Chiefs use veteran salary benefit on RB Jerick McKinnon to save cap space

McKinnon’s contract will save the Chiefs some salary-cap space.

Just ahead of the 2021 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs made a move in free agency, signing 28-year-old veteran RB Jerick McKinnon on a one-year deal.

A former third-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings out of Georgia Southern, McKinnon enters his eighth season in the league. He’s coming off a three-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers that was marred by injury, but he’s looking for a chance at redemption in Kansas City.

He’ll be vying for a roster spot against players like Darwin Thompson, Elijah McGuire and Derrick Gore. If McKinnon does make the team, the contract signed is a deal in and of itself. As first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, McKinnon received the veteran salary benefit from Kansas City. That means he’ll receive a salary of over $1 million, but his cap hit will only be $850K.

The move to sign McKinnon ahead of the draft put the team in a better situation at the position. It allowed the team to remove running back from their list of potential needs in the draft, but also created some more competition at the bottom of the roster.

It’s really the epitome of a low-risk, high reward signing for Kansas City. It’s reminiscent of the Chiefs bringing in veteran players like Carlos Hyde and DeAndre Washington in each of the past two seasons. If McKinnon isn’t good enough to make the 53-man roster in Kansas City, maybe he can be used as a trade chip come September.

Chiefs to sign free agent RB Jerick McKinnon

The Kansas City Chiefs reinforce their backfield depth ahead of Day 2 of the 2021 NFL draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs are making a free-agent addition ahead of Day 2 of the 2021 NFL draft.

As first reported by NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the Chiefs are set to sign former Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon. The report was later confirmed by The Athletic’s Nate Taylor. A former third-round pick by Minnesota out of Georgia Southern, the 28-year-old McKinnon is entering his eighth season in the league.

Kansas City had shown some early interest in the free-agent running back market, inquiring about Giovani Bernard, who signed with the Buccaneers. They’re specifically looking for someone who can contribute in the passing game. At his height with the Vikings in 2017, McKinnon rushed for over 500 yards and caught over 50 passes for over 400 yards. He definitely fits the mold given what they’ve been looking for.

The problem with McKinnon has been availability. A torn ACL kept him off the field for both the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the 49ers. He appeared in all 16 games in 2020 with four starts for San Francisco. He carried the ball 81 times for 319 yards and five touchdowns and also caught 41 passes for over 250 yards and a score.

Hopefully, after several years removed from the injury, McKinnon can return to the best version of himself on the field in Kansas City. The veteran running back will create some competition at the bottom of the roster, namely with former sixth-round draft pick Darwin Thompson.

49ers re-sign RB Jeff Wilson Jr. to 1-year deal

The 49ers will keep their leading rusher from last season. Jeff Wilson Jr. was due to hit free agency before signing a 1-year deal.

Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. was a bright spot for the 49ers in an otherwise dismal 2020 campaign. San Francisco on Tuesday announced Wilson, who was set to be a restricted free agent, will return to the club next season on a one-year deal.

Wilson began his career as an undrafted rookie with the 49ers in 2018. Injuries during his first season pushed him from the practice squad to the active roster, and his hard-nosed running style earned him a couple starts in the six games he played.

His role in 2019 became more limited after Tevin Coleman signed and Raheem Mostert emerged as the team’s top running back, but Wilson still saw some success as a short-yardage back in 10 games.

Last season he broke out in his second chance at being a lead back. Wilson last season led the 49ers in rushing yards with 600, rushing touchdowns with seven, and total touchdowns with 10. He started three of his 12 games and posted career-highs across the board.

By signing Wilson to a deal now, San Francisco avoids a team making an offer they’d be forced to match to retain the running back in restricted free agency.

With Jerick McKinnon likely on his way out and Coleman due to hit the free agent market, Wilson looks to be in line for a substantial role next season alongside Raheem Mostert in the 49ers backfield.

Jerick McKinnon harshly says he’s not returning to 49ers in 2021

It’s not official, but Jerick McKinnon said on Instagram he won’t be back with the San Francisco 49ers.

[jwplayer jtAXhJes]

The writing was on the wall that Jerick McKinnon was unlikely to be back with the 49ers for the 2021 season. The running back on Wednesday appeared to confirm as much in an Instagram Live video with 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

McKinnon was asked in the video’s chat whether he’d be back in San Francisco next season. His response was a resounding “no,” preceded by an expletive.

“We gone! We gone!” McKinnon said.

