Celtics camp invitee Jake Layman finds home for 2022-23 season with Spain’s Bàsquet Manresa

Located in the Spanish city of the same name, Layman will not be the first NBAer to play for the team

Boston Celtics 2022 training camp invitee Jake Layman has found a home for the 2022-23 season. HoopsHype’s Alberto De Roa reported the Maryland alumnus signed with Spain’s Bàsquet Manresa, S.A.D. of the Liga ACB and Basketball Champions Leagues.

Located in the Spanish city of the same name, the team has a history of signing NBA-level players. Serge Ibaka, Derrick Alston and Hall of Famer George Gervin are among those who have donned the uniform in what is considered the highest level of play in Spain and among the best in Europe’s national leagues.

The Layman era with the Celtics was a short one. The Norwood, Massachusetts, native played in two preseason contests.

Over that stretch, Layman logged 4 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assists per game while shooting a forgettable 28.6% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc.

Report: Boston Celtics to cut veteran forward Jake Layman

Layman, a local player out of Norwood, Massachusetts who played his NCAA basketball with the University of Maryland, linked up with the team in the hopes of making Boston’s regular season roster.

Per new reporting from Celtics Blog and Spotrac’s Keith Smith, the Boston Celtics have reportedly waived veteran forward Jake Layman as they work to get their 20-man training camp roster down to the league’s regular season maximum 15-player limit.

Layman, a local player out of Norwood, Massachusetts who played his NCAA basketball with the University of Maryland, linked up with the team in the hopes of making Boston’s regular season roster to provide some depth on the wing. The 6-year NBA veteran has had previous stops with the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves but has yet to stick in the league due to his inconsistent shooting, lack of rebounding for his size, and uninspired defense.

Layman has posted career rates of 4.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game while shooting just 30% from 3.

Celtics reportedly plan to use all 15 roster spots, look internally with Noah Vonleh ‘best positioned’

The team will monitor cut players around the league as well, per reports.

According to recent reporting from the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the Boston Celtics plan to use all 15 roster spots — and expect to fill them internally barring an unexpected player shaking free ahead of the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

While Boston will “continue to keep tabs on cuts” around the NBA, big man Noah Vonleh ” is best positioned to secure one of the final two open spots.” That leaves Justin Jackson, Jake Layman and Mfiondu Kabengele in the running for the other. Kabegele is the least likely to make the full roster given he is already under contract as a two-way player.

Boston could maintain flexibility here and get an extended look at players by using partially guaranteed deals that would allow the team to keep them up to the January league-wide deadline to guarantee contracts.

Boston Celtics release FULL 2022-23 preseason roster

These are all 20 players who will be on the Celtics’ roster heading into preseason.

The Boston Celtics have officially released their full training camp roster for the 2022-23 NBA season, with the team currently at a total of 20 players on it — the maximum allowed in an offseason per league rules.

The league has Celtics preseason exhibition games scheduled against the Charlotte Hornets (Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 pm ET and Friday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 pm ET) and the Toronto Raptors (Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 pm ET and Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 pm ET), with the last of the four friendlies scheduled to take place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as part of the NBA Canada series making a return.

Let’s take a look at all of the players who will be on Boston’s roster at the start of preseason play to kick off the month of October and a return to NBA basketball.

Which camp invitees might actually make the Boston Celtics’ 2022-23 roster?

Bruno Caboclo, Noah Vonleh, Justin Jackson, Denzel Valentine, Jake Layman, and Brodric Thomas all might find themselves a part of the Celtics run at an NBA title this season with the right kind of effort in camp.

Which of the six unguaranteed contracts signed by as many prospective additions to the Boston Celtics roster for the 2022-23 regular season will be converted into a deal that will last longer than opening night? The Celtics brought on six players to compete in training camp for up to three regular roster slots (or perhaps a two way if one opens and they are eligible).

Bruno Caboclo, Noah Vonleh, Justin Jackson, Denzel Valentine, Jake Layman, and Brodric Thomas all might find themselves a part of the Celtics run at an NBA title this season with the right kind of effort in camp. Which of them has the best shot of actually making the team?

The host of the CLNS Media “Winning Plays” podcast Brian Robb recently debated this question with guest Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear the conclusions they came to.

Can Jake Layman make the Boston Celtics’ 2022-23 roster?

Can Layman have a real shot at making the team this season?

The Boston Celtics have some gaps to fill in their rotations for the 2022-23 season, the team finding itself a bit thin in the frontcourt and on the wing heading into training camp for the 2022 offseason. To fix that, the Celtics have brought on six non-guaranteed players to fight for up to three unoccupied regular roster slots.

Big man Bruno Caboclo, center Noah Vonleh, forward Justin Jackson, shooting guard Brodric Thomas, wing Denzel Valentine and now forward Jake Layman are all in the mix to land a spot on a roster with aspirations to contend for an NBA title.

