Michigan State at Iowa odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Michigan State at Iowa odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Iowa Hawkeyes (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) welcome the Michigan State Spartans (2-2, 0-1) to Kinnick Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Iowa odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Hawkeyes opened their Big Ten play last week with a 31-0 loss at No. 7 Penn State, failing to cover as a 14-point underdog. Iowa is 2-2 against the spread (ATS) and 1-3 O/U. It is led by former Michigan QB Cade McNamara, who has 4 TDs and 3 INTs. Iowa’s strength is in its defense, having allowed 14 or fewer points in each of its first 3 games.

Michigan State also opened conference play last week. It lost 31-9 to the Maryland Terrapins, closing as a 7-point underdog. The Spartans are 2-2 ATS. It has yet to cover as an underdog. This will be the Spartans’ 1st road game of the season too. QB Noah Kim captains the offense, but RB Nathan Carter, who has 369 rushing yards in 4 games, is the most lethal big-play weapon.

Michigan State at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 24, Michigan State 7

Moneyline

PASS.

There’s just no value here. Michigan State has been obliterated in 2 straight weeks and isn’t worth taking at +340. The expensive Iowa moneyline -450 isn’t worth backing either.

There’s nothing to see here.

Against the spread

BET IOWA -11.5 (-105).

Michigan State went on the road and lost 31-9 to Maryland last week. The Spartans are 0-2 straight up and ATS against Power 5 opponents. They were just 1-2-2 ATS on the road last season.

Iowa took down Big 12 side Iowa State and covered as a 3.5-point favorite in a 20-13 win in Week 2. The Hawkeyes were destroyed last week which might have been more about how good Penn State is and less about Iowa’s shortcomings.

The Hawkeyes have the better defense and better quarterback. Back them to cover. Take IOWA -11.5 (-110).

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 36.5 (-110).

If there’s one thing both sides can agree on, it is that scoring points is overrated. Michigan State has averaged 8 points per game against Power 5 foes. It is 1-3 O/U this season.

Iowa has topped 24 points just once this season and has held its opponent to 14 or fewer in 3 of 4 games. It is also 1-3 O/U through the first 4 weeks of the season.

Expect a slow-paced game and back UNDER 36.5 (-110).

The Michigan State Spartans (17-10, 9-7 Big Ten) and Iowa Hawkeyes (17-11, 9-8) meet Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Tip-off is scheduled for noon ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Michigan State vs. Iowa game odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Michigan State has won and covered 3 out of the past 4 games overall, although it is just 5-6 straight up (SU) across the past 11 outings. Michigan State at Iowa picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 71, Iowa 68

Moneyline

MICHIGAN STATE (+200) is worth a roll of the dice on the moneyline, as it has been playing great basketball lately. An emotional win over Indiana, as well as victories over Ohio State and Maryland, have it positioned well for a run at an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament if it can keep on winning.

Sparty proved it can take care of Iowa before, and the Hawkeyes have been on a slide lately. Look for Michigan State to pounce and take advantage.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

MICHIGAN STATE +5.5 (-105) is a solid pick if you can’t pull the trigger and bet it straight up.

The Hawkeyes are just 1-5 ATS in the past 6 games overall and 0-4 ATS in the past 4 against winning teams.

Look for Sparty to get their 18th win, and keep building momentum toward the postseason.

Over/Under

UNDER 145.5 (-110) is the lean in this Big Ten battle. Go with a half-unit play at most.

While the trends for both teams lately suggest an Over result, we saw a total of just 124 points scored between these teams in the first matchup in East Lansing back in late January.

In addition, the Under is 3-1 in the past 4 games overall for Iowa and 6-4 in the past 10 for Michigan State.

Michigan State at Iowa odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Michigan State Spartans at Iowa Hawkeyes odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets in a Big Ten battle.

Below, we look at the Michigan State vs. Iowa odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Michigan State at Iowa odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 75, Michigan State 72

Money line

Iowa (-300) will cost you three times your potential return, and that’s a rather hefty price tag in what is essentially a coin-flip game against a ranked visitor.

PASS, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread

MICHIGAN STATE +6.5 (-110) is the play in this conference battle. Yes, Sparty have really struggled lately, but Iowa laying more than three buckets is a little steep. The books are overestimating Iowa after its huge victory on the road against Ohio State. The Spartans should keep it close, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see them win outright.

