Former Patriots center James Ferentz lands coaching gig with Giants

Former Patriots center James Ferentz is taking on an assistant coaching role.

Former New England Patriots offensive lineman James Ferentz will join the New York Giants’ coaching staff as an assistant coach, per a report from the team’s official website.

This marks a Patriots reunion of sorts, as Giants head coach Brian Daboll was also part of the New England staff on several occasions.

Ferentz announced his retirement on February 19, ending a 10-year career in the NFL. He played for the Patriots from 2017-2023, appearing in 40 games and starting in 10 of them. He was also a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams with New England.

Now, he will throw his hat in the coaching ring.

Ferentz was a consistent and stable lineman throughout his time with the Patriots. He will look now to provide that same stability coaching from the sidelines for the Giants.

Giants hire former Patriots OL James Ferentz to coaching staff

The New York Giants added James Ferentz to the coaching staff.

The New York Giants announced they are hiring James Ferentz as their new assistant offensive line coach. He will be under first year unit coach Carmen Bricillo, who was hired earlier this year to replace Bobby Johnson.

Ferentz, 34, is the son of legendary Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz where he also played his college ball. Ferentz, an offensive lineman who played for Houston, Denver and New England in his lightyear NFL career.

He appeared in 61 games, starting 10, and has two Super Bowl rings from his time with the Broncos and Patriots.

Ferentz played under Bricillo in New England from 2019-21.

Former Broncos center James Ferentz retires after 9-year NFL career

James Ferentz, who won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos in 2015, has retired after a nine-year career in the NFL.

James Ferentz has retired after a nine-year career in the NFL, the 34-year-old offensive lineman announced on his Instagram page on Monday.

Some fans may not remember him, but Ferentz played a role in the Denver Broncos’ run to Super Bowl 50 during the 2015 season.

After he entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa with the Houston Texans in 2014, the Broncos claimed Ferentz off waivers when the Texans cut him ahead of the 2015 campaign.

Ferentz served as a backup rotational lineman that season, playing 55 snaps on offense as Denver went 12-4 in the regular season. He then made an appearance in the AFC Championship game and the Broncos went on to later defeat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50.

Ferentz spent one more year in Denver and then played for the New England Patriots from 2017-2023, starting 10 games. Everyone on the Broncos’ 2015 squad — from big-name stars to role players — contributed to the club’s Super Bowl 50 win, and Ferentz will always have that on his resume.

New England didn’t agree to a contract extension with Trent Brown on Monday. That situation combined with Ferentz’s retirement indicates the winds of change are truly blowing on the Patriots’ offensive line.

65 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 65 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 65 jersey number.

The New England Patriots are officially 65 days away from opening up their regular season schedule at home against the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles.

So we’re continuing our countdown series today by listing every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 65 jersey.

The number currently belongs to Patriots center James Ferentz, who should have more competition along the offensive front with the team using a fourth-round pick on rookie center Jake Andrews in the 2023 NFL draft.

But other standouts have worn the jersey as well, including former Pro Bowl offensive guard Damien Woody and six-time AFL All-Star Houston Antwine.

Here’s every Patriots player that has ever worn the No. 65:

66 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 66 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 66 jersey number.

Another day in the books, and now, the New England Patriots are 66 days away from their regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 10.

We’re continuing our countdown series, which has us listing every Patriots player that has ever worn a No. 66 jersey.

One of the names on the list is an unsung hero from the early championship teams. Long snapper Lonie Paxton, who is a member of the Patriots’ All-Dynasty Team, joined the same year Bill Belichick was hired as the head coach, and he served as a reliable specialist for New England for nine straight seasons.

NFL historians and perhaps even professional wrestling fans will remember Steve “Mongo” McMichael as another former player that wore the No. 66 jersey for a time being in New England.

There were clearly many others, and we’re looking at all of them today. Here’s every Patriots player that has ever worn No. 66 (via Pro Football Reference):

Patriots re-sign backup offensive lineman ahead of free agency

New England is making moves ahead of free agency.