Perhaps it was simply a joke for social media, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if the 28-year-old is eager to leave a crowded backfield in Santa Clara. He struggled with injuries for the first two years of the four-year deal he signed ahead of the 2018 season. McKinnon tore his ACL a week before the season opener in 2018, then got hurt again in camp before the following year.

Rather than releasing him in 2020, San Francisco restructured his deal to reduce his base salary and virtually eliminate the final year, making him an unrestricted free agent in the 2021 offseason.

McKinnon finally returned to action in 2020 and looked to be on track for a big year. He posted four touchdowns in four games and was averaging 5.6 yards per carry on 34 attempts. It looked as if he’d at worst be an effective third-down back. His productivity dwindled greatly as the year wore on though. He tallied only 31 touches and didn’t find the end zone over the final seven games. McKinnon finished the year 572 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns.

While the 49ers backfield struggled with injuries McKinnon still couldn’t work his way back into the rotation in any meaningful way. It’s hard to imagine he’s part of their long-term plan, and he may have done enough early in the year to earn a shot at carving out a larger role with a club.

Ideas for Kyle Shanahan to help solve QB issue

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is up for anything at quarterback, so we adjusted their depth chart.

The 49ers have a problem at quarterback. Nick Mullens, the backup-turned-starter following an injury to Jimmy Garoppolo, turned the ball over twice in a Week 14 loss to Washington. Those two turnovers went for defensive touchdowns in an eight-point defeat that effectively ended San Francisco’s season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday after the contest said he was “up for anything” at quarterback.

He really meant one of the two quarterbacks on the active roster, but “up for anything” indicates he’s open to some new ideas, so we put together a list of some outside-the-box options under center for San Francisco to finish the year.

Who would be San Francisco 49ers’ emergency QB?

In the wake of Kendall Hinton’s start for the Denver Broncos, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked who would be his emergency QB.

[jwplayer boGiTYJc-ThvAeFxT]

After the entire Denver Broncos quarterback depth chart was forced onto the COVID-19 list because of a positive test and failure to adhere to protocols, the team turned to practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton to lead their offense in a Week 12 bout with the Saints. While the 49ers hope to avoid such a situation, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked who the Niners’ emergency quarterback is in a video conference with reporters on Monday.

We’ve got a couple of choices. They fight over it, but it’s been (FB Kyle Juszczy) Juice. He takes a lot of pride in that, but now that (RB Jerick McKinnon) Jet’s back, and no offense Juice, but Jet played quarterback in college. So, I’m probably going to go with Jet.

Juszczyk spent some time in high school under center and also ran some wildcat formations in college at Harvard. He has not thrown an NFL pass.

McKinnon was the starting quarterback at Georgia Southern for his first three collegiate seasons, leading the team’s triple-option attack. His lone NFL pass attempt came in 2016 while he was with the Vikings. It fell incomplete.

Fantasy football: 5 sleepers to start, 5 starters to sit in Week 10

Fantasy football sleepers, starts, sits, Week 10.

We’ve hit double-digits in the NFL season as Week 10 is here.

Now more than ever, especially if you’re still alive in the playoff push, setting your lineup correctly for the weekend is a major key in fantasy football. Nothing worse than having a guy on the bench going off or someone in your starting lineup that has laid a dud.

Let us help you right here. Our five sleepers to start and five starters to sit in fantasy football Week 10:

Sleepers to start

Browns wide receiver Rashard Higgins. Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports

QB Jared Goff, Rams

vs. Seahawks

Jared Goff wasn’t great going into the Rams’ bye last weekend… but we’ve hit the point with the Seahawks defense where we can pretty much start whoever plays against them.

RB Antonio Gibson, Washington

at Lions

With Alex Smith starting, their running backs are going to be elite for fantasy production because he throws to them a lot. The Lions also are the worst defense in terms of fantasy football against opposing running backs, just look at Dalvin Cook last week.

RB Leonard Fournette, Bucs

at Panthers

The Bucs are pretty inconsistent with their rushing attack and just attack in general. We never know who will lead the way. The Panthers are the fifth-worst team in fantasy football against opposing running backs, though… so Fournette should get some looks.

WR Rashard Higgins, Browns

vs. Texans

Rashard Higgins should have a good look to heat back up against the Texans since Odell Beckham’s still done for the year. Houston has the sixth-worst fantasy football defense vs. WRs, and they’ve allowed nine TDs to the position in the last four games.

