Alabama Baseball players, signees officially sign first MLB contracts of professional career

The 2023 MLB Draft took place during All-Star weekend several weeks ago. A handful of Alabama baseball players and signees were selected and each have now signed their first MLB contract.

The Alabama baseball program was well-represented during the 2023 MLB draft. The Tide had seven players and three signees agree to contract terms with major league organizations.

The team was able to reach Super Regionals in 2023 despite an ongoing NCAA investigation regarding former head coach Brad Bohanon. Interim head coach Jason Jackson helped the players and program create value in a short amount of time.

There were a number of upperclassmen that helped pave the way for the team and it showed in this year’s draft. Most of them were allowed to continue their baseball careers at the professional level.

Roll Tide Wire breaks down each player that signed MLB contracts and the salary each will receive.

Alabama RHP Garrett McMillan drafted in 14th round by Pittsburgh Pirates

Alabama starting pitcher Garrett McMillan was drafted in the 14th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Day 3 of the 2023 MLB draft.

Alabama right-handed pitcher Garrett McMillan was drafted at pick No. 407 (14th round) by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Day 3 of the 2023 MLB draft. He became the sixth Alabama player drafted and the second player to be drafted by the Pirates. Alabama left-handed pitcher Hunter Furtado was drafted in the sixth round by the Pirates.

McMillan was drafted at pick No. 564 (19th round) by the Minnesota Twins in the 2022 MLB draft. Instead of pursuing the professional path, McMillan elected to return to Alabama for his senior season.

Before the start of his senior season, McMillan suffered a shoulder injury which caused him to miss the first six weeks of the season.

He was a factor on the mound for the Crimson Tide down the stretch, however. The Tuscaloosa native finished the season with a 4-2 record and a 4.89 ERA. Opponents held a .231 batting average against McMillan.

McMillan has the option to return to Tuscaloosa for his final season or go ahead and begin his professional career in the Pirates organization. That is something that Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor in the coming weeks.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama baseball program.

Alabama baseball evens series with Auburn with 4-2 win on Saturday

Alabama baseball gets a huge win on Saturday to even the series with Auburn!

Thanks to a strong five-inning showing from senior pitcher Garrett McMillian, the Alabama baseball team was able to even the three-game series against Auburn, 4-2 on Saturday.

Despite being on a pitch count, McMillian tossed 5.0-plus scoreless innings surrendering just one hit while striking out four batters.

Offensively, Alabama was only able to muster five hits on the night but thanks to eight walks and three hit-by-pitch, the Tide was able to outscore the Tigers.

Alabama and Auburn will play for the series on Sunday. Alabama will send right-hander Jacob McNairy to the hill with Auburn calling on Christian Herberholz, also a righty. Fans can catch the series finale live on SEC Network+.

Alabama pitcher Garrett McMillan to miss season-opener with injury

Alabama’s ace on the mound last season was right-handed pitcher Garrett McMillan. The Tuscaloosa native elected to return to Alabama for his senior season instead of declaring for the MLB Draft.

The Alabama baseball team is gearing up for the season opener against Richmond on Friday. The Crimson Tide will be without the program’s Game 1 starter last season, Garrett McMillan.

BamaCentral’s Joey Blackwell reported that McMillan will be out with a muscle strain. Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon pointed out that McMillan should be back at some point but did not give a timetable for his return.

Last season, McMillan went 4-5 while attaining a 4.29 ERA. He led the way on the mound in each of Alabama’s conference openers.

Left-handed pitcher Grayson Hitt will start Game 1 with Ben Hess starting in Game 2. Super-senior Jacob McNairy will pitch in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama baseball program.

Alabama pitcher Garrett McMillan selected in Round 19 by Twins

Alabama pitcher Garrett McMillan was selected in the 19th round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins.

Alabama pitcher Garrett McMillan saw several of his teammates’ names get called before hearing his own. On Tuesday, the Minnesota Twins chose McMillan with the No. 564 overall pick in Round 19 of the 2022 MLB draft.

After being signed as a two-way player out of Shelton State Community College, head coach Brad Bohannon called on McMillan to be the game-one starter for the Tide this past season. He had a 4-5 record in 86 innings pitched while holding a 4.29 ERA. He provided great leadership and effort for the Tide and almost helped them reach the post-season.

This season he will look to improve on the mound with hopes to upgrade his draft stock for next year. Throughout the summer, McMillan has been playing in the Valley Baseball League for the Strasburg Express. At the plate, he has hit .222 with one home run and 13 runs batted in. It will be interesting to see how Bohannon chooses to use McMillan next season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama baseball and those who could potentially find their way into the major leagues.
