66 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 66 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 66 jersey number.

Another day in the books, and now, the New England Patriots are 66 days away from their regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles on September 10.

We’re continuing our countdown series, which has us listing every Patriots player that has ever worn a No. 66 jersey.

One of the names on the list is an unsung hero from the early championship teams. Long snapper Lonie Paxton, who is a member of the Patriots’ All-Dynasty Team, joined the same year Bill Belichick was hired as the head coach, and he served as a reliable specialist for New England for nine straight seasons.

NFL historians and perhaps even professional wrestling fans will remember Steve “Mongo” McMichael as another former player that wore the No. 66 jersey for a time being in New England.

There were clearly many others, and we’re looking at all of them today. Here’s every Patriots player that has ever worn No. 66 (via Pro Football Reference):

Patriots make a roster move after putting Christian Barmore on IR

The Patriots are moving a player up from the practice squad after placing Christian Barmore on IR.

The New England Patriots are promoting rookie backup offensive lineman Kody Russey from the practice squad to the 53-man roster in the aftermath of defensive tackle Christian Barmore going on injured reserve.

It would make sense that the Patriots would want to bolster the offensive front, particularly with center David Andrews expected to return after missing the previous two games with a concussion.

Russey is a versatile offensive lineman with the ability to work in at center and guard. So he’s a solid insurance option if the injury bug starts biting in Sunday’s matchup with the New York Jets.

Not having a playmaker like Barmore is going to hurt the defensive front, but the offense could clearly soften the blow if they can keep Mac Jones upright and start putting more points on the board.

That responsibility now falls on the starters up front and Russey to keep a talented Jets defense from wreaking havoc on their second-year quarterback.

Patriots put veteran tackle on IR, bump 3 players to main roster

Patriots make several moves ahead of Week 9 meeting with the Colts

The New England Patriots’ offensive line was dealt a blow on Saturday with the team announcing veteran right tackle Marcus Cannon was being placed on injured reserve.

Cannon had been in concussion protocol leading up to the team’s Week 9 showdown with the Indianapolis Colts. It’s a disappointing turn of events for a Patriots team already playing without center David Andrews (concussion).

That’s going to heap a lot of pressure on Isaiah Wynn to show some consistency and avoid the backbreaking penalties he’s cost the team when on the field.

Along with announcing Cannon to IR, the team signed running back JJ Taylor to the active 53-man roster, while also elevating wideout Lynn Bowden Jr. and offensive lineman Kody Russey from the practice squad.

Taylor receiving a bump is a response to Damien Harris popping up on the injury report as questionable for Sunday’s game with an illness. Meanwhile. Russey provides depth along the offensive front, and Bowden is a gadget playmaker with legitimate big-play ability with the ball in his hands.

The Patriots have already ruled out Andrews, Cannon and DeVante Parker for the game.

Many familiar faces return to practice after initially being cut by Patriots

Multiple preseason fan favorites were back at practice on Wednesday.

There were plenty of familiar faces back at practice after initially being cut by the New England Patriots on Tuesday.

Like the rest of the league, the Patriots went through the tough process of trimming their rosters down to 53 players. On Wednesday, many of the players on the cut list went on waivers with the chance of being claimed by another team.

The Patriots were fortunate that tight end Devin Asiasi was their only former player that got claimed on waivers. So that paved the way for a slew of fan favorites to return, including Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Tre Nixon, J.J. Taylor and LaBryan Ray.

Even veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell was spotted at practice.

There was also a reported “mystery lineman” wearing a No. 68 jersey. Could it be Drew Desjarlais?

The Patriots will lean on some of their practice squad talent to fill roles at certain points throughout the season for a team that currently has more questions than answers.

At the very least, there are several players within the group that showed they were up for the challenge during the preseason slate.