WR DJ Chark, Jaguars

at Packers

DJ Chark had 146 yards and a touchdown via QB Jake Luton last week. The Packers have a better secondary than the Texans, but their No. 1 CB in Jaire Alexander is still in the concussion protocol, which would make things massively easier for Chark.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan rules out leading RB Raheem Mostert (ankle) vs. Saints

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan ruled out running back Raheem Mostert, his team’s leading rusher, against the New Orleans Saints.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”9IEuHBHVun-1034104-7498″]

Injuries have hit the San Francisco 49ers harder than most teams this season, and that trend will continue in Week 10’s matchup with the New Orleans Saints. On Wednesday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan preemptively ruled out running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman as they each recover from injuries.

It’s a big loss, for Mostert in particular: he has only appeared in four games this year but still leads San Francisco in both total rushing yards (303) and yards per game (75.8), averaging an impressive 5.9 yards per carry. With him sidelined, the 49ers must instead turn to backup Jerick McKinnon, who has gained just 261 rushing yards in nine games (three starts). McKinnon has been held to 18 yards or fewer in four of his last five games.

Last season, Mostert talked his share of trash before visiting the Superdome — and Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan felt compelled to tip his hat to Mostert’s 49ers squad afterwards, saying: “You’ve got to be able to stop that run. At the end of the day, they ended up with over a buck-fifty (150 yards rushing) on the ground. Whether that’s Jimmy (Garoppolo) scrambling, whether that’s the 15 running backs that they have in the backfield, it’s something that we knew coming in that we were going to have to stop.”

Mostert was the leading rusher for San Francisco that day, picking up 69 yards on just 10 carries while gaining 40 receiving yards off of 2 catches (scoring a pair of touchdowns to boot). But the 49ers’ depth showed through with backups Coleman and Matt Breida combining for 60 rushing yards. McKinnon will be hoping to follow suit in Shanahan’s cutting-edge offense. Here’s hoping their former teammate Kwon Alexander will be ready to step up and slow them down.

QUARTERBACKS

DESHAUN WATSON, HOU

$6,900 DRAFTKINGS, $7,900 FANDUEL

We can no longer use the Bill O’Brien excuse in Houston. The man is finally gone and I personally can’t wait for Adam Gase to be dealt the same fate. We can only hope Watson can get back on track this week and come out of the gate with something to prove. Watson has been good but not great to start this year. His schedule had a very tough start with matchups against the Chiefs, Ravens and Steelers. The good news is Will Fuller is still healthy and the Jaguars rank 20th against opposing quarterbacks and allow 261 yards passing per game. Coming off a 300-yard, 2-touchdown game should provide some confidence in rostering Watson in Week 5.

Watson provides a safe floor at his price tag and is one of the best values on the entire slate. Vegas has the Texans putting up 30 points and without a elite running game most of those points should be rolling through Watson. We have him only a couple points behind Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen on our projection models currently but, given the discount, we love the value he provides.

MATT RYAN, ATL

$6,100 DRAFTKINGS, $7,700 FANDUEL

The Falcons are struggling mightily and confidence is at a all time low in Atlanta. Ryan is more of a DraftKings only play for me, where I want to price enforce the $6,100 cost for a quarterback with one of the best matchups on the board. If Vegas is right and the Falcons put up 28 points, we can hope that Matt Ryan puts up 3-4 touchdowns in this matchup.

We have to look out for the status of Julio Jones, if he is out I may lower my exposure to Ryan and bump up my exposure to Calvin Ridley and the rest of the receiving core. If Jones is out feel free to pivot down to Daniel Jones or up to Mahomes, Prescott or Jackson in Week 5.

RUNNING BACKS

MIKE DAVIS, CAR

$6,400 DRAFTKINGS, $6,800 FANDUEL

I never would have thought I would be highlighting the two running backs I am about to dive into but here we are in Week 5 of 2020.

I saw a great tweet this past week that read “We are heading into the 4th quarter of 2020, lets hope we are playing the Atlanta Falcons”

Davis and the Panthers are playing the Falcons and you best believe he is salivating due to the opportunity they present. With two touchdowns in his past two games since he took over for Christian McCaffrey, Mike Davis is now a stable force in the Carolina backfield. He has produced over 22 DraftKings points in his past 2 games and now gets the dream matchup versus the Falcons, who cant stop a nose bleed. He might be highly owned but take the 20+ points and lock in Davis in Week 5.

