Alabama Baseball players, signees officially sign first MLB contracts of professional career

The 2023 MLB Draft took place during All-Star weekend several weeks ago. A handful of Alabama baseball players and signees were selected and each have now signed their first MLB contract.

The Alabama baseball program was well-represented during the 2023 MLB draft. The Tide had seven players and three signees agree to contract terms with major league organizations.

The team was able to reach Super Regionals in 2023 despite an ongoing NCAA investigation regarding former head coach Brad Bohanon. Interim head coach Jason Jackson helped the players and program create value in a short amount of time.

There were a number of upperclassmen that helped pave the way for the team and it showed in this year’s draft. Most of them were allowed to continue their baseball careers at the professional level.

Roll Tide Wire breaks down each player that signed MLB contracts and the salary each will receive.

Alabama SS Jim Jarvis selected in 11th round by Detroit Tigers

Alabama shortstop Jim Jarvis was drafted at pick No. 320 by the Detroit Tigers. He was one of six Alabama players selected in the 2023 MLB Draft.

It has been a long time coming for Alabama shortstop Jim Jarvis. The California native saw four years worth of hard work pay off on Tuesday as he was drafted at pick No. 320 by the Detroit Tigers.

Jarvis was one of six Alabama players drafted in the 2023 MLB draft. He became the first player since former Alabama starting pitcher Dylan Smith to have been drafted by the Tigers. Smith was drafted in the third round of the 2021 MLB draft.

While Jarvis has one year of eligibility remaining, all signs indicate that he will forgo his final college season and begin his professional career with the Tigers organization.

In four seasons at Alabama, Jarvis held a .262 batting average with 10 home runs and 75 runs batted in. Out of the 196 games that Jarvis played in, he made 193 starts.

While Jarvis was a factor at the plate, he might be better known for his defense. As a senior, Jarvis was honored with an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove. He was the third player in program history to have received the Gold Glove which is the top defensive accolade in college baseball.

Jarvis was a trailblazer for the Crimson Tide in several different ways. It will certainly be tough to replace Jarvis as a leader and as a player.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama baseball program.

Alabama shortsop Jim Jarvis named a finalist for prestigous award

Alabama shortstop Jim Jarvis has been a key piece on defense for the Crimson Tide in each of the last four seasons and is a finalist to receive Rawlings’ Gold Glove Award.

Alabama shortstop Jim Jarvis has been named as a finalist to receive the Rawlings’ Gold Glove Award. The other two finalists are Arizona’s Nik McClaughry and Kentucky’s Grant Smith.

This particular award recognizes the best defensive shortstop in the country. Jarvis has been a solid middle infielder for the Crimson Tide over the last three seasons. The California native has been solid defensively. That is what stands out the most about Jarvis’ game.

In 2023, Jarvis had a fielding percentage of .974. In the 156 attempts that Jarvis had, he had just seven errors. That is a tall ask but Jarvis makes things look effortless on the diamond.

All signs point toward Jarvis heading to the MLB. After spending four seasons in Tuscaloosa, Jarvis will have the choice to return and use his COVID year or pursue professional opportunities. It will be interesting to see what Jarvis decides to do.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama baseball program.
