According to a report from Detroit Free Press reporter Chris Solari, all assistant coaches have been relieved of their duties with the university.

One would assume the next Michigan State head coach will assess the staff and bring back who they see fit.

Opinion: Give the keys of the program to Courtney Hawkins and let him lead Michigan State football

Opinion: Give the keys of the program to Courtney Hawkins and let him lead Michigan State football

Editor’s note: This article was written and published before Harlon Barnett was named interim head coach with Mark Dantonio rejoining the program in some capacity.

Mel Tucker is in hot water, and rightfully so, after a USA TODAY report detailed the sexual harassment claims involving Tucker by Brenda Tracy. Tucker’s actions are proving to not only be detrimental and painful for himself, but to Michigan State football’s players, fans and the program itself.

As Lansing State Journal reporter Graham Couch reported, it is likely Mel Tucker has coached his last game at Michigan State. I one-hundred percent agree with his sentiment: Tucker should have coached his last game in the green and white.

What’s next, then?

I would like to suggest giving the title of interim head coach to wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins. Hawkins is the epitome of what the Spartan family is all about, and he is someone who can keep this ship from sinking. Hawkins is loved by players and fans alike.

With a situation like this, there is a fear and a possibility players could check out, try to redshirt or transfer. It’s important to find someone who can bring the program together and keep some stability as it moves into it’s next chapter. Hawkins is someone the team could rally behind.

I believe Hawkins has a chance to not only keep this team going forward this season, but keep this roster together and keep the program on a winning path. He is a coach loved by many on the roster and the recruiting world.

It’s time to give the keys of the program to coach Hawk.

Michigan State football’s trio of young WR show out in week one, buy stock now

Buy stock now: Michigan State’s trio of young wide receivers are ready to step up in 2023

As the dust settles in the first weekend of college football, it is time dissect some of the things we saw. Most recently, Spartan fans are feeling a little down after former WR Keon Coleman had a big first game for Florida State in his debut. While not having Coleman isn’t ideal, it is not something Michigan State football fans should be extremely worried about.

Michigan State recruited a huge haul of wide receivers in the 2022 recruiting class, and with the trio still remaining at the school, having one year under their belt, they are poised to have a big season for Michigan State:

Michigan State offers 2024 4-star WR Koy Beasley

4-star Cincy WR Koy Beasley has gotten an MSU offer

Courtney Hawkins has dipped into Cincinnati to send an offer out to Koy Beasley, a wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound receiver holds offers from Georgia, USC, Minnesota, Purdue and Kentucky, among others. He plays his high school football at La Salle High School in Cincinnati.
