The games continue to be huge for the Ohio State basketball squad in the deep, talented Big Ten. Michigan is looking to run away and hide when it comes to the regular-season conference title, but there’s still a lot on the line. The Buckeyes are trying to hold onto a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and need to grab some momentum as the postseason nears after losing two straight games.

Iowa is the team just behind the Buckeyes in the standings, and a win would allow Iowa to leapfrog OSU into the third spot in the league. It’s a huge matchup between two big-men when you consider what will happen in and around the post between Luka Garza and E.J. Liddell. There’s sure to be a lot of points scored between two highly efficient offenses.

Let’s dive into all this game has to offer, and end it off with a prediction.

Next … The Ohio State game plan

Ohio State basketball slight favorite over Iowa Sunday according to BetMGM

According to BetMGM, Ohio State is a slight favorite over Iowa on the basketball court Sunday in another key Big Ten matchup.

Ohio State and Iowa are set to matchup Sunday in a very key Big Ten matchup. Michigan might be running away when it comes to the regular-season conference title, but there’s still some jockeying available for the upcoming Big Ten and NCAA tournaments.

The Buckeyes are trying to hang on to a No. 1 seed, and Iowa is trying to move up as a very high seed as well. It should be a close game, and a matchup that both teams need to get momentum and get back on the winning track.

Early on in the year, most odds would have had Iowa as a prohibitive favorite in this one, but here as we sit on game day, the Buckeyes are favored by 3.5 points according to BetMGM.

It’s a narrow line, and one that you’d expect would play out as another close game in the super deep and super talented Big Ten conference.

Ohio State forward Kyle Young game time decision vs. Iowa

According to insider Jon Rothstein, Ohio State forward Kyle Young will be a game-time decision for the basketball game against Iowa.

Ohio State has another huge matchup on deck when it hosts the top ten Iowa Hawkeyes Sunday. The Buckeyes have lost two straight games and its status as a No. 1 seed is fleeting. There’s still the opportunity there with games against Iowa and Illinois, and then the Big Ten tournament, but OSU needs to get back on the winning track.

One of the reasons OSU lost to Michigan State Thursday had to do with forward Kyle Young being out because of concussion protocol. What he means for this team doesn’t always show up in the box score, but there was a noticeable difference in how disjointed Ohio State looked in East Lansing.

Inquiring minds of Buckeye fans then want to know if Young will be back for the game against the Hawkeyes, and it appears as though there is at least a chance. According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, head coach Chris Holtmann has informed him that Young is a game-time decision.

It must be noted that Iowa will be without key bench player Jack Nunge due to a season-ending knee injury as well.  Here’s to hoping that Young can go, and if not, that OSU can find a way to get the job done at home.

Three stats that defined Iowa’s 77-62 win over Wisconsin

The stats that sum up Wisconsin’s loss

After jumping ahead 14-3 through just five minutes of action, Iowa never let the lead slip en route to a 77-62 win.

Wisconsin (15-8, 9-7) couldn’t get the stops needed to complete a furious second half comeback as the Hawkeye three-point shooting and Luka Garza at his best ended up being the difference.

There were some wild statistical anomalies as Iowa (16-6, 10-5) shot the lights out from distance and Wisconsin struggled to finish around the rim while winning the battle on the glass.

Here are the three stats that led to Iowa’s third win in as many Big Ten games:

Five takeaways from Wisconsin’s 77-62 loss to Iowa

Takeaways from Wisconsin’s loss to Iowa

Playing from behind for nearly 40 minutes proved to be too tall of a task for Wisconsin against one of college basketball’s most potent offense in Iowa.

After a 14-3 Iowa lead was built through the first five minutes at the Kohl Center, the Badgers never could fully climb the mountain. The No. 11 Hawkeyes shot their way out of a second half Wisconsin push to finish strong for a 77-62 win.

Micah Potter led the way offensively for the No. 21 Badgers while playing a season-high 30 minutes. The senior ended the night with 23 points and 11 rebounds, but Iowa’s National Player of the Year candidate Luka Garza delivered as the promised main event. The senior put up a 30-piece on the Badgers and was lethal from beyond the arc.

Here are five takeaway’s from Wisconsin’s loss to Iowa:

Wisconsin basketball favored vs Iowa? A surprising current line at BetMGM

The Badgers are now favored vs Iowa

Wisconsin may be coming off of a disastrous second half at home vs Michigan and be 3-4 in their last 7 Big Ten games, but it didn’t stop sharp bettors from hammering UW vs Iowa tonight.

For a line that opened with No. 21 Wisconsin being 1-1.5 point underdogs depending on where you looked, Wisconsin has now shifted to a -1 favorite per BetMGM, as money has come in on the Badgers. No. 11 Iowa has covered the spread in back-to-back wins after failing to cover the number in five straight games before that. The Hawkeyes will be without starting guard C.J. Fredrick, a sharpshooting sophomore who helps Iowa stretch the floor.

