Big 12 News: Two Baylor Bears running backs opt out of the season

After the Texas Longhorns defeated the Baylor Bears 27-16, their team was dealt another blow. Trestan Ebnar and John Lovett have opted out.

Just 24 hours ago, the Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns met on the field at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns prevailed in this matchup 27-16 to pick up their second conference win and third overall. One of the key factors in the game was Texas limiting the Baylor rushing attack to just 64 yards in the game. Now the Bears offense is going to look a lot different moving forward.

It was reported by Sicem365.com that both Trestan Ebner and John Lovett have opted out of the 2020 season. The Bears suffered their second loss in three games this year. In their opener against Kansas, Ebner returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. He has been one of their most explosive players this year.

The news comes on the heels of Baylor’s 27-16 loss on Saturday to Texas where the co-starters touched the ball a combined 16 times for 85 yards.

Lovett was Baylor’s leading rusher in each of his first three seasons, rushing for 1,795 yards and 17 touchdowns beginning in 2017. Ebner cumulated 844 yards on 164 carries with seven touchdowns and caught 83 passes for 1,047 yards and seven touchdowns over the same span.

Not the greatest news for a Baylor team that has struggled out of the gate. Against Texas the Bears accounted for 316 yards of offense total. They really couldn’t get rolling into the fourth quarter when the Longhorns had the game well in hand. Could be tough sledding for the first year head coach in Dave Aranda.

Texas Football: Longhorns social media buzz ahead of kickoff

Gameday is finally upon us with the Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns set to play at 2:30 CDT. What is the buzz around social media

Gameday is finally upon us with the Baylor Bears visiting the Texas Longhorns. Both teams coming in off a bye, and both coming in off losses in overtime. This isn’t exactly a must win game for Baylor but you can make the argument for it.

For Texas it definitely has the feel of a must win game. While Baylor is in the first year of the Dave Aranda era, the Longhorns are halfway through year four of the Tom Herman Era. Fans are growing restless as it seems the same issues popping up week after week, year after year.

Hopefully a change in uniform can start this team trending in the right direction. The Longhorns will wear white jerseys at home for the first time since 1950. If that is what it  takes for the home team to kickstart a run then so be it.

As Deion Sanders once said “look good, feel good, play good.” You can’t deny that these throwbacks look really good. It is definitely one jersey combination that should be a regular in the rotation, especially if they win wearing them.

Sports superstitions and such, it means a lot to some. Let’s see how it all goes down for the Longhorns on Saturday.

Texas Longhorns vs Baylor: Three defensive key players

We highlighted three key defensive players for the Texas Longhorns. Each one needs to step up and help the team defeat the Baylor Bears.

There was a level of expectation that this defense would be a much improved unit in 2020. A truncated camp, no spring ball and a relatively new staff combined has hindered that a bit.

The defense hasn’t been a unit on the rise as they are currently 64th in scoring defense. With just 76 teams having played up to this point means that Texas has one of the worst defenses in the country. Texas Tech and Kansas are the only two Big 12 teams worse.

As conference play has started up, the defensive numbers have only gotten worse. They are surrendering 47 points per game in Big 12 play. Their defense as a whole is sitting 40th with 400.3 yards per game. In conference play that balloons to 456 yards per game.

For this game against the Baylor Bears, the Longhorns defense led by Chris Ash needs to start playing like a contending defense.

Texas vs Baylor: Updated betting odds per BetMGM

Texas opened as 10-point favorites for Saturday’s matchup against Baylor. Since then, the line is down to 8.5 points per BetMGM.

Texas opened as 10-point favorites at the beginning of the week for Saturday’s matchup against Baylor. Since then, the line has moved in favor of the Bears and is down to 8.5 points per BetMGM.

The Longhorns have been favored in three of their games this season, only covering in one. UTEP fell victim to the 45-point spread in the season opener, while Texas Tech and TCU covered as double-digit underdogs.

In their sole game as an underdog, Texas failed to cover the field goal spread against Oklahoma. The Sooners won by eight points in the fourth overtime.

As to why the line is moving in favor of Baylor?

Jordan Whittington has been the only major injury news on either side of the ball. The redshirt freshman wide receiver is going to miss at least a couple of weeks with a hip flexor.

Off the field issues have been the main focus for the Texas program this week, not the football game. ‘The Eyes of Texas’ controversy has been the main focus of every Tom Herman press conference.

Add in all of the issues happening on the field and it is easy to see as to why the public is keen on the Bears having a solid performance in Austin.

Baylor’s biggest question entering the week has been COVID-19. The Bears had to cancel their Oct. 17 matchup against Oklahoma State after 28 players and 14 staff members tested positive.

Head coach Dave Aranda announced on Monday that Baylor had zero new positive cases for COVID-19 after testing on Sunday. This news put the Bears in a great position to play their first game in nearly a month.

Texas Longhorns open at 10 point favorites per BetMGM

The BetMGM betting odds have been released. The Longhorns are favored to win this matchup provided Baylor meets roster requirements.

After having the last week off, it is time to start focusing on the Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns matchup on Saturday. The Longhorns are coming off a second consecutive loss at the hands of the TCU Horned Frogs and Oklahoma Sooners. The Longhorns look to get back to their winning ways when they face Baylor.

The Bears had the last week off as well for completely different reasons. They were set to host the Oklahoma State Cowboys but the game was postponed due to COVID-19 cases on the team. They reported 28 cases among the players and another 14 within the staff.

Baylor cancelled their opener against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs due to coronavirus cases on the opponents side. Then they scheduled the Houston Cougars team but again that game was cancelled due to an outbreak on the Baylor side. This is the third time the team had to half football activities.

Provided that Baylor does meet the minimum requirements they will travel to Austin. Currently BetMGM has Texas as double-digit favorites. The line currently sits at (-10). The over/under has been set at 64.5. So far this year Texas is 1-3 against the spread while Baylor is 1-1. The only spread that Texas has covered came against UTEP when the Longhorns were favored by 42 when the line opened.

Big 12 Conference: Despite game cancelled due to COVID, Baylor hosted homecoming

The Baylor Bears paused football activities a week ago due to having 42 positive coronavirus cases. That didn’t prevent them from homecoming

The Baylor Bears football team has had quite the season already. They have cancelled two football games and postponed another for December. The football team has paused football activities on three occasions. Despite not playing a game on Saturday against Oklahoma State, which was set to be their homecoming game. They are planning to travel to Austin to play against Texas next Saturday.

The team was set to hold their homecoming ceremonies starting on Oct. 15 according to the Baylor website. The smart play would be to hold off on any homecoming with the football team pausing any activities. However, it doesn’t appear to be how the Bears are handling the situations. Talk about a tone deaf situation. According to their Twitter account, the Bears in fact held ceremonies at McLane Stadium in Waco.

With the climate of college athletics in a pandemic, this was a move that can only be labelled as terrible. Given that the team had 42 positive COVID-19 cases not even a week ago, one can only help but to question their motives with this stunt. The Southeastern Conference recently fined three schools for not adhering to social distancing standards so it will be interesting to see how the Big 12 Conference handles this situation.
