Gym looking to endorse entire Miami football team

If the entire Notre Dame football team were to endorse a single product, what should it be and why?

Earlier this week the Notre Dame offensive line became the benefactors of the new NIL laws as they found an official sponsor for the entire unit.  Now it’s the entire Miami Hurricanes football team that the owner of an MMA gym is trying to endorse.

Dan Lambert owns American Top Team and has a plan in place for the Miami football team to benefit as he wants to endorse every scholarship player for $500 per month in exchange for publicity for his gym on social media.

“I’m not looking to profit from this,” Lambert said. “I want to try to bring people together and make our team better. I’ve got too many Gator and Seminole friends that have been (expletive) on me for the last 20 years. I want to reverse it.”

I can’t be the only one who thinks if Miami is going to be endorsed by a gym that it should be linked to Dwayne Johnson.

Nighttime catch of ‘monster’ snook a pending world record

After a recent day of fishing, in stormy surf and vanishing daylight, guide Wesley Brough tried one more cast and reeled in a massive snook that could shatter a 20-year-old world record.

After a recent day of fishing, in stormy surf and vanishing daylight, guide Wesley Brough tried one more cast and reeled in a “monster” snook that could shatter a 20-year-old world record.

“We were getting ready to leave when we saw mullet flying out of the water and decided on a last cast,” Brough, a surf-fishing guide in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, told For The Win Outdoors. “I figured it was another roosterfish. Knowing there was not enough light for a good picture, I decided to horse him in and get him released.

“The fish was on the beach in about six minutes and it was definitely not a rooster. To our surprise it was a monster snook like neither of us had ever seen before.”

The Pacific white snook, caught June 28, weighed 51 pounds, 4.8 ounces on a certified scale in town. The International Game Fish Assn. world record stands at 47 pounds, 8 ounces. That fish also was caught off Cabo San Lucas, on July 4, 2001.

Snook catches are rare on Cabo San Lucas beaches. Brough, owner of Cabo Surfcaster guide service, was fishing for roosterfish with Matt Strehle on the Pacific side of Baja California’s tip, in surf generated by Hurricane Enrique far to the south.

“Winds were 25 to 30 mph and storm waves were stacked four to five waves deep,” Brough said. “The only things we had going for us is that the water was warm and there was bait in the area.”

Brough and Strehle were casting lures beyond the waves and retrieving them rapidly so they’d mimic fleeing baitfish. They were targeting roosterfish for catch-and-release photo opportunities.

“As the sun went down we started to see the bait get really nervous and we launched casts out over the waves into the bait,” Brough recalled. “I got hit right away on a big Savagegear stickbait and passed off the rod and it ended up being a 50- to 55-pound rooster.

“After pictures and a quick release we ended up repeating the process three casts later with a 45-pound rooster and a 25-pound jack crevalle.”

Brough’s next cast, in near darkness, produced the snook strike. He said he’d have released the fish but it was hooked deep in the throat and would not have survived.

On Instagram he described the snook, which measured 50 inches with a 30-inch girth, as a “sea monster.”

Brough said he fought the fish in accordance with IGFA rules and has submitted a record application. The IGFA typically makes a determination after several weeks.

North Carolina’s offense explodes at Miami

North Carolina ran up, down, over, and through tenth-ranked Miami’s defense on Saturday.

It was just two short weeks ago when Notre Dame went on the road, allowed touchdowns on the first two North Carolina possessions, and then held the Tar Heels to just three points the rest of the way in the 31-17 Irish victory.

Fast forward to today and North Carolina’s highly touted offense was on full display, blasting Miami for 62 points in their 62-26 win at Hard Rock Stadium.

Michael Carter and Javonte Williams, the same running back tandem that Notre Dame held to just 85 yards on 19 carries two weeks ago, ran for an NCAA record 544 yards.

That total is the most ever by a pair of teammates in NCAA history, besting Jarvis Thrasher (324) and Quincy Daniels (199) who combined for 523 yards as teammates with Division-III Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2007.

Carter won the teammate battle in yardage, finishing with 308 yards and a pair of scores.  Williams however found the end zone more, finding pay dirt three times while rushing for 236 yards.

As a team North Carolina wound up with 554 total rushing yards and an additional rushing touchdown from quarterback Sam Howell.

The 778 total yards by North Carolina on Saturday were a record for most ever allowed by a Miami football team.

If for some reason you weren’t already incredibly impressed with how well Notre Dame’s defense has performed this season then this should at least give a little bit more validation to that seeing as North Carolina did this against what was a top ten team.

Updated: List of this week’s college football games canceled/postponed due to COVID-19

Add another top team to the list of college football programs who won’t be playing a game on Saturday afternoon after this ACC cancellation.

Yesterday we shared with you the list of all college football games that had been cancelled or postponed as a result of COVID-19.  We said then that we would be surprised if anymore came to be but that in this 2020 world we’re living in that we couldn’t be certain.

