Michigan State at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Michigan State at Iowa odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) welcome the Michigan State Spartans (2-2, 0-1) to Kinnick Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Hawkeyes opened their Big Ten play last week with a 31-0 loss at No. 7 Penn State, failing to cover as a 14-point underdog. Iowa is 2-2 against the spread (ATS) and 1-3 O/U. It is led by former Michigan QB Cade McNamara, who has 4 TDs and 3 INTs. Iowa’s strength is in its defense, having allowed 14 or fewer points in each of its first 3 games.

Michigan State also opened conference play last week. It lost 31-9 to the Maryland Terrapins, closing as a 7-point underdog. The Spartans are 2-2 ATS. It has yet to cover as an underdog. This will be the Spartans’ 1st road game of the season too. QB Noah Kim captains the offense, but RB Nathan Carter, who has 369 rushing yards in 4 games, is the most lethal big-play weapon.

Michigan State at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 24, Michigan State 7

Moneyline

PASS.

There’s just no value here. Michigan State has been obliterated in 2 straight weeks and isn’t worth taking at +340. The expensive Iowa moneyline -450 isn’t worth backing either.

There’s nothing to see here.

Against the spread

BET IOWA -11.5 (-105).

Michigan State went on the road and lost 31-9 to Maryland last week. The Spartans are 0-2 straight up and ATS against Power 5 opponents. They were just 1-2-2 ATS on the road last season.

Iowa took down Big 12 side Iowa State and covered as a 3.5-point favorite in a 20-13 win in Week 2. The Hawkeyes were destroyed last week which might have been more about how good Penn State is and less about Iowa’s shortcomings.

The Hawkeyes have the better defense and better quarterback. Back them to cover. Take IOWA -11.5 (-110).

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 36.5 (-110).

If there’s one thing both sides can agree on, it is that scoring points is overrated. Michigan State has averaged 8 points per game against Power 5 foes. It is 1-3 O/U this season.

Iowa has topped 24 points just once this season and has held its opponent to 14 or fewer in 3 of 4 games. It is also 1-3 O/U through the first 4 weeks of the season.

Expect a slow-paced game and back UNDER 36.5 (-110).

Iowa at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Iowa at Penn State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) take a trip to Happy Valley to play the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0, 1-0) Saturday in this year’s White Out Game. Kickoff from Beaver Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Iowa vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Iowa is undefeated, but only 1 of their wins was convincing. The Hawkeyes struggled in wins vs. Utah State (24-14) and Iowa State (20-13). Last week they blew out the Western Michigan Broncos 41-10 as 28.5-point home favorites. QB Cade McNamara has looked shaky thus far, completing 38 of his 71 passes (54%) for 417 yards, 4 TDs, and 3 INTs.

The Nittany Lions have cruised to 3 pretty convincing wins, but their offense  looked shaky despite covering as 13-point favorite in last week’s 30-13 win vs. the Illinois Fighting Illini. QB Drew Allar had the worst start of his young career, completing 16 of 33 passes for 208 yards. The Penn State defense has been dominant (11.7 points per game) and I expect that to continue when backed by the White Out crowd vs. Iowa.

Iowa is No. 22 and Penn State is No. 7 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports

  • Moneyline (ML): Iowa +450 (bet $100 to win $450) | Penn State -650 (bet $650 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Iowa +14.5 (-110) | Penn State -14.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 40 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Iowa at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 32, Iowa 14

Moneyline

PASS.

The Nittany Lions are on a 3-game win streak in White Out Games, and I expect that streak to continue. But as a -650 favorite the line is not worth the juice. Bet on the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

LEAN PENN STATE -14.5 (-110).

I like the Nittany Lions to cover here as the deafening noise from the White Out crowd will make life very difficult on McNamara and the Iowa offense. Penn State’s defense has been stellar, having allowed 35 total points and no more than 15 points in any game, and I expect the Nittany Lions D to force turnovers that will help the offense generate points. Iowa has won the last 2 meetings with Penn State, but I expect that streak to come to end here.

