Alabama flips 4-star QB commit from Texas

Alabama landed one of the top quarterbacks in the country on Monday when Jalen Milroe flipped from Texas to the Crimson Tide.

Alabama continued its hot streak on the recruiting trail on Monday night with a surprise commitment from four-star quarterback Jalen Milroe. The Katy (Tex.) native had been committed to the Texas Longhorns for over a year.

The decision from Milroe might have come down to several factors, but one of those factors could be that the No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2022, quarterback Quinn Ewers, committed to Texas over the weekend.

It’s the Crimson Tide’s gain, however, as they didn’t currently have a signal-caller for the class of 2021 after signing top-ranked dual-threat quarterback Bryce Young in 2020.

Milroe took to Twitter to announce the news of the switch:

Lastly, I’ll like to thank the University of Texas’ fans. You all have shown me tremendous support and love since I committed over a year ago. At this time, after taking a lot into consideration, much prayer and speaking with my parents, I have decided to decommit from UT and commit to another University thats shares my visions and aspirations. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Milroe is rated as the nation’s No. 82 overall prospect, No. 4 dual-threat quarterback and No. 10 player from the state of Texas.

With his commitment, Alabama now has 19 total for the class of 2021. The Tide are still rated behind Ohio State for the top overall class, but it’s extremely close. Don’t be surprised if they continue to make a push.

Texas Football Recruiting: Jalen Milroe flips commitment to Alabama

The Texas Longhorns lost a 2021 commit in quarterback Jalen Milroe. Following the Ewers announcement it was speculated that he will move on.

The first wave of news coming off the Quinn Ewers commitment has hit for the Texas Longhorns. It had been widely rumored prior to Ewers’ decision to play for Texas that Jalen Milroe was being pursued by the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Nick Saban and company were hot on the trail for Milroe so it comes to no surprise for many. The quarterback room was becoming increasingly crowded for the future with Casey Thompson, Hudson Card, Ja’Quinden Jackson and Ewers. Milroe was likely to be the odd man out but now gets a new opportunity with Alabama. This would make the third recruit that Texas had its sights on that will play for Saban. The Longhorns already lost out on legacy players James and Tommy Brockermeyer.

Football Scoop’s Zach Barnett weighs in on OU’s dominance over Texas

Football Scoop writer Zach Barnett weighed in on the Oklahoma dominance over the Texas Longhorns. However, it can turn at a moment’s notice.

Since the turn of the century, the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns have met 21 times. The team to the north has owned the rivalry to the tune of a 14-7 record. The Longhorns haven’t been able to win consecutive games since the days of Colt McCoy. Even as great as Vince Young was he only beat OU once. McCoy finished his career 3-1 against them.

So why have the Longhorns have such a bad run against their bitter rivals? Since McCoy left the Longhorns have won just three times combined. Their last victory came on a last second field goal from Cameron Dicker in a 48-45 thriller. Football Scoop writer Zach Barnett recently discussed this in a series of tweets.

The reason OU has had the upper hand over Texas post-2000 is the same reason Ohio State has owned Michigan over roughly the same period—more often than not, OU has a better HC and a better QB.

Setting the HC position aside, Oklahoma just landed the No. 1 DT QB for 2021. Texas has a good commit in Jalen Milroe, but he’ll have to overperform, Williams will have to underperform, or both, to close that gap.

Doesn’t mean that can’t happen, of course. But Texas is starting with a talent deficit at the most important position on the field.

It is impossible to argue against Barnett’s first point about the head coach. Lincoln Riley has won the Big 12 every season since he became the head coach and has a College Football Playoff appearance in each of those seasons. When comparing the resume’s of Riley and Texas head coach Tom Herman, it is clearly Lincoln who wins that battle.

The better quarterback point is really common knowledge. Usually the team with the better quarterback will win the game more often than not. However, he is completely discrediting the current quarterbacks on the roster. While yes there is excitement surrounding Jalen Milroe, he likely won’t see the field for some time.