PLAY: Our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

The UNDER 153.5 (-112) is worth a look. Michigan State has hit the Under in five of its last seven games against teams with a winning straight-up record while going 8-3 in the past 11 as an underdog. Iowa has cashed the Over at a 19-6-1 clip in the past 26 games at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, but Michigan State is solid defensively, especially at the perimeter.

Michigan State at Iowa: Three things to know

  1. Michigan State is on a 3-game skid, recently falling at Ohio State 79-62 Sunday. The Spartans, who were 5.5-point underdogs, have failed to cover the spread in three consecutive games and are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 contests. Junior F Aaron Henry leads MSU in scoring (13.1 points per game), assists (3.4 APG), steals (1.5 SPG) and blocks (1.4 BPG), while junior F Joey Hauser averages 11.3 PPG and a team-best 7.4 RPG.
  2. Iowa is on a 2-game slide after dropping an 80-75 decision as a 3-point road dog at Illinois Friday. There were eight lead changes in the final 14:22 with Iowa holding its final lead at 72-71 with 2:44 to go. C Luka Garza, the nation’s leading scorer at 26.4 PPG, played only 28 minutes due to foul trouble and finished with 19 points. Garza also leads the Hawkeyes with 8.6 RPG and 1.7 BPG.
  3. The Spartans have won the last five in the head-to-head series but are 3-2 ATS in those games. Michigan State won the only meeting last season 78-70 but failed to cover as a 9.5-point home favorite. In their last meeting in Iowa City (Jan. 24, 2019), the Spartans claimed an 82-67 victory as 5-point favorites.

Michigan State at Iowa: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 82, Michigan State 69

Money line (ML)

AVOID. Iowa shouldn’t have a problem with Michigan State, but betting a -625 favorite is not worth the risk.

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA -10.5 (-110) is the way to go. While Michigan State is 5-1 in its last six trips to Iowa City, this is not your typical Tom Izzo Spartans squad.

Iowa has won 10 of its 12 games by 15 or more points and it’s outscoring opponents by 15.6 PPG.

ATS: Michigan State 3-11 | Iowa 10-6

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 155.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Spartans can’t score. In their last two games, they shot 32.1% from the field vs. Ohio State Sunday and 28.6% against Rutgers Thursday. They’re also on a 4-game Under streak.

Iowa ranks second in the nation at 89.7 PPG, including 82.7 PPG in Big Ten games. Michigan State averages 72.2 PPG overall and ranks last in the Big Ten at 62.8 PPG in conference games.

O/U records: Michigan State 6-8 | Iowa 10-6

Michigan State at Iowa: Three things to know

  1. Michigan State upset rival Michigan 27-24 in Ann Arbor last week as a huge 21.5-point underdog. The Wolverines were ranked 14th in the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. Spartans QB Rocky Lombardi threw for 323 yards and 3 touchdowns, and freshman WR Ricky Wright finished with 196 receiving yards on 8 catches as first-year head coach Mel Tucker picked up his first win at MSU.
  2. Iowa lost its home opener to Northwestern 21-20 as a 1-point dog last week. The Hawkeyes led 17-0 after one quarter and 20-7 midway through the second before yielding the eventual game-winning TD with 6:05 to go in the third. Iowa QB Spencer Petras completed 26 of 50 passes for 216 yards, 1 TD and 3 picks. The Hawkeyes finished with only 77 rushing yards, led by Tyler Goodson (43 yards, 1 TD, 13 carries). Senior WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who also returns kicks, is suspended for the MSU game following an OWI arrest last Sunday morning.
  3. The Spartans have won the last three in the series, most recently 17-10 at home in 2017. They are also 3-0 in their last three trips to Iowa City, last winning 16-13 as 3-point favorites in 2015. Iowa’s last win vs. Michigan State was a 19-16 decision in East Lansing in 2012.

Michigan State at Iowa: Odds, prediction, betting lines and picks

Prediction

Iowa 20, Michigan State 17

Money line (ML)

PASS. While I’m picking Iowa (-250) to win its first game of the season, I’m not laying -250.

Against the spread (ATS)

MICHIGAN STATE +6.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. Lombardi returns to his home state where he played high school ball in West Des Moines. The Spartans looked like a completely different team in their Michigan win compared to their opener, a 38-27 home loss to Rutgers. However, they’ll come up a bit short vs. the Hawkeyes, who are 0-2 and desperate for a W.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 46.5 (-115). These two have a history of slugging it out in low-scoring affairs when they meet. Seven of the last eight head-to-head matchups finished with 40 or fewer points – including four finals of 29 points or fewer.