My exact words on the matter were as follows:

As of Friday afternoon, it’s hard to imagine any more college football games being called off for this weekend but it’s certainly a possibility in this strange time. – Nick Shepkowski

Well, it turns out we can add to the list we put out on Friday as No. 4 Clemson’s game at Florida State has been postponed due to a positive test of a Clemson player on Friday.

That’s certainly a shocker for both teams as well as the entire ACC and all of college football.

Here is an updated list of all the Saturday games that have been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19:

No 4 Clemson at Florida State
Ole Miss at No. 5 Texas A&M
Georgia Tech at No. 12 Miami (FL)
Charlotte at No. 15 Marshall
No. 22 Texas at Kansas
Central Arkansas at No. 24 Louisiana
Michigan State at Maryland
Wake Forest at Duke
Houston at SMU
UL Monroe at Louisiana Tech
UNLV at Colorado State
San Jose State at Fresno State
Navy at South Florida
Arizona State at Colorado

Here’s to hoping I’m not having to update this list again later today.

Complete list of postponed/canceled college football games this weekend

COVID-19 continues to terrorize the country. Here are all the college football games that were called off this weekend as a result.

In a year like none, we’ve ever seen in college football and one we hope we never see again, at least in terms of trying to play the grand game through a global pandemic.

In the meantime, we continue to have cancellations and postponements for games that were scheduled to be played this week.

As of Friday afternoon, it’s hard to imagine any more college football games being called off for this weekend but it’s certainly a possibility in this strange time.

Here is the complete list that is up to date with every game that has been called off for this weekend:

Ole Miss at No. 5 Texas A&M
Georgia Tech at No. 12 Miami (FL)
Charlotte at No. 15 Marshall
No. 22 Texas at Kansas
Central Arkansas at No. 24 Louisiana
Michigan State at Maryland
Wake Forest at Duke
Houston at SMU
UL Monroe at Louisiana Tech
UNLV at Colorado State
San Jose State at Fresno State
Navy at South Florida
Arizona State at Colorado

Many believed LSU and Arkansas would be canceled as well but as of Friday afternoon reports have that game being all-systems-go for Saturday.

ACC: Miami has three games rescheduled due to COVID-19 outbreak

A COVID-19 outbreak at Miami means huge changes to the remainder of the 2020 ACC Football schedule. Details of it all right here.

This past weekend many looked at the point-spread between No. 9 Miami and unranked Virginia Tech and were confused to see a struggling Hokies team as a slight favorite.

Then news came out Saturday morning that Miami was dealing with a bit of a COVID-19 outbreak on their team and would be playing the game short-handed.

Miami went on to sneak out of Blacksburg with a one-point victory, but they didn’t escape without lasting issues for the rest of the season as Monday saw the entirety of their remaining regular season switched up.

Miami’s contest against Georgia Tech has been moved from this weekend to Saturday, December 19, assuming the Hurricanes don’t qualify for the ACC Championship Game.

Their game at Wake Forest that had been scheduled for November 28 will now be played on December 5 while their final home game of the regular season against North Carolina moves from December 5 to 12.

In order to make this work the ACC had to rearrange a few other games:

  • Wake Forest at Louisville moves from Dec. 5 to Nov. 28
  • Western Carolina at North Carolina moves from Dec. 11 to Dec. 5
  • Louisville at Boston College moves from Nov. 27 to Dec. 12

If that seems crazy then make sure you remember there is still almost a month of regular season ACC games still remaining and that this could very possibly be just the tip of the iceberg in terms of craziness.

CBS latest bowl projections frustrating for Notre Dame fans

The latest CBS bowl projections call for Notre Dame to end up in a place that would leave Fighting Irish fans rather frustrated.

As we do on a regular basis, we check and see where others view the 2020 Notre Dame season ending up this postseason.

We follow the CBS projections as well as those from USA TODAY with regularity and I’m sure will take a look at what CFN, ESPN and others project here before long.

The CBS projections are at the point they’re getting frustrating for this Notre Dame follower, however.

This week Jerry Palm of CBS again projects Notre Dame to end the season in Orlando for the Cheez-It Bowl and has their opponent an interesting one in 2-2 Oklahoma.

However, it’s what he has bumping Notre Dame down that has me a bit confused.

Let’s start with the College Football Playoff where Palm puts Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama and Oregon.

Obviously what we’ve seen early on the Clemson pick as well as an SEC representative is a logical answer.

Ohio State might bring some debate but with them having to play eight regular season games and a ninth in the conference championship.  Personally, I’m on the record of being fine with a 9-0 Ohio State squad getting in.

However, Oregon, really?