Over/Under

BET OVER 40 (-110).

The Over number of 40 has been hit in 6 of the last 7 meetings between the Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions, and that should continue here. The Hawkeyes have struggled on offense, but Penn State should be able to carry this game to the Over. The Nittany Lions’ lowest scoring this season was 30 points, which makes me feel confident in their ability to put up points even if the offense isn’t firing on all cylinders.

Western Michigan at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Western Michigan at Iowa odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 24 Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0) welcome the Western Michigan Broncos (1-1) to Kinnick Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (Big Ten Ntwork). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Western Michigan vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Western Michigan opened its season up with a 35-17 win over St. Francis (Pa.), covering as a 13.5-point favorite. It then lost 48-7 at Syracuse, failing to cover as a 25-point underdog. The Broncos are led by RB Jalen Buckley, who has 281 yards rushing and 2 TDs in 2 games. They finished last season 5-7 overall and 3-3 on the road, 3rd in the MAC West.

The Hawkeyes beat Utah State 24-14 on Sept. 2, yet failed to cover a 24-point spread. They then beat Iowa State 20-13 on the road, covering as a 3.5-point underdog. Former Michigan QB Cade McNamara is the starter for the Hawkeyes and has 2 TDs and and INT in 2 starts. Iowa is No. 24 in the US LBM Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

  • Against the spread (ATS): Western Michigan +28.5 (-110) | Iowa -28.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 42.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Western Michigan at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 34, Western Michigan 3

Moneyline

PASS.

There’s nothing to see here. Never take a -10000 favorite in college sports.

Against the spread

LEAN IOWA -28.5 (-110).

The only concern here is if Iowa has the ability to score enough points to cover.

However, Syracuse scored 48 on Western Michigan, and it ranked 10th in the preseason ACC media poll. It wasn’t expected to look good yet the Broncos made them look like an NFL-caliber side. That dominance was more about how weak the Western Michigan defense is than the potency of the Orange.

The Hawkeyes have scored at least 14 points in a quarter in both games. McNamara was a high-profile transfer and captains the offense well. He should be able to put points on the board, and the Broncos may have little to say about it.

Iowa is coming off an impressive showing while Western Michigan is coming off a blowout loss against an unranked opponent. Back IOWA -28.5 (-110).

Over/Under

BET UNDER 42.5 (-110).

Iowa’s defense has been the crux of its game plan over the last several years. That will again be its strength in 2023, and it has allowed 14 or fewer in both games, against teams that are better offensively than Western Michigan.

Even if Iowa gets up big, it will likely pound the ball on the ground and likely won’t keep the gas on enough to top this total. Both teams are 0-2 O/U so far this season.

All logic points to fewer points. Back UNDER 42.5 (-110).

Iowa at Iowa State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Iowa at Iowa State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0) and the Iowa State Cyclones (1-0) lock horns in their annual battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy on Saturday. Kickoff from Jack Trice Stadium in Ames is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (FOX). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Iowa vs. Iowa State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Hawkeyes scratched out a 24-14 victory over Utah State in the opener, although Iowa never came close to covering the 24-point number as the Under (43.5) cashed. Iowa was actually outgained by USU in total yards  329-284, but the Hawkeyes were plus-1 in the turnover department.

The Cyclones got it done in their opener against FCS Northern Iowa, winning 30-9 as a 7-point favorite as the Under (40) narrowly came through. Like Iowa, the Cyclones were outgained by their opponent, and UNI posted 279 total yards of offense to just 250 for ISU. However, Iowa State was a plus-2 in turnover margin.

Iowa at Iowa State picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 23, Iowa State 16

Moneyline

Iowa (-185) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return, and that’s a little too steep for a road team, especially in a rivalry game.