These two teams met last year in Iowa City, and have similar cores this time around. The Hawkeyes got the better of the Badgers with a 68-62 win last January.

Michigan State Basketball can’t stop hot-shooting Iowa in 88-58 defeat

Iowa started the game hot and continued to pour it on throughout the game. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong for Michigan State.

Iowa started the game hot and continued to pour it on throughout the game. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong for Michigan State. They could not get their shots to fall, and struggled to contain the Hawkeyes shooting in a disappointing 88-58 beating.

It was just a sloppy game as the Spartans were outscored 46-27 in the first half. They couldn’t make their shots and Iowa made the most of the shots they took. Iowa finished the half 16-30 shooting while the Spartans were 11-35 from the field.  The big difference was beyond the arc where the Hawkeyes shot 8-13 while the Spartans were just 2-11 in the first half.

It didn’t get any better in the second half, as the Spartans struggled while the Hawkeyes kept knocking down threes. The Hawkeyes finished the game 13-25 from beyond the arc, while the Spartans were inept and finished a lowly 6-21 from three point range.

Joe Wieskamp lead the way for Iowa with 21 points on 7-13 shooting and 5-7 from three. He also had seven rebounds and three assists. Jack Nunge also added 18 points on 7-11 shooting with 11 rebounds.

The Spartans actually contained Luka Garza who finished with eight points, which is his lowest on the season, on 3-11 shooting. In fact, that’s the first time Garza has scored less than 10 points in a game since November 29, 2019, when he scored nine points in a loss to San Diego State. Unfortunately, they couldn’t contain the rest of the Hawkeyes.

Gabe Brown led the way for the Spartans with 15 points on 6-10 shooting, and 3-5 from three point land. Aaron Henry had 13 points on 5-11 shooting and added four rebounds.

This loss also halts any chances of Michigan State of getting into the tournament through the at-large bid. The Spartans will have to work on preparing for the Big Ten Tournament as that will be their only chance at making the NCAA Tournament for a 23rd straight season in which the tournament has been held.

Michigan State Basketball vs. Iowa: Where to Watch, Game Preview & Prediction

Check out the game details, keys to the match-up, and my game prediction in this Michigan State-Iowa preview.

Michigan State will look to keep their modest two-game winning streak alive with what would be a huge victory on Saturday against No. 15 Iowa from the Breslin Center.

The Spartans enter this game with a little bit of momentum after holding on to beat Penn State on Tuesday night, 60-58. Michigan State led by as many as 12-points in the second half but needed a late run to escape with a victory.

Iowa got the best of the Spartans just last week in a close game in Iowa City. Can Michigan State find a way to earn a season split with the Hawkeyes?

Let’s take a look at this match-up against the Hawkeyes, with game details, things to watch, and last but not least my prediction for this game.

Three takeaways from Ohio State basketball’s win over Michigan State

Ohio State traveled to Iowa City and found a way to beat another top opponent on the road. Here are three takeaways from the win.

The Ohio State basketball team met yet another significant challenge on Thursday night by disposing of a top ten Iowa ballclub at its place by the score of 89-85. It was one in which the Buckeyes got out to a lead early, but had to battle back from eleven down in the second half. It was OSU’s fourth win over a top fifteen opponent on the road, in a conference that’s hard enough to win night in and night out.

No matter how you look at this one, it was an entertaining, fast-paced, and high scoring affair with both teams playing at a very high level. It could have gone either way, but Ohio State found a way to make plays at the end of the game to come out with a victory that moves its record to 15-4 overall, and 9-4 in the Big Ten — in a virtual tie with Illinois for second place. Yes, you read that correctly.

There was plenty to take from this game, so let’s get to it. Here are three observations and things we think we learned about the impressive win in Iowa City by Ohio State.

WATCH what Iowa basketball head coach Fran McCaffrey, players said about Ohio State after the loss

Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey and a couple of the Hawkeye players met with the media to talk about Ohio State after the loss to the Buckeyes.

The Ohio State basketball team travels well apparently. It went on the road yet again — this time against Iowa — and beat a top ten team in an entertaining up and down, high scoring game. It was the fourth top-fifteen win this year, a program first.

To be fair, the game could have gone either way, but the Buckeyes battled back from eleven down in the second half to win this top ten matchup.

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffrey and a couple of the players met with the media afterward to discuss the game and what they saw from Ohio State.

In case you’re interested in what the opposition says (we are), then we’ve got the video and audio thanks to the Hawkeye Nation YouTube Channel. Watch and listen below as McCaffery talks about Ohio State’s shooters, how his team battled against a really good team, and even more from some of the Hawkeye players.