JERICK MCKINNON, SF

$5,800 DRAFTKINGS, $6,400 FANDUEL

McKinnon dominated the backfield touches in Week 4 and has produced in each and every week of this season. This trend should continue in Week 5 with a matchup versus Miami, who rank 19th against opposing running backs.

McKinnon scored a touchdown in each of the four games this season and has averaged 16.6 DraftKings points. It looks like its McKinnon’s backfield after he received 14 of the 17 rushing attempts and also had 9 targets in the passing game. If Mostert is still out in Week 5, look McKinnon’s way and lock in the value in order to pay up at other spots.

WIDE RECEIVERS

DARIUS SLAYTON, NYG

$4,800 DRAFTKINGS, $5,800 FANDUEL

I told myself that I am done rostering any players from the Jets or the Giants for the rest of the season and then I witnessed again how bad the Cowboys defense truly is.

If the Browns can score 49, the Giants should score at least 24 right?

This is truly a play on the Cowboys defense and not the Giants offense. Lets look at what the Cowboys have allowed as far as scoring this year. Here are the game totals: 20, 39, 38 and 49. The targets for Slayton have been there each and every week, but the production has yet to follow. At $4,900 versus this Cowboy defense I am willing to take the calculated risk on Slayton or Evan Engram, who I will mention later in this article.

ROBBIE ANDERSON, CAR

$5,900 DRAFTKINGS, $6,200 FANDUEL

Leading into this season and every week so far to start the season all the hype has been on DJ Moore. The outcome has not lived up to the hype and each and every week the production has been gobbled up by Robbie Anderson.

Averaging 19.7 points on the season, its been obvious to me that Robbie is the No. 1 receiver in this offense and has out-targeted Moore 34-32 with a way higher catch rate. With two 100 yard games (and a 99 yarder), there is a clear rapport with Teddy Bridgewater. He has been a fantasy darling all year and I expect that trend to continue with his plus-matchup against the Falcons in Week 5.

TIGHT ENDS

GEORGE KITTLE, SF

$6,600 DRAFTKINGS, $7,100 FANDUEL

The George Kittle breakout game finally came in Week 4. Kittle is absolute beast and I wouldn’t want to step in his path once he got the ball in his hands, because his goal is to hurt someone.

Coming off a 15-reception, 183-yard game, ownership maybe high, but with all the value on the slate I think this is the week to pay up at tight end and lock in some points. I am fine with either paying up for Kittle or Mark Andrews and avoiding any potential land mines at the value tight end spots.

EVAN ENGRAM, NYG

$4,400 DRAFTKINGS, $5,500 FANDUEL

I don’t like suggesting New York Giants players, but when I do they will be playing against the Dallas Cowboys. Do I have to remind you how bad this defense is? Baker Mayfield and Jarvis Landry were dropping dimes all over this defense last week as crazy as that sounds.

The Cowboys defense is terrible and their offense is good/potentially great. Which means the Cowboys should open the game up with the lead, allowing the Giants to play catch up the entire game. Engram’s production has seen an uptick lately and he is the best value at the position so lock him in and lets be present for his breakout performance.

DEFENSES

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

$4,200 DRAFTKINGS, $4,800 FANDUEL

How good is Bill Belichick? He is the best in the business and almost beat Patrick Mahomes with a combination of Brian Hoyer and some leftover scraps on offense. There hasn’t been a better coach in my lifetime and he is a defensive wizard who finds ways to disrupt the entire game plan of the opposing offense.

Give Belichick a young quarterback on the opposite side of the field and watch him dismantle their scheme and cause turnovers galore. If you have the cash to spend up at defense, roster Belichick and the Patriots.

HOUSTON TEXANS

$2,600 DRAFTKINGS, $3,700 FANDUEL

We can only hope that the Texans come together and play some inspired ball and cause some havoc for Gardner Minshew and the Jaguars. They are the cheapest defense I am willing to roster. Minshew will make mistakes and cough up the ball Sunday. With 10 sacks on the season, we can hope for 2-4 sacks, 1-2 turnovers and for the Texans to finally win a game and control some clock late. Their defense has been bad to start the year, but their schedule hasn’t been easy. Look for a bounce back performance out of the Texans at home in Week 5.

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

No first-round fantasy picks this time but enough fantasy starters to impact  your league.