The Hawkeyes offense looked slightly better last weekend, as QB Cade McNamara tossed 2 TDs in his team debut. Iowa’s offense should continue to jell under the former Michigan signal caller, and the defense for the Hawkeyes is always nasty. Still, this will be a defensive battle which goes to the team which makes fewer mistakes.

PASS.

Against the spread

IOWA -3.5 (-115) is the better play laying the points, although, again, it should be a 1-score game. Iowa was won 6 of the past 7 meetings straight-up, and the edge goes to the Hawkeyes here because they have a slightly more powerful offense this season. The Cyclones were outgained by an FCS foe last week, and their game would have been closer if not for the forced turnovers.

Over/Under

OVER 36.5 (-110) is risky business in an Iowa-Iowa State rivalry game, and we had a total of just 17 points last season in Ames. The Under has cashed in each of the previous 4 meetings, too. Still, I feel we’ll get a little more offense from Iowa than some might think.

Utah State at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Utah State at Iowa odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Utah State Aggies travel to Iowa City to battle the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday. Kickoff at Kinnick Stadium is at noon ET (FS1). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s (OR FanDuel Sportsbook’s) lines around the Utah State vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Utah State ranked outside the top-100 last season in both points scored and points allowed. The Aggies averaged 22.2 points per game (104th FBS) while yielding 31.2 PPG (105th) en route to going 6-7. USU returns QB Cooper Legas, but he will arrive in Iowa City without last year’s top rusher (RB Calvin Tyler) and without a couple of top receivers from a year ago.

The Hawkeyes were all defense and no offense last fall. Iowa allowed a nation’s-best 3.99 yards per play. On offense, it averaged 4.24 yards per play (129th). The hopes for a better offense in 2023 come from transfer QB Cade McNamara (2,576 passing yards for Michigan in 2021) and a slew of players returning from injury.

Utah State at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 31, Utah State 7

Moneyline

Avoid all the extra juice here: PASS.

Against the spread

Look for Iowa to get out to a lead with some 50-50 mix on offense and some big plays by its talented defense. How that lead gets managed or perhaps stalled is where this play gets too muddy.

Cap tip to the current line alongside a PASS.

Over/Under

The Under cashed in 9 of 13 Iowa games last season, and 6 of those Unders were by double-digit margins.

Yes, the Iowa offense has some reason for optimism. But McNamara may not play due to what has been reported as a right quad injury. Even if he does play, its easy to envision some growth for the UI offense, some dominance by the Hawkeye defense and a clock-moving-low-play-count game.

An inexperienced USU line just may have too much trouble against the Iowa front 7. Trouble putting 1st downs and drives together may wind up in Utah State getting less-than-14 points, and that’s another way this game lands short of the total.

BACK THE UNDER 43 (-110).

The Hawkeyes come in as the No. 8 seed. Iowa is led by F Kris Murray, who proved to be one of the best scorers in college hoops, averaging 20.4 points per game. The Hawkeyes lost to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament 73-69, but it has covered 2 of its last 4 games.

Auburn vs. Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 79, Auburn 75

Moneyline

BET IOWA (-105).

Having an elite scoring option is going to bode well for the Hawkeyes.  Murray went for 20 or more points in 3 of Iowa’s last 4 games, and the Tigers’ defense ranks 76 in the nation in opponents’ points per game (67.1).

Iowa has a strong defense, but Auburn’s offense could create issues. It ranks 224th in effective field goal percentage (49.6%). While defense matters, scoring is how you win tournament games, and Murray can provide that.

Back IOWA (-105).

Against the spread

PASS.

I’ll take Iowa to win outright here and take the near-plus-money odds on the moneyline.

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 152.5 (-108).

While Iowa has an explosive offense, most of its scoring isn’t done from deep — ranking 202nd in percentage of points from deep. It will be able to get in the inside and score like it has done most of the season.