Can Layman, in particular, have a real shot at making the team this season?

The host of the Celtics Blog “Celtics Pod” podcast Adam Taylor recently tried to suss that out for himself on a recent episode; take a look at the clip embedded above to hear the conclusion he came to.

All six players at the Boston Celtics training camp on non-guaranteed deals

Expected to be an intense competition due to the fact that the prospects are competing for a real role with the team, Boston has between one and three roster spots they could be invited to fill.

The Boston Celtics appear to have their 2022 training camp roster set, with a total of six players having been invited to join the players the Celtics already have on their roster as regular or two way players.

The team has a need to help fill minutes for its wing, forward, and center roles this season with a dearth of proven players in the frontcourt compounded by an injury to veteran swingman Danilo Gallinari that is likely to keep him out all of this coming season. Expected to be an intense competition due to the fact that the prospects are competing for a real role with the team, Boston has between one and three roster spots they could be invited to fill.

Let’s take a look at the prospects who will take part in the Celtics’ training camp this season on non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 contracts.

Celtics camp invitee Jake Layman’s 2021-22 NBA highlights

With vet forward Danilo Gallinari likely out for the entire regular season or longer with a torn left ACL, there may be a significant opportunity for the Norwood, Massachusetts, native to play this season if he stands out at camp.

With the news Monday that veteran forward Jake Layman will join the team for training camp later this month, the Boston Celtics are assured of at least one serious competition for a roster spot.

The former Timberwolves big man will compete with Noah Vonleh, Bruno Caboclo, Denzel Valentine, Justin Jackson and Mfiondu Kabengele to make the Celtics’ roster. With veteran forward Danilo Gallinari likely out for the regular season or longer with a torn left ACL, there may be a significant opportunity for the Norwood, Massachusetts, native to play this season if he stands out at camp.

Report: Vet forward Jake Layman to compete for roster spot at Boston Celtics’ training camp

The Maryland product is one of several such players hoping to find a home with the Celtics in training camp for the coming season.

The looming battle for a roster spot with the Boston Celtics at their training camp for the 2022-23 NBA season may have just gotten a little more intense. CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning reports six-year veteran forward Jake Layman will join the team on a camp deal.

Layman, a former University of Maryland player who was selected by the Orlando Magic with the 47th pick of the 2016 NBA draft, played the first three seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before being dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Bojan Dubljevic in 2019.

Layman has struggled to put it together at both stops to date with career averages of 4.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per game, but the 6-foot-8, 28-year-old forward has flirted with breaking through.

Specifically, in his first season in Minnesota, Layman shot 33.3% from deep and put up a career-high 9.1 points per game.

The Norwood, Massachusetts, native will have to approximate play of at least that level to have a realistic shot at making Boston’s roster, but with a baked-in narrative of hometown guy makes good there for the taking, it’ll be a fun preseason subplot to keep tabs on.

ESPN includes Charlotte Hornets in pair of projected trade deadline deals

While not blockbuster deals, ESPN included the Hornets in a pair of smaller trades that could outline how Charlotte gets involved at the trade deadline.

As one of the surprise teams of the season, the Charlotte Hornets find themselves in the thick of the playoff race in the Eastern Conference due, in part, to rookie LaMelo Ball.

The addition of Gordon Hayward, along with the continued strong play of incumbents Terry Rozier, Devonte’ Graham, Malik Monk, has led to the Hornets hovering around .500 amid a group of teams in the bottom half of the playoff race.

As one of only a few teams with cap space available and apparent areas of need on the roster, the Hornets figure to be one of the teams involved in deals at the trade deadline. ESPN’s Bobby Marks and Kevin Pelton each suggested trades in a piece on Wednesday that involved the Hornets as third teams in deals that land them potential impact pieces and extra draft capital.

In Marks’ trade, the Hornets are the facilitator in a three-team deal with

Due to roster restrictions, the Timberwolves would not be able to take back three players for one, allowing the Hornets to step in and land a bench option.

Jake Layman is a fifth-year forward that would provide Charlotte depth on the wing. In 15 minutes per game across 23 games for Minnesota this season, he has averaged 6.1 points per game on 31.8% shooting from 3-point range.

Pelton’s trade follows a similar outline, though with different teams and players.

In this deal, the Hornets step in to acquire Terrance Ferguson due to a bit of good fortune. In this deal, the Clippers are not looking to acquire a young guard and the Thunder can not reacquire him, leaving the Hornets with the chance to step in and reap the benefits.

After showing flashes with the Thunder over three seasons, Ferguson has played nine games with the Sixers this season. At the cost of literally nothing, it would be a low-risk move for Charlotte to acquire the guard.

While these two deals may not be the exact ones that will play out, it gives an archetype of how the Hornets can be involved at the deadline and net an asset for free in the coming weeks.