QB Mitchell Trubisky – Benched
QB Jeff Driskel – Benched
RB Tarik Cohen – Knee (ACL?)
RB Chris Carson – Knee
TE Dallas Goedert – Ankle
TE Jordan Reed – Knee, ankle
TE Jared Cook – Ankle
WR DeSean Jackson – Hamstring
WR Russell Gage – Concussion
WR Diontae Johnson – Concussion
WR Bryan Edwards – Ankle
WR John Brown – Calf
WR Michael Pittman – Ankle
WR Mike Williams – Hamstring
WR Chris Godwin – Hamstring

Chasing Ambulances

Not as bad as Week 2 but still worth noting.

RB Tarik Cohen – Is believed to have a season-ending ACL injury. The Bears have not done much with the backfield so far and David Montgomery remains the primary back.  Ryan Nall is the only other back on the active roster so they’ll be either calling up a practice squad player or scraping a “best available” back from the waiver wire. Cohen lacked any consistent fantasy value, so his absence likely means that Montgomery will be a bit more work rather than a new back will be worth grabbing.

RB Chris Carson – Left the game and HC Pete Carroll said he had a knee sprain and would get an MRI on Monday. Carlos Hyde should be owned by the team with Carson but if not he’s worth grabbing. Hyde would be first in line to replace Carson if needed and is second on the team with 16 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown this year. The Seahawks face the Dolphins and Vikings next, so the starting running back is a fantasy option for the next two weeks.

WR Diontae Johnson – Missed the second half with what was reported to be a concussion while running a reverse. If he misses time, it is less clear that any individual wide receiver will see more work. James Washington would be first in line but the rookie Chase Claypool also figures in and tight end Eric Ebron just had his best game as a Steeler. Washington is the best bet but that may not mean much.

WR DeSean Jackson – Left with a hamstring strain and so did Dallas Goedert (ankle). They were already without Jalen Reagor (thumb) and Alshon Jeffery (foot). That allowed Greg Ward to have a career-best performance of eight catches for 72 yards and the lone receiving touchdown. His 11 targets paced the team. Deontay Burnett had been called up from the practice squad to help out but only caught three passes for 19 yards.  Ward deserves to land on a fantasy roster as (currently) a starting wideout on an offense that has to throw to catch up. But the next two games are at the 49ers and at the Steelers, so roll back the expectations for any of their receivers.

WR John Brown – Suffered a calf injury and had been nursing a foot injury last week.  In his place, fourth-round rookie Gabriel Davis took his place and caught four passes for 81 yards while Cole Beasley stepped up to lead the team with six receptions for 100 yards. Stefon Diggs still caught a touchdown but ended with four catches for 49 yards. The Bills hit the road for the next two weeks to play at the Raiders and Titans. Davis and Beasley become at least lower-end options for those games if Brown remains out.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

QB Deshaun Watson – He’s been sacked 13 times and hit many more. The Texans have to start protecting him better because they have no chance if he is injured. Joe Burrow leads the NFL with 14 sacks only because the Eagles dumped him eight times this week. Watson was sacked at least four times each week.

QB Nick Foles – The change isn’t official yet, but Foles replaced the benched Mitchell Trubisky and led the Bears to a three-touchdown fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Falcons. He threw for 128 yards over the final 20 minutes of the game. The Bears host the Colts and Buccaneers next and came into the season with one of the most advantageous passing schedule strengths. Maybe Foles is the guy to realize that advantage.

TE Jimmy Graham – Caught six passes for 60 yards and two touchdowns against the Falcons. He scored in Week 1. But he flopped with just one catch in Week 2. Could be worth a stash to see if Foles continues to look for him but he’s been invisible in home games so far.

RB Darrell Henderson – He scored for the second week in a row and ran for 114 yards on 20 carries at the Bills. Malcolm Brown still had seven runs but only gained 19 yards. Cam Akers was out with a rib injury. He may end up a factor later in the year but at least for now, Henderson is the only fantasy play in this backfield.

WR Donte Inman – Scored twice in the loss to the Browns but only caught three of six targets for 38 yards. The Football Team host the Ravens and Rams next, so repeating the production is very unlikely.

WR Kalif Raymond – He led the Titan receivers with three receptions for 118 yards at the Vikings but that included a 61-yard catch. He’s on his third NFL team and never caught more than nine passes in a season. Not worth a free agent pick.

WR Justin Jefferson – The Vikings 1.22 pick this year, Jefferson broke out with a seven-catch, 175-yard effort against the Titans and scored his first NFL touchdown. His 4.43/40 speed was on display when he included catches of 31, 33 and 71 yards. The Vikings play on the road these next two weeks against the Texans and Seahawks, so there should be plenty of opportunities for him to contribute.