Auburn has gone Over in 4 of its last 5 games and in 3 straight. Iowa has also gone Over in 3 of its last 4 and has scored at least 77 points in 3 of its last 4 as well. Considering the styles of play, back the OVER 152.5 (-108).

Big Ten Tournament: Ohio State vs. Iowa odds, picks and predictions

The Ohio State Buckeyes (14-18) battle the Iowa Hawkeyes (19-12) in the 2nd round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday. Tip from United Center in Chicago is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Ohio State vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Ohio State knocked off Wisconsin 65-57 to cover as a 1.5-point underdog Wednesday in the 1st round. The Buckeyes are 12-20 against the spread (ATS) this season but have covered the spread in their last 4 games.

Iowa fell to Nebraska 81-77 while failing to cover as a 12.5-point home favorite in its final regular-season game Sunday. The loss snapped a 2-game winning streak. The Hawkeyes are 4-6 ATS in their last 10 games and 17-14 ATS this season.

This will be the 3rd meeting this season with each team winning on its home court and the Over hitting in both games. OSU won 93-77 Jan. 21 as a 3.5-point favorite and Iowa won 92-75 as a 7.5-point favorite on Feb. 16.

Ohio State vs. Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 82, Ohio State 70

Moneyline

PASS.

Backing Iowa on the spread below is my preference compared to laying -140 on the moneyline.

Against the spread

BET IOWA -2.5 (-110).

While the Buckeyes have played well recently, they fell apart in the 2nd half against Wisconsin Wednesday, allowing the Badgers to overcome a 27-point deficit to bring the game within 6 in the closing minutes. The Buckeyes are just 3-10 ATS this season when playing as the underdog and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games.

Iowa is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 Thursday games and 2-1 ATS in its last 3 games. Expect the Hawkeyes offense, ranked 17th in the nation at 80.6 in points per game, to overwhelm the Buckeyes defense for a victory.

The favorite is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these 2 teams.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 153.5 (-105).

The Under is 5-0 in the Hawkeyes’ last 5 neutral site games and 2-1-1 in the Buckeyes’ last 4 games overall.

As it stands, 153.5 points ties for the highest closing line in the Buckeyes’ last 10 games and tied for the 4th-highest total in the Hawkeyes’ last 10 games.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (15-15, 8-11 Big Ten) look to finish the season in style with a victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes (19-11, 11-8) in Iowa City Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Nebraska vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

If Nebraska wins, it would sweep the Hawkeyes in the season series for the 1st time since joining the Big Ten Conference. If Iowa wins, it will assure itself a double bye in the conference tournament and will give coach Fred McCaffery a school-record 127th conference win.

This is a rematch of a 66-50 Nebraska win at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Dec. 29 which saw 5 Cornhuskers score in double digits. Iowa has not been held to 50 points often in recent years. It will look to avenge this lop-sided loss on Sunday.

Nebraska at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 79, Nebraska 66

Moneyline

PASS.

Iowa needs a win to gain a double-bye in the Big Ten Conference Tournament. While Nebraska has been solid at home, the road has been a different animal and I do not foresee Iowa having any issues with getting the win. I would never wager -700 on a favorite and this is no exception.

Against the spread

IOWA -11.5 (-110).

After losing to Nebraska 66-50, Iowa will be looking for more then seeding in this game. It will be looking for revenge.

Despite the Cornhuskers only getting to 66 points, they had 5 players reach double digits. This balance can be good in a defensive battle. But in an offensive matchup like the one that should occur in Carver-Hawkeye Arena Sunday, the explosiveness of Iowa will shine and cover the 11.5-point spread.

Over/Under

OVER 154.5 (-105).

Nebraska has gone Over the total in 6 straight games overall to end the season. For the Hawkeyes, they have several streaks of going Over of late.

Iowa is 21-6 to the Over after winning its previous game by more than 20 points. It has also gone Over in 19 of 27 games against a team with a losing road record. And 15 of the Hawkeyes last 21 games overall have also hit the Over.

