12 NFL free agents with ties to the new Lions regime that should interest Detroit

Here are some choice unrestricted free agents with ties to the new Lions regime

Detroit’s radical franchise overhaul to the front office and coaching staff gives the Lions a rare chance to remake the roster, too. The new faces in charge of personnel decisions have different ties to different NFL teams they can exploit this offseason to help in the remake, too.

The Brad Holmes/Dan Campbell regime has direct recent ties to four NFL teams. Holmes, the new GM, comes from the Los Angeles Rams. So does assistant GM Ray Agnew.

New head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn both worked for the New Orleans Saints for several seasons together before coming to Detroit.

Senior personal executive John Dorsey was the GM of the Cleveland Browns in 2018-2019 before serving as a consultant in 2020. New offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn was the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers for the last four seasons.

That’s some pretty intimate familiarity and personal ties to four other NFL organizations who will have players leaving this offseason. Here are some choice unrestricted free agents from those teams and how they might be appealing to the amalgamation of the new regime in Detroit.

Chargers safety Alohi Gilman set for expanded role in season finale

Audition time for the Chargers’ sixth-round pick.

The Chargers and Chiefs have nothing to play for in the season finale this Sunday, which makes this a great opportunity for players that haven’t seen the field that much to finally get some reps.

Among the crop that could get an expanded role this weekend is rookie safety Alohi Gilman.

Rayshawn Jenkins is likely going to be out and today, defensive coordinator Gus Bradley implied that his backup, Jahleel Addae, is not going to play in Week 17. Therefore, Gilman, as well as Jaylen Watkins, will get a good chunk of playing time.

Gilman, the sixth-round pick, has primarily been used on special teams this season. Last weekend against the Broncos when Jenkins left, he was on the field in dime packages, playing a total of 22 snaps.

This weekend, the former Notre Dame product will likely log snaps at both strong safety and dime linebacker.

Gilman was a player that always flashed in college and when he was down in Mobile, AL for the Senior Bowl. At his best in the underneath areas, he showed an understanding of pursuit angles and great instincts against the run and in zone coverage.

Given the inconsistent production from the safety position, this will be the perfect opportunity for Gilman to prove that he’s worth receiving more playing time next season. His combination of physicality and all-out effort could carve out a role.

How Chargers will fill slot cornerback void

Coach Anthony Lynn is considering three players.

The Chargers have a void to fill, at least for now.

After trading Desmond King to the Titans on Monday, Los Angeles now finds themselves needing to fill the temporary void at the slot cornerback position.

At Monday’s media availability, coach Anthony Lynn started out by saying “Sometimes players need a fresh start. His time was up here and I wish him all the best,” when giving his thoughts on the trade

With King out, Lynn said he’s considering TeVaughn Campbell, Nasir Adderley and Jahleel Addae for starting slot duties.

Campbell started in place of King this past weekend, where he had a solid outing with the exception of the pass interference call and blown assignment on the final drive.

Addae was signed a couple of weeks ago to provide versatility. While he’s primarily played safety, he can play inside if need be. The same applies for Adderley, whose natural position is free safety, but has some experience at cornerback.

Chris Harris Jr. is the one who mans the starting spot, but he remains on the injured reserve with a foot injury, and he will continue to be sidelined for at least a couple of more weeks.

Chargers place CB Chris Harris, Jr. on injured reserve, add safety Jahleel Addae to active roster

The four-time Pro Bowler is headed to the IR.

The Chargers will be without their starting slot cornerback for the next four to six weeks.

Chris Harris Jr. suffered a foot injury during Los Angeles’ Week 3 loss to the Panthers. Fortunately for L.A., Harris will suit up for them again in 2020 as this injury is not considered season-ending.

Harris was signed this past offseason after spending the first nine years of his career with the Broncos where he earned four trips to the Pro Bowl.

Through the first three games with the Bolts, Harris has totaled 15 tackles and one pass deflection while playing on nearly 93% of the defensive snaps.

With Harris out, Desmond King will likely fill his void. King’s playing time has taken a toll with Harris getting the majority of the snaps in the slot.

In correspondence, the Chargers added safety Jahleel Addae to the active roster.

Chargers sign safety Jahleel Addae to practice squad

The Los Angeles Chargers are bringing back a familiar face.

The Los Angeles Chargers have signed safety Jahleel Addae to their practice squad.

Addae spent his first six seasons with the Chargers after signing with the team as an undrafted rookie out of Central Michigan in 2013. In six seasons with the Bolts, he compiled 372 tackles, 21 passes defensed, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions.

Addae was released by L.A. last offseason, and was then signed by the Texans afterwards, where he started three games. In 16 contests, he amassed 45 tackles, three passes defensed and two interceptions.

The decision to bring back Addae comes after Rayshawn Jenkins suffered an injury last Sunday against the Chiefs, and the playing time this weekend for Desmond King looms after he voiced his displeasure in his playing time from the past couple of weeks.

Addae supplies depth at both safety positions, but he is geared more for the strong safety spot.

Chargers bringing in safety Jahleel Addae for visit

The Los Angeles Chargers team could be eyeing a reunion with safety Jahleel Addae.

The Chargers are looking to bring back a familiar face.

According to Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, safety Jahleel Addae is visiting Los Angeles.

Coach Anthony Lynn was asked at Monday’s availability to see if it was true, and he confirmed, adding that he will be visiting at some point this week.

The decision to bring Addae in for a visit comes after Rayshawn Jenkins left Sunday’s game with an injury, and defensive back Desmond King voiced his displeasure with his lack of playing time.

Los Angeles is already without star safety Derwin James, who was placed on the injured before the regular season.

L.A. could be seeking to sign Addae to a short-term deal for depth purposes, and familiarity is key when it comes to their evaluation process.

Addae spent six seasons with the Bolts before being released last offseason. He spent last season with the Texans, posting 45 tackles and two interceptions

Report: Mutual interest between Chargers, safety Jahleel Addae

The Chargers could be eyeing a reunion with Jahleel Addae.

The Chargers could possibly bring back a familiar face.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, there’s mutual interest between Los Angeles and safety Jahleel Addae.

This comes after star safety Derwin James injured his meniscus, leaving his 2020 campaign in jeopardy.

Addae spent six seasons with the Bolts before being released last offseason, where he played the strong safety position with the exception of his last year with the team, as he played free safety.

Addae spent last season with the Texans, posting 45 tackles and two interceptions.

The Chargers could go about filling the void in a variety of ways, including utilizing their in-house options. But the team could be eyeing a reunion with Addae to do so.

We will update as more information rolls out.

The Houston Texans have announced that safety Jahleel Addae and tight end Jordan Akins have been downgraded to out versus the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC divisional at Arrowhead Stadium.

Addae was originally questionable with a knee while Akins was questionable with a hamstring.

The Texans will have to rely on safeties A.J. Moore and Mike Adams to fill the void. They are already down a starting safety with Tashaun Gipson on injured reserve with a transverse process fracture in his back.

Second-year tight end Jordan Thomas has an opportunity to step up with Akins out. Darren Fells, the other tight end, is also questionable.