RB Rex Burkhead – James White remained out with his family tragedy, so Burkhead filled in. Sony Michel ran for 117 yards on nine carries but Burkhead converted his six rushes into 49 yards and two touchdowns, plus he led the team with seven catches for 49 yards and a third touchdown. It was everything that the James White owner was hoping to get. The backfield remains a committee approach and White will return, but Burkhead earned a spot on any fantasy roster with Michel or White on it.

RB Jerick McKinnon – With Tevin Coleman and Raheem Mostert out, McKinnon led the backfield with 14 runs for 38 yards and a score but was only good for three catches for 39 yards. Jeff Wilson was also allowed 12 rushes for 15 yards and a touchdown plus three receptions for 54 yards and a second score. The 49ers hit a string of three straight home games that go against the Eagles, Dolphins and Rams. There will be at least moderate fantasy value from whichever backs can play.

Giants backfield –  They only ran the ball ten times but that divided into Devonta Freeman (5-10), Wayne Gallman (4-7) and Dion Lewis (1-0).  Worse yet is that the only times they used the position for a reception was with Gallman (2-7) and Lewis (1-10) in a game that they lost by 27 points. None of the backs merit a fantasy start until one proves worthy and the Giants face three road venues over their next four games.

WR Tee Higgins – Played in his second NFL game and turned nine targets into five catches for 40 yards and two touchdowns. It’s a nice sign that the Bengals first two draft picks are already connecting so well.

RB Antonio McFarland – The Steelers 4.18 pick finally saw his first action when he ran for 42 yards on six carries and added a seven-yard catch. The 5-8 Maryland star sports a 4.4 speed and averaged 7.0 yards per carry. James Conner remains safe as the workhorse back, but McFarland was chosen to add a new, speedy complement in the backfield.

RB Mike Davis – Nice payback on handcuffing Christian McCaffrey or at least having early access to the waiver wire. Davis was limited to  46 yards on 13 runs but led the Panthers with eight catches for 45 yards and the lone offensive touchdown. Not that much of a step down from what McCaffrey would have done.

QB Justin Herbert – He’s only started two games but topped 300 yards in both. Versus the Panthers, the rookie passed for 33 yards and one score though he lost two fumbles and tossed an interception. When Herbert plays,  Keenan Allen hasn’t gained fewer than 96 yards. HC Anthony Lynn said that Tyrod Taylor was still the starter when healthy… but why?

WR Kenny Golladay – Missed the first two weeks with a hamstring strain, but returned despite the questionable tag. He led the Lions with six catches for 57 yards and one score and the passing offense just seemed to operate better in their win over the Cardinals. He’ll likely draw CB Marshon Lattimore when the Saints visit this week, but at least he’s back and helping the other receivers as well.

Buccaneers backfield – Despite the success of Leonard Fournette in Week 2, the Bucs reverted back to favoring Ronald Jones (13-53) while Fournette was left with seven carries to gain 15 yards. Both backs caught two short passes and neither scored. The schedule tightens up with the next matchups going against the Chargers, Bears and Packers, so there’s nothing safe about this backfield.

TE Rob Gronkowski – After a catchless Week 2, he was roundedly dropped in all fantasy leagues and even said he was there to block. So, naturally, he led the Buccaneers with seven targets for six catches for 48 yards. There’s no reliability in any receivers outside of Chris Godwin or Mike Evans. Too early to buy back into Gronk as a fantasy option.

WR Cedrick Wilson – The Cowboys No. 4 wideout just caught five passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns. He recorded no catches in the first two weeks and totaled just five receptions in all of last year. It’s favorable for the Cowboys to get that level of production from a No. 4 wideout, but he’s not worth touching for a fantasy team.

WR Allen Lazard – scored in the two road games this year and did little in the one homestand. Lazard ended with a team-high six catches for 146 yards and one score at the Saints on Sunday night. The Packers face the Falcons this week but – at home.

Huddle player of the week

Alvin Kamara  –  He everything you hoped for when you drafted him last year. It took a little more faith to draft him this summer after that down year and he’s paid back his team owners. Kamara was Saints’ best (and nearly only) weapon in their loss to the Packers. He rushed for 58 yards and caught 13 of 14 targets for 139 yards and two scores. If your league awards reception points, his 44.70 probably helped you to a win. His 52-yard touchdown catch through much of the Packers defense should end up on an NFL highlight reel for 2020.

Salute!
