Texas running backs ranked among the best position groups in CFB

Texas should have lots of confidence in its running back room this season.

Texas should have lots of confidence in its running back room this season.

Bijan Robinson leads the group as one of the top offensive players in college football. The junior totaled nearly 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in just 10 games last season. Robinson returns with Heisman odds and NFL draft aspirations.

What makes Texas’ running back unit so special is the depth and talent behind Robinson.

Senior Roschon Johnson is a rock-solid back who displays excellent toughness and leadership skills. Johnson is a great change of pace complement to Robinson.

Speedy Keilan Robinson is a home run threat every time he touches the ball. The former Alabama transfer is a great gadget guy and plays a huge role on special teams.

Young guys Johnathan Brooks and Jaydon Blue are exciting talents who have bright futures ahead of them.

247Sports ranks Texas’ running back room as the No. 5 overall position group in the nation. Pretty good company to be mentioned with for the Longhorns ball carriers.

Early position outlook: Texas is locked and loaded at RB

The running back room led by Bijan Robinson is locked and loaded for 2022.

Many teams across the country would love to have as much talent and depth as Texas does at running back.

Bijan Robinson, who headlines the room, is one most electric players in college football. The junior-to-be is must-see TV every time he touches the ball.

Robinson is a star, but what makes this running back room so great is the number of quality players behind him.

Senior Roschon Johnson is a tough runner who provides excellent leadership. Johnson finished the season with a monster performance against Kansas State. His 179 yards helped Texas end a seven-game losing skid to cap the season.

After Johnson is speedy Keilan Robinson. The Alabama transfer flashed his wheels in 2021. Many Texas fans hope to see more of No. 7 next fall.

Young Johnathan Brooks passed the eye test during his freshman season. Brooks showed a mix of great vision and quickness in a limited number of snaps in his first year at Texas.

The 2022 class features Jaydon Blue. A four-star prospect who sat his senior year to prepare for college football. Blue enrolled early for the spring semester and was already getting to work.

Here is an early look at Texas running back depth chart heading into spring ball:

How Texas’ current, future running back room looks after Rueben Owens’ decommitment

After Rueben Owens’ decommitment, there are questions with Stan Drayton’s group. Here is the status of the current/future of UT’s RB room:

Five-star 2023 running back Rueben Owens made news by decommitting from Texas on Thursday afternoon. For a sophomore who “shut down” his commitment before being able to visit a single campus, seeing a change in heart is not surprising.

Even so, Owens and his father have iterated Texas is still the leader going forward. Schools like Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, and Ohio State will take interest in the five-star as well. A long two years are ahead for what should be an entertaining recruitment.

Focusing back in Austin, the future of the running back room is now in question. Owens was expected to hold the Longhorns over until at least the 2026 season, with players such as Jaydon Blue ahead of him.

The current situation is in good hands with Bijan Robinson and Co. expecting to have a big season. Texas running backs coach Stan Drayton and head coach Steve Sarkisian have done an excellent job nailing down and developing talent.

However, there is still work to do on the recruitment scene. Key prospects from the 2022 class remain, while the Longhorns are back at square one in the 2023 cycle.

Here is the status of the current and future of Texas’ running back room:

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian comments on high school players opting out

Jaydon Blue announced his decision to opt-out of his senior year last Thursday. Texas HC Steve Sarkisian thinks this is just the beginning.

Opting out or holding out has been a trend in college football and the NFL for years now. Professionals will refuse to participate in offseason workouts or practice in hopes of a new contract. Take a step down, and NFL-ready players are skipping bowl games so a freak injury does not cause their draft stock to plummet.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, elite college football players opted out of the season to prepare for the draft. Without punishments either. Four of the top 10 picks in the 2021 NFL drafts were opt-outs, despite not playing a football game in over a year.

Something borderline “historic” occurred on May 20. For the first time at the high school level, a big named, blue-chip recruit opted out of their senior season to prepare for college football.

Five-star running back Jaydon Blue announced his decision last Thursday, saying he will focus on his academics and off-the-field training before enrolling in January. According to a report, the decision was clearly communicated with Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

When speaking at the Touchdown Club of Houston luncheon on Wednesday, the Texas head coach was asked about the specific scenario without being able to mention Blue by name (NCAA rules). Sarkisian said he has “put a lot of thought into it” and thinks Blue’s opt-out was just the beginning.

“I think this is bigger than one individual,” said Sarkisian. I think this is going to be something that we have to wrap our heads around. I do not think this is a one-off, one high school kid. This is somewhat of a trickle-down effect that we are dealing with from professionals, to college athletes, and now, potentially at the high school level. It’s a relatively big issue that we have got to start wrapping our brains around.”

Sarkisian continued, saying he does not know how to feel about high school players opting out. Supporting the people involved with the situation should the priority No. 1, though.

“I don’t necessarily know what’s good, what’s bad, what’s right, what’s wrong as it pertains to the University, the individuals, the kids on our team, and their future in the NFL,” said Sarkisian. “Our biggest thing we’re trying to do is support the high school coaches and knowing the job they have to do and support the families and young men that are even maybe talking about making this type of decision.”

