Alabama Baseball players, signees officially sign first MLB contracts of professional career

The 2023 MLB Draft took place during All-Star weekend several weeks ago. A handful of Alabama baseball players and signees were selected and each have now signed their first MLB contract.

The Alabama baseball program was well-represented during the 2023 MLB draft. The Tide had seven players and three signees agree to contract terms with major league organizations.

The team was able to reach Super Regionals in 2023 despite an ongoing NCAA investigation regarding former head coach Brad Bohanon. Interim head coach Jason Jackson helped the players and program create value in a short amount of time.

There were a number of upperclassmen that helped pave the way for the team and it showed in this year’s draft. Most of them were allowed to continue their baseball careers at the professional level.

Roll Tide Wire breaks down each player that signed MLB contracts and the salary each will receive.

Alabama RHP Garrett McMillan drafted in 14th round by Pittsburgh Pirates

Alabama starting pitcher Garrett McMillan was drafted in the 14th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Day 3 of the 2023 MLB draft.

Alabama right-handed pitcher Garrett McMillan was drafted at pick No. 407 (14th round) by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Day 3 of the 2023 MLB draft. He became the sixth Alabama player drafted and the second player to be drafted by the Pirates. Alabama left-handed pitcher Hunter Furtado was drafted in the sixth round by the Pirates.

McMillan was drafted at pick No. 564 (19th round) by the Minnesota Twins in the 2022 MLB draft. Instead of pursuing the professional path, McMillan elected to return to Alabama for his senior season.

Before the start of his senior season, McMillan suffered a shoulder injury which caused him to miss the first six weeks of the season.

He was a factor on the mound for the Crimson Tide down the stretch, however. The Tuscaloosa native finished the season with a 4-2 record and a 4.89 ERA. Opponents held a .231 batting average against McMillan.

McMillan has the option to return to Tuscaloosa for his final season or go ahead and begin his professional career in the Pirates organization. That is something that Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor in the coming weeks.

Trio of Alabama baseball players enter their names into the 2023 MLB Draft Combine

Alabama baseball players Andrew Pinckney, Grayson Hitt, and Hunter Furtado have entered their names into the 2023 MLB Draft Combine, according to BamaCentral’s Austin Hannon.

According to BamaCentral’s Austin Hannon, three Alabama baseball players have entered their names into the 2023 MLB Draft Combine. Those three players are outfielder Andrew Pinckney, relief pitcher Hunter Furtado, and starting pitcher Grayson Hitt.

This year’s combine will be held from June 20-25 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

Pinckney has been a player that MLB scouts have kept an eye on during his college career. He has a very strong arm, can play multiple positions in the outfield, and is very productive at the plate. As a redshirt-junior, Pinckney had a career-high .341 batting average while hitting 17 home runs and driving in 56 runs.

Hitt figured to be the Game 1 starter for the Crimson Tide in 2023. However, he suffered a season-ending elbow injury that caused him to miss the majority of the season. Before his injury, Hitt had a 3-1 record with a 4.19 ERA (earned run average). Opponents were hitting .206 against the left-hander.

As for Furtado, he was an interesting addition to this list. The Wake Forest transfer pitched 33.1 innings while going 1-1 with a 4.59 ERA. His velocity is impressive as his fastballs sit anywhere from 93-97 mph. However, he struggles to control his off-speed arsenal.

These three can elect to return to Tuscaloosa for next season or could choose to sign a minor-league contract with an MLB organization.
