Iowa at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Iowa at Penn State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) take a trip to Happy Valley to play the No. 7 Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0, 1-0) Saturday in this year’s White Out Game. Kickoff from Beaver Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (CBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Iowa vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Iowa is undefeated, but only 1 of their wins was convincing. The Hawkeyes struggled in wins vs. Utah State (24-14) and Iowa State (20-13). Last week they blew out the Western Michigan Broncos 41-10 as 28.5-point home favorites. QB Cade McNamara has looked shaky thus far, completing 38 of his 71 passes (54%) for 417 yards, 4 TDs, and 3 INTs.

The Nittany Lions have cruised to 3 pretty convincing wins, but their offense  looked shaky despite covering as 13-point favorite in last week’s 30-13 win vs. the Illinois Fighting Illini. QB Drew Allar had the worst start of his young career, completing 16 of 33 passes for 208 yards. The Penn State defense has been dominant (11.7 points per game) and I expect that to continue when backed by the White Out crowd vs. Iowa.

Iowa at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 32, Iowa 14

Moneyline

PASS.

The Nittany Lions are on a 3-game win streak in White Out Games, and I expect that streak to continue. But as a -650 favorite the line is not worth the juice. Bet on the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

LEAN PENN STATE -14.5 (-110).

I like the Nittany Lions to cover here as the deafening noise from the White Out crowd will make life very difficult on McNamara and the Iowa offense. Penn State’s defense has been stellar, having allowed 35 total points and no more than 15 points in any game, and I expect the Nittany Lions D to force turnovers that will help the offense generate points. Iowa has won the last 2 meetings with Penn State, but I expect that streak to come to end here.

Over/Under

BET OVER 40 (-110).

The Over number of 40 has been hit in 6 of the last 7 meetings between the Hawkeyes and Nittany Lions, and that should continue here. The Hawkeyes have struggled on offense, but Penn State should be able to carry this game to the Over. The Nittany Lions’ lowest scoring this season was 30 points, which makes me feel confident in their ability to put up points even if the offense isn’t firing on all cylinders.

Iowa at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Iowa at Penn State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (8-5, 0-2 Big Ten) tussle with the Penn State Nittany Lions (10-3, 1-1) Sunday. Tip from Bryce Jordan Center is at 5:30 p.m. ET (Big Ten Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Iowa vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Iowa is one of the top-scoring teams in the nation (81.2 points per game, 28th) and is 2nd in the Big Ten behind only Ohio State. However, defense is an issue, and Iowa must find a way to slow the Nittany Lions’ offense if it hopes to gain its 1st conference victory.

Penn State — while not as prolific as Iowa — still puts up 75.5 points per game. Leading scorer G Jalen Pickett (16.4 points per game) will look to take advantage of the soft Hawkeyes defense.

  • Moneyline (ML): Iowa +105 (bet $100 to win $105) | Penn State -135 (bet $135 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Iowa +2.5 (-115) | Penn State -2.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 147.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Iowa at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 80, Iowa 75

Moneyline

PASS.

Penn State (-135) is a fine play as part of a parlay, but with such a small spread you can get more value there than by making a straight play. The odds of Iowa covering and not winning are not good.

Against the spread

BET PENN STATE -2.5 (-105).

Penn State will use its homecourt advantage to the fullest Sunday. Iowa started off the season as a ranked team, but after a series of losses finds it at 8-5 and trailing the surprising 10-3 Penn State. This game will only solidify the Nittany Lions’ place over the Hawkeyes for this season as the Lions pull out a victory here.

Over/Under

BET OVER 147.5 (-110).

Iowa and Penn State are averaging a combined 156.6 points per game. While this game may not get to that number, 147.5 is a bit low on what can be expected.

Both Iowa and Penn State can pick up the pace and this will be a back-and-forth game in the normally slow Big Ten. These are 2 of the fastest teams in the country and the game will play this way. OVER 147.5 (-110) is my favorite play in this one.

Iowa at Penn State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Iowa at Penn State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (14-6, 4-5 Big Ten) visit the Penn State Nittany Lions (8-9, 3-6) Monday night in State College, Pa. The contest at the Bryce Jordan Center is slated to tip off at 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Iowa vs. Penn State odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Iowa lost to Purdue Thursday and is just 7-6 in 13 games since going 7-0 in November. The Hawkeyes sport a top-15 offense nationally, and they play at the second-fastest pace in the Big Ten (Nebraska). But Iowa has struggled with its shooting of late: the Hawkeyes have shot just 35.2% from the field over their last three games. That stretch does include, however, a 68-51 win over this Penn State team (Jan. 22).