The number one quarterback from the 2019 recruiting class Spencer Rattler is expected to be the Sooners man for at least the next two seasons before he is NFL Draft eligible. During that time he will battle Sam Ehlinger in his final season. Behind Ehlinger are the number two and three dual threat quarterbacks of the 2020 recruiting cycle.

Milroe will have to overcome Hudson Card and Ja’Quinden Jackson. Both of which will be in the Yurcich system for a season and they will have the leg up on the competition. Card is likely to be groomed as the heir to Ehlinger. Given that Texas quarterbacks usually stay to the end of their eligibility, that would give Milroe one season.

You shouldn’t discount Jackson either. He may be a bit behind in terms of recovering from a slight ACL tear, but when he is on the field Jackson is dynamic. Card is the better passer but Jackson is the bigger threat on the field. While they may be ranked lower than a Rattler or Williams, rankings don’t mean much when you get on the field.

While the Longhorns are the underdogs and rightly so, we will find out if they can turn the tide at the turn of a new decade.

A look at the 2021 recruiting class with Dave Campbell’s rankings

We dove into the 2021 recruiting class with Dave Campbell’s recruiting rankings to see just how good the class looks.

The Texas Longhorns have had a busy recruiting cycle regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic putting some strain on their efforts. The 2020 class wrapped up with the edition of Jahdae Barron joining the class that ranked them eighth overall. The Longhorns finished that class with five players ranked in the top 25 of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football rankings.

The Longhorn were able to walk away with five of the top five recruits in the state according to the list by Campbell. They also added Troy Omeire (32), Jaylen Garth (34) and Logan Parr (37) to round out the top 40. Looking at the 2021 class, the Texas Longhorns already have commitments from the following players in the top 25 of this year’s rankings:

With the level of talent on the radar for the Texas Longhorns and with a new staff doing the recruiting, there is a lot to be excited about. Especially when you consider the future of the program.

Jalen Milroe still 100% committed to the Longhorns

After hiring a new OC, recruiting is picking up for Texas. QB Jalen Milroe is “100% committed” and is “excited” to meet OC Mike Yurcich.

Experiencing a dip in recruiting after the firing of offensive coordinator Tim Beck and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, Texas had a bad string of decommitments. Most of that was because it was not known who was going to be hired to those roles going forward for the Longhorns.

Now that they have hired Mike Yurcich as the offensive coordinator and Chris Ash as the defensive coordinator, recruits have started to reaffirm their commitment to Texas. First, it was 2021 athlete Billy Bowman, now it is 2021 quarterback Jalen Milroe.

According to Mike Roach of 247sports.com, Milroe is “100% committed to Texas,” and is “excited” to meet and talk to new OC Mike Yurcich.

Milroe had been approached and offered by Arkansas earlier this month, adding another team to his long list of offers. He is currently the second-highest-rated recruit in the Texas 2021 class, only trailing ATH Ja’Tavion Sanders.

Yurcich, Ash, and the Longhorns staff will continue to build a great 2021 class. Ranked third in the country right now, the Longhorns are looking at another top 10 recruiting class.

Arkansas making a push for 2021 Texas quarterback commit Milroe

Arkansas recently met with 2021 QB Jalen Milroe. Meeting with CB coach Sam Carter, Milroe was “impressed” with Arkansas after speaking.

According to Richard Davenport of WholeHogSports.com, Arkansas recently met with long-time Texas commit and 2021 four-star quarterback Jalen Milroe. Meeting with Hog’s cornerback coach Sam Carter, Milroe was “impressed” with Arkansas after speaking with him.

He was also informed that the Razorbacks would be offering him a scholarship, extending his list of offers. Recently hiring former Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman, the rebuild of Arkansas has already begun.

Milore had an incredible junior season at Thompson High School in Katy, TX, winning the District 19-6A MVP. Listed as a dual-threat quarterback on 247Sports, Milroe threw for 2,689 yards with 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while also rushing for 378 yards and eight touchdowns. Add in his 4.6 speed and he will be something special if he stays committed to the Longhorns.

Having offers from other big time schools like Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, and Oregon, Milroe is a wanted man. He has been a huge foundation piece for the Longhorns in building the 2021 class. Losing Milroe would be a huge loss for Texas and they must keep him committed.