Iowa scores at home. This will be another game in which they push the pace up and down the floor and force the Cornhuskers to keep up. Nebraska will try. And this will lead to an Over 154.5 being the side to make a play on.

Iowa at Indiana odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Iowa at Indiana odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (18-11, 10-8 Big Ten) visit No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers (20-9, 11-7) Tuesday in Bloomington. Tip-off at Assembly Hall is 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Iowa vs. Indiana odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Iowa is fresh off a 112-106 overtime win over Michigan State Saturday, covering the 5.5-point spread as a home favorite. After struggling from distance in 2 straight losses, the Hawkeyes hit a season-high 17 triples against the Spartans.

Indiana is seeking its 7th straight win at home. The Hoosiers lost to the Hawkeyes in Iowa City 91-89 on Jan. 5 as 1.5-point underdogs as 152.5 Over hit. Three of the last 4 Iowa-Indiana games have been decided by 3 points or less.

Iowa at Indiana picks and predictions

Prediction

Indiana 77, Iowa 75

Moneyline

Iowa is a lean, but not to a greater-than-1-chance-in-3 degree. PASS.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

The Hawkeyes are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games after allowing 90-plus points in their previous game.

Two bad recent losses by Iowa — Feb. 19 at Northwestern and Feb. 22 at Wisconsin — are shading this number quite a bit. Iowa was just awful from 3-point range in both those games (combined 6 of 52) and still was pretty tight with the Badgers for most of the Feb. 22 game.

A bad Hawkeye defense has had some worse-than-bad nights in defending shots of late, and there could be some regression due in that respect. Indiana is a bit banged up injury-wise.

Consider a partial-unit play on IOWA +5.5 (-110).

Over/Under

This match-up does not figure to produce an overabundance of 3s or free throws or other score-spiral inputs like 2nd-chance points or transition buckets.

Iowa has often been slowed down from their normal top-50 pace when playing away from home.

BACK THE UNDER 154.5 (-105).

Michigan State at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Michigan State at Iowa odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Michigan State Spartans (17-10, 9-7 Big Ten) and Iowa Hawkeyes (17-11, 9-8) meet Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Tip-off is scheduled for noon ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Iowa game odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Michigan State has won and covered 3 out of the past 4 games overall, although it is just 5-6 straight up (SU) across the past 11 outings. The Spartans are 3-5 against the spread (ATS) in the past 8 games, which includes a 63-61 win against Iowa as 2.5-point favorites in East Lansing back on Jan. 26.

Iowa has dropped its past 2 games, and the Hawkeyes are just 1-5 ATS across the past 6 games overall. The Under has hit in 3 of the previous 4 games overall for the Hawkeyes and has cashed in 5 of their past 6 against teams with an overall winning mark.

Michigan State at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 71, Iowa 68

Moneyline

MICHIGAN STATE (+200) is worth a roll of the dice on the moneyline, as it has been playing great basketball lately. An emotional win over Indiana, as well as victories over Ohio State and Maryland, have it positioned well for a run at an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament if it can keep on winning.

Sparty proved it can take care of Iowa before, and the Hawkeyes have been on a slide lately. Look for Michigan State to pounce and take advantage.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

MICHIGAN STATE +5.5 (-105) is a solid pick if you can’t pull the trigger and bet it straight up.

The Hawkeyes are just 1-5 ATS in the past 6 games overall and 0-4 ATS in the past 4 against winning teams.

Look for Sparty to get their 18th win, and keep building momentum toward the postseason.

Over/Under

UNDER 145.5 (-110) is the lean in this Big Ten battle. Go with a half-unit play at most.

While the trends for both teams lately suggest an Over result, we saw a total of just 124 points scored between these teams in the first matchup in East Lansing back in late January.

In addition, the Under is 3-1 in the past 4 games overall for Iowa and 6-4 in the past 10 for Michigan State.
