Cowboys visit with former Chargers, Colts OL Sam Tevi

After 44 starts with the Chargers, Tevi signed with Indianapolis, but a torn ACL sidelined him for 2021; he met with Dallas this week. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys continue to explore veteran options in free agency, even in the final days leading up to the draft.

Offensive tackle Sam Tevi visited with Dallas staffers this week, according to several reports. Tevi was a sixth-round draft pick out of Utah and spent four seasons with the Chargers, beginning in 2017. He made 44 starts in 58 game appearances with the club.

He signed a one-year deal with the Colts in March 2021 before suffering a torn ACL in the preseason. He was placed on injured reserve in late August.

Tevi is a Texas native, having grown up in the Metroplex suburb of Euless. And while the Cowboys ostensibly already have starting tackles in Tyron Smith and Terence Steele, they may be considering Tevi purely as depth or in a swing tackle role.

That is, if his ACL is healed or at least on track. Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News categorized Tevi’s visit in Dallas as “more of a medical check-in” and said that “no deal is imminent,” at least as of Friday evening.

With the 24th overall pick in the upcoming draft, the Cowboys are thought to be in the market for a young offensive line prospect. But Tevi’s visit demonstrates that the front office may not rely on the college ranks to fill all of their roster’s holes.

Tackle La’el Collins was cut by Dallas this offseason; he signed a new contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. Thirty-six-year-old tackle Ty Nsekhe is still an available free agent. Guard Connor Williams left for Miami in March.

7 pending free agents the Colts should let walk

With free agency just over a month away, here are 7 players the Colts should let walk.

The Indianapolis Colts are just over a month away from the new league year opening, which means they’ll have their chances to make moves in free agency.

With a solid standing in the salary-cap department, the Colts can make as many moves as they want. It’s unlikely they will make splash additions, though, even if general manager Chris Ballard readjusts his process a bit when it comes to free agency.

The Colts have a number of players who held impactful roles set to hit the market when the middle of March arrives. We previously took a look at 12 pending free agents they should consider re-signing.

Now, it’s time to take a look at the players the Colts should let walk. This doesn’t mean the team should completely abandon these players but it might be best for them to test the market first in case there is a cheaper, younger and better alternative.

This list won’t include every player that the Colts shouldn’t bring back but instead, we’ll focus on the bigger names set to hit the market.

Here are seven pending free agents the Colts should let walk in 2022:

Colts activate LG Quenton Nelson from COVID-19 list

Colts activate LG Quenton Nelson from the COVID-19 list, place OT Sam Tevi on IR.

The Indianapolis Colts activated left guard Quenton Nelson from the reserve/COVID-19 list and placed offensive tackle Sam Tevi on the injured reserve list.

This was to be expected after head coach Frank Reich told the media that Nelson would be activated. Since he was a close contact and not an actual positive test for COVID-19, he was able to return quicker than left tackle Eric Fisher, who did test positive and was placed on the list at the same time as Nelson.

With Nelson back on the active roster, he will be looking to work his way back from foot surgery that kept him off the field for three weeks during training camp and the preseason.

Tevi tore his ACL and MCL during the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions. His season is over and that is confirmed by the fact that he was placed on the injured reserve list before the final cuts are made.

Colts’ Sam Tevi out for season with torn ACL

Colts OT Sam Tevi will miss the 2021 season due to a torn ACL.

Indianapolis Colts offensive tackle Sam Tevi suffered a torn ACL during the preseason finale against the Detroit Lions and is out for the season, first reported by Mike Wells of ESPN.

Tevi suffered his injury late during the preseason finale and had to be carted off the field. It was reported that Tevi has a torn ACL, which will likely land him on the injured reserve list and keep him out for the rest of the season.

Tevi got the first crack at competing for the starting left tackle role while Eric Fisher rehabs from a torn Achilles. However, Tevi lost that role halfway through training camp and wound playing more as the backup right tackle for the majority of the preseason.

With Tevi out of the picture, the Colts are likely to lean on Julién Davenport and Will Holden to be the left tackles while Fisher recovers from Achilles rehab and a positive COVID-19 test.

This may also give the Colts a chance to see what rookie seventh-round pick Will Fries has as a depth piece.

