Jaden Ivey: 4th Pistons rookie with 30-point game since Grant Hill

Ivey on Tuesday erupted with a career performance and joined Hall of Famer Grant Hill in some team history in the process.

Detroit Pistons rookie Jaden Ivey on Tuesday erupted with a career performance and joined Hall of Famer Grant Hill in some team history in the process.

Ivey produced 30 points, five assists, four rebounds and one steal in nearly 33 minutes of work in a 126-111 loss to the Utah Jazz. He shot 10-of-14 from the field and 8-of-11 from the free-throw line as the Pistons dropped to 8-25 on the season.

The fifth pick is just the fourth Pistons rookie since Grant Hill in 1995 with a 30-point game and the 20th overall in team history. He also became just the fourth rookie to score 30 points in a game this season.

“I’m just trying to, every game, improve whether it is defensively or offensively,” Ivey said after the game. “Just playing with my energy, speed and just try to do what I can do to help this team. I feel like, as a team, we just have to collectively stay focused together.”

Ivey appears to be breaking out of a recent shooting slump.

Since missing three games with knee soreness, Ivey was averaging 11.5 points, 3.5 assists and three rebounds on 35.2% shooting from the field. He is shooting 68% from the field over his last two games, averaging 24.5 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal.

The 20-year-old has been electric on the court this season and is emerging as a cornerstone player for the team. His latest performance on Tuesday showed that he has the potential to take over games and lead the team on a nightly basis.

Rookie Power Rankings: Paolo Banchero claims the top spot again

Rookie Wire took a look at the top first-year players over the last two weeks of the 2022-23 season.

After some bumps and bruises, the top of the current rookie class looks back on track and performing at a high level over the past two weeks.

Several high draft picks recently experienced some minor setbacks with injury or on-court struggles, but appear to have gotten back on track and are impressing once again. Elsewhere, others selected later in the draft are also putting up strong performances.

To make sense of it all, we took a look at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the latest edition of the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but, rather, to illustrate the best players week to week.

Pistons’ Jaden Ivey returns from injury with clutch play in OT win

Ivey returned from a three-game absence and had some clutch plays down the stretch to help the Pistons beat the Mavericks in overtime.

Jaden Ivey on Thursday returned from a three-game absence and had some clutch plays down the stretch to help the Detroit Pistons defeat the Dallas Mavericks in overtime.

Ivey produced 16 points, six assists, three rebounds and one steal in the 131-125 win at home. He went 6-of-15 from the field, including 2-of-7 from 3-point range, in 35 minutes of work off the bench as the Pistons snapped a three-game losing streak.

The fifth pick scored five points alone in overtime and had a key 3-pointer with 1:59 left to give the Pistons the lead. He also had a steal in the closing seconds that sealed the win for the Pistons.

Those late-game situations, Dwane Casey said, are key for the team.

It should magnify their sense of urgency, how important each possession is. The way Dallas was blitzing down the stretch, we came to the ball, moved the basketball out of those blitzes safely and got good looks and good shots. All of those things we talk about, we go through in shootaround but nothing magnifies it like an overtime game.

Ivey missed the last three games due to right knee soreness. Casey opted to bring him off of the bench for the first time this season after he had progressed in his recovery. He responded by giving the team a boost of energy and effort in the second unit.

Experiencing those clutch situations will be key for players like Ivey as the pressure is amplified with the game on the line. He is still learning to make the right plays in those scenarios, Casey said, but games like Thursday will go a long way for his development.

Ivey is emerging as a cornerstone player for the Pistons and is having a strong rookie campaign through the first quarter of the season. With Ivey in the fold, the future looks to be bright in Detroit.

The rookie class has had impressive moments during the first quarter of the 2022-23 season. Several players have begun to separate themselves from the draft class pack.

To make sense of it all, we took a look at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the latest edition of the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but, rather, to illustrate the best players week to week.

Jaden Ivey joins Grant Hill, others in Pistons rookie history

Ivey helped the Pistons to a win on the road over the Jazz and joined the likes of Isiah Thomas and Grant Hill in some team history.

Jaden Ivey helped the Detroit Pistons to a win on the road over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday and joined Isiah Thomas and Grant Hill in the team history book in the process.

Ivey produced 16 points, six assists, five rebounds and one steal in the 125-116 victory. He scored 12 points in the first half and finished shooting 5-of-13 overall from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line in 32 minutes of work.

The fifth pick became the fifth-fastest rookie in team history to reach 300 career points. He did so in 19 games, trailing only Kelly Tripuka (18), Bailey Howell (18), Grant Hill (15) and Isiah Thomas (14).

Ivey has emerged as a key player for the Pistons this season as the team deals with injuries to Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey and Isaiah Stewart. He has performed at a high level and is seemingly improving on a nightly basis.

He is also establishing himself as one of the top first-year players.

Ivey is averaging 16.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.1 steals on 42.1% shooting from the field. He leads the rookie class in assists and is second in steals and third in scoring. He also has the most double-digit-scoring games with 17.

Behind a quick start and the opportunity to log heavy minutes, Ivey should continue to produce each game and will likely find himself next to some Pistons greats throughout the year.

Rookie Power Rankings: Paolo Banchero, Bennedict Mathurin pace the class

Rookie Wire took a look at the top first-year players over the last two weeks of the 2022-23 season.

Through the first four weeks of the NBA season, the rookie class has put forth some tremendous performances. Several players stand out above the rest in the early going.

Of course, No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero came out of the gate on fire and leads the class in scoring. Bennedict Mathurin is a few points behind him in the scoring column, while Jaden Ivey continues to look electric so far.

In our second installment, some players cracked the rankings for the first time after a hot two-week stretch since our inaugural list came out. These newcomers have seemingly taken advantage of their opportunities and are making the most of them.

To make sense of it all, we took a look at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the latest edition of the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but, rather, to illustrate the best players week to week.

Pistons’ Jaden Ivey becomes third rookie with consecutive 20-point games

Ivey put up his second straight 20-point game in a four-point loss to the Raptors.

Jaden Ivey on Monday put up his second straight 20-point game, but the performance was not enough as the Detroit Pistons lost to the Toronto Raptors.

Ivey produced a team-high 21 points, eight assists, four rebounds and one steal in the 115-111 loss. He scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and finished 6-of-16 from the field and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line in 34 minutes of work.

The fifth pick became the third rookie this season with consecutive 20-point performances (Paolo Banchero, Bennedict Mathurin). He is the first rookie this season to total 21 points, eight assists and four rebounds in a game.

Pistons head coach Dwane Casey liked his shot creation in the game.

I thought his speed was the difference of getting into the paint and creating things for other people. I thought he did a good job of kicking out in those situations. It is a lot of pressure for a young man to close out a game like that but the only way he is going to learn is to go through it. … I thought Ivey put pressure on the defense with his speed and he got some great, open looks.

Ivey led the Pistons down the stretch as they nearly overcame an 11-point deficit. He created for himself and his teammates, organized the offense well and looked comfortable as the floor general.

Ivey continued a strong start to the season with the performance on Monday. He has scored in double figures in all but one of his 14 games, the most such games by a rookie. He is emerging as one of the top first-year players.

He looks to be as advertised as the fifth pick and is quickly emerging as a cornerstone for the Pistons. With Ivey and Cade Cunningham in the backcourt, the Pistons have arguably the top up-and-coming duo in the league on their roster.