The PAC-12 is set to play just six regular season games with those in the conference championship game getting a seventh.  Are we going to act like a 7-0 Oregon team, playing in what’s perceived to be one of the two weakest Power Five conferences this season, is worthy of a CFP bid?

I often think that too much gets made of one team playing one more game than another when it comes to debating who is worthy of a playoff spot.  But we’re talking about a Pac-12 team who will have played five fewer games than the ACC Champion or runner up and four fewer than the SEC Champion and runner up.

You can’t convince me that Oregon winning every game by completely dominating even gets them in the conversation, let alone in.

The other part is interesting to me is that despite Clemson beating the doors off of Miami this past weekend, the Palm projection still calls for the Hurricanes to end up in the Orange Bowl.

That leads to Notre Dame again then heading to Orlando for the Cheez-It Bowl, a trip they’d prefer to not make seeing as two of their past three seasons have ended there as well as in 2011.

It’d be one thing if it was regular trips to the Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl but the Champs Sports turned Camping World turned Cheez-It Bowl doesn’t qualify for that.

As compelling of an opponent as Oklahoma would be, I think I speak for Notre Dame fans everywhere when I say:

(almost) ANYWHERE BUT ORLANDO AGAIN!

Miami AD: “Would be thrilled” to add Notre Dame in 2020

As the fallout continues from the Big Ten and Pac-12 officially dropping conference games from the 2020 college football season, initial steps are taking place as to the fallout.

As we’ve discussed on Fighting Irish Wire since the Big Ten news broke Thursday afternoon, the ACC appears to be Notre Dame’s life raft if 2020 only sees conference games played nationally.

The University of Miami (FL) will lose their contest against Michigan State and according to their athletic director, would be plenty excited to replace the Spartans with Notre Dame.

“If the opportunity for a match up with ND is presented, we would be thrilled to have that game added to our 2020 schedule.” Blake James – University of Miami Athletic Director to the Miami Herald

Miami was one of our guesses as a replacement if Notre Dame were to play an all-ACC schedule.

In terms of name brand you can’t ask for much more than Miami, even if they’re coming off a 6-7 campaign in 2019. They’ve added quarterback D’Eriq King from Houston who brings stability to a position that has been an issue of late for the Hurricanes.

Notre Dame and Miami have not met since November of 2017 in what ended in disaster for the Fighting Irish, a 41-8 defeat.

Notre Dame and Miami are currently set to resume the old “Catholics vs. Convicts” rivalry in 2024 and 2025 as part of the ACC/Notre Dame scheduling agreement.

Happy Friday, College Football Morning Announcements Style

2002 Miami vs. Florida State brought back all of the memories for me last night.

Congrats, you’ve made it to Friday.

I’m not sure if you’re working from home, still having to go to your place of employment or if you haven’t stopped going into work but you’re almost to the weekend and sometimes you just have to give yourself a small pat on the back for making it there.

Last night I was working on a couple things and scrolling channels, only to come across a college football game from when I was 16.  It took me a bit down memory lane with the NFL talent that was everywhere and it made me really want to go back to my parents basement and play NCAA Football ’03 with my high school friends.

That game is the basis of most of this Friday’s podcast.  Enjoy some discussion on the great Florida State vs. Miami rivalry, Sean Taylor and Greg Reid love and please tell me how a certain Hurricane was so loved nationally.

We’ll be in touch on here with a few things throughout this Friday but enjoy your weekends.

Hurricanes at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic vs. Carter Hart

Nedeljkovic and Anton Forsberg are holding down the fort while James Reimer and Petr Mrazek are injured. The Calder Cup-winning goalie Nedeljkovic is 0-1-1 with a 3.11 goals against average and .857 save percentage in his one start and two appearances so far.

Hart missed about a month due to a lower-body injury, but he is still an impressive 22-12-3 with a 2.51 GAA and .909 SV% in his 37 starts and three relief appearances. He allowed one goal on 34 shots in his only appearance against the Hurricanes in a Nov. 5 win.

Prediction

Flyers 4, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline (ML)

The FLYERS (-150) are moderate favorites over the Hurricanes (+125). The Fly Guys have been on fire lately, winning 16 of their past 21 games, while winning five straight inside the Metropolitan Division with victories in four in a row against winning teams. They’re also 20-7 in their past 27 as a favorite while going 19-7 in their past 26 at home.

The ‘Canes are skidding, winning just once in their past five contests while going 4-12 in their past 16 inside the Metropolitan Division.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The FLYERS (-1.5, +180) are worth a small-unit bet against the skidding Hurricanes, mainly because both Forsberg and Nedeljkovic have struggled between the pipes for Carolina. Philly is red-hot and the good times should continue to roll.

Over/Under (O/U)

AVOID. The lean would be to the Under 6.5 (-154), but I choose not to play that kind of juice on totals, and if you go for Under 5.5 (+135), that’s a bit low. All of the trends in this series point to the Over.
