Chet Holmgren, Jaden Ivey among 14 rookies to sign with Nike

Holmgren and Ivey were among 14 rookies to sign endorsement contracts with the Swoosh.

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chet Holmgren and Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey on Friday were among 14 rookies to sign endorsement contracts with Nike, the apparel company announced.

Holmgren and Ivey, as top-five picks, were viewed as top targets for apparel companies as each player projects to have a bright future in the NBA. They both have worn Nike shoes in the past and will continue to do so after opting to sign with the Swoosh.

Nike had a busy signing period with the incoming rookie class after coming to terms with 12 other first-year players. They signed 12 first-round picks and two second-round picks for the 2022-23 season after a relatively quiet class over the past few years because of the pandemic.

Here are the 14 rookies that signed with Nike this season.

Celtics Lab 148: Getting to know Paolo Banchero and other high-impact 2022-23 rookies with Cody Taylor

This week, we talk about the new faces entering the league like Keegan Murray, Jaden Ivey, and Bennedict Mathurin who might surprise the Celtics a bit in their new homes around the league.

The Boston Celtics passed with flying colors the first test of their 2022-23 campaign on opening night against the Philadelphia 76ers. But they immediately headed to Florida, where they will have another challenge against the Miami Heat.

After that, the intensity level will drop. However, with potential Rookie of the Year candidate Paolo Banchero joining EuroLeague sensation Franz Wagner and a talented supporting cast, the Magic will likely no longer be a “gimme” win for Boston or the rest of the league.

To talk about the new faces entering the league, including Keegan Murray, Jaden Ivey and Bennedict Mathurin, who might surprise the Celtics a bit in their new homes around the league, we brought on Rookie Wire’s Cody Taylor to get us up to speed on which rookie players Boston and their fans ought to have on their radar for 2022-23.

2022 NBA draft: 10 bold rookie predictions for the 2022-23 season

Rookie Wire decided to put on our thinking caps and predict the future with 10 bold predictions for the upcoming season.

The 2022-23 regular season officially tipped off in the NBA on Tuesday as four teams hit the court to much fanfare in front of a national audience on TNT.

The Golden State Warriors proved to be the team to beat as defending champions after making easy work of the Los Angeles Lakers. Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics showed little signs of any inner turmoil with an impressive win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Of course, there will be plenty of other storylines to follow in each conference as the season progresses. Several teams figure to be in the playoff picture after a busy offseason while others will continue to develop and progress in their respective rebuilding efforts.

The incoming rookie class also figures to be worth monitoring, as well.

The group was dealt an unfortunate injury to No. 2 pick Chet Holmgren, who will miss the entire season, but the class figures to be entertaining to watch. Some players have already put themselves on the map after a strong exhibition run.

Rookie Wire decided to put on our thinking caps and predict the future. We made 10 bold predictions for the class and offered an opinion on what we might see this season. To make this exercise fun, we will come back at the end of the season and see how we did.

Here is how we fared last season. We didn’t do particularly well.

Pistons’ Jaden Ivey eager to get to work with Cade Cunningham

Ivey figures to play a large role this season with the Pistons and is eager to get to work with Cunningham.

Jaden Ivey figures to play a large role this season with the Detroit Pistons and is eager to get to work with backcourt mate Cade Cunningham on the floor.

The Pistons took Ivey to bolster their backcourt, and the fifth pick could even start early. While Cunningham flourished as a floor general and rebounder last year, Ivey gives the team a different look as an electric guard that can be dynamic on offense.

The combination of Ivey and Cunningham figures to be a handful for opposing teams. They will present plenty of problems on both ends of the floor and Ivey can’t wait to see what they can do, according to Omari Sankofa of the Detroit Free Press.

The addition of Ivey gives the Pistons another young player to build around. In addition to Cunningham, Saddiq Bey, Isaiah Stewart and others took a step in their development last year with strong performances.

The Pistons went out and acquired Bojan Bogdanovic from the Utah Jazz last week, a move that figures to add shooting at the wing position. The acquisition, plus additional internal improvement, should help the Pistons compete for a play-in spot or more.

The future projects to be bright in Detroit; Ivey and Cunningham are a huge part of that plan. Fans only have to wait a little bit longer to see them on the court together, which should be quite entertaining to watch.