The Colts are also dealing with injuries to rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger, who is expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained ACL, along with wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, who is out indefinitely with a reported upper back/neck injury.

5 takeaways from Colts’ preseason win over Lions

Takeaways from the Colts’ preseason finale.

The Indianapolis Colts’ final preseason game played like the fourth game on the previous preseason schedule because both teams didn’t play a majority of their starters.

The backend of the roster showed they had some fight as they had to make another comeback for the third week in a row to leave with the win. Indianapolis finished undefeated in the preseason for the first time since 1994.

There wasn’t much that will carry into the regular season but there are some things to consider as Chris Ballard figures out his final 53-man roster.

Here are five takeaways from the preseason finale:

6 Colts on the roster bubble entering preseason finale

These Colts are on the roster bubble entering the preseason finale.

With the Indianapolis Colts concluding training camp 2021 at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, they have one final preseason game to go against the Detroit Lions.

More importantly, the team has one more opportunity for fringe roster players to impress and earn a role going forward, be that on the active roster or the practice squad.

Head coach Frank Reich said Wednesday that the team will not play starters this game, which provides even more opportunity and snaps for roster bubble players.

Here, we’ll take a look at five players who are on the bubble entering the preseason finale:

Studs and duds from Colts’ preseason win over Vikings

Studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason Week 2 win over the Vikings.

The Indianapolis Colts came away with a 12-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings but given that this is the preseason, the focus is more on individual performances rather than the outcome of the game.

Despite the offense struggling to find the end zone, there were still a few encouraging players from Saturday night’s win. On the flip side, there were also some players who didn’t quite live up to expectations.

Here are the studs and duds from the Colts’ preseason win over the Vikings:

7 Colts whose jobs are in jeopardy in 2021

Which jobs are in jeopardy this offseason?

The Indianapolis Colts have gotten through the 2021 NFL draft and are now focused on the process of trimming down the roster to 53 players over the next few months.

The majority of those decisions won’t be impacted until training camp begins. The Colts have their offseason workouts but the jobs are hardly secured then. Though most starting jobs are already locked up, there are some players on the current roster who may be on notice following the offseason moves.

Here are seven Colts whose jobs are in jeopardy this offseason:

Winners and losers from Colts’ 2021 draft

Who are the winners and losers after the 2021 draft?

The Indianapolis Colts are rounding out their roster with a few undrafted rookie free agents following their seven-player class in the 2021 NFL draft.

You can follow our undrafted free agent tracker before they announce the signings, but the draft class should have a pretty big impact on the roster and a number of the players that were already there.

Though the players haven’t stepped on the NFL field yet, their selections could provide some players to have a cloudy future with the team. Conversely, a lack of a pick at a certain position could help boost another player’s stock into a larger role.

Here are the winners and losers from the Colts’ 2021 draft class:

Colts select OL Will Fries: How he fits with Indy

How does Will Fries fit with the team?

To round out their crop, the Indianapolis Colts finally took an offensive tackle with the No. 248 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft arriving in the form of Penn State’s Will Fries.

While many expected this position to be the team’s first pick in the draft, it actually turns out to be their last.

Fries brings that most important trait needed in any lineman brought into Indianapolis, position versatility. Fries was a four-year starter for the Nittany Lions, starting multiple games at four of the five positions on the line and even one start as a blocking tight end. The only notable exception being at center.

While tape may show far from a polished product, rarely is any seventh-rounder without a few flaws, the Colts are getting a tough and durable worker in Fries who’s gone up against some of the toughest competition in college football playing in the Big Ten.

Below average arm length at just under 33 inches and his athletic and speed limitations including a 5.38 in the 40-yard dash, Fries might be better suited to playing inside at the pro level. Interior play would help bring out the most in what Fries does well with his effort, tenacity, solid hand usage and balance to even the odds against top interior rushers.

As far as projection for the seventh-rounder, the expectation would be that his versatility would prime him to contribute as a depth option across the line, most importantly as a swing tackle candidate if need be. Based on comments made by Colts brass, one would expect Sam Tevi to be the presumed starter at left tackle with Julie’n Davenport also competing for the job.

Fries will have to battle it out with the likes of Chris Reed, Danny Pinter, and Joey Hunt for one of the remaining likely three to four final depth spots in training camp.