The New England Patriots aren’t taking any chances with their offensive line depth heading into 2023 free agency.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported early Thursday morning that the team had re-signed backup center James Ferentz to a one-year deal that included $200,000 in guaranteed money.

Ferentz stepped into the lineup after David Andrews went down with a concussion in 2022. Not long after Andrews returned, he went down again with a thigh injury. With the starting center turning 30 years old, it was obviously wise for the Patriots to make sure that their emergency option was on the roster for the upcoming 2023 NFL season.

The Patriots have now re-signed Ferentz, Matthew Slater and Conor McDermott ahead of free agency. There could be more moves to follow in the coming days before the market officially opens on March 15.

James Ferentz admits he can’t replace David Andrews alone

Patriots center James Ferentz realizes the impact of David Andrews’ injury.

New England Patriots center David Andrews left Sunday’s game against the New York Jets with a concussion. He played 15 snaps before being helped off the field to the locker room.

It appears as though the injury could potentially end Andrews’ season, and that would be a big blow for a Patriots offensive line that is currently struggling. Backup center James Ferentz took Andrews’ place on Sunday.

Ferentz has familiarity with the offensive line. He has been with the Patriots since 2017 and has appeared in 712 total offensive snaps in five seasons. He appeared in a career-high 69 percent of the offensive snaps in 2021 and has appeared and 66 percent of the snaps in 2022.

Nevertheless, he did not take Andrews’ loss lightly and explained what he means to the organization.

“I’ve always said this about Dave: You lose someone like Dave, it’s not one guy filling in for Dave,” Ferentz said, per NESN’s Zack Cox. “It’s going to take all five of us. And that’s every day coming in the building. Dave sets the tempo even on the days we’re just meeting. Losing him would really hurt, but we’ve got a good room. I think everyone can do their part and carry the weight.”

The Patriots’ offensive line has struggled this season. They gave up a whopping six sacks to the Jets.

Losing Andrews would be another huge blow for a team that is firmly in the playoff hunt. This means players such as Ferentz will really have to step up and make an impact.

Patriots promoting OL James Ferentz to 53-man roster

Ferentz is getting bumped to the 53-man roster.

The New England Patriots’ corresponding move to signing former first-round draft pick Laquon Treadwell to the practice squad on Monday is promoting veteran offensive lineman James Ferentz to the 53-man roster.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported the news on Tuesday.

It’s no surprise considering Ferentz’s versatility as an interior offensive lineman. He has the ability to line up at center or move over to the guard position.

Rookie sixth-round draft pick Chasen Hines was the only backup for the team at the interior line positions heading into Sunday’s Week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. So it obviously made sense for the team to bump Ferentz to the main roster.

The team already faces a slew of question marks along the offensive front, following a bumpy preseason.

Ferentz is a much-needed emergency option if the injury bug bites a Patriots offensive unit that’s seemingly already on the ropes before the season even begins.

Many familiar faces return to practice after initially being cut by Patriots

Multiple preseason fan favorites were back at practice on Wednesday.

There were plenty of familiar faces back at practice after initially being cut by the New England Patriots on Tuesday.

Like the rest of the league, the Patriots went through the tough process of trimming their rosters down to 53 players. On Wednesday, many of the players on the cut list went on waivers with the chance of being claimed by another team.

The Patriots were fortunate that tight end Devin Asiasi was their only former player that got claimed on waivers. So that paved the way for a slew of fan favorites to return, including Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Tre Nixon, J.J. Taylor and LaBryan Ray.

Even veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell was spotted at practice.

There was also a reported “mystery lineman” wearing a No. 68 jersey. Could it be Drew Desjarlais?

The Patriots will lean on some of their practice squad talent to fill roles at certain points throughout the season for a team that currently has more questions than answers.

At the very least, there are several players within the group that showed they were up for the challenge during the preseason slate.