The Nittany Lions lost at Iowa and then dropped a 74-57 game at Indiana Wednesday. Penn State shot 33.3% from the floor in both games and got to the line just 22 times in the two games combined. Overall, PSU has dropped three in a row and four of its last five.

Iowa at Penn State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Iowa 72, Penn State 67

Money line

Penn State has not fared well against faster teams. The Lions aren’t bad on the offensive glass, which is a key to doing well against Iowa. But PSU had just seven offensive boards when these two met Jan. 22. The Hawkeyes won that game by 17, but they led by 5-7 points for a large swath of the contest.

Still, the advantage Iowa has here on offense, in cranking out second-chance points and creating scores off turnovers, MAKES THE HAWKEYES (-190) A WORKABLE PLAY.

Against the spread

Look for a veteran PSU five to finish this game stronger than the one in Iowa City. But IOWA -3.5 (-120) is a solid play.

Over/Under

The last meeting hit the Under but was tabbed at 142.5. PASS, but consider an Over in something closer to the 137-range.

Iowa at Penn State odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Iowa Hawkeyes at Penn State Nittany Lions sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Penn State Nittany Lions (0-4) host the Big Ten rival Iowa Hawkeyes (2-2) at Beaver Stadium at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday. Below, we analyze the Iowa-Penn State college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Over/Under: 47.5 (O: -106 | U: -115)

Iowa at Penn State: Three things to know

  • Penn State QB Sean Clifford was benched for QB Will Levis in the second quarter of last week’s 30-23 loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers due to Clifford’s continued turnovers. He threw an interception and gave up a strip-sack fumble for a touchdown in the first half. Clifford is still projected to start Saturday.
  • Following an 0-2 start, Iowa has won back-to-back games against Michigan State and Minnesota by a combined score of 84-14. The Hawkeyes offense is being carried by the two-headed rushing attack of RBs Tyler Goodson and Mekhi Sargent.
  • James Franklin’s Nittany Lions are 4-0 straight up and 3-1 ATS versus Iowa since he was hired as head coach in 2014.

Iowa at Penn State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 24, Penn State 19

Money line (ML)

Just because this is the worst Nittany Lions team since Franklin took over as head coach doesn’t mean head coach Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes are going to take it easy on them.

Penn State hoped to have what Iowa has in its backfield but instead RBs Journey Brown and Noah Cain aren’t on the roster. Because of which Penn State’s rush game has plummeted this year, the Nittany Lions are 89th in yards per carry and 71st in rushing yards per game.

Penn State’s defense has been awful this season in high leverage situations: 100th in opponent’s 3rd down conversion percentage and 85th in opponent’s red-zone scoring percentage. Additionally, the Nittany Lions have negative net yards per play differential and are ranked 105th in both points per play and opponent’s points per play.

I am a little hesitant to take the Hawkeyes here because they’ve been steamed from an underdog to a favorite, but I’ll lean IOWA (-129) for a quarter-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS ON THE SPREAD. Obviously, it’s Iowa ATS or nothing but the market is hammering the Hawkeyes and it feels like a trap. Generally, sharps would like to fade the public because the house usually wins and this is a perfect sell-high spot for Iowa and a buy-low spot for Penn State.

Over/Under (O/U)

Iowa’s advanced defensive metrics this season are fantastic: Sixth in overall defensive FEI ratings, opponent’s busted drive rate and opponent’s turnover rate, and ninth in opponent’s points per drive, according to Football Outsiders.

You’ve read plenty of reasons to be concerned about Penn State’s offense but the biggest issues are its 126th rank in red-zone scoring percentage and 116th in offensive turnover rate. If the Nittany Lions are able to move the ball but continue their miscues and penalties, the UNDER 47.5 (-115) is a lock.

Plus Penn State’s defense has been trash all season (ranked 95th in opponent’s points per game) yet its Over/Under record is 1-2-1 O/U. The Lions should have success against Iowa’s first-year starting QB Spencer Petras, who has the lowest passer efficiency in the Big Ten.

GIMME UNDER 47.5 (-115) for 1.5 units.