If the 2021 NFL draft is any indicator, high school players opting out of their senior seasons will have no repercussions. With how talented of a running back Blue is, the likelihood of him still having a scholarship and enrolling at Texas is high. Even if he was out of the game for nearly a year.

Sarkisian could very well be right — this is not the end, it is the beginning. College coaches are going to have to adapt and even set the precedent for what is right and what is wrong.

Texas finds itself as being the guinea pig for top high school recruits opting out.

Is Texas RB commit changing the game with a senior year decision?

A sign of things to come or just a one-off?

We have seen players opting out of bowl games prior to last season, when multiple players also opted out from a COVID-19 impacted year. Those circumstances were different, but yesterday, Texas running back commit Jaydon Blue made his decision to forgo his senior high school season and prepare for his tenure with the Longhorns.

The real question surrounding Blueā€™s decision is if others will follow. As a running back, the shelf life for a career is much shorter than other positions, so an opt out isnā€™t out of the question, but at that level itā€™s a bit of a interesting choice.

Blue plays in one of the most competitive states for high school football in Texas, so keeping his mileage down does make sense, but heā€™s going to miss out on so much. Senior activities, playing with your high school friends for the last time, beating your rivals and other school traditions for the outgoing seniors.

Itā€™s clear that Blue is making a ā€œbusinessā€ decision, but I donā€™t see this becoming a common theme among high school players. We might see others do the same, itā€™s an individual choice. I donā€™t see Blueā€™s choice as a sign of things to come, heā€™s just making a choice that he believes will be the best for his future.

Four-star Texas RB commit Jaydon Blue opts-out of senior season

Four-star running back Jaydon Blue announced he is opting out of his senior season. He plans on focusing on academics and field training.

For quite a few years now, we have seen college football players expecting to declare for the NFL draft opt-out of meaningless bowl games. We even saw players not play during the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns.

Opting out has now reached the high school level, with Jaydon Blue saying he will not play football during his senior season. The four-star running back announced his decision via Twitter on Thursday.

According to Horns247, Blue and his family communicated with the Texas staff as to why he will not play for Klein Cain this year.

Blue will “take this time to focus on my academics while enhancing [his] off the field training/ rehab regimen.” The running back has had quite the workload over the past seasons, carrying the ball 432 times. Saving his body for the college level must be at the front of Blue’s mind.

You can read his full statement below:

After countless hours of evaluation, I have made the decision to forego my senior season of High-School football. This has been a very difficult decision for my family & I. Football is a brutal sport, and the wear and tear associated with the RB position is undeniable. I plan to take this time to focus on my academics while enhancing my off the field training/ rehab regimen. This is a strategic & conscious effor to ensure that I am prepared to perform at an elite level at the collegiate rankings during the 2022 season. I want to thank each of my coaches & teammates at klein Cain Highschool. The relationships established have helpmed mold me into the young man I am today. YOu have my continued support this season and in the future. This is an incremental steps in hopes of one day fullfilling my NFL dreams. Jaydon Blue. Signing out.

Blue managed 3,767 rushing yards and 46 touchdowns on his 432 carries. As a sophomore, he was named Texas District 15-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year and then Texas District 15-6A Offensive MVP as a junior.

The four-star running back currently headlines Texas’ 2022 recruiting cycle. He and Maalik Murphy have been the backbone of the class, trying to get some of the best prospects in the country to join them in Austin.

With Blue now not playing his senior season, he is expected to enroll early and be on campus for spring practice in 2022. The running back room will include him, Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson, and Jonathon Brooks.

Where Texas’ 2022 offensive commits and top targets rank after ESPN’s updated rankings

A plethora of Steve Sarkisian’s top remaining ’22 offensive targets is highly ranked. Here is where they stand in the latest ESPN300 update.

Steve Sarkisian has done well locking down some of the top offensive players in the country early into his days as Texas’ head coach. Maalik Murphy, Jaydon Blue, and Armani Winfield are currently committed, with more elite talent surely to follow.

The early signing is not until December, giving the Longhorns plenty of time to make a few more splashes. With official visits occurring over the month of June, Sarkisian and his staff will have the opportunity to sell the 2022 class on their product in person. Some of the top players in the country have already locked down official visit dates.

After 247Sports updated their 2022 class rankings in February, another top recruiting website did the same on Thursday.

ESPN revised their top 300 prospects for the 2022 class, with Blue being Texas’ highest-rated commit. He is the No. 5 running back in the country, just ahead of Oklahoma‘s Raleek Brown. Murphy and Winfield are in the ESPN300 as well.

A plethora of Sarkisian’s top remaining targets is highly ranked. Former commit Evan Stewart earned five-star status, while quarterback Quinn Ewers remained the No. 1 player in the entire country. The offensive line trio of Kelvin Banks, Devon Campbell, and Kam Dewberry are also top 125 prospects.