Detroit tips off its preseason schedule on Oct. 4.

The Pistons, by trading for Bojan Bogdanovic, prove they’re no longer tanking — and it’s the right call

Don’t expect to see the Pistons tank for Victor Wembanyama.

There comes a time in every rebuilding organization’s timeline when they decide they are no longer selling assets but instead buying.

That is exactly what the Detroit Pistons did by trading for Bojan Bogdanovic, a valuable 6-foot-7 forward who has averaged at least 17.0 points per game in four consecutive seasons, from the Jazz.

This move represented a passing of the torch, in some ways. Utah is very obviously tanking after trading away Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert (as well as Patrick Beverley, Royce O’Neale, and now Bogdanovic). Meanwhile, it also means that Detroit (despite trading Jerami Grant) is graduating into a new chapter of its organizational reconstruction.

Detroit, however, was undoubtedly a surprising destination for Bogdanovic.

Before becoming the Pistons general manager, Troy Weaver was a longtime executive for the Thunder. During his time with the organization, he was the right-hand man for Oklahoma City’s Sam Presti. The Thunder are a team that knows a thing or two about the art of tanking.

Since taking over the front office, Weaver has implemented similar strategies in Detroit. Early in Weaver’s tenure, the Pistons bought out Blake Griffin and traded Christian Wood, Luke Kennard, and Derrick Rose.

Dan Wetzel described it as one of the all-time great tank jobs in NBA history (via Yahoo):

“Weaver took over as general manager last offseason, inheriting a going-nowhere, veteran-laden roster. Rather than continue to tread water or wait to bottom out in the standings, he proceeded to trade away nearly everyone.”

Every single player who was on Detroit’s roster in 2019-20 was gone by September 2021.

The losing seasons netted them rising star Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. They selected Jaden Ivey, another potential star, this year.

Cunningham and Ivey are joined by several other recent first-rounders including Saddiq Bey, Jalen Duren, Isaiah Stewart, Marvin Bagley III, Killian Hayes, and (most recently) Kevin Knox.

Now, however, Detroit has indicated that they are no longer prioritizing getting the highest draft pick possible by finishing at the bottom of the standings.

Instead, as noted by The Athletic’s James Edwards, they want to “make progress in the win column” this season.

Bogdanovic was an instrumental player on a team that had the best record in the NBA during the 2020-21 season. He has already played in eight playoff series during his NBA career thus far.

Nerlens Noel, the defensive-oriented big man who they also acquired from the Knicks this off-season, has made the playoffs multiple times since turning pro as well.

Even though Detroit isn’t going to contend to make the Eastern Conference Finals this year, they’re likely no longer going to be in the race for the No. 1 overall pick.

Instead, it’s more likely they feel they have their young core in place and want them to experience winning. Like the Grizzlies in 2021 and the Cavs and Timberwolves last season, this is a young team that could exceed their expectations and perhaps they can even make the playoffs.

NBA 2K23: Ratings revealed for 5 highest-ranked rookie players

The ratings of five rookie players have been unveiled ahead of the launch of NBA 2K23 on Friday.

2K Sports on Tuesday offered a glimpse of the first batch of ratings for NBA 2K23 with the incoming class of rookies among those revealed prior to the official launch on Friday.

The latest iteration of the popular video game will feature Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker on the cover of most editions. Hall of Famer Michael Jordan will grace the cover of two special versions while legends Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi will be on the “WNBA” edition.

J. Cole will serve as the cover star on the “DREAMER” edition.

The ratings of several players have been released recently, while some categories, such as the top shooters and dunkers, were also unveiled. The ratings for each rookie will be known on Friday when the game is live on all platforms.

Rookie Wire took a look at the five highest-rated first-year players.

Banchero, Holmgren receive the most love in ESPN’s offseason survey

Banchero and Holmgren were voted as having the brightest futures of the rookie class in a recent poll conducted by ESPN.

Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero and Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chet Holmgren were voted as having the brightest futures of the rookie class in a recent poll conducted by ESPN.

The panel included 15 coaches, scouts and executives as the group voted on a variety of offseason topics, including the winners and losers of free agency, the incoming rookies and other related items. Personnel from each conference took part in the survey.

