Ohio State punter, Jesse Mirco finds new home down south

Jesse Mirco is heading to the SEC.

Last week we told you Jesse Mirco somewhat unexpectedly entered the transfer portal. Today we found out exactly where the former Ohio State punter will take his talents. Mirco announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he’ll be heading to Nashville to play at Vanderbilt.

Mirco will have one year of eligibility left after spending his first three years in Columbus. The Aussie punter averaged just shy of 44 yards per punt and landed 55 punts inside of the 20 during his time in Scarlet and Gray.

In what was an offensive clunker of a Cotton Bowl for the Buckeyes, Mirco shined having one of his best games ever where he averaged just over 48 yards per punt. It was one of the few highlights in what was a forgettable effort against Missouri.

Mirco is the 11th member of the football team to find a new home via the transfer portal.

Ohio State Punter Jesse Mirco enters transfer portal

Perhaps a bit unexpected? #GoBucks

Friday night was a rough one for Buckeye fans as Ohio State lost 14-3 to Missouri in the Cotton Bowl. Unfortunately, now the list of players to enter the transfer portal has expanded with the Buckeye punter entering on Saturday night.

Jesse Mirco was very busy on Friday night with the Buckeyes’ offensive struggles recording a career-high eight punts. The junior punter has started for the Buckeyes in each of the last three seasons averaging 43.9 yards per punt with a net average of 40.7 yards over his career.

This decision is a little curious because of how seldom we see punters enter the portal. Could it indicate that Ohio State is moving on from special teams coordinator, Parker Fleming, who has received a lot of criticism from Buckeye fans after the struggles on special teams in his two seasons in the role?

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Ohio State football players that earned their Buckeye leaves against Wisconsin

Who do you think played well for the Buckeyes against Wisconsin? #GoBucks

It was another grind it out game for [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag], but as they have done all season long, they prevailed, defeating Wisconsin on the road 24-10.

The Buckeyes continue to rely on their defense to help win them games, a stark contrast from what we have seen from past [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] coached teams. It’s been a complete 180 degree turn this season.

This was a solid win, but one where not too many Ohio State players made a huge impact on. However, the ones below did and here are the players that I believe earned their Buckeyes leaves withe the hard fought win against Wisconsin Saturday night in Mad-town.

Which Ohio State football players earned their Buckeye leaves against Penn State?

Which Buckeyes earned their helmet decals against Penn State?

For 60 minutes on Saturday, Ohio State football was in a battle with visiting Penn State, and earned a gritty, hard fought 20-12 victory in front of a raucous home crowd.

With another win in the book, the Buckeyes seventh of the season, you will see plenty more Buckeye leaf decals on players helmets next week as they visit Wisconsin. (We’re getting to the point of the year where some players are almost full!)

Some of those players get them for team achievements, but these players highlighted below earned them for their individual play in our own personal grading scale. Check out who we thought played the best football for Ohio State on Saturday and deserves new helmet decals.

Five Ohio State football players make PFF’s preseason All-American teams

Five Buckeyes projected to make the All-American teams with two more honorable mention?!? #GoBucks

Another day, another group of [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] players getting selected on a preseason All-American team.

This time it’s Pro Football Focus, who not only picked five Buckeyes to have those honors, but also had two more as honorable mention. You can probably guess at least one who is on the first team. Hint, he wears No. 18 and has been all over numerous other All-American lists. He also has an NFL Hall of Fame father to thank for passing some pretty impressive genes along.

The others aren’t quite as obvious, but it is a bunch of familiar names nevertheless. Find out below which five Buckeyes made either the first, second, or third team, along with the two that made honorable mention according to PFF.

Jesse Mirco makes Ray Guy watch list

We’ve got one more buckeye on a preseason watch list, this time for the Ray Guy Award. #GoBucks

Ohio State punter Jesse Mirco was one of 49 college football players appearing on the 2023 preseason Ray Guy Award watch list.

The Ray Guy Award is handed out annually to the best punter in the game and has been awarded since the year 2000. The Augusta Sports Council is the organization that judges the yearly performances for the honor.

Mirco, originally from Freemantle, Australia, was one of ten semifinalists last season. He averaged 45.4 yards per punt in 2022 and had a total of 37 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. He continued the long line of very good punters coming out of ProKick Australia.

For his career, Mirco has averaged 44.2 yards per punt. He’s hoping to improve on last year’s and his career average as things play out in 2023.

B.J. Sander is the only OSU punter to have won the award, taking home the honor in 2003. Stay with us as more and more college football preseason watch lists are announced over the coming days and weeks.

Top three punters in the Big Ten for 2023

We take a look at what we believe are the top three punters in the Big Ten entering 2023. #GoBucks

The Big Ten lacked clear-cut dominance at kicker, but the conference appears loaded at punter: A few guys could have made this list but didn’t. It shouldn’t be shocking an Iowa Hawkeye made this list because the special teams are always elite, or at least it will be until another Ferentz is promoted to special teams coordinator at Nepotism U.

An Ohio State Buckeye has also made the list, but that should be expected and the third man on the list is from the Indiana Hoosiers. That may be due to their poor offense rather than pure leg talent. Now let’s dive into the top three kickers in the Big Ten entering the 2023 season.

The top-rated Ohio State punter recruits since 2000

The top-rated Ohio State punter recruits since 2000 #GoBucks

We have been diving into some of the more highly touted recruits in Ohio State history. We recently discussed the quarterbacks, running backswide receiverstight endsoffensive tacklesguardscenterdefensive ends, defensive tacklesinside linebackersoutside linebackerscornerbacks, safeties and recruits listed as athletes.

Even though 247Sports‘ recruiting rankings only go back to 2000, there are some memorable names, but Ohio State has only picked up two big names since the start of the site. The lack of top-tier talent at punter isn’t all the fault of Ohio State though as highly-ranked punters are rare.

Keys for Ohio State to defeat Georgia in the Peach Bowl

What are your keys for the Buckeyes? #GoBucks

The Buckeyes are underdogs and aren’t projected by many to have a chance against Georgia, last year’s [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag] champion.

To say the Bulldogs are unbeatable, however, is false, even though they have not yet lost this season. They bring a 15-game winning streak and a 27-1 record over the last two seasons into this game.

It is not an easy task for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] and [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag], but that is why they play the game. For the Buckeyes to come away with a win and play for a national championship, they are going to have to play one of their most complete games of the year. There will be plenty of keys to getting a victory against Georgia and here are a few that stick out.

Ohio State punter Jesse Mirco sheds black stripe

Black stripe alert, this time coming courtesy from the land down under.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are in the thick of training camp leading up to the season opener against Minnesota and black stripes are being shed like snakeskin. The latest to officially become a Buckeye? Punter Jesse Mirco.

Mirco hails from the land down under, an Australian rugby-style punter. He was a three-star recruit, but that’s about as many stars these specialists will ever get. Mirco was ranked as the No. 6 overall punter and third best out of Australia according to 247Sports.

Introduced as the “punter from down under” Mirco seemed excited to be part of the OSU family.

“I just want to thank you boys for welcoming me into the brotherhood,” Mirco said. “All the coaching staff for the opportunity. Coach Mick, Coach Chris, and the strength staff. And the specs. Go Bucks!”

Family feel has to be important when you travel halfway across the globe to chase your dreams and Mirco is in the right place for it.

Mirco will have some big shoes to fill as Drue Chrisman signed with his hometown Cincinnati Bengals after being a two-year starter for the Bucks. But do Aussies have bottle flipping skills? We’ll have to wait and see on that one.

We’ll keep you up to speed as more black stripes will surely be removed in the coming days.