Among the topics, the voters were asked to select the rookie they thought would be the best player in five years. Of the 15 individuals polled, Banchero and Holmgren each received six votes apiece.

  1. Paolo Banchero, Orlando Magic: 6 votes
  2. Chet Holmgren, Oklahoma City Thunder: 6 votes
  3. Jaden Ivey, Detroit Pistons: 2 votes
  4. Keegan Murray, Sacramento Kings: 1 vote

As the top two picks in the draft, Banchero and Holmgren each had tremendous outings in summer league and look ready for the NBA. Unfortunately, Holmgren will miss the 2022-23 season after suffering a foot injury, so his debut will be delayed.

Ivey was limited to 38 minutes in summer league due to an ankle injury but dazzled during that time on the court. Murray was named Most Valuable Player of the Las Vegas Summer League and looked to be the top rookie in the event.

The initial voting results offered a quick glance at how some NBA personnel view the rookie class. With one month left in the offseason, the poll should create some interesting dialogue on how this season and beyond could play out on the court.

Pistons’ Jaden Ivey pulled up to play in Rico Hines run

Ivey was among the NBA players that participated in a recent private run hosted by Rico Hines.

Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey was among the NBA players that participated in a recent private run hosted by Rico Hines on the campus of UCLA.

Ivey was seen playing in the pick-up game along with Pistons teammate Marvin Bagley III and Toronto Raptors players Malachi Flynn and Dalano Banton. Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry and Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young played in other games.

Hines, who is the player development coach of the Raptors, hosts the games each summer. They often feature some of the top players in the league and present some exciting highlights of the guys getting some work in on the court.

After dealing with a minor ankle injury in summer league, Ivey looks fully healthy and ready for the start of training camp next month. He has trained quite a bit in the Los Angeles area and even hit the gym recently with Russell Westbrook.

Ivey enters the 2022-23 season with high expectations as the fifth pick. He is projected to have a large role with the Pistons, who many believe will take the next step in their rebuild. He was even ranked as the 25th-best shooting guard heading into the season.

The Pistons begin their preseason schedule on Oct. 4.

NBA Rookie of the Year: The updated odds after the Chet Holmgren injury

The NBA Rookie of the Year odds saw a drastic change on Thursday following the injury news to Chet Holmgren.

Teams in the NBA will not begin training camp for the 2022-23 season for another month, but the Rookie of the Year odds underwent a drastic change after a key injury.

Of course, the Oklahoma City Thunder announced on Thursday that Chet Holmgren will miss the season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his right foot. The setback will require surgery, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

As the second pick, Holmgren was the subject of enormous expectations this season. He was viewed as a key addition to the Thunder and was a Rookie of the Year candidate. In fact, Holmgren had the third-best odds (plus-400) of winning the award prior to summer league.

With Holmgren out for the season, Tipico Sportsbook released an updated set of odds for the rookie class. There were several changes to the odds, not only accounting for the injury to Holmgren but also for how each player performed in summer league and other factors.

Here are the updated odds for the 2022-23 NBA Rookie of the Year race.

Pistons’ Jaden Ivey recently hit the gym with Russell Westbrook

Ivey was pictured in the gym with Lakers guard Russell Westbrook during an offseason workout session.

Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey was photographed in the gym with Los Angeles Lakers guard Russell Westbrook during an offseason workout session on Monday.

The two players hit the court in California, where Ivey has spent much of the offseason training time. Reports have indicated he is healthy again after an ankle injury limited him to 38 minutes in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Working with Westbrook was likely a great opportunity for Ivey to pull some knowledge and other tips from an established player. Ivey often said he modeled his game after Westbrook as the two have similar playing styles with their athleticism and ability to score.

Ivey enters the 2022-23 season with high expectations as the fifth pick. He is projected to have a large role with the Pistons, who many believe will take the next step in their rebuild. He was even ranked as the 25th-best shooting guard heading into the season.

He looked electric on the court during his limited run in Las Vegas and should fit very well next to Cade Cunningham & Co. He looks to be a player that will have a smooth transition to the NBA, which figures to help the Pistons show improvement on the court.

The Pistons begin their preseason schedule on Oct. 4.
